AI in hearing care can help a device analyze sound and adjust how it processes it, but the label alone does not show that a product will make speech clear in every noisy place. The most useful question is what a particular feature does, who it is intended for, and what evidence supports it.

What AI does in hearing care

“AI” is a broad term, not a single hearing-aid feature. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration describes AI-enabled medical devices generally as systems that can analyze large or complex datasets, identify patterns, and generate information that may support diagnosis, treatment, or device usability. In a hearing aid, sound processing may use analysis of incoming audio to adapt how the device handles different acoustic conditions.

That general description does not establish how any particular product works or how much it will help an individual. A product’s AI label is not evidence that it reliably separates a speaker from background sound, restores normal hearing, or outperforms other devices. The FDA regulates medical devices, including AI-enabled devices, according to their intended use and technological characteristics; regulation and a marketing claim are not the same thing as proof of broad real-world benefit.

Why speech in noise is difficult

Restaurants, busy streets, and group conversations contain competing sounds, reverberation, and multiple voices. A hearing aid has to process the sound that reaches its microphones; it cannot always identify the voice a wearer wants to hear or remove every competing sound without affecting speech. Depending on the setting and the device, background noise may remain distracting or be amplified along with other sounds.

For that reason, ask about evidence for the exact device and feature, and whether it was tested in conditions like the ones that matter to you. A result from one product or a controlled test does not guarantee the same experience in a crowded room.

What the available evidence shows

An FDA-authorized self-fitting feature

In 2024, the FDA announced authorization of Apple’s Hearing Aid Feature software for compatible AirPods Pro used with an iOS device. The feature uses hearing levels accessed from HealthKit for customization. In the FDA-reported, multiple-site study, 118 participants with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss used the same device. Participants who self-fitted reported similar perceived benefit to those who received professional fitting; the FDA also reported comparable amplification and a measure of speech understanding in noise. No device-related adverse events were observed in that study.

Those findings are specific to the feature, device, study, and participants. “Similar” and “comparable” do not mean better, and the study does not establish that all AI hearing aids work equally well or that every user will get the same result.

A study of deep-learning noise reduction

A 2023 arXiv manuscript described a mobile deep-learning denoising system streamed to hearing aids. The study reported a 1.6 dB improvement in speech reception threshold and subjective ratings more than 40% higher on specified tests. Those are results reported for that system and those tests—not a general performance guarantee for AI hearing aids, and not a substitute for clinical advice.

Manufacturer claims need a different reading

In a 2023 press release, hearing-device manufacturer Starkey said its team had fitted more than 500 people over 18 months, collected feedback during 11,000 hours of in-field wear, and found a 10% improvement in speech intelligibility over its previous technology. These are company-reported figures and a company comparison, not independent evidence established by that announcement. They should not be treated as directly comparable to the FDA-reported study or the 2023 manuscript.

Questions still open

A 2024 National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders working-group summary identifies real-world outcomes, affordability, privacy, accessibility, the digital divide, and possible roles for AI outside the hearing aid as continuing research questions. In practice, who benefits, in which situations, and at what cost are still important considerations—not questions settled by the presence of AI in a product.

Choose a device intended for your needs

Hearing aids and personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) are not interchangeable categories. The FDA describes hearing aids as devices intended for people with hearing loss. PSAPs are consumer electronics intended to make sounds louder for people with normal hearing in particular activities; they are not medical devices like hearing aids.

Category Intended users How it is obtained
Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid Adults 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss Can be purchased in-store or online without a medical exam, prescription, or professional fitting. Self-fitting models may use tests, software, or smartphone apps.
Prescription hearing aid People whose hearing-care needs are assessed by a licensed professional; depending on indications, these may be appropriate for any degree of loss and any age Obtained through a licensed hearing-care professional, who can program it for an individual’s hearing loss.
PSAP People with normal hearing seeking louder sound for particular activities Consumer electronic product; not a medical hearing aid.

OTC hearing aids are not intended to treat severe or profound hearing loss. They may be convenient for adults with perceived mild to moderate loss, but someone who needs more support may benefit from professional assessment and fitting. FDA consumer guidance describes close to 30 million U.S. adults as having some degree of hearing loss; that population figure is not a measure of how many people are suitable for a particular product.

Check the fit, support, and terms before buying

Compare the details that affect your use, not just claims about “smart” processing:

  • Intended user and degree of loss: Check whether the product is a medical hearing aid or a PSAP, and whether it is intended for your needs.
  • Fitting and follow-up: Find out whether you will self-fit, have access to a licensed professional, or can get help adjusting settings after purchase.
  • Customization requirements: Check whether setup depends on a smartphone, a particular operating system, an app, or a remote. Compatibility can vary by product and software version.
  • Evidence for the specific feature: Look for the device tested, who took part, what outcome was measured, and whether the evidence comes from an independent study, a regulatory announcement, or the manufacturer.
  • Comfort and adjustment: A hearing aid can take practice to wear and use. Fit and program settings may need adjustment as you become accustomed to the device.
  • Return terms and warranty: Read the actual return policy and warranty before buying. FDA rules do not require OTC hearing-aid manufacturers to provide a warranty.

FDA guidance says OTC labeling should explain warnings, signs of mild-to-moderate hearing loss for which the device is intended, when to seek care, return policy, battery information, and whether a phone or remote is required. Treat phrases such as “FDA Registered” or “FDA Certified” cautiously: the FDA warns that such wording can mislead consumers. A registration or certification-sounding phrase is not, by itself, a finding that a device is effective for you.

Know when to get medical help

Do not rely on an OTC device to evaluate a concerning change in hearing. Seek medical evaluation for sudden hearing change, ear pain or discharge, vertigo, or hearing loss in one ear. These signs can call for care beyond self-fitting. If you try an OTC hearing aid and it does not provide enough benefit, consult a hearing-health professional. FDA guidance also recommends professional help for hearing questions.

Give adjustment time, then judge the result

Hearing aids do not restore normal hearing. They may improve communication in some settings, but unfamiliar sounds and background noise can take time to manage. FDA guidance notes that getting used to hearing aids takes time and practice, including learning to adjust fit and program settings. Evaluate whether the device is helping in the situations that matter to you, and seek fitting help if problems persist rather than assuming an AI feature will resolve them automatically.
