For sensitive data that should be available only to your app, use Android app-private internal storage, Preferences for key-value data, or Room for structured records. This is a strong default—not a rule that all data must stay on one device. If users need to share files, keep their work after uninstall, or recover it after losing a device, provide deliberate export or backup and explain the trade-off.
Choose storage by what the data is for
Start with the data’s purpose and who needs access to it. Android’s storage guidance says: “When storing sensitive data—data that shouldn’t be accessible from any other app—use internal storage, preferences, or a database.” The right choice also depends on structure, reliability, offline access, and whether users need to share or restore the data. See Android’s data and file storage overview.
- Key-value settings or small state: use the Preferences library for values such as an app preference or a setting.
- Structured records: use Room for data that benefits from tables, queries, and relationships.
- Private files: use app-specific internal storage for files the app needs but that should not be broadly available to other apps.
- User-facing files meant to be shared: use a system-mediated picker or shared storage when the user chooses to open, save, or share a file outside the app.
A single app can use more than one storage type: for example, Room for private records and a user-selected export for a report. Keep the boundary clear between an app’s working data and a file the user intends to take elsewhere.

Android app-specific internal storage is private to the app: other apps cannot access its files, and the app does not need a system storage permission to use it. Android documents these locations as encrypted on Android 10 (API level 29) and higher. However, app-specific data is removed when the app is uninstalled, and internal directories can be small. Consult Android’s app-specific files guidance when deciding what belongs there.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

“Private to the app” describes an access boundary between apps, not immunity from every threat. Platform storage guidance does not establish that local data is safe from a compromised or rooted device. Nor does encryption at rest by itself protect data while the app is unlocked and using it. Treat storage location as one part of a threat model, alongside what the app collects, when it decrypts or displays information, and how it handles access.
Use shared storage only when the user needs a file beyond the app
Scoped storage changed the old assumption that apps have broad access to external storage. Apps targeting Android 10 (API level 29) or higher receive scoped access by default. Android describes access to app-specific external directories and relevant media the app created; this does not make external storage an appropriate place for sensitive app-only records.

When users intend a file to be available to other apps, let them select or share it through the appropriate system flow. A picker gives the user control over the file involved without asking for broad access unrelated to the task. Android’s storage overview explains the current model; the older security checklist describes external-storage risks in broader terms, so apply its warning in light of scoped storage and the app’s target behavior rather than assuming all external files have identical access rules.

Local-only storage improves containment, but it makes recovery and portability the app’s responsibility. App-specific files are removed on uninstall. Data kept only on a device may also be unavailable after loss or damage. Before choosing local-only behavior, decide which information users can afford to lose and whether they need a way to export, restore, or move it.

Keep especially sensitive data out of backup
Android recommends excluding particularly sensitive data from backup when appropriate. If data needs backup despite its sensitivity, Android’s guidance says to require end-to-end encryption under the documented conditions. The Standard Android Backup system encrypts backup data in transit and at rest, but those protections are not the same as end-to-end encryption. Review Android’s backup security recommendations and make the backup decision for each data category.
Configure rules for the Android versions you support
Backup configuration differs by platform version. Android 12 (API level 31) and later use the android:dataExtractionRules attribute; Android 11 and lower use android:fullBackupContent. Set and verify the applicable rules for the versions your app supports rather than assuming one configuration covers every device.

Make privacy part of the whole app
Private storage cannot compensate for collecting more data than the feature needs or exposing it elsewhere in the app. Android’s privacy checklist recommends limiting permissions, explaining requests, handling denial gracefully, auditing data access on Android 11 (API level 30) and higher, disclosing data use, and keeping sensitive information out of logs.

- Request a permission only when a feature needs it, and explain the request in context.
- Keep the feature usable where possible if a user denies permission.
- Review what data the app accesses and disclose how that data is used.
- Do not place sensitive values in logs, where they can leak through debugging or diagnostics.
- Check access auditing behavior on Android 11 (API level 30) and higher.
A practical decision checklist
- Classify the data. Identify whether it is a private app record, a setting, a user-created file, or a file the user explicitly intends to share.
- Choose the matching private store. Use Preferences for key-value data, Room for structured records, and internal app-specific storage for private files.
- Set the lifetime. Decide whether data may disappear on uninstall or must be exportable or recoverable after device loss.
- Choose the sharing path. For user-selected files intended for use elsewhere, use a picker or shared storage rather than broad access by default.
- Set backup policy per data category. Exclude sensitive data when appropriate, or apply the documented end-to-end encryption requirements if it must be backed up; configure rules for supported Android versions.
- Review the full privacy flow. Minimize permissions, explain requests, handle denial, audit access where supported, disclose data use, and keep sensitive information out of logs.
