Choose hosting for a headless WordPress site by evaluating two layers separately: the WordPress backend that stores and serves content, and the frontend application that builds and delivers pages. The right setup depends on whether those layers—and the API, editorial preview, cache, recovery, and support workflows between them—fit your actual site. Start with compatibility and responsibilities, then compare operational terms and total cost; a generic “fast hosting” claim cannot answer those questions.
Understand what hosting does in a headless setup
In a conventional WordPress site, WordPress manages content and usually renders the public pages. In a headless setup, WordPress remains the content management system (CMS), while a separate frontend application requests content and presents it to visitors. The frontend might use a framework such as Next.js; it can be hosted separately from WordPress.
The connection is an API. WordPress provides a REST API that exposes site data as JSON, subject to visibility and authentication restrictions for private content. A frontend can also use WPGraphQL when it needs a GraphQL interface. The choice affects what the frontend requests and how the two layers handle authentication, caching, and content updates; it does not eliminate the need to host and operate WordPress.
This separation can let a configured frontend serve previously generated or cached pages even while the WordPress server is unavailable. Vercel’s WordPress-and-Next.js guide, updated November 10, 2025, describes an example using WPGraphQL and Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR). Treat continued serving as a possible outcome of a particular architecture and configuration, not as an availability guarantee for every site or host. Vercel’s integration guide illustrates the split between frontend and backend hosting.

Decide which parts of the system you need to host
One provider may offer services for multiple layers, but do not assume a plan covers the complete architecture because it is marketed for WordPress or application hosting. Map each responsibility to a provider and confirm it in the plan terms.
| System part | What it does | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress backend | Runs WordPress, stores content in its database, and exposes the chosen API. | PHP and database versions, HTTPS, update policy, plugin compatibility, API access, backups, staging, and backend support. |
| Frontend application | Builds and serves the public site, and may generate or cache pages. | Framework and build support, deployment controls, delivery geography, traffic or usage limits, preview behavior, and frontend support. |
| Connection between layers | Moves content and publication changes from WordPress to the frontend. | Authentication, API request limits, cache invalidation or rebuild triggers, preview access, and who investigates integration failures. |
Write down the provider responsible for the database, WordPress runtime, frontend builds, public delivery, editorial preview, and incidents that cross provider boundaries. If one company supplies more than one component, identify which plan and service cover each responsibility. A single invoice does not by itself establish that a single support team owns the full system.
Check the WordPress backend baseline
WordPress.org’s requirements page says, “To run WordPress, it’s recommended your host supports:” PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. It recommends Apache or Nginx, while noting that other servers can work if they support PHP and MySQL. The page also warns that older versions that remain in practical use may be end-of-life and expose sites to security vulnerabilities. These recommendations can change, so verify the page and the proposed host’s supported versions when you choose a plan. WordPress.org’s requirements page is the reference for the baseline.

- Ask which PHP and database versions the specific plan runs and whether you can select or upgrade them.
- Confirm HTTPS is available for the WordPress site and API endpoint, including any preview or staging environment used by editors.
- Check the provider’s WordPress update policy and whether the plugins your project needs are supported.
- Confirm who manages updates and what happens if an update conflicts with a plugin or custom code.
Compatibility is about your complete stack, not only the WordPress core version. Test the intended theme and plugins, API behavior, and content model on the proposed environment before committing if any dependency or cache interaction is uncertain.
Choose the API and verify it on the proposed host
REST API
The WordPress REST API is the built-in option for exposing site data as JSON. Its handbook explains that access to data depends on whether it is public or private and on the applicable visibility and authentication rules. Decide which content the frontend needs and ensure the API exposes only what should be available to that consumer. Do not design a public frontend around the assumption that drafts or other private content will be anonymously accessible. The WordPress REST API Handbook documents the API and its access model.
WPGraphQL
If the frontend will query WordPress through GraphQL, verify that the host supports the actual WPGraphQL setup. WPGraphQL’s compatibility guide states that it requires WordPress 6.0 or higher. It also notes that the /graphql endpoint depends on URL rewriting and recommends HTTPS in production. Confirm that the endpoint works on the proposed host and that its rewrite behavior is intact, rather than relying on a generic statement that WordPress plugins are supported. WPGraphQL’s compatibility guide provides these requirements.

Request limits and authentication
Ask whether API requests are limited, how limits are measured, and what response the frontend receives when a limit is reached. Confirm the authentication approach for private data and editorial previews. The relevant question is not just whether an API endpoint exists, but whether it works with your expected requests and access rules on the plan you are evaluating.
Check the API using the same endpoint, authentication approach, plugins, and representative content that the production frontend will use. For REST, verify that the intended public data is returned and private or draft data is not exposed to an unauthenticated visitor. For WPGraphQL, make sure the endpoint resolves through the host’s rewrite configuration. These checks help distinguish a working WordPress installation from a working headless backend.
Test cache behavior and content updates
Caching can occur at more than one point: WordPress or its API, the frontend application, and the delivery layer. A host’s general claim that “caching is included” does not tell you whether a newly published or edited item will appear promptly in the frontend. Trace what happens when an editor changes content, and identify which cache or generated page must be refreshed.
If you plan to use WPGraphQL Smart Cache, ask specifically whether the host supports tag-based caching and invalidation and correctly handles the X-GraphQL-Keys response header. WPGraphQL’s known-limitations documentation notes that many hosts do not support this level of cache control. Verify the complete behavior with the chosen host and frontend rather than assuming that any cache feature is sufficient. WPGraphQL’s known limitations describe these requirements.
- Publish or update representative content in a test environment.
- Check whether the frontend receives the change through its configured build, revalidation, or cache-invalidation process.
- Check what an unauthenticated visitor sees and what an editor sees in preview, including whether drafts remain private.
- Repeat the test for media and for any content type or plugin data that the production site depends on.
The exact trigger depends on the frontend and integration you build. Before signing up, ask the providers what mechanisms the plan supports and which component is responsible if a publication event fails to reach the public site.

Make editorial preview part of the hosting decision
Headless publishing changes the route from a draft in WordPress to a visible page on the frontend. Editors may need to preview unpublished content, while the public frontend must not reveal it to anonymous visitors. Confirm that the proposed setup supports the preview and authentication workflow your editors need; do not treat successful publication of public content as proof that draft preview works.

- Can an editor preview a draft in the frontend before publishing?
- How is preview access authenticated, and does it remain private?
- Does publishing trigger a frontend build, revalidation, or another update process?
- Can editors preview changes to images and other media as well as text?
- Who supports the workflow if WordPress accepts a change but the frontend preview or published page does not update?
Test with the real content model and the plugins editors will use. Preview behavior can depend on configuration across the CMS and frontend, so a provider’s feature description alone may not establish that the complete editorial workflow is covered.
Compare recovery, operations, and support terms
For the WordPress backend, establish what is backed up and how restoration works. For the frontend, establish how deployments are controlled and how a previous working version can be restored. These are separate recovery questions: a frontend rollback does not restore WordPress content, and a CMS backup does not necessarily restore the frontend application or its deployment configuration.
- Backups: Ask what data and configuration are included, how often backups run, how long they are retained, and whether a restore has been tested.
- Recovery: Ask who can initiate a restore, what the process is, and what recovery objectives or limitations the provider states.
- Staging: Confirm whether the plan includes a separate environment for testing WordPress, plugins, API behavior, and content changes.
- Deployments and logs: Check the available deployment controls and diagnostic logs for the frontend and backend.
- Support boundaries: Ask which team handles database, WordPress, API, build, delivery, and cross-provider incidents.
- Geography and limits: Check available locations, traffic and storage limits, API request limits, and what happens if included usage is exceeded.
Ask for the written service terms rather than inferring recovery or support coverage from a performance claim. For a multi-provider setup, record how an incident is handed from one provider to another and who coordinates the investigation.

The backend contains the WordPress installation and content database, while the frontend has its own application and deployment history; ask what is covered on each side rather than assuming one service protects the other. If recovery time matters to your team, ask the provider what recovery objectives it states and how a restore is requested and tested. Do not treat a backup feature label as proof that your complete site can be brought back in the state you need.
Estimate the full cost rather than comparing headline prices
The backend and frontend may be billed separately, and usage-based charges or overages can affect the total. Compare the complete operating cost for the expected architecture: WordPress hosting, frontend hosting, storage and media needs, traffic, builds or other usage, and any paid service required for the chosen workflow. Include the renewal price and the rules for exceeding included limits.
No comparable current host plans or prices are established here, so a provider ranking or numeric cost comparison would not be reliable. Check the current plan terms for the exact service you intend to use. Compare plans only after confirming that each covers the same responsibilities and supports the same API, cache, preview, backup, and support requirements.

Make the comparison on a like-for-like basis. A low headline price is not comparable if it excludes a required layer, has a different usage allowance, or leaves recovery and integration work to your team. Note the renewal price as well as any overage rules, traffic and storage limits, geographic choices, and usage included in each plan. Since plans and prices change, confirm those figures directly in current provider terms before choosing; the available evidence does not establish a universally cheapest option.

Use a shortlist process that exposes mismatches early
- Draw the architecture. List the WordPress backend, API, frontend framework, delivery layer, and any preview or cache component. Mark which parts you intend to operate yourself and which you expect a provider to cover.
- Write down requirements. Record the required WordPress, PHP, and database versions; REST or GraphQL choice; plugins; content types; preview workflow; media needs; and expected usage.
- Verify plan-level compatibility. Ask providers about the actual plan’s software baseline, HTTPS, endpoint and rewrite behavior, request limits, update policy, and plugin support.
- Walk through a publish cycle. Test a draft preview, publication, frontend update, cache invalidation, and media delivery with representative content.
- Review recovery and operations. Read backup, retention, restore, staging, deployment, logging, and support terms for every provider in the architecture.
- Calculate total cost and risk. Include included usage, overage rules, traffic and storage limits, geography, renewal pricing, and the effort needed to coordinate support across providers.
- Choose only after testing critical unknowns. If API rewrites, cache invalidation, preview, or a required plugin is uncertain, validate it in a trial or test environment before moving production content.
This process keeps a shortlist anchored to the site you are actually building. It also makes an apparent price or performance advantage less persuasive if a plan leaves a required integration or recovery responsibility unaccounted for.

- What staging, deployment controls, logs, traffic and storage limits, geographic options, and overage rules apply?
- Which team owns a problem that spans WordPress, the API, a frontend build, cache behavior, or delivery?
- What is the renewal and usage-based cost for the exact plan and expected workload?
Compare the written answers against the architecture and the test results, not against broad labels such as “managed,” “optimized,” or “unlimited.” A provider can be suitable for one layer without covering the operational work of the other.
When a split setup is a good fit
Separate backend and frontend hosting can make sense when the team wants a framework-based frontend while keeping WordPress for editing, or when frontend deployment and CMS operations need different workflows. The trade-off is that the team must account for the connection between the services: API access, publication updates, preview, cache behavior, and incident ownership.
A single provider may simplify billing or coordination if it genuinely supports all required components. Confirm the scope explicitly; do not assume that putting both layers under one provider makes them a single managed service. In either arrangement, test the real architecture with the plugins and content model before depending on it in production.

Do I need separate hosting for the WordPress backend and frontend?
Not always. WordPress and the frontend are separate responsibilities, and some providers may support more than one layer. Confirm which specific plan covers the WordPress runtime and database, frontend builds and delivery, previews, cache behavior, and support; do not assume one provider or invoice covers the whole system.

Can a headless site keep working if WordPress goes down?
A configured frontend may continue serving previously generated or cached pages during a WordPress outage. Vercel’s Next.js example describes this possibility with WPGraphQL and Incremental Static Regeneration, but it is not a blanket availability guarantee. The behavior depends on the frontend and cache configuration.
Should I use the REST API or WPGraphQL?
WordPress includes a REST API that returns JSON and applies visibility and authentication rules to private data. WPGraphQL is an option for a GraphQL frontend. Choose based on the integration you plan to operate, then test the endpoint, authentication, and content access on the proposed host. WPGraphQL requires WordPress 6.0 or higher, relies on URL rewriting for its /graphql endpoint, and recommends HTTPS in production.
Is any host with caching suitable for WPGraphQL Smart Cache?
Not necessarily. Smart Cache requires tag-based caching and invalidation and correct handling of the X-GraphQL-Keys response header. WPGraphQL notes that many hosts do not support this level of cache control, so verify the specific plan and test invalidation rather than relying on a generic caching claim.
What WordPress versions and server requirements should I check?
WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. It recommends Apache or Nginx while noting that other servers can work if they support PHP and MySQL. These recommendations can change, so check the current requirements page and the plan’s supported versions before choosing.
How should I compare the cost of headless WordPress hosting?
Compare the backend and frontend costs together, including storage and media, traffic, usage or overages, renewal pricing, and any service required for your workflow. Check current plan terms: current host plans and prices are not established here, so they do not establish comparable prices or a universally cheapest provider.
The Bottom Line
Choose hosting by validating the whole system, not by selecting the fastest-sounding WordPress plan. Confirm the backend baseline and API, then test preview, publishing, cache invalidation, recovery, and support across both layers. Compare current written plan terms and total usage cost, and do not commit until critical compatibility questions work with your actual content model and plugins.
