The right laser-cutting software is determined first by your machine’s controller and firmware—not by the prettiest drawing interface. Identify that control system, then verify the required license, artwork imports, machine-ready output, and model-specific functions such as work-area marking or curved-material processing. This order prevents buying software that can draw well but cannot run your laser or expose the features you need.

1. Identify the controller and firmware before comparing software

A laser uses a controller to interpret movement, power, speed, focus and other job instructions. Software must generate the language that controller understands. Two machines that look similar can therefore require different software settings and license tiers.

Start with the literal setup question: What controller does your laser use? Find the answer on the machine’s specification plate, controller board, purchase documentation or manufacturer support page. Record the exact model and firmware family rather than only the brand name. If documentation lists several controller options, confirm which one is installed in your machine.

Controller families you may encounter

Controller category Firmware or controller examples documented by LightBurn What to verify before purchase
GCode GRBL, Smoothieware, Marlin, FluidNC, grblHAL and xTool Exact machine profile, connection method and whether the software’s standard license supports the controller
DSP Ruida, Trocen and TopWisdom Exact controller model and whether a Pro license is required
Galvo EZCAD2, EZCAD2 Lite, EZCAD3 and BSL Exact galvo controller and whether the software supports the machine’s scanner and source configuration

These categories are not interchangeable labels. A program that can import your SVG may still be unable to send a runnable job to the machine. Ask the manufacturer or software vendor for a compatibility statement for the exact model, not merely for a controller family that sounds similar.

When the controller is unclear

  1. Read the machine’s technical specification and controller-board label.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s setup instructions for the firmware name, USB or network method and supported control software.
  3. Install the vendor’s trial or discovery utility, if offered, only after confirming it will not alter machine settings.
  4. Contact support with the machine model, controller name, firmware version and a photo of the controller label.
  5. Do not purchase a permanent license until the vendor confirms that controller combination.

2. Match the license to the controller

License tiers often reflect the type of controller the software must drive. In LightBurn’s compatibility guidance, any LightBurn license works with GCode machines, while DSP and Galvo machines require the Pro license. Confirm the exact model and tier before paying; a license that covers a GCode machine does not automatically cover a DSP or Galvo installation.

Separate the software license from update entitlement. LightBurn’s product page currently states that renewing for one year of updates costs US$40. That is a changeable price, so verify the current amount, what the renewal includes and whether an expired update period affects activation or only access to newer releases.

Questions to ask before checkout

  • Is the machine classified as GCode, DSP or Galvo by the software vendor?
  • Does the license cover one computer, multiple computers or a particular user account?
  • Is the controller supported directly, or only through a manufacturer plug-in or export workflow?
  • What happens if you replace the controller later?
  • Are updates optional after the licensed version works, and what does renewal cost at the time you buy?

Keep the invoice and activation details with your machine records. If you operate several lasers, map each machine to its controller and license before installing anything.

3. Decide whether you need an all-in-one layout and control workflow

For many operators, the useful distinction is not “professional” versus “beginner” software. It is whether one application can take artwork from import through layout, parameter assignment and machine output. LightBurn describes itself as laser layout, editing and control software and supports many Ruida, Trocen, TopWisdom and GCode controllers. That combination can reduce file hand-offs, but only when the controller and model are actually supported.

Evaluate the workflow in four separate stages:

  1. Design: Can you draw or edit the vector shapes, align objects, set dimensions and prepare separate cut, score and engrave elements?
  2. Preparation: Can you assign the intended operation, order passes, set speed and power values, and position the job relative to the machine origin?
  3. Preview: Can you inspect the tool path and estimated coverage before sending the job?
  4. Control and output: Can the software send the job directly or save the machine-ready file format required by the controller?

If one program handles only design, plan the exact export and import hand-off to the control application. Every hand-off is a chance for a scale change, missing font, unsupported effect or incorrect origin, so test it with a small, inexpensive material sample.

4. Check artwork imports and text handling

Import breadth matters when files come from customers, vector editors or online design tools. LightBurn documents support for AI, SVG, DXF, PDF and PLT/HPGL imports, alongside common vector and image formats. Confirm whether your chosen software imports the file types you actually receive; a long format list is useful only if curves, layers, fills and dimensions survive the import.

Import checklist

  • Scale: Compare a known dimension in the source file with the imported size. Confirm the document units before cutting.
  • Geometry: Check for open contours, duplicated lines and accidental overlaps that could cause a path to cut twice.
  • Layers or colors: Verify that each operation is assigned to the intended layer, color or object class.
  • Images: Confirm the software’s raster settings and whether the image is embedded or linked.
  • Text: Make sure every font used by the artwork is installed on the computer running the laser software, or convert the text to paths before importing.

LightBurn specifically cautions that imported text requires the fonts to be installed or the text to be converted to paths. Converting to paths makes the artwork more portable, but it removes ordinary text editing. Keep an editable source file before conversion, and use a clear naming convention so the production version cannot be confused with the editable original.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a customer sends a PDF or AI file

  1. Ask whether the file contains live text, linked images or effects that may not export as simple curves.
  2. Open it in the laser software and inspect dimensions, line weights and closed shapes.
  3. Install the required fonts or request an outlined version.
  4. Run a preview and perform a low-power test on scrap material before committing to the final sheet.

5. Confirm the software can produce machine-ready output

A design file is not necessarily a job file. The control application must translate geometry and settings into the format expected by the controller. LightBurn’s file-management documentation describes saving machine-ready output appropriate to the laser type, such as GCode or Ruida files.

Before selecting software, ask exactly what your machine expects:

Question Why it affects the choice
Does the controller accept a streamed job, a saved file, or both? A program may draw and preview correctly but lack the required transfer method.
Which output format is required? GCode, Ruida and other controller formats are not interchangeable.
How are origin and homing handled? Incorrect origin settings can place a valid job in the wrong location.
Are speed, power, frequency and pass settings represented correctly? Missing or misinterpreted parameters can change the cut or engraving result.
Can the software retain a reusable machine profile? Profiles reduce setup mistakes when you switch between materials or machines.

A safe first-job procedure

  1. Create or import a simple square with one internal circle and a small text label.
  2. Confirm the imported dimensions against a ruler or caliper.
  3. Assign separate operations for marking and cutting, if your machine supports both.
  4. Set the correct origin, frame the work area and verify that the head travels where expected without firing the laser.
  5. Preview the path and save the project using the machine’s native job format when required.
  6. Run the test on scrap material at conservative settings, then inspect the result before using production stock.

Keep the original project and the exported machine file together. If a job must be reproduced, you need both the editable settings and the exact output that was sent to the controller.

6. Verify model-specific functions, not just basic control

Controller compatibility does not guarantee full feature parity. A manufacturer may expose functions through its own application that a third-party controller program does not implement.

The xTool S1 example

xTool states that LightBurn can control the S1, but does not support certain S1 functions, including marking the processing area and curved-material processing. xTool recommends XCS when you need the S1’s full feature set. This limitation applies to the S1 guidance; do not generalize it to every xTool model or to other manufacturers’ machines without a model-specific statement.

Use a feature checklist for your exact machine:

  • Work-area marking or boundary indication
  • Curved, rotary or cylindrical-material processing
  • Camera alignment and registration
  • Automatic focus or material-height routines
  • Air-assist, exhaust or accessory control
  • Pass-through, conveyor or batch features
  • Homing, limit switches and recovery after an interrupted job

If a feature is essential, obtain written confirmation that the software supports it on your model. “Can control the machine” may mean only that basic jobs can be sent; it does not promise every accessory or automation function.

7. Compare software using a decision matrix

Score each candidate against the same requirements. Mark an item as “confirmed,” “requires a plug-in or workaround,” or “not stated” rather than assuming that an unmentioned feature exists.

Decision axis What to record Pass condition
Controller and firmware Exact controller category, model and firmware Vendor explicitly lists your combination
License Required tier, activation terms and update policy One-time and recurring costs fit your use
Design and editing Drawing, alignment, node editing, layers and operation assignment Daily work can be completed without unnecessary file transfers
Import formats AI, SVG, DXF, PDF, PLT/HPGL and raster formats you receive Your real customer and design files open with dimensions intact
Text handling Font installation, path conversion and editable-source workflow Text can be reproduced reliably on the production computer
Machine output Streaming method and file format such as GCode or Ruida Output is accepted by the controller and preserves settings
Model-specific features Work-area marking, curved processing and accessories Every required function is confirmed for the exact model
Support and recovery Documentation, profile backup and interrupted-job behavior You can diagnose a failed transfer or resume safely

The matrix prevents a common mistake: choosing a tool because it has strong drawing features while overlooking a missing output format or machine function.

8. Choose a workflow for common situations

You are buying your first diode or GCode machine

Identify the firmware family first, then select software whose standard license supports that controller. Prioritize clear machine profiles, reliable framing and straightforward import of the formats you already use. Test a small vector-and-text job before investing in a large material sheet.

You already own a DSP laser

Confirm the DSP controller model and budget for the license tier that supports it. Pay particular attention to the machine-ready file format and origin behavior. A successful preview is not enough; verify that the controller receives the correct file and that the job starts at the intended corner.

You operate a Galvo marking system

Check support for the exact EZCAD or BSL controller variant and the required Pro tier where applicable. Verify scanner, field-size and marking workflows with the machine vendor before relying on third-party control software for production.

You use an xTool S1 and need every built-in function

Use the manufacturer’s XCS workflow when processing-area marking or curved-material processing is part of the job. LightBurn remains a possible control option for supported basic work, but the documented S1 limitations mean it should not be treated as a complete replacement for XCS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You exchange files with customers

Standardize an intake checklist: preferred format, units, outlined text, cut and engrave layers, and a reference dimension. Keep an editable master and a validated machine-ready file, and never cut an unfamiliar import without a preview and scrap test.

9. Troubleshoot the failures that selection mistakes cause

The software cannot connect to the laser

  • Recheck the controller category and exact model.
  • Confirm the selected machine profile and connection method.
  • Verify that the license tier covers the controller; DSP and Galvo use require Pro in LightBurn’s guidance.
  • Use the manufacturer’s documented firmware and driver requirements rather than substituting a similar profile.

The design imports at the wrong size

  • Check source and project units.
  • Measure a known reference dimension.
  • Look for scaling applied by the export application.
  • Save a corrected project profile so the same conversion is not repeated.

Text changes or disappears

  • Install the source fonts on the production computer, or convert text to paths.
  • Inspect converted letters for open contours and overlapping outlines.
  • Preserve the original editable text file separately from the production artwork.

The job runs, but a machine feature is unavailable

Check the model-specific feature list, not just controller compatibility. On the xTool S1, for example, LightBurn control does not include processing-area marking or curved-material processing; use XCS for those functions.

The output file is rejected

Confirm that the software is exporting the controller’s required format, such as GCode or a Ruida file, and that the selected machine profile matches the installed controller. Re-export a minimal test job and verify transfer with the machine vendor’s documented method.

10. A final pre-purchase checklist

  • Exact machine model, controller and firmware recorded
  • Software vendor confirms compatibility with that combination
  • Correct license tier identified; DSP and Galvo requirements checked
  • Current purchase and update costs verified, including the currently listed US$40 LightBurn annual update renewal
  • Required AI, SVG, DXF, PDF, PLT/HPGL and raster imports tested with real files
  • Fonts installed or converted to paths, with editable originals retained
  • Machine-ready output format and transfer method confirmed
  • Origin, framing, preview and recovery workflow tested on scrap material
  • Model-specific functions such as work-area marking and curved processing confirmed
  • Machine profiles, projects and exported job files backed up

The dependable choice is the software that matches your controller, license, file formats and required machine functions in that order. Drawing tools matter, but they cannot compensate for an unsupported control language or a missing production feature.
