Show only the Mac metrics that help you spot a problem you care about: CPU utilization for processor load, memory pressure and swap for memory constraints, disk space or activity depending on the question, network speed for current transfers, and temperature when sensor readings are useful on your Mac. Keep the menu bar glanceable; use the monitor’s expanded view or Activity Monitor to investigate what you see.
Choose metrics by the problem you want to notice
A menu bar monitor is an overview, not a diagnosis. Start with a concrete question—such as “Is the processor busy?”—and select the smallest set of indicators that can answer it. A number is easier to scan for a threshold; a compact graph is more useful when you want to see recent direction.
CPU: Is the processor busy?
A utilization number or small graph can flag processor demand. Apple’s Activity Monitor separates CPU usage into System, User, and Idle percentages; Apple defines System as “The percentage of CPU capability that’s being used by processes that belong to macOS.” Its CPU view and Dock graph provide built-in ways to see current or recent activity. If the bar suggests sustained load, inspect processes in Activity Monitor rather than treating the summary as an explanation.
Memory: Is memory becoming a constraint?
For diagnosing memory pressure, prioritize a pressure indicator and swap context over a used-memory number by itself. Pressure helps indicate whether memory resources are constrained; swap shows that data is being moved between memory and storage. Used and free RAM can add context, but a single “used” figure does not establish that the Mac is struggling. Apple’s Activity Monitor memory view provides a built-in place to investigate memory use.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Disk: Do you mean space or activity?
Disk capacity and disk activity answer different questions. Used/free space helps you notice a storage-capacity problem; read/write rates help you see whether the disk is busy right now. Choose one or both only if those questions matter to your routine. A full disk will not necessarily show heavy activity, and high activity does not by itself mean storage is nearly full.
Network: Is data moving, and how much?
Upload and download rates show current throughput. Cumulative data totals answer how much has transferred over a period, while per-app breakdowns can help identify which application is using the connection. These are distinct views: a current rate is not a record of total usage, and a total does not show whether traffic is active now.

Temperature: Is a sensor reading useful for this workload?
A temperature display can add context when you are checking whether a demanding task coincides with elevated sensor values. Do not assume that a sensor name corresponds to an individual CPU or GPU core. Stats’ project documentation says, “CPU/GPU sensors are simply thermal zones (sensors) on the CPU/GPU.” Sensor labels and availability can vary with hardware and software, so use the reading as thermal context rather than a precise per-core measurement.

- Name the event. Decide whether you want to notice slowdown, memory pressure, low storage, unexpected transfer, or thermal behavior.
- Pick one or two indicators. Avoid crowding the bar with a summary and several detailed readings unless you routinely use that detail.
- Choose a display form. Use a number when threshold recognition matters; use a compact graph when recent direction matters. Stats documents configurable chart, number, gauge, and dot widgets. iStat Menus lets users choose what appears in the bar versus its opened menu, and documents a combined menu-bar item.
- Investigate in a detailed view. Open the monitor’s panel or Activity Monitor when you need process-level information or history. A glanceable value can tell you where to look, not what caused the change.
- Revisit the selection after changes. A different Mac, macOS release, monitor version, or workload can change which metrics are available or meaningful.

Account for sensor limits, permissions, and overhead
Stats’ project documentation describes CPU/GPU readings as thermal zones rather than individual-core temperatures and notes that Apple changes sensor keys with each new SoC. As a result, a numbered sensor label should not be interpreted as a precise temperature for a specific core.
The same project documentation identifies Sensors and Bluetooth as among its least efficient modules, and says disabling them can reduce CPU usage and power impact in some cases. That is the developer’s guidance, not a controlled comparison of monitoring apps. Stats also says beta macOS versions are unsupported. For macOS 26, it documents a System Settings > Menu Bar permission for showing Stats items; Wi-Fi network names require Location Services permission. System controls can change, so check the current macOS settings and project guidance if an item does not appear.

Make the final selection
- For processor demand, start with CPU utilization or a compact graph.
- For memory constraints, favor pressure and swap context over used memory alone.
- For storage, choose capacity, activity, or both according to the problem you are tracking.
- For network use, distinguish current upload/download rates from totals or per-app activity.
- For temperature, include a reading only when its sensor meaning is useful on your Mac.
Keep the persistent display focused, then use a detailed view when a metric changes. That approach makes the bar a useful signal without mistaking it for a diagnosis.
