The safest setup is layered: choose a title whose premise fits your group, turn on Family-Friendly when the game offers it, set the Profanity Filter to Strict when you want profanity rejected, and enable Moderation if a trusted person can review submissions. These controls address different risks; none can make an unsuitable premise appropriate or guarantee that every upsetting response is blocked.
Start with the exact game, not just the party pack
Jackbox settings are title-specific. Before inviting players, identify the exact game and pack, then check Jackbox’s current family-filter list and moderation-support list for that title. A setting shown in one game may be absent in another, even when both are in the same pack.
Jackbox’s family-support article, updated October 14, 2025, says most games have a Family-Friendly Filter. It also explains three reasons a title may not show one: the game predates the feature, its premise is inherently family-unfriendly, or Jackbox considers its game-provided content unlikely to offend most families. Availability can change with releases or updates, so verify the menu in your installed version as well as the current support list.

What the three main controls actually do
Family-Friendly, Profanity Filter, and Moderation are complementary rather than interchangeable. Understanding their boundaries prevents a host from promising more protection than the game provides.

Jackbox’s family guidance uses this specific description for Strict mode: “Turning on profanity filtering and setting it to the ‘Strict’ setting will reject answers containing profanity.” Treat “reject” as the documented behavior, not as a guarantee that all objectionable material will disappear.
Configure the lobby before the first round
- Choose a title that fits the group. Consider the premise, not just its controls. A game built around murder, explicit themes, or adult humor may remain unsuitable after filtering.
- Open the title’s settings or lobby menu. Recent releases commonly place these options under a Content Control section. Party Pack 11’s streaming guide uses that label; older games may use different wording or omit a control entirely.
- Enable Family-Friendly when it is offered. This reduces suggestive prompts and other game-provided content identified by Jackbox as unsuitable for a family setting. Confirm that the toggle is on before creating the room.
- Set Profanity Filter to Strict when profanity rejection matters. This is the relevant choice for player answers. A less restrictive setting may allow more submissions through, while Strict can reject an answer rather than display it.
- Turn on Moderation if the title supports it and a reviewer is available. Do this before creating the room so the moderation connection can be established during play.
- Record the room code privately and protect the moderator password. For public play, limit who can see or join the room. Do not reveal the generated moderation password on a stream or in a public chat.
- Run a short test round. Confirm that the visible lobby shows the intended options and that the moderator can reach the queue before real players submit content.
How Jackbox moderation works
Moderation is a human checkpoint for supported games. Jackbox’s support article, attributed to Evan Jacover and updated October 21, 2025, says it “allows human moderators to join your game and approve or reject content before it is shown on screen.”

Host setup
- Toggle Moderation on in the game’s settings.
- Start or create the room. The game generates a moderation password.
- Give that password privately to the trusted moderator.
- The moderator opens mod.jackbox.tv in a browser and enters the password.
- Keep the moderation page open while players submit answers, captions, drawings, or other user-created material.
With moderation enabled when the room is created, moderators can join during gameplay. The reviewer should understand the pace of the game and be ready to approve harmless entries quickly without approving content merely to keep the round moving.
What happens to a rejected submission
The replacement depends on the title. Jackbox documents two outcomes: a rejected answer may be replaced with game-provided content, or the game may show it as no answer. Do not promise players that every rejection will be replaced in the same way.
Which games support it
Moderation is a separate title-by-title question. Jackbox lists supported games across selected titles in Party Packs 7 through 11, The Party Starter, The Jackbox Naughty Pack, and the four Survey Scramble modes: HILO, Speed, Squares, and Bounce. Examples from the list include Quiplash 3, Champ’d Up, and Talking Points in Pack 7, with additional games in later packs. Check the current support article for the exact title.

The Poll Mine is identified by Jackbox as having no user-entered content, so it does not use the same moderation workflow. That is a game-specific fact, not a rule that applies to every title without moderation.
Special case: The Wheel of Enormous Proportions
For The Wheel of Enormous Proportions, Jackbox specifies an Allow Player Written Responses toggle. Turning it off prevents players from writing questions and removes questions that require typed answers; Jackbox says manual moderation is not required for this title. Do not generalize that switch or workflow to other games.
Kicking disruptive players
Selected newer releases also provide a kick function. Jackbox describes kicking as room-specific and notes limits once a game is underway: a kicked player may remain visually present while disconnected, but cannot rejoin or submit new content. Kicking is a response to a participant problem, not a replacement for content settings, a private room, or clear expectations.

Family-Friendly does not mean “all player content is safe”
The Family-Friendly Filter targets suggestive material built into the game. It does not inspect every idea a player can enter. In a prompt-based game, a player might still submit an offensive joke, an insulting name, a disturbing drawing, or a reference that is not profanity. Strict profanity filtering addresses one category—profane language in answers—not every category of inappropriate content.
Moderation is the control that adds human judgment to user-generated submissions, but only where the exact title supports it. If no moderator is available, assume that player-created content can appear according to the game’s normal rules. For children or public audiences, assign an adult who can monitor the queue rather than turning on moderation and leaving it unattended.

The explicit layered recommendation above is Jackbox’s guidance for public settings. Applying the same combination at a family gathering is a practical choice, but the host should still consider the title’s theme and the ages present.

Ratings are useful context, not a suitability guarantee
Jackbox says all of its games except The Jackbox Naughty Pack are rated T for Teen, while The Jackbox Naughty Pack is rated M. The publisher describes the Family-Friendly Filter as making a supported game closer to E10+. Those are Jackbox’s characterizations of the filtered experience, not a new ESRB rating and not a promise that every family will find the result appropriate.
Jackbox lists The Jackbox Naughty Pack as containing mature themes and explicit content and says it is not intended for children. Its support list also uses Trivia Murder Party’s murder theme as an example of why a game may lack a family filter. If the premise itself is the concern, no combination of toggles solves the problem.
When a game has no Family-Friendly Filter
A missing filter can mean very different things. An older title may predate the feature. An inherently family-friendly game may not need a separate switch. A game with an adult or otherwise unsuitable premise may intentionally provide no way to remove that central theme.

Do not describe a game as family-friendly merely because it lacks profanity, and do not claim that a separate profanity setting can remove suggestive prompts supplied by the game.
Troubleshooting before players join
- The Family-Friendly option is missing: Verify the exact title, edition, and current support list. It may be an older game, an inherently family-friendly title without a toggle, or a game Jackbox considers inherently family-unfriendly.
- Profane answers still appear: Confirm that Profanity Filter is set to Strict, not merely enabled at a less restrictive level. Remember that Strict filtering concerns profanity in player answers and is not a complete offensive-content detector.
- The moderator cannot connect: Check that Moderation was enabled before the room was created, use the generated password rather than the room code, and have the moderator enter it at mod.jackbox.tv. Keep the password private.
- A rejected answer is not replaced as expected: The title determines whether the result is game-provided content or no answer. This behavior is not uniform across games.
- Players bypass the intended audience: Use a private room and access controls, keep the room code off the public stream, and remove disruptive participants where the title supports kicking. Access controls reduce unwanted joins but do not replace content filtering.
- The settings look right but the premise is wrong: Stop and select a different title. Filters change content presentation; they do not rewrite a game’s central subject.
A practical pre-game checklist
- Write down the exact title and pack.
- Check Jackbox’s current Family-Friendly Filter list and moderation list for that title.
- Read the premise and rating context, including any mature-theme warning.
- Open the lobby’s settings or Content Control section.
- Turn on Family-Friendly if available.
- Set Profanity Filter to Strict when rejecting profanity is a requirement.
- Enable Moderation only if the title supports it and a real person will monitor the queue.
- Give the generated moderation password to the moderator privately.
- Restrict room access and keep codes and passwords out of public view.
- Test the moderator connection and explain to players that rejected submissions may become replacement content or no answer.
