The best hiring platform for a remote engineering team depends on where its process breaks down: tracking applicants, nurturing passive candidates, finding engineers, or evaluating technical skills. Most teams need a connected stack rather than one product that does everything. Start with the workflow you need to improve, then verify that the applicant tracking system (ATS), recruiting CRM, sourcing tools, and assessment products exchange the information your team needs.
What should a remote engineering hiring platform do?
A hiring stack can include several distinct tools. An ATS organizes applicants, interview stages, feedback, and communications. A recruiting CRM helps teams build relationships with people who have not applied. Sourcing tools help recruiters find and contact passive candidates. Technical assessment and interview products help evaluate job-related skills.
Some products combine functions, but the categories are not interchangeable. A CRM does not necessarily replace an ATS, and an assessment platform does not solve sourcing or interviewer coordination by itself. Lever’s 2026 technical recruiting guide likewise frames technical hiring as a stack and says there is no single best tool for every team; that is vendor-authored guidance, not an independent market ranking.
Match the platform to the work you need to improve
| Hiring need | What to evaluate | Evidence-led example |
|---|---|---|
| Applicant tracking and structured interviews | Interview plans, scorecards, stage automation, candidate communications, and connections to assessment tools. | Greenhouse documents configurable interview plans and take-home stages, plus integrations for HackerRank and CodeSignal. |
| Candidate relationship management | Talent pools, candidate nurturing and re-engagement, and whether passive candidates and applicants can be managed in a shared workflow. | Lever describes its platform as combining an ATS and recruiting CRM. That is the vendor’s product positioning, not independently verified comparative performance. |
| Technical evaluation | Whether exercises reflect the role, candidate time burden, grading consistency, reporting, and integrity safeguards. | CodeSignal describes coding assessments, a coding environment, live technical interviews, and identity, proctoring, and plagiarism safeguards. |
| Technical sourcing | Reach into the communities relevant to your roles, outreach workflow, duplicate handling, and transfer of candidates into the ATS. | Lever’s 2026 guide treats specialist technical sourcing as a distinct category. Evaluate it against your actual sourcing channels and process. |
| Distributed team coordination | Scheduling across time zones, asynchronous completion, feedback visibility, permissions, and reliable handoffs between systems. | Greenhouse’s documented CodeSignal workflow shows how assessment status and links to submissions and results can appear in an ATS. Confirm scheduling and permissions in a vendor demonstration. |
| Cost and scale | Contract price, user and job limits, add-ons, implementation, integration costs, and expected hiring volume. | Comparable current prices and contract terms are not established in the product documentation covered here. Request written quotes for the complete stack. |

Greenhouse: ATS workflows and assessment handoffs
Greenhouse is worth considering when the priority is a structured recruiting process with assessment steps inside the interview plan. Its support documentation explains how to add a take-home test stage to a job’s interview plan, customize candidate instructions, set focus attributes, provide grader instructions, and assign graders. The cited article says this feature is available for new Core, Plus, and Pro subscription tiers.

Greenhouse also documents integrations for HackerRank and CodeSignal. These details establish relevant workflow options, not that Greenhouse is superior to other ATS products. Its homepage describes Voice AI as a structured, rubric-based first interview and reports that 90% of candidates rate the experience “excellent.” That is a Greenhouse claim; the homepage material reviewed does not state its sample or methodology.
Lever: ATS plus candidate CRM
Lever describes one platform for applicant tracking and candidate relationship management, with sourcing, applications, scheduling, collaboration, automation, analytics, and integrations. Its 2026 technical recruiting article positions Lever as an option for teams that want applicant tracking and candidate nurturing together. Because that comparison is published by Lever, treat its relative claims as vendor-authored and confirm the specific capabilities and integrations in your buying process.

For an ATS handoff, Greenhouse documents sending CodeSignal tests from an interview stage, seeing assessment status in Greenhouse, and opening links to candidate submissions and results. CodeSignal lists integrations with Ashby, Gem, Greenhouse, iCIMS, LinkedIn Talent Hub, and Lever. Verify availability, permissions, subscription requirements, and the exact workflow with both vendors before relying on an integration.
HackerRank: technical assessments connected to Greenhouse
Greenhouse’s integration documentation says HackerRank connects through the Greenhouse Harvest v3 API. Before sending a test, teams must configure the assessment integration and add a HackerRank Assessment stage to the job’s interview plan. The Greenhouse support documentation, updated June 24, 2026, describes HackerRank’s library as containing more than 3,000 challenges and covering more than 35 programming languages and technical domains; those catalog figures are vendor information reproduced in that documentation, not an independent evaluation of assessment quality.

How to compare platforms for remote hiring
Map your current process before choosing tools
Write down how candidates move from first contact to decision, including where each person and piece of feedback lives. Identify whether the main gap is applicant tracking, candidate nurture, sourcing, assessment, or coordination. If several are problems, define which system will own candidate records and which tools will send results back to it.
Check the integration as a real workflow
A listing that says two products integrate does not prove that the connection supports your process. Ask the vendors to demonstrate the exact path: creating or assigning an assessment, sending the candidate invitation, receiving status, viewing results, and preserving the relevant information in the ATS. Confirm which subscription tiers, permissions, and setup steps are required. For distributed teams, also test scheduling, time-zone handling, asynchronous completion, and feedback access for interviewers in different locations.

Make technical assessments relevant and consistent
Use exercises that measure competencies needed for the role rather than difficulty for its own sake. Greenhouse’s take-home guidance recommends involving a subject matter expert and supports defining focus attributes and grader instructions. Apply the same expectations across candidates, decide who grades each submission, and consider the time the exercise asks candidates to spend. Ask vendors what their integrity features do and what happens when a flag is raised; a feature description alone does not establish accuracy.
Compare total workflow cost, not feature counts
Ask for written quotes that cover the expected number of recruiters, hiring managers, open jobs, assessments, integrations, implementation, and any add-ons. Compare those costs with the workflow the tools would replace or improve. Current comparable prices, contract terms, and a best-fit company size are not established by the vendor materials summarized here, so there is no evidence-based universal price or size-based winner.
What the available evidence can and cannot tell you
The documented product features and integration steps can help narrow a shortlist by workflow. They do not establish which platform performs best across remote engineering teams, which product is most cost-effective, or which vendor suits a particular organization size. Greenhouse’s candidate rating and CodeSignal’s time and throughput figures are vendor claims; HackerRank’s catalog counts are vendor information reproduced in Greenhouse documentation. Treat them as claims to investigate, not as independently comparable results.
