Start without music for the sections that carry the explanation, then add a restrained instrumental only when it serves a clear purpose. Evidence from narrated space-science videos shows that music can raise engagement without reliably improving learning. The safest choice is therefore task-dependent: protect vocabulary, evidence, calculations, causal reasoning, demonstrations, and other information-heavy moments first; use music selectively for tone, transitions, or lower-demand sequences; and compare edits for clarity and recall rather than enjoyment alone.
What the evidence says about music and learning
The most directly relevant experiment is Phan and Cheon’s 2013 study of narrated space-science instructional videos. It used two experiments with 68 participants in the first and 74 in the second, all recruited from a southwestern United States university. Those samples describe that study, not the wider population of science learners.
The researchers compared narration with original music and sound effects, Baroque music, or no background music or sound. In the first experiment, the original Discovery Channel-style music-and-effects version produced significantly higher engagement than narration alone. However, retention and transfer differences were not statistically significant. In the second experiment, engagement differed between conditions, while the narration-only group achieved higher transfer performance than the Baroque-music group; retention differences were not significant.
That pattern matters because engagement and learning are different outcomes. A soundtrack can make a video feel more polished, energetic, or memorable while failing to help viewers retain a definition or apply a scientific principle. The study also had acknowledged limitations, including different narrators and online, self-paced participation. It does not prove that all music harms every learner. It does show why adding music by default is difficult to justify when the goal is accurate understanding.

A 2017 review in CBE—Life Sciences Education places the result in a broader instructional-design principle: remove details that are unnecessary for the learning goal, while considering what the audience already knows. Music can become an extraneous source of processing when it competes with material learners need to hear and interpret.
No cited source establishes a universal best tempo, genre, loudness, or music-to-voice ratio for every science video. Treat any such number as a production choice to test, not as an evidence-based rule.
Decide whether your video needs music at all
Leave it out when the explanation is the main event
Use no music, or an almost imperceptible bed, when viewers must follow unfamiliar terminology, a sequence of causes and effects, numerical evidence, equations, a graph, a safety instruction, or a demonstration whose sound carries meaning. Silence is not a production failure in these passages. It gives the narration and relevant sounds the entire auditory channel.
- New vocabulary: names of structures, processes, species, instruments, or particles.
- Dense reasoning: an explanation in which one sentence depends on the previous sentence.
- Numbers and comparisons: measurements, percentages, dates, rates, or statistical results.
- Cause and effect: mechanisms, experimental controls, or multi-step derivations.
- Meaningful natural sound: a field recording, machine tone, animal call, or laboratory demonstration that is itself evidence.
Use music when it has a defined job
Music is easier to defend when you can describe its function in one sentence. Appropriate functions include establishing a calm or investigative tone before the explanation, smoothing a transition between chapters, supporting a visual montage, or sustaining a low-information sequence such as an opening panorama or end card.
If you cannot identify what the track contributes beyond “making the video less empty,” omit it and reassess the edit. The space-science study found that higher engagement did not consistently become better retention or transfer.
Separate tone from information
A soundtrack may communicate scale, urgency, curiosity, or warmth. Those emotional signals can be useful for a transition or a human-interest context, but they should not dictate the treatment of a sentence that carries the scientific claim. Build the explanatory section first, then decide whether music survives a clarity check.

Map the video’s cognitive demand before choosing a track
Create a simple timeline and mark every point where the audience’s listening demand rises. This prevents one continuous track from running unchanged beneath the most difficult material.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Mark unfamiliar terms. Highlight the first explanation of each technical word and any sentence that defines a symbol or unit.
- Mark evidence. Flag charts, numerical findings, quotations, experimental observations, and on-screen labels that viewers must connect to the narration.
- Mark reasoning chains. Identify passages that explain how or why something happens, especially when several conditions lead to one conclusion.
- Mark sound-dependent shots. Note demonstrations, instrument readings, interviews, and environmental recordings where the audio is informational.
- Mark low-demand sections. List title cards, location establishing shots, visual montages, pauses between chapters, and credits.
Start the high-demand marks with silence or a very restrained instrumental. Reserve more noticeable music for the low-demand marks and transitions. This is an application of the extraneous-load principle, not a claim that one genre is inherently educational.
Choose musical qualities that leave room for speech
Prefer instrumental clarity
Lyrics introduce language that competes directly with narration. For a science explainer, begin with an instrumental track whose arrangement has enough space for speech. Avoid prominent vocal hooks, spoken samples, call-and-response phrases, and melodies that sound like a second voice.
Look for a stable, unobtrusive arrangement
A restrained arrangement usually has fewer sudden entrances, dramatic risers, dense high-frequency layers, or abrupt rhythmic changes. These features can pull attention away at exactly the moment a narrator introduces a key fact. A simple texture can still establish mood without demanding that viewers follow it.
Use tempo and genre as editing choices, not prescriptions
The available evidence does not identify an ideal BPM or genre for science videos. A slow piano track is not automatically less distracting than a moderate electronic pulse, and a classical cue is not automatically more educational. Judge the actual recording against the narration, not the label attached to it.

Match energy to visual function
For a transition or montage, a track with a clear pulse can help signal movement. Under a detailed explanation, the same pulse may become an attention competitor. Choose a cue that can be edited, faded, or removed at section boundaries rather than one whose climax is essential to its identity.

Mix music around the information, not the other way around
There is no supported universal loudness ratio in the cited sources, so do not treat a preset number as proof of intelligibility. Make the decision by listening to the finished combination on ordinary playback equipment.
- Build a narration-first mix. Set speech and any meaningful demonstration sound so every word and detail is intelligible before adding music.
- Add the track quietly. Bring music up from silence until it supports the intended tone, then stop before it attracts attention during a sentence.
- Check masking at information changes. Listen where a new term, number, qualification, or conclusion appears. If the music makes you work to catch the phrase, lower it or remove it there.
- Automate section changes. Fade music down before a dense explanation and restore it only after the information-heavy passage ends. Do not rely on one level for the entire video.
- Check meaningful non-speech audio. If a machine, animal, environment, or demonstration provides evidence, make sure the soundtrack does not obscure it.
- Test normal devices. Listen through inexpensive earbuds, laptop speakers, a phone, and headphones if those match your audience. A mix that works only on studio monitors is not finished.
These are practical editing checks derived from the evidence about competing auditory demands, not measured thresholds from the experiments.
Run a two-version test before publishing
Do not decide from your own emotional reaction to the track. Produce two otherwise identical cuts:
| Version | Audio treatment | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| A | Voice and meaningful production sound only | Baseline clarity and learning without a soundtrack |
| B | The same edit with restrained music in selected sections | Whether music adds useful tone or engagement without reducing understanding |
Show both versions to representative viewers, ideally people with a similar level of prior knowledge to your intended audience. Keep the comparison fair: use the same visuals, narration, captions, pacing, and playback conditions.
Ask clarity questions
- Which explanation was easier to follow?
- Where, if anywhere, did the audio compete with the narrator?
- Could the viewer identify the main claim and the evidence supporting it?
Check learning separately from enjoyment
- Ask the viewer to state the main idea without looking back at the video.
- Ask for a short application: what would happen under a changed condition, or which evidence supports the conclusion?
- Compare errors and omissions between versions rather than treating preference as the result.
A version that receives more praise for atmosphere but produces weaker recall or application has not improved the instructional outcome. The direct study’s divergence between engagement and learning is the reason to measure both.
Choose music legally for the platform and use case
YouTube Audio Library
For a video intended for YouTube, the platform’s own Audio Library is the clearest starting point. YouTube Help states: “Only music and sound effects from the Audio Library are known to YouTube to be copyright-safe.” That is a platform-specific statement, not a blanket legal guarantee for use on other services.

In YouTube Studio, open the Audio Library and search or filter by mood, genre, artist, attribution requirement, and track length. New releases are added twice a month according to the support information. Tracks with the attribution-not-required filter avoid a credit requirement; Creative Commons tracks require the specified credit in the video description.

YouTube says eligible YouTube Partner Program creators may monetize videos that use Audio Library music and sound effects. Confirm the status shown for the individual track before publishing, because eligibility and terms belong to the track and platform.
Do not equate “free” with cleared
YouTube warns that music uploaded by other channels or labeled “free” can still trigger Content ID restrictions. Writing a credit line does not create permission. For any source outside the Audio Library, read the actual license and verify:
- Whether YouTube, other social platforms, podcasts, websites, classrooms, and client channels are covered.
- Whether monetization and advertising are permitted.
- Whether attribution is required and what wording must be used.
- Whether the license covers the full video, trailers, clips, livestreams, and future versions.
- Whether a subscription download remains cleared after the subscription ends.
- Whether the permission applies to your country and intended audience.
A track allowed in a short-form upload may not be allowed in a longer video or commercial distribution. Keep a copy of the license, invoice or download record, required attribution, and the date you checked the terms.
Understand education-program limits
Some commercial music catalogs offer education programs with narrower conditions than their standard commercial plans. One such program requires a school or university partnership and excludes monetization; commercial publishing requires an appropriate separate plan. Treat this as a reminder to inspect the exact plan rather than assuming that “education,” “student,” or “teacher” access covers a monetized public channel.

| Video situation | Starting choice | Reason |

| Walking through a calculation | Silence or an extremely restrained bed, with fades around each step | Numbers, units, and intermediate results are easy to miss |
| Fieldwork montage with little narration | Instrumental music may carry the montage | The visual sequence has lower verbal demand, provided natural evidence remains audible |

| Interview with a scientist | Keep speech dominant; use music for opening, closing, or transitions | Natural phrasing and qualifications carry meaning |
| Animated title and chapter cards | Use a short cue with a clear entry and exit | Music can signal structure without covering an explanation |
Troubleshoot distraction by symptom
Viewers miss words when the music enters
Lower the track before changing the narration. If intelligibility returns only when the music is nearly inaudible, remove it from that passage. A fade timed to the sentence boundary is usually more effective than applying one global reduction.

The music feels repetitive or hypnotic
Shorten the cue, remove a loop, or reserve it for transitions. Repetition that is harmless under a montage can become an attention demand during a long explanation.
The track creates the wrong emotional interpretation
Remove it from the claim rather than trying to force the narration to match the soundtrack. Somber or triumphant music can make tentative evidence sound certain. Let the words and visuals communicate the strength of the finding.
Natural sound disappears
Automate music out around the relevant recording. If the sound is evidence, label it in the edit and protect it as you would protect a spoken number.
The test audience prefers the music but remembers less
Keep the music only in sections where it does not reduce performance, or publish the no-music version. Enjoyment is useful feedback about tone, not a substitute for recall and application.
A final production checklist
- Have you identified every passage containing unfamiliar terms, numbers, evidence, or causal reasoning?
- Does each music cue have a specific purpose such as tone, transition, or montage support?
- Can viewers hear narration and meaningful natural sound on ordinary devices?
- Did you avoid assuming that a genre, BPM, or preset level is universally safe?
- Did you compare a silent cut with a restrained-music cut?
- Did you test both clarity and recall or application, not just enjoyment?
- Is the exact track licensed for the platform, monetization status, geography, clients, and distribution period you intend?
- Have you saved the license terms and prepared any required attribution?
The decision in one sentence
For a science video, treat music as optional punctuation: remove it wherever viewers must process facts, and use a legally cleared, restrained instrumental only where testing shows that it adds tone without taking attention away from the explanation.
