Choose over-ear headphones by checking phone compatibility first, then matching comfort, noise control, battery life and device-switching features to how you actually listen. Don’t assume a USB-C port supports audio, or that a Bluetooth codec will improve sound unless both your phone and headphones support it.
Start with the phone connection
Before comparing headphones, identify your phone model and the connections it supports. Bluetooth is often the simplest option, but wired listening can depend on the phone’s ports and audio support.
If you want to listen over a wire
- Check whether your phone has a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
- If you plan to use USB-C, confirm that your specific phone supports USB-C audio output. A USB-C port alone does not guarantee it. Bose notes that some USB-C ports lack audio support, and digital USB-C headphones may not work through an analog 3.5 mm adapter: Bose USB-C audio compatibility guidance.
- Verify the exact adapter and headphone connection requirements for your phone rather than assuming a generic adapter will work.
- If wired playback when the headphones are powered off matters to you, check that the specific model supports it. An included cable does not establish that capability.
If you want Bluetooth
Check the headphones’ supported features against your phone, not just the product label. For example, Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3 and the SBC, AAC and LDAC Classic Audio codecs for the over-ear WH-1000XM6: Sony WH-1000XM6 specifications. That is a model-specific specification, not a guarantee that every phone supports every listed codec.
Match noise control to where you listen
Noise cancellation and ambient listening solve different problems. Noise cancellation can be useful on commutes or flights, while an ambient mode can help you hear more of your surroundings when you need awareness. Consider the places you actually use headphones: frequent travel, a shared workspace, home listening or everyday wear in settings where you need to stay alert.

Features vary by model. Bose describes Quiet and Aware listening options for its QuietComfort Headphones, along with an audio cable: Bose QuietComfort Headphones product details. Treat those as product-specific features, not a description of every over-ear headphone.
Prioritize fit for long listening sessions
Comfort is personal, and the available product specifications do not establish which model will fit you best. Clamp pressure, ear-pad shape, heat and weight can all affect a long session. Use fit information to narrow your options, and where possible check a retailer’s return policy so you can assess comfort yourself.

Read battery figures as model-specific claims
Compare battery estimates using the listening settings you expect to use. Noise cancellation can affect a model’s stated runtime, and manufacturer figures are not independent test results. Bose advertises up to 24 hours of audio playback with noise cancellation on for its QuietComfort Headphones; that figure applies to that product, not to over-ear headphones as a category. See Bose’s product details for its claim.
Consider codecs and multipoint only when they fit your use
Bluetooth codecs
A codec is relevant only when both the phone and the headphones support it. Sony’s guide lists SBC, AAC and LDAC for WH-1000XM6 Classic Audio playback, and Sony directs users to their smartphone instructions to check compatibility: Sony’s Bluetooth codec guidance. Codec availability does not establish that you will hear a difference; do not treat a codec label as a dependable shortcut to sound quality.

Multipoint
Multipoint can be useful if you regularly move between a phone and a computer. Check the specific headphone’s documentation for support and behavior before buying; a buying guide identifies it as a feature worth comparing, but the feature is not universal: What Hi-Fi?’s headphone buying guide.

Use this quick decision sequence
- Identify your phone and ports. Confirm Bluetooth support or, for wired use, verify its 3.5 mm or USB-C audio compatibility.
- Choose wireless, wired or both. If you need a wired fallback, verify how it works with your phone and whether the headphones support the powered-off behavior you want.
- Rank your listening situations. Decide whether travel noise control, ambient awareness, calls, home listening or long sessions matter most.
- Compare comfort details. Look at fit information and consider a return policy; specifications alone cannot settle personal comfort.
- Check battery under the settings you plan to use. Keep the model and noise-cancellation condition attached to any runtime figure.
- Check codecs and multipoint last. Confirm both-device compatibility and buy those features only if you expect to use them.
