Choose open-ear earbuds by fit and stability first, then check whether their call performance, moisture protection, battery life, controls, and sound suit the places you will use them. Open-ear designs leave your ears less isolated from surrounding sound than sealed in-ear earbuds, which can be useful outdoors or at work—but they are not one uniform design, and no hook or clip is guaranteed to fit every ear.
What “open-ear” means—and what it does not
Open-ear describes how earbuds sit in or around your ears, rather than a single construction. Many models use an ear hook that curves around the outer ear; others use a clip-on form that rests around the ear. Both are intended to deliver audio without sealing a tip into the ear canal. Their shape, pressure points, and stability can differ substantially, so the category name alone does not tell you whether a particular pair will be comfortable.
Open-ear earbuds are also different from bone-conduction headphones. TechRadar distinguishes the two: open-ear earbuds deliver sound from a speaker positioned near the ear, while bone-conduction headphones transmit sound differently. If you are comparing products, check how the maker describes the construction rather than assuming every device that leaves the ear canal open works the same way.

The main design trade-off is awareness versus isolation. With less physical sealing, ambient sounds can remain more audible, which may suit walking outdoors or keeping an ear on activity around you at work. The same openness generally means less isolation and immersion than sealed in-ear earbuds. If you want to shut out surrounding noise or prioritize a more immersive listening experience, that trade-off may matter more than the category’s comfort or awareness benefits.

Start with fit: hook or clip, then test stability
Compare the construction against your ears
Look at how each design contacts the ear and where it might press. An ear hook wraps around the ear; a clip-on design holds its position by resting around it. Neither shape is universally more comfortable. Ear shape varies, and a design that feels secure to one person may create pressure or shift on someone else. If you wear glasses, consider where the frame and earbud might meet; do not assume an adjustment that works for one model will work for another.
Fit affects more than comfort. An open-ear earbud needs to stay in position without relying on an in-ear seal. A loose or shifting fit can become distracting during movement and may change how the audio reaches your ear. SoundGuys and TechRadar both make fit and stability part of their selection or testing criteria, which is a useful reminder to judge fit in context rather than by appearance alone.
Test the movement you actually plan to do
Try the earbuds while walking, running, and doing the kinds of gym movements you expect to make. A fit that stays put while sitting at a desk has not necessarily proved itself during exercise. Pay attention to slipping, pressure, and whether you need to reposition the earbud repeatedly. If you can try a pair before relying on it for a workout, use that opportunity to test the intended movements; if you cannot, treat fit claims as model-specific rather than a promise about your own ears.

Glasses, hairstyle, and the shape of your ear can affect how an individual design sits. Nothing’s guidance for Ear (open), for example, says glasses can be worn with adjustment and notes that fit may need adjustment because ear shapes vary. That is advice for that model, not a general guarantee that every open-ear earbud will work with every frame.

Match the design to the setting
| Use case | What to prioritize | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Calls and desk work | Comfort over a listening session, clear call samples in the environments you use, and controls that are easy to operate. | Ambient sound may remain audible; the open design does not provide the isolation of a sealed in-ear fit. |
| Outdoor walking | A stable fit and a sound presentation that leaves surrounding sounds accessible. | Wind and other environmental conditions can affect calls; open-ear does not mean every sound will be easy to hear or every call will remain clear. |
| Running and gym sessions | Retention during your own movements, model-specific moisture guidance, and practical controls. | Exercise suitability is not established by a fitness marketing claim alone; check the exact rating and care instructions. |
| Everyday listening | A comfortable shape, battery basis that fits your routine, and controls you can use reliably. | Less isolation and immersion than sealed in-ear earbuds may be a poor fit if blocking surrounding sound is your priority. |
Use this as a shortlist, not as a substitute for model checks. A feature that sounds useful in one setting can be irrelevant in another: for example, awareness may be a priority outside, while the ability to hear a call clearly in wind may be more important to someone who takes calls while moving.
Evaluate call performance in realistic conditions
For calls, look for independent microphone samples or tests from quiet rooms, traffic, and wind—especially if you expect to talk while walking or running. A microphone count or an “AI” label does not establish how intelligible your voice will be in the situations you care about. Wind and movement can affect call clarity even when a product is marketed for calls.
TechRadar’s report on the Shokz OpenFit 2+ says call clarity can suffer on windy days or while running. Treat that as a finding about that model in that guide, not as proof that all open-ear earbuds perform the same way or that every wearer will have the same experience. More generally, give greater weight to listening tests conducted under conditions close to yours than to a headline feature label.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you take calls at a desk, a quiet-room sample is relevant but does not answer how the earbuds handle traffic or wind. If you take calls outdoors, seek evidence from those noisier conditions. If a review does not describe its test environment, it may be difficult to tell whether its call assessment applies to your routine.

Check workout durability and care instructions
For exercise, confirm the exact water or sweat resistance rating for the model and read its care instructions. Ratings differ among products, and a general statement that earbuds are suitable for fitness is not a waterproof guarantee. Do not infer a rating from another product in the same range or from the open-ear category as a whole.
Manufacturer care guidance can matter even when a product has a stated resistance rating. Nothing advises Ear (open) owners to wipe sweat promptly; its cited support guidance does not provide a numeric IP rating. That distinction is important: care advice and a numeric rating are different kinds of information, and one should not be used to fill in the other.
Before buying for workouts, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the precise model and the way you intend to use it. If the rating or care guidance is not stated in the material you are reviewing, do not treat that silence as evidence that the earbuds are safe for a particular exposure.

Compare battery life on the same basis
Battery claims are easy to misread unless you separate runtime from the earbuds themselves and total runtime that includes the charging case. A number that includes case recharges is not a direct comparison with a number measured for a single earbud charge. Check whether the source identifies the measurement basis and remember that actual runtime can vary with use and enabled features.

For example, TechRadar lists the Shokz OpenFit 2+ at 11 hours from the earbuds and 48 hours with the case. Those are that guide’s reported figures, not a guarantee for every user or a category-wide test. Nothing’s US product page advertises 30 hours for Ear (open); that is a manufacturer claim, and it should not be treated as an independent comparison result. Compare each figure with its source and measurement basis before deciding which is longer in the way that matters to you.
Think about how you use earbuds during a typical day. If you need long stretches between case access, earbud-only runtime may be the more useful figure. If you are comfortable returning the earbuds to their case between listening sessions, the case-inclusive total may better describe your routine. Do not rank products using those two different kinds of figures as if they measured the same thing.
Consider controls and connectivity as everyday features
Controls matter most when you need to operate the earbuds without interrupting what you are doing. Compare whether a model uses buttons or touch controls and consider which you find easier to use reliably. The selection criteria described by TechRadar and SoundGuys include controls, battery, and connectivity; the practical question is whether the available controls and device behavior fit your day, not whether a feature list is longer.
If you plan to switch between devices, check whether the product supports the connectivity behavior you need, such as multipoint, rather than assuming it does. Verify the exact model’s documentation or a review that clearly tests the feature. Device switching is a selection consideration, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal connectivity feature set for the examples below.

When comparing products, keep a simple checklist: physical control type, the actions those controls support, and whether the device-switching behavior you want is documented. If a listing does not say, mark it as not stated rather than guessing from another model or a brand’s broader product range.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set sound expectations before choosing
Open-ear designs are best understood as a different listening compromise, not as sealed earbuds with the seal removed and every other quality preserved. They let more ambient sound through and generally offer less isolation and immersion than sealed in-ear designs. That may be exactly what you want while working or moving around; it may be a disadvantage when you want to focus on music without environmental sound.
Comfort and sound are individual and model-dependent. A review’s favorable assessment of one pair does not establish that another open-ear design will sound the same, nor that it will suit your ears. Consider whether access to surrounding sound is important enough to accept reduced isolation, then read model-specific listening assessments rather than relying on the category name.

These examples illustrate different designs and the kinds of details worth checking; they are not universal winners or a controlled head-to-head test. Specifications and findings below are attributed to the cited guide or manufacturer guidance, and availability or specifications may vary by market.
| Example | Design and reported details | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|
| Shokz OpenFit 2+ | TechRadar identifies an ear-hook design and lists 11 hours of earbud runtime, 48 hours with the case, an IP55 rating, and 9.4 g per bud. | The guide praises fit and sound, but reports that calls can be less clear in wind or while running. The figures and call findings are model-specific, not guarantees for every wearer. |
| HUAWEI FreeClip 2 | SoundGuys identifies a clip-on design and reports IP57 water resistance. | The reviewer describes it as comfortable during extended listening, but individual fit can still differ. |
| Nothing Ear (open) | Nothing describes it as open sound technology designed for movement and advertises 30 hours of battery on its US product page. | Nothing’s support guidance says fit may need adjustment because ear shapes vary, glasses can be worn with adjustment, and sweat should be wiped promptly. The battery figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independent comparison result. |
The table does not establish that one design will fit you better, last longer in your routine, or provide clearer calls across all conditions. The available figures come from different source types: a review guide’s reported specifications and testing, an editorial test report, and manufacturer product or support pages. Keep those distinctions visible when comparing claims.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before you buy
- Choose your main setting. Decide whether calls, workouts, outdoor awareness, or everyday listening is the main reason you want open-ear earbuds. A pair that is convenient at a desk may not be stable enough for your exercise.
- Narrow by construction. Compare ear-hook and clip-on shapes, then consider pressure points, glasses, and how the design contacts your ears. Do not assume the category name predicts comfort.
- Look for fit evidence. Favor model-specific fit reports and, where possible, test the fit during the movements you intend to make. Separate a reviewer’s experience from a promise that it will fit you.
- Check calls under relevant conditions. Look for microphone listening tests in quiet, traffic, or wind according to where you take calls. Treat microphone counts and AI labels as features, not proof of intelligibility.
- Verify workout details. Confirm the exact water or sweat rating and care directions for the precise model. Do not convert a general fitness claim into a waterproof guarantee.
- Normalize battery claims. Record earbud-only runtime separately from case-inclusive runtime and note whether the number is a manufacturer claim or a review report.
- Check controls and switching. Confirm whether the controls are buttons or touch and whether any device-switching feature you need is actually documented for that model.
- Decide whether openness suits your listening. If ambient sound access matters, open-ear may fit your use. If isolation or immersion matters more, a sealed design may better match the goal.
- Check current local details. Confirm regional availability and specifications before purchase. Models, ratings, and claims may differ by market, while prices and stock can change.
Common comparison mistakes to avoid
- Assuming all open-ear designs are alike: ear hooks and clips have different shapes, and the fit is personal.
- Equating open-ear with bone conduction: they describe different ways of delivering sound.
- Assuming awareness means effortless outdoor calls: wind and movement can affect intelligibility.
- Treating exercise marketing as a water rating: verify the specific model’s rating and care instructions.
- Comparing unlike battery figures: case-inclusive total and earbud-only runtime are different measures.
- Turning one review into a universal verdict: comfort, stability, sound, and call results are model- and user-dependent.
