Choose drives in this order: identify the exact NAS model, verify its current 3.5-inch SATA compatibility list and firmware requirements, decide your RAID protection and usable-capacity target, then compare compatible drives by workload rating, speed, warranty, noise, power and price. There is no safe one-drive-fits-all answer without those details.

What hard drives do you need for a 4-bay NAS?

A four-bay enclosure normally accepts four 3.5-inch SATA hard drives, but physical fit alone does not establish compatibility. The NAS manufacturer may validate particular models, capacities, firmware revisions or sector formats. Start with the enclosure’s exact model number—not merely the brand or product family—and read its current HDD compatibility list.

Check the model-specific compatibility list first

Use the manufacturer’s support page to confirm the drive model, capacity, interface and any firmware restrictions. Synology recommends drives on its compatibility list and warns that unsupported drives can receive reduced support or affect performance. Its list is not a permanent guarantee: “Synology does not guarantee compatibility with listed products and reserves the right to update the list at any time.” A drive that worked in one four-bay model may therefore be unsuitable for another, even from the same manufacturer.

  • Record the complete NAS model, including a suffix such as “+” or a regional variant.
  • Check the list immediately before purchase; models and supported firmware can change.
  • Confirm that the list covers HDDs, not only SSD cache devices.
  • Check whether the NAS requires a particular drive firmware, sector format or installation procedure.
  • Verify that the enclosure’s trays and mounting system support standard 3.5-inch drives.

If the exact drive is absent, treat it as an unvalidated purchase. It may function, but you cannot assume the same support, health monitoring or performance behavior as a listed model.

Decide redundancy before choosing capacity

In a four-bay NAS, RAID changes both usable space and how many drive failures the volume can tolerate. Select the protection level first, then choose drive sizes that meet the resulting usable-capacity target. RAID is an availability feature, not a backup: it does not restore files deleted by mistake, protect against theft or fire, or provide an independent copy after corruption.

Common four-drive layouts

Layout Typical usable-capacity rule Typical disk-failure tolerance When it fits
Single-disk or spanning volume Close to the sum of installed disks, minus filesystem and system overhead Depends on the NAS implementation; a failed disk can make its data unavailable Only when redundancy is not required and backups are reliable
RAID 0 Close to the sum of all disks No disk-failure tolerance Scratch or replaceable data, not important files
RAID 1 or mirrored pairs Approximately the capacity of the smallest disk in each mirror, with the exact pool layout determined by the NAS Depends on which disks fail and how mirrors are arranged Small, highly available volumes where capacity is less important
RAID 5 Typically the equivalent of one disk used for parity, so about (number of disks − 1) times the smallest disk One disk More usable capacity with protection against one disk failure
RAID 6 Typically the equivalent of two disks used for parity, so about (number of disks − 2) times the smallest disk Two disks Higher protection when rebuild risk or drive size makes one-disk parity insufficient
RAID 10 Typically about half of the raw total, subject to mirror layout and the smallest disk At least one disk, and potentially more if failures are in different mirror pairs Random-input/output workloads that benefit from mirrored stripes

These capacity rules describe common implementations, not a promise about every NAS operating system. Minimum drive counts and available modes vary. For example, Seagate’s NAS OS 4 documentation lists at least three drives for RAID 5 and at least four for RAID 6 and RAID 10. Use your own NAS documentation as the authority.

RAID 5, RAID 6 or RAID 10?

RAID 5 leaves the most capacity among the usual protected four-drive layouts, but a second failure during a rebuild would exceed its protection. RAID 6 gives up another drive’s worth of capacity to tolerate two failures. RAID 10 sacrifices roughly half the raw capacity but can offer favorable random-workload behavior and shorter, simpler mirror rebuilds in some implementations. The right choice depends on the NAS software, drive size, workload and how much downtime or data unavailability you can accept.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer that RAID 6 is automatically available just because the chassis has four bays. Confirm the mode in the NAS vendor’s storage-pool documentation and follow its migration and rebuild guidance.

How many TB do you need in a 4-bay NAS?

Calculate from the usable space you need, not the sum printed on the drive labels. A four-drive RAID 5 set of equal-size disks typically exposes roughly three drives’ worth before overhead; RAID 6 exposes roughly two; RAID 10 exposes roughly half the raw total. If you mix capacities, many RAID implementations base the array on the smallest member, leaving part of larger disks unused until an expansion or a different layout is supported.

Allow for NAS and filesystem reservations

Synology’s RAID calculator estimates approximately 10 GB of system space per drive. It also reserves filesystem metadata: 4% for Btrfs or 2% for ext4 in the calculator accessed in 2026. Those figures are Synology calculator assumptions, not universal deductions for every NAS filesystem.

For a planning example, four 12 TB drives in a typical RAID 5 layout provide roughly 36 TB before the NAS’s system reservation, filesystem metadata, decimal-to-binary display conversion and any additional snapshot or volume-reserve settings. The actual figure must come from the calculator for your NAS, filesystem and RAID type.

Plan growth and replacement space

  • Estimate current data, annual growth and temporary working space for applications, surveillance, media processing or backups.
  • Leave headroom rather than planning to fill the volume completely; many NAS features need free space for snapshots, updates and rebuild operations.
  • Check whether the NAS supports replacing disks with larger ones one at a time and expanding the pool afterward.
  • Confirm the maximum supported disk capacity and volume size for your exact model.

Choose the smallest drive size that meets the calculated usable target only if future expansion is straightforward. Otherwise, paying for larger compatible disks now may be less disruptive than replacing all members later.

Compare compatible drives on more than TB

Once the NAS model, RAID level and capacity target are fixed, compare the exact compatible drive models. A higher advertised capacity or rotational speed does not automatically make a drive better for a home or small-office NAS.

Workload rating and drive class

Workload rating describes the manufacturer’s stated annual data written and read under its defined conditions. It is a useful way to match a drive tier to sustained activity, but it is not an independent durability guarantee.

Synology drive category Published workload rating Published warranty How to interpret it
Plus Series SATA HDD 180 TB per year of data write/read 3 years A NAS-oriented tier for systems and workloads Synology associates with the Plus line
Enterprise Series SATA HDD 550 TB per year of data write/read 5 years A higher-duty tier for systems and workloads Synology associates with the Enterprise line

These are Synology’s published 2025 figures for its own categories, not universal industry thresholds or a controlled cross-brand test. Use the candidate manufacturer’s definition and warranty terms when comparing another brand. For light file sharing and media storage, an enterprise tier may add cost, noise and power without a benefit you can use. For virtualization, databases, frequent surveillance writes or many simultaneous users, a higher workload class may be easier to justify.

Rotational speed and sustained performance

Rotational speed affects latency and sequential throughput, but it also tends to influence acoustics and power draw. Compare the exact model’s published speed, cache and sustained-transfer specifications rather than assuming that the highest RPM is best. NAS performance can be limited by network speed, the NAS CPU, RAID parity work, concurrent users or application behavior long before the disk reaches its headline interface rate.

Noise and vibration

Four mechanical drives in a small room can be noticeably louder than one desktop disk. Read the datasheet’s idle, seek or operating-noise figures where provided, and check whether the NAS chassis has vibration isolation. A quieter model may be preferable in a bedroom or office even if its peak performance is lower. The available evidence does not establish a reliable cross-brand acoustic ranking, so compare like-for-like manufacturer measurements instead of treating a category name as a noise guarantee.

Power and thermals

Review startup, idle and operating power for the exact capacity and model. Four drives draw more during spin-up than during steady operation; confirm that the NAS power supply and any UPS can handle the load. Higher temperature can shorten the margin for error, so verify the NAS fan profile, drive spacing and room temperature. No universal power ranking is established here, and ratings measured under different conditions are not directly interchangeable.

Warranty and service terms

Warranty length is only one part of the service decision. Check the period, replacement process, shipping responsibilities, regional coverage and whether the warranty applies to the workload and environment you intend. The Synology examples above show three years for Plus Series SATA HDDs and five years for Enterprise Series SATA HDDs; those terms should not be generalized to every vendor or capacity.

Price and total cost

Compare current local prices for the same usable-capacity goal, not just the lowest price per raw terabyte. Include the cost of a replacement disk, a UPS, backup storage and any extended warranty. Prices and inventory vary by country and date, and no stable cross-brand price ranking is established. A cheaper disk that is not on the NAS list can cost more if it causes support limitations or forces a later replacement.

Can you mix different hard drives in a NAS?

There is no universal mix-and-match rule. Some NAS platforms and RAID implementations accept different brands, capacities or models; others restrict supported combinations or reduce support for unlisted drives. Follow the NAS maker’s guidance for the exact model and chosen storage-pool type.

What mixing changes

  • The usable array size is commonly constrained by the smallest member, so a larger disk may contribute only part of its capacity.
  • Different rotational speeds and cache behavior can make performance less predictable.
  • Acoustic output, vibration and power draw can vary between bays.
  • Different firmware behavior, error-recovery timing or health-reporting features can complicate troubleshooting.
  • A later replacement must remain compatible with the pool, not merely match the old disk’s advertised capacity.

Identical models simplify installation, predictable capacity, spare-disk planning and vendor support. Mixing can be reasonable when the NAS explicitly supports it, when matching drives are unavailable, or when you are expanding an existing pool under documented rules. Record each model and firmware revision so a future replacement can be chosen deliberately.

A practical selection procedure

  1. Identify the enclosure. Write down the manufacturer, exact model, firmware version and number of available bays.
  2. Read the current HDD compatibility list. Filter for 3.5-inch SATA NAS hard drives and verify each candidate’s capacity, model number and any firmware or support notes.
  3. Check storage-pool limits. Confirm supported RAID levels, minimum disk counts, maximum disk size, volume limits and whether expansion or migration is supported.
  4. Set the protection target. Decide whether the volume must survive one disk failure, two failures or a mirror-pair failure pattern, and account for rebuild downtime.
  5. Calculate usable capacity. Use the NAS vendor’s calculator with the planned RAID, filesystem, disk sizes, snapshots and reserved space. Include system and metadata reservations; Synology’s calculator, for example, uses approximately 10 GB per drive and metadata reserves of 4% for Btrfs or 2% for ext4.
  6. Match the workload class. Compare the candidate workload rating with your annual writes, surveillance workload, virtual machines, databases, media use and number of users.
  7. Compare operating characteristics. Check rotational speed, noise, power, temperature limits, warranty and service terms for the exact model.
  8. Compare current prices. Price the full set of drives plus a compatible spare and an independent backup target, using your region’s current listings.
  9. Choose a consistent set where practical. Identical models make capacity and replacement behavior easier to predict, provided they are listed for your NAS.
  10. Plan the backup before installation. Keep important data on a separate system or location and test restoring files; RAID alone is not that copy.

Installation and replacement pitfalls

Buying by bay count alone

“Four-bay” describes the number of physical slots, not every supported disk. A drive can fit and still be absent from the compatibility list, exceed the model’s capacity limit or require firmware the NAS does not support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using raw capacity as the promise

Drive labels show decimal terabytes, while operating systems often display a smaller binary value. RAID parity, system space, filesystem metadata, snapshots and reserved space reduce the volume further. Quote the calculator’s usable result when deciding whether a pool is large enough.

Assuming RAID protects every failure

RAID does not protect against accidental deletion, malware, a failed NAS motherboard, theft, fire or an administrator mistake. Maintain an independent backup with versioning where appropriate, and periodically verify that it can be restored.

Replacing with a merely equal label

Check the NAS’s replacement rule and the drive’s exact usable capacity. A nominally equal disk can have slightly different capacity or sector behavior and be rejected. Prefer a listed model with capacity at least as large as the member being replaced, then follow the NAS’s rebuild procedure.

Ignoring rebuild conditions

During a rebuild, the remaining disks are heavily active and the volume may have reduced performance or protection. Ensure ventilation, stable power and a current backup before starting. Do not remove another disk or interrupt a rebuild unless the NAS documentation specifically instructs you to do so.

How to make the final choice

For a quiet home NAS used mainly for documents and media, prioritize a listed NAS-oriented drive, adequate usable capacity, acceptable acoustics and a workload rating that matches the actual writes; the highest RPM or enterprise tier is not automatically worthwhile. For a small office with heavier concurrent access, surveillance or virtual machines, give more weight to workload rating, warranty, sustained performance and predictable replacement availability. In every case, the exact NAS compatibility entry and the vendor’s calculator outrank a generic “best NAS hard drive” list.

The best purchase is therefore a compatible set sized for your selected RAID level, with operating characteristics that fit the room and workload, a price you can sustain for replacements, and a separate backup strategy.
