The right media depends on what you want to produce: a plastic card printed directly in an inkjet printer, a photo ID printed on a sheet, or a paper copy of an existing card. There is no universally best paper for all three. Check your printer’s manual for supported media before buying, and test a small quantity first.
Choose the output before choosing the media
“ID card paper” can mean different things. A sheet of photo paper, a PVC card with an inkjet-receptive coating, and plain paper used to copy an existing ID are not interchangeable. Decide which result you need, then match the media to the printer and its documented capabilities.
- Plastic card printed directly: requires an inkjet-coated PVC card and a printer that explicitly supports that stock.
- Photo ID printed on a sheet: requires paper of a supported type, size, and thickness.
- Copy of an existing card on a page: may be possible with an all-in-one printer’s ID-copy function and plain paper.
For a plastic card, use only supported inkjet-coated PVC
Ordinary PVC is not automatically suitable for an inkjet printer. The card needs a coating made for inkjet printing, and the printer must support its dimensions, thickness, and feed method. Epson’s instructions for the L8050 and L18050 specify white PVC cards measuring 54 × 86 mm and 0.76 mm thick. Those measurements are guidance for those models, not a general specification for other printers. See Epson’s card-printing precautions.
Before ordering, check the manual for your exact printer model and confirm the card stock’s coating, dimensions, thickness, and supported feed path. Do not assume that a card will work merely because it fits the printer opening.

For a photo ID on paper, follow the printer’s media limits
Choose photo or inkjet paper that the printer supports at the size you intend to print. Media recommendations vary by model, including allowable paper size and thickness; consult the device-specific guidance rather than treating one manufacturer’s limits as universal. Brother’s recommended-paper guidance illustrates why model compatibility matters.
In the print settings, select the media type that matches the paper. Brother advises removing photo sheets promptly and avoiding contact with the printed surface until it has dried, since handling too soon can cause smudging. Test a few sheets first: feeding and image results can differ with the printer and stock. Brother’s paper and handling advice.

For a paper copy of an existing card, check for ID Card Copy
If you only need both sides of an existing ID reproduced on a page, you may not need special photo media. Some all-in-one printers have an ID Card Copy function that places the copied sides on plain Letter or A4 paper. Epson documents this workflow for specified older all-in-one models; it is not a feature to assume every printer has. Check Epson’s ID Card Copy instructions and your own model’s manual.

Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Identify whether you need a plastic card, a photo printed on a sheet, or a paper copy of an existing card.
- Find the manual for your exact printer model and confirm supported media type, size, thickness, and feed path.
- For direct-to-card printing, verify that the PVC is inkjet-coated and that the printer explicitly supports it.
- For paper photos, use the printer’s matching media setting and allow the print to dry before handling.
- Buy a small quantity first and check feeding, smudging, and image results before purchasing in bulk.
Manufacturer guidance establishes compatibility requirements for particular devices, but it does not establish a universally best paper brand or comparative durability results. Choose stock by documented fit for your printer and intended output.
