Choose a mattress firmness by combining the position you sleep in most with your body weight—not by choosing the firmest bed you can tolerate. Use the ranges below as a starting point, then judge whether the mattress cushions pressure points without letting your body sink in ways that feel unsupported. Firmness ratings are subjective, and a mattress that feels firm is not automatically supportive.

Firmness and support are different things

Firmness describes how the mattress surface feels when you lie on it, from softer to firmer. Support describes whether the mattress helps you maintain a comfortable, reasonably aligned position rather than allowing excessive sagging. The two qualities are related, but neither guarantees the other: a softer mattress can still feel supportive, while a firm surface can feel uncomfortable if it does not contour enough for your body.

There is no universally accepted measurement for mattress firmness. A 1–10 scale is common in consumer guides, with lower numbers generally indicating a softer feel and higher numbers a firmer one, but manufacturers may use their own systems. Treat a rating as a rough description within that maker’s lineup. A mattress labeled “6” by one company is not necessarily equivalent to another company’s “6.”

Sleep Foundation puts the distinction plainly: “While consumers often confuse them, support and firmness are two separate traits.” The organization also notes that each manufacturer may use its own system because there is no universally accepted firmness measurement. These are useful reminders when comparing labels, not reasons to ignore your own comfort.

That makes the product description more useful when it explains the surface feel, comfort layers, contouring, and how the mattress is intended to support the body. Use the number to narrow choices, not as a precise measurement or a promise about how the bed will feel to you. If a maker describes a mattress as medium-firm, look for what that means in its own lineup and what the comfort layers are designed to feel like.

Start with your usual sleep position and weight

Your sleeping position helps identify where you may need pressure relief or resistance to sinking. Your weight affects how deeply you sink into the same mattress: lighter sleepers may experience it as firmer, while heavier sleepers may experience it as softer. Height, body shape, and how weight is distributed can also change the feel, so two people in the same weight range may not have identical preferences.

The following ranges are a starting guide from Sleep Foundation, not a clinical standard or a guarantee of fit. The scale is the 1–10 consumer scale described above.

Sleep position Under 130 lb 130–230 lb Over 230 lb
Side Soft (3) to medium (5) Medium-soft (4) to medium (5) Medium-firm (6) to firm (7)
Back Soft (3) to medium (5) Medium (5) to firm (7) Firm (7–8) to extra firm (9)
Stomach Medium-soft (4) to medium-firm (6) Medium (5) to firm (7) Firm (7–8) to extra firm (9)
Combination Soft (3) to medium (5) Medium-soft (4) to medium-firm (6) Firm (7–8)

Sleep Foundation’s Mattress Firmness: Finding the Best Firmness for You! provides these indicative ranges. Use the row that best describes how you spend most of the night. If you switch positions often, start with your most-used position and look toward a middle option within its range that still feels comfortable when you turn.

The weight bands are broad, so do not treat 130 or 230 pounds as a point where a specific mattress suddenly becomes right or wrong. If you are close to a boundary, compare the neighboring ranges as well as your usual position. Your body shape and the way weight is distributed may matter as much as the category alone. The range is there to help you form a shortlist; your experience on the mattress is the next check.

If you mostly sleep on your side

Side sleepers often need enough contouring to cushion the shoulders and hips, which press into the mattress in this position. If the surface feels as though it pushes those areas upward rather than cushioning them, a softer option within your suggested range may be worth considering. But soft is not automatically better: if your body sinks in a way that feels uncomfortable or difficult to settle into, compare a somewhat firmer feel.

Weight changes the likely starting point. In Sleep Foundation’s guide, side sleepers under 130 pounds start between soft and medium, while those in the 130–230-pound band start between medium-soft and medium. The over-230-pound range moves to medium-firm through firm. These are not guarantees: a lighter person may still prefer a firmer surface, and a heavier person should not assume the firmest possible mattress will feel best. Focus on whether your shoulders and hips feel cushioned without a sense of excessive sinking.

If you mostly sleep on your back

Back sleepers generally look for a balance: enough contouring to feel comfortable, with enough resistance to avoid an uncomfortable sense of the midsection sinking too far. The table spans a broad range because weight changes how deeply a person sinks. Use your own feel on the mattress, rather than the word “firm,” to judge whether the balance works for you.

Zinus 8 Inch Twin Cooling Essential Memory Foam Mattress, Medium Feel
  • COOLING COMFORT AT A GREAT VALUE – Cooling Gel Memory Foam pulls heat away from your body while a breathable cover promotes airflow throughout the night. Quality cooling comfort at a price that works for you.
  • PRESSURE RELIEF WHERE YOU NEED IT MOST – Memory foam contours to your body to cushion pressure points at the shoulders, hips, and joints while absorbing motion across the surface. Sleep comfortably, even if your partner tosses and turns.
  • THE PERFECT BALANCE OF COMFORT AND SUPPORT – Designed with a versatile medium feel, this mattress cushions without sinking and supports without feeling firm. Ideal for side, back, and combination sleepers alike.
  • FIBERGLASS FREE FOR PEACE OF MIND – No fiberglass anywhere in the construction. Instead, a carbon-rayon flame barrier provides dependable fire protection using certified safe materials you can feel good about bringing home.
  • CERTIFIED SAFE MATERIALS – Crafted with CertiPUR-US certified foam and an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified cover. Independently tested and made without harmful chemicals for safer, healthier sleep.

As a starting point, Sleep Foundation places back sleepers under 130 pounds in a soft-to-medium band, the 130–230-pound group in a medium-to-firm band, and those over 230 pounds in a firm-to-extra-firm band. If the middle of your body seems to sink too much, compare a firmer option; if the surface feels as though it presses upward or does not contour comfortably, consider a softer feel in the appropriate range. Neither sensation is a diagnosis. It is a way to describe your comfort while comparing mattresses.

If you mostly sleep on your stomach

Stomach sleepers commonly start with a firmer surface to limit sinking around the hips and abdomen. That is a tendency, not a rule that every stomach sleeper needs a hard bed. Compare options within the table’s range and pay attention to whether the middle of your body feels as though it is sinking excessively or being pushed uncomfortably upward.

The listed range shifts with weight: under 130 pounds, it runs from medium-soft to medium-firm; at 130–230 pounds, from medium to firm; and over 230 pounds, from firm to extra firm. The point is not to select the highest number automatically. A mattress that feels too hard may not be comfortable simply because it limits sinking. Weigh the surface sensation and your own preference alongside the broad position-and-weight guide.

If you change positions during the night

Combination sleepers can use their most frequent position as the anchor. If you regularly move between positions, consider a middle firmness in the applicable range rather than optimizing only for the position you start in. A mattress that feels comfortable when you turn matters more than matching a single label.

Sleep Foundation’s combination-sleeper ranges are soft to medium for people under 130 pounds, medium-soft to medium-firm for those from 130 to 230 pounds, and firm to medium-firm for those over 230 pounds. If you move between, for example, side and back sleeping, think about both pressure relief at the shoulders and hips and your comfort around the midsection. Use the most-used position to set a starting band, then check that the mattress still feels acceptable in the other positions you commonly return to.

Turn the range into a shortlist

  1. Identify your usual position. Consider where you spend the greatest part of the night, not only the position in which you fall asleep. If you move frequently, note the positions you return to.
  2. Find your weight band. Use the table to identify a broad firmness range. If you are near a boundary, treat the adjoining ranges as a guide rather than assuming the cutoff determines your choice.
  3. Compare descriptions within a maker’s range. Look for information about surface feel, contouring, comfort layers, and support. Do not compare numeric ratings across companies as if they were measured on one shared scale.
  4. Notice pressure and sinking. When you have a chance to try a mattress, pay attention to whether your shoulders, hips, or midsection feel excessively pressured, sink in a way that seems uncomfortable, or feel pushed upward. This is a personal comfort check, not a diagnostic test.
  5. Check the purchase terms. If ordering online, read the specific seller’s trial, return, and refund conditions before buying. Policies can vary by manufacturer and purchase context; do not assume a trial or return arrangement is universal.

This process is meant to narrow the choices, not produce a mathematically exact firmness. If two nearby options both fit your range, your comfort preference and the actual product construction can help decide between them.

When comparing two products, use the same questions for each: What firmness does the maker state, and what scale is it using? What does it say about construction and comfort-layer feel? Does the stated fit make sense for your position and weight? How does its description balance pressure relief with sinkage? If you share the bed, can either side’s firmness be adjusted or split? Finally, what are the actual trial, return, refund, and warranty terms for the product and purchase you are considering? A checklist like this makes two manufacturers’ marketing descriptions easier to compare without pretending their numbers are standardized.

If you are shopping online, product descriptions can help you narrow the shortlist, but they cannot tell you exactly how the mattress will feel in your body. Sleep Foundation’s How to Buy a Mattress Online advises considering weight, sleep position, and preference. Before placing an order, read the seller’s actual conditions rather than relying on a general claim that the mattress has a trial or a return option. The policy may depend on the manufacturer and purchase context, and the relevant terms are the ones attached to your specific transaction.

Account for body shape and pressure points

Weight bands simplify a more individual question. A person’s height and weight distribution can change how deeply different parts of the body sink, and the same mattress may feel different to two sleepers with the same body weight. Use the table to choose where to begin, then pay attention to the parts of your body that contact the surface and to how settled or strained the position feels.

For a side sleeper, that may mean comparing how the shoulders and hips feel. For back or stomach sleeping, notice the sensation around the midsection as well as overall comfort. These observations help you compare products; they do not establish a medical diagnosis or prove that a particular firmness will correct an alignment problem.

Also distinguish between a surface that feels comfortable at first and one that continues to feel comfortable as you settle into your usual position. If you can try a mattress, assess it in the positions you actually use rather than judging it only while sitting on the edge or lying down briefly in a position you rarely sleep in. Notice whether pressure points feel cushioned, whether the body seems to sink more than you prefer, and whether a firmer surface feels as if it is pushing back too strongly. These are subjective observations, not formal tests; they are useful because they let you describe what you prefer when comparing alternatives.

Choose together if you share the bed

For couples, consider both sleepers’ positions, weights, and firmness preferences rather than choosing only for one person. A middle firmness can be a practical compromise when both people find it comfortable. Some products offer different firmness on each side, which may be relevant when one shared feel does not suit both sleepers. Compare the actual product’s stated options and purchase terms rather than assuming every mattress can be split or adjusted.

When trying a shared mattress, each sleeper should assess the surface independently. A rating that suits one partner’s weight and position may feel too soft or too firm to the other, because both body weight and preference affect the experience.

A practical way to compare is for each person to identify their own usual position, weight range, and preferred surface feel before agreeing on a model. Then look for an option that both find acceptable, or check whether the specific product offers separate firmness on each side. A compromise should not be based solely on averaging the two partners’ preferred firmness numbers: ratings are not standardized between brands, and each person may experience the same surface differently.

What the evidence says about medium-firm mattresses

A 2015 systematic review of controlled mattress-design trials, published in Sleep Health: Journal of the National Sleep Foundation, reported that a subjectively medium-firm and self-adjusted mattress was optimal for sleep comfort, quality, and spinal alignment in the studies reviewed. That finding describes the evidence covered by the review; it does not show that medium-firm is best for every sleeper, position, body weight, or mattress model.

A randomized, double-blind, controlled, multicentre trial published in The Lancet in 2003 found that a medium-firm mattress improved pain and disability compared with a firm mattress among people with chronic nonspecific low-back pain. The trial did not test every mattress, sleeper, or diagnosis. It is not a basis for treating all back pain by changing firmness, and it does not replace individual medical advice.

  • Easy Unbox & Expand: Vacuum compressed queen mattress in a box, easy to handle, fully expands within 72 hours, compatible with all queen bed bases.

Together, these findings give context to why medium-firm is often discussed, but they do not override the practical fit factors in this guide. The review’s finding was about the trials it examined, and the Lancet trial concerned people with a particular type of chronic nonspecific low-back pain. Neither establishes that the same firmness will suit every body, sleeping position, or health situation. Use clinical findings as context rather than as a universal shopping instruction.

Use pillows as a separate comfort adjustment

Mattress sinkage can affect the pillow height that feels comfortable. Sleep Foundation’s firmness guidance notes that a softer mattress, which permits more sinkage, may pair better with a lower-loft pillow, while a firmer surface may call for more loft. Treat this as a related adjustment to head and neck comfort—not as a substitute for choosing a mattress that feels right for your position and body.

Keep the decision in proportion: first choose a mattress firmness starting point from position and weight, then consider whether pillow loft feels appropriate on that surface. The pillow note is relevant because the mattress changes how far the body settles, but it does not make a mattress choice automatically correct or incorrect.

Common firmness-selection mistakes

  • Choosing the firmest option because it sounds more supportive. Firmness is surface feel; support is a separate quality. Compare how the mattress feels and what the maker says about its construction rather than treating “firm” as a guarantee.
  • Using position without considering weight. The same model can feel firmer to a lighter person and softer to a heavier one. Start with both factors together.
  • Assuming a number is universal. Manufacturer ratings are not standardized. Compare ratings within a maker’s own descriptions and use materials and feel information to add context.
  • Treating a general range as a prescription. The Sleep Foundation ranges are consumer guidance. They help establish a shortlist, but do not account for every body shape or preference.
  • Assuming online purchase terms are interchangeable. Read the actual trial, return, and refund conditions attached to the seller and purchase you are considering.
  • Assuming a single number captures your fit. A rating does not show by itself how a mattress will contour, how its comfort layers feel, or whether it will work for your particular position and weight.
  • Assuming the same choice works for both partners. Consider both sleepers’ position, weight, and preference. Check the specific product if separate firmness options matter.
  • Treating a study result as a personal prescription. The 2015 review and 2003 trial offer limited findings, not proof that medium-firm is best for every sleeper or a cure for back pain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What mattress firmness is best for a side sleeper?

Sleep Foundation’s starting ranges are soft (3) to medium (5) below 130 pounds, medium-soft (4) to medium (5) at 130–230 pounds, and medium-firm (6) to firm (7) above 230 pounds. Side sleepers often look for contouring at the shoulders and hips, but these ranges are not guarantees; consider how the mattress feels to you.

Do heavier sleepers need a firmer mattress?

Weight affects how deeply you sink: a heavier sleeper may experience the same mattress as softer than a lighter sleeper. Sleep Foundation’s position-and-weight ranges generally shift firmer at higher weight bands, but that does not mean every heavier person needs the firmest mattress. Consider position, body shape, pressure points, and personal preference too.

Is a firm mattress more supportive?

Not necessarily. Firmness describes surface feel, while support concerns how well the mattress helps you maintain a comfortable position without undue sagging. A soft mattress can still feel supportive, and a firm one can be uncomfortable if it does not contour enough.

Is medium-firm the best mattress firmness for everyone?

No. A 2015 systematic review reported that subjectively medium-firm and self-adjusted mattresses were optimal for comfort, quality, and spinal alignment in the studies it reviewed, but that does not establish a universal best firmness. The 2003 Lancet trial found improved pain and disability with medium-firm versus firm mattresses among people with chronic nonspecific low-back pain; it is not a treatment claim for everyone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should couples choose a mattress firmness?

Consider both sleepers’ positions, weights, and preferences. A middle firmness may be a workable compromise if both find it comfortable; some products offer different firmness on each side. Check the specific product’s options rather than assuming split or adjustable firmness is available.

Can I compare firmness numbers between mattress brands?

Use the numbers as rough descriptions, not as standardized measurements. Manufacturers may use different firmness systems, so compare each maker’s description of surface feel, comfort layers, contouring, and support, along with the actual trial and return terms.

The Bottom Line

Use your most common sleep position and weight together to find a starting range, then compare how a mattress feels at your shoulders, hips, or midsection. Firmness labels are not standardized, and firm does not automatically mean supportive. Treat the ranges as a shortlist—not a prescription—and check the specific product’s trial and return terms before buying.
