Choose a phase-change material (PCM) by matching its transition-temperature range to the temperatures at its installed location, then verify the complete product-and-assembly design for heat transfer, moisture, fire safety, leakage control, durability and installed cost. A PCM only stores useful heat when it repeatedly melts and solidifies; it is not a replacement for insulation, air sealing, ventilation or a properly designed envelope.

The right choice depends on the building’s climate, occupancy schedule, heating and cooling controls, wall or ceiling construction and retrofit objective. The material with the highest advertised latent-heat value can perform poorly if the assembly rarely crosses its transition range.

What a PCM does in a retrofit

A phase-change material absorbs heat while changing phase, usually from solid to liquid, and releases that heat as it returns to solid. During the transition, a relatively small temperature change can store or release a substantial amount of energy. In a building retrofit, that storage can moderate indoor-surface temperatures, shift part of a cooling or heating load, or reduce short-duration peaks.

PCM performance is conditional. Building America guidance from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory explains that temperature regulation occurs when the space temperature moves above and below the material’s melting range. If temperatures remain below the range, the PCM stays solid and cannot absorb additional latent heat. If they remain above it, the PCM stays liquid and cannot discharge its stored heat. An extended hot or cold event can therefore leave the material fully melted or fully solidified until conditions return to the transition range.

That operating principle makes PCM selection a temperature-and-schedule problem rather than a simple materials ranking. Start with measured or defensible temperature profiles, not a catalog’s nominal melting point.

1. Map the temperatures the installed PCM will actually experience

Measure the right location

Record temperatures where the PCM will be installed: inside a wall lining, within a cavity, behind a ceiling finish, at an interior surface, or in a building-services component. Outdoor air temperature and a thermostat reading are not substitutes for the temperature at the material itself. A PCM behind an interior finish can see a different cycle from the room air because of solar gains, insulation, thermal bridges, furnishings and ventilation.

  • Log room air and relevant surface or cavity temperatures through representative hot, mild and cold periods.
  • Note heating and cooling setpoints, setback periods, window opening, nighttime ventilation and occupancy gains.
  • Include the effect of the proposed insulation, air sealing and finish, because those layers change the PCM’s charging and discharging rate.
  • Check whether the daily and seasonal profile crosses the proposed transition range often enough to provide useful cycles.

Do not choose a universal “best” melting temperature

There is no single transition temperature that suits every climate or room. A material selected for a daytime-cooled office may be inappropriate for a naturally ventilated home, a winter-heated room or a ceiling that receives direct solar gains. The useful range is the one that overlaps the assembly’s normal operating cycle while allowing the PCM to release stored heat before the next charging period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for extreme and shoulder conditions

Model or review periods when the building stays above or below the transition range for many hours or days. During those periods, latent storage is temporarily unavailable, so the rest of the envelope must carry the load. A design that works on typical days can still provide little buffering during a prolonged heat wave or cold snap.

2. Define the retrofit objective and location

Specify what the PCM is expected to do before comparing products. “Improve efficiency” is too broad to test. A project may instead target one or more of the following:

  • Moderating indoor temperature swings or interior-surface temperatures.
  • Reducing cooling or heating energy during a defined operating schedule.
  • Reducing peak electrical demand or shifting a load away from a high-cost period.
  • Adding passive thermal storage where mechanical controls are limited.
  • Providing thermal storage in a building-services system rather than in the envelope.

Location determines the relevant evidence. A PCM embedded in an exterior wall, placed behind an interior lining, installed in a ceiling, or integrated with a ventilation or surface-heating system has different heat-transfer paths, moisture exposures, access requirements and controls. VDI 2164:2016-12, listed as current by DIN Media, covers planning and calculation for latent-heat storage in building services, including passive and active surfaces and ventilation systems. Its scope is broader than a passive wall retrofit; do not transfer results between these applications without checking the system boundary.

3. Select the material form and containment method

Packaging often matters as much as the PCM chemistry. The retrofit must keep the material where it belongs through repeated phase changes and must remain compatible with the substrate, finishes and fasteners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Form or approach What to verify Main decision concern
Direct incorporation How the PCM is mixed into the host material, its concentration, migration behavior and response to repeated melting Leakage and fire implications if liquid PCM can escape into adjacent layers
Immersion in a porous material Pore structure, retention after cycling, compatibility with binders and resistance to leakage Whether the porous host remains stable and keeps the intended capacity in service
Encapsulated PCM Envelope material, seam and puncture resistance, pressure or volume change and installation damage tolerance Maintaining containment during transport, cutting and long-term cycling
Shape-stabilized PCM Support matrix, thermal conductivity, phase-change repeatability and dimensional stability Balancing leakage control with adequate heat transfer to the surrounding assembly

Ask for documentation on the exact composite and installed assembly, not only the raw PCM. A bulk material’s latent heat or conductivity does not establish the capacity, response time or safety of a finished panel, board, plaster, membrane or service module.

4. Read thermal-property data in context

Request a product data set that identifies the test method and the conditions behind every number. At minimum, obtain:

  • Transition temperature and the width of the transition range, separately for melting and solidification when reported.
  • Latent-storage capacity and the temperature interval over which it was measured.
  • Thermal conductivity in the relevant phase and, where available, in the complete composite.
  • Sample thickness, PCM fraction, test direction and boundary conditions.
  • Number of thermal cycles and any change in capacity or transition temperature during testing.

Compare data measured on equivalent products. A laboratory value for a thin sample under controlled conditions cannot be converted directly into whole-wall energy savings. Contact resistance, framing, fasteners, surface finishes and imperfect contact can all limit the rate at which heat reaches the PCM.

5. Check moisture and material compatibility before specifying

Retrofitting an existing wall changes temperature and vapor gradients. A new interior layer can make part of the original wall colder, alter drying potential or move a condensation plane. Review the existing construction, rain exposure, air leakage paths, plumbing penetrations and interior humidity together with the proposed PCM, insulation, vapor-control layers and finishes.

Use hygrothermal modeling for the question you actually have

ASTM E3054/E3054M-23 is an active standard guide for characterizing and using hygrothermal models in building-envelope moisture-control design. It addresses models that may include heat storage in dry or wet materials, moisture-dependent conduction, phase-change phenomena, vapor and liquid transport and other mechanisms, but it does not cover every physical process or building problem. ASTM states: “Each hygrothermal model has specific capabilities and limitations.” Select a model whose represented transport processes, inputs and boundary conditions match the decision being made, and document those limitations.

The same ASTM guidance states: “This document cannot replace education or experience and should be used in conjunction with professional judgment.” A model output is evidence for a design decision, not a universal product approval. Have a qualified building-enclosure professional review unusual walls, moisture-sensitive materials and high indoor-humidity uses.

Apply retrofit guidance within its geography and scope

The UK government’s Retrofit internal wall insulation: best practice, published September 13, 2021, addresses retrofit viability, design and material selection, including hygrothermal considerations. It is specifically UK guidance for internal-wall-insulation work; use it as a reference for process and risk identification, then check the requirements and climate assumptions applicable to the project’s jurisdiction.

6. Require fire, leakage and safety evidence for the installed assembly

Obtain fire-test and approval documentation for the actual PCM product, containment and adjacent layers. A classification for a raw ingredient or a different panel construction does not automatically apply to the proposed wall or ceiling. Ask how penetrations, field cuts, joints, service openings and replacement work are handled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PNNL Building America guidance warns that leakage during melting can increase fire risk for some direct-incorporation approaches. That warning does not establish that every PCM is hazardous; it means the containment strategy and assembly evidence must be specific. Confirm:

  • Whether the PCM can migrate when liquid and where it would go if containment failed.
  • How the product limits leakage at seams, edges, penetrations and damaged areas.
  • Whether the finished assembly has the required fire-resistance, flame-spread or smoke documentation for its use.
  • What personal-protection, handling and disposal procedures apply during installation or removal.

7. Check cycling durability and maintenance

Ask for cycling, aging and leakage results at temperatures and humidity levels resembling the proposed service. The public guidance does not establish one universal service-life threshold for every PCM. Instead, require evidence appropriate to the intended number of cycles, access conditions and consequences of failure.

Clarify whether capacity, transition range, conductivity, dimensions or containment change after cycling. Identify inspection points, signs of leakage, access panels, replacement procedures and any maintenance interval. A product that cannot be inspected or replaced may need a higher evidence standard than a removable module in a plant room.

8. Compare PCM with other retrofit strategies on the same basis

Compare the complete projects, not isolated material properties. For each option, evaluate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Fit between the transition range and measured operating temperatures.
  2. Heat-transfer path and expected charging and discharging rate.
  3. Compatibility with the existing wall, ceiling, moisture-control layers and finishes.
  4. Fire, leakage, durability and maintenance documentation for the installed assembly.
  5. Installation access, occupant disruption, added thickness and detailing at openings.
  6. Installed cost, product availability, modeled or measured energy effects and payback.

Conventional insulation, additional thermal mass, air sealing, ventilation changes and PCM can interact. A PCM should not be credited for savings that actually come from insulation or sealing. Conversely, adding PCM without correcting major air leakage or inadequate insulation may leave the primary heat-flow problem unresolved.

9. Understand what the California evidence does—and does not—show

The California Energy Commission’s 2024 project Phase Change Material-Enhanced Insulation for Residential Exterior Wall Retrofits (publication CEC-500-2024-086) combined PCM integration with insulation and aerosol envelope sealing. The work used laboratory-validated modeling across different wall-insulation levels, envelope sealing, thermal mass, window opening and nighttime-ventilation conditions, then demonstrated the retrofit package in three homes in Vallejo, Sacramento and Los Angeles.

Reported result Qualification
Cooling-energy reduction: 10% to 41% California Energy Commission, 2024; result for the combined retrofit package and tested conditions
Heating-energy change: −23% to +24% California Energy Commission, 2024; the report presents a negative change as a reduction, and the range also includes an increase
Peak-demand reduction: 3% to 81% California Energy Commission, 2024; package and operating conditions vary
Envelope airtightness improvement: up to 58% California Energy Commission, 2024; attributable to the combined retrofit that included aerosol sealing, not PCM alone
Additional insulation above a four-inch wall cavity: approximately 200 to 300 kWh annual savings California Energy Commission, 2024; evaluated context, not a universal PCM increment
Payback: 4.5 to 41 years California Energy Commission, 2024; entire retrofit package, varying by climate zone

The agency attributed the wide spread in outcomes partly to user behavior and identified retrofit cost and limited market availability as adoption challenges. Its report estimated that the studied PCM’s thermal-storage benefit was equal to or better than increasing standard wall insulation by 20% in the evaluated context. That comparison does not mean PCM should replace insulation in every building, nor does it provide a product guarantee.

10. Follow a documented selection workflow

  1. Define the target. State whether the project seeks temperature moderation, energy reduction, peak-load reduction, passive storage or a building-services application.
  2. Characterize operation. Gather room, surface and cavity temperatures, schedules, setpoints, ventilation, solar exposure and representative weather.
  3. Set a transition-range requirement. Identify the range that will be crossed during normal operation and estimate how often charging and discharging can occur.
  4. Screen product forms. Eliminate forms that cannot be contained, accessed or installed without unacceptable disruption or thickness.
  5. Request assembly data. Obtain composite conductivity, latent capacity, transition range, test methods, cycling results and installation details for the proposed product.
  6. Run the moisture review. Analyze the existing and proposed layers together; use a hygrothermal model only when its capabilities match the moisture-control question.
  7. Verify safety approvals. Check fire, smoke, leakage and handling evidence for the actual product and assembly, including field joints and penetrations.
  8. Model the whole retrofit. Separate the expected effects of insulation, air sealing, ventilation, thermal mass and PCM. Test typical and extended extreme conditions.
  9. Price the installed work. Include preparation, access, containment, finishing, testing, commissioning, maintenance and possible replacement, not only the PCM material.
  10. Record acceptance criteria. Define the temperature range, moisture limits, documentation, inspection points and performance measures that must be met before approval.

11. Questions to send a supplier or designer

  • What transition temperature and range were measured, by which method, and on which exact product form?
  • What latent capacity and conductivity remain after cycling in the proposed composite?
  • How many cycles were completed, at what temperatures and humidity, and what changed?
  • What prevents leakage during melting, including at cuts, seams, penetrations and damaged areas?
  • Which fire, smoke and safety tests apply to the complete installed assembly?
  • Is the product compatible with the existing substrate, adhesives, fasteners, coatings and vapor-control layers?
  • What hygrothermal assumptions support the installation details, and who reviewed them?
  • What thickness, weight, access and sequencing does installation require?
  • What current availability, lead time, warranty, inspection and replacement provisions apply?
  • Which installed-cost assumptions and climate conditions support the claimed payback?

Require dated, product-specific documents. If a vendor supplies only bulk-material properties or a generic energy claim, treat the information as insufficient for an assembly decision.

12. Avoid common selection failures

Choosing by latent heat alone

Why it fails: A high-capacity material that rarely crosses its transition range contributes little. Fix: compare the transition range with measured temperatures and schedules, then evaluate heat-transfer resistance in the finished assembly.

Assuming PCM replaces insulation

Why it fails: PCM stores heat but does not remove the need to control steady heat flow, air leakage, moisture and ventilation. Fix: design the envelope as a package and attribute modeled savings to each measure.

Using raw-material data as whole-wall performance

Why it fails: Interfaces, framing, finishes and containment can limit heat flow. Fix: request composite and assembly-level evidence under relevant boundary conditions.

Ignoring moisture after an interior retrofit

Why it fails: New layers can change drying paths and condensation risk. Fix: assess the existing wall and proposed layers together with an appropriate hygrothermal method and professional review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accepting generic fire paperwork

Why it fails: A test on a different product, thickness or containment system may not apply. Fix: obtain documentation for the exact installed assembly, including penetrations and field modifications.

Assuming a modeled saving is a guaranteed bill reduction

Why it fails: Results vary with climate, controls, occupant behavior and the other retrofit measures. Fix: report the conditions and package boundaries, and use project-specific modeling or measurement.

13. Make the final decision with a transparent scorecard

Before procurement, score each candidate against the same written requirements. Give the greatest weight to transition-range fit, moisture safety and assembly-specific fire and leakage evidence; a lower material price cannot compensate for a product that will not cycle or cannot be safely contained. Record unresolved items as conditions of approval rather than filling gaps with assumptions.

Check local building, fire and energy codes and the current status of any standard used in the design. VDI 2164:2016-12 is listed as current by DIN Media, while ASTM E3054/E3054M-23 is a guide rather than a product approval. Jurisdictional requirements, available products and acceptable test reports can change, so the project team should confirm them at specification time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical rule is simple: select a PCM only when its transition range, packaging and documented assembly behavior fit the real temperature cycle and envelope. Then verify moisture, fire, durability, availability and installed economics before treating it as part of a retrofit design.
