Choose rack power distribution only after you know the GPU servers’ expected and failure-case loads, what power the facility can supply, and which connectors and outlets the equipment requires. Then verify that every component upstream—from rack PDU to source—can support the load in the operating and failure scenarios the design must withstand. No voltage, current, phase, or redundancy label is right for every GPU rack.
How do I choose rack power distribution for high-density GPU servers?
Work through the design in this order: establish the equipment load and failure behavior; confirm the facility supply; size the distribution and feeds; match electrical and physical interfaces; select monitoring and control; then validate the complete power path before energizing the rack. A PDU’s label by itself does not establish usable rack capacity.
- Define the load: collect the exact server and power-supply specifications, planned rack population, expected operating load, design maximum, and the load that must remain supported during the relevant failure.
- Confirm the source: have facilities identify the available voltage, phase arrangement, current rating, protective devices, input connector, and whether the feed comes from a floor PDU or busway tap.
- Size the paths: check the PDU rating, branch protection, applicable installation rules, phase balance, and upstream capacity for normal operation and the specified failure case.
- Match the interfaces: verify every server inlet, power cord, PDU outlet, input plug, mounting position, and cable route.
- Select operational features: decide whether input or outlet monitoring, remote management, outlet switching, or environmental sensors are needed.
- Validate end to end: review the complete design with qualified electrical and facilities personnel, then commission it against the intended failure scenarios.
What load and failure scenario should the PDU support?
Start with the exact server configuration, not a generic estimate for a “GPU rack.” Record the planned equipment count and power-supply arrangement, and distinguish a design maximum from an operating estimate. Determine what must stay online if a circuit, PDU, feed, or upstream source is unavailable. The project team should select any growth allowance; an unsupported generic percentage is not a substitute for a load plan.

Voltage, phase, power factor, protective-device limits, continuous-load requirements that apply to the installation, and the PDU’s own rating all matter. A qualified designer should apply local electrical requirements and calculate the permitted load for the actual system.

Keep manufacturer examples in their documented scope
NVIDIA’s DGX H100 SuperPOD electrical design guide gives examples for documented arrangements including 208 V three-phase delta and 400/415 V three-phase wye. It states: “The preferred power for high-density deployment patterns is 415 VAC, 32A, three-phase, N+1.” That preference applies to the guide’s stated DGX H100 deployment patterns; it is not a universal specification for GPU servers or data centers.
For those DGX H100 patterns, NVIDIA also says that more than four systems per rack are not recommended for thermodynamic reasons. Treat this as a system-specific density recommendation, not a general rack limit. Other servers, rack layouts, and cooling designs need their own specifications and facility review.
How do I match the PDU to facility power?
Ask facilities for the characteristics of the actual feed and verify them against the exact PDU model and regional connector variant. Do not select a PDU just because its voltage or current appears similar: its input connector, phase arrangement, protective-device configuration, and ratings must suit the available infrastructure.

Three-phase distribution may fit high-density loads, but the right arrangement depends on site power and the server equipment. Schneider Electric’s January 19, 2024 white paper presents rack-power selection as a five-step process and addresses high-density AI training loads; Raritan’s selection guidance also considers infrastructure voltage, circuits, phase, and amperage. Use manufacturer selection guidance as a starting point, then verify the exact product documentation and facility design.
How do I size rack PDU capacity and redundancy?
Define the failure the rack is designed to tolerate, then trace each power path from the server power supply through the rack PDU and upstream distribution to the room PDU, UPS, generator, or busway. Confirm that each path and each shared upstream component can carry the required load in the relevant operating state. Look for junctions where apparently separate feeds converge.
A/B feeds or N+1 labels do not, by themselves, prove that the sources, protective devices, or shared infrastructure can carry the load after a failure. Two rack PDUs do not automatically provide 2N redundancy: source independence, upstream capacity, server power-supply behavior, and load distribution determine the result.

Apply the documented NVIDIA pattern only to its intended design
For its DGX H100 guide’s three-path N+1 arrangement, NVIDIA requires separate power sources for the rack PDUs and says each path must support half the expected peak rack power. It also warns that a shared upstream junction must still be sized for the full downstream rack peak. These are requirements for the documented NVIDIA architecture, not a formula to apply to unrelated racks.

NVIDIA recommends checking redundancy by switching off individual feed breakers as part of commissioning. Such testing should be planned and conducted by qualified personnel using the applicable site and equipment procedures. Verify that the intended equipment stays powered and that the remaining path and upstream components are within their design limits; do not treat a successful label check as a load test.
Which outlets, connectors, and rack form factor should I specify?
Inventory every power inlet to be connected, including server power supplies and other rack equipment. Match the outlet count, connector type, outlet ratings, circuit and breaker arrangement, and phase mapping to the equipment and cords. Check that the PDU input plug or busway tap interface matches the facility feed.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Also confirm cord reach, rack width and depth, mounting space, cable routing, rear service access, and airflow. NVIDIA notes that rack depth and cable management can make horizontal PDUs necessary; its guidance describes vertical 0U units as an option only when rack dimensions and rear access permit. It also highlights outlet mapping for phase and load balancing. Raritan’s guidance identifies device count and feed arrangement as factors in PDU configuration and form factor.
Do not choose an outlet mix until the target hardware list is known. A PDU that has enough outlets in total may still be unsuitable if the connector types, outlet ratings, circuit allocation, or physical reach do not match the actual installation.
What monitoring and control features are useful?
Choose features to meet the operating plan rather than assuming every rack needs the most managed model. Basic distribution may be sufficient where local visibility and control meet operational requirements. Metered or monitored models can expose load information; managed models may add remote outlet switching and monitoring. Confirm which measurements and controls a specific model actually provides.

| Feature or device | What it can provide | Design consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Metered or monitored rack PDU | Load visibility, with capabilities depending on the model | Check whether monitoring is at the input, outlet, or both, and confirm management or API support if required. |
| Managed or switched rack PDU | Remote monitoring and, on supported models, remote outlet switching | Remote switching is an operational control, not a substitute for redundant power paths. |
| Automatic transfer switch PDU | Automatic selection between two sources for a single-corded device | Confirm the load and transfer behavior are compatible with the device and source design. |
| Environmental sensors | Rack temperature and humidity visibility when supported by the chosen system | Include them when required by the operating plan; NVIDIA calls for rack temperature and humidity monitoring in its SuperPOD guidance. |
Eaton’s buying guide distinguishes managed units with remote outlet switching and monitoring from automatic transfer switch PDUs used to support single-corded devices from redundant sources. Whether an ATS is appropriate depends on the equipment, load, transfer compatibility, and facility design.
