Start with your laptop’s exact GPU power configuration and display, not the RTX 5070 name alone. Set the game to the panel’s native resolution, choose a frame-rate target that suits the game, then adjust graphics quality until performance is stable. The panel’s maximum refresh rate may also depend on the laptop’s GPU mode.
Why the RTX 5070 name does not tell the whole story
NVIDIA lists the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU with 50–100 W of GPU subsystem power. Its published specifications also include 8 GB of GDDR7 memory, a 128-bit memory interface, 384 GB/s memory bandwidth, 4,608 CUDA cores, and a listed boost-clock range of 1,425–2,347 MHz. These are vendor specifications, not gaming benchmark results; laptop implementation and workload affect observed performance. NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 50 Series laptop specifications are a useful reference, but your laptop maker’s exact configuration is the more relevant starting point.
Before changing settings—or comparing laptop models—confirm the exact SKU and check its GPU power configuration, panel resolution and refresh rate, display type, GPU-routing features, and ports. A shared product-family name does not guarantee the same screen or operating modes.

A model-specific 240 Hz to 300 Hz example
ASUS lists the ROG Strix G16 (2026) G615 with a 2560 × 1600, 300 Hz panel and 115 W ROG Boost. Its specifications say: “Default refresh rate is 240Hz in Standard, Eco, and Optimized GPU mode. To enable 300Hz, open Armoury Crate and set the the GPU mode to Ultimate.” This is an instruction for that listed model, not a universal setting path for RTX 5070 laptops. See ASUS’s ROG Strix G16 (2026) G615 specifications.
Different RTX 5070 laptops can have different screens
For contrast, ASUS lists the ROG Zephyrus G16 (2025) GU605 with a 2560 × 1600 OLED display running at 240 Hz and 105 W ROG Boost. The Strix example is described as IPS-level and supports up to 300 Hz under its specified GPU mode. These are distinct configurations, not a universal comparison of RTX 5070 laptop panels. Set up the display and game in a practical order
- Identify your exact laptop and panel. Check the manufacturer’s specification page or system utility for the SKU, native resolution, maximum refresh rate, and any mode requirements.
- Choose the laptop’s GPU or performance mode. Use the maker’s instructions for your specific model. Modes can affect power and fan behavior as well as the refresh rates the system exposes; names and controls vary by manufacturer.
- Select an available refresh rate. In the operating system’s display settings or the laptop maker’s utility, choose the highest rate the panel and current GPU mode offer if smooth motion is your priority. If the expected rate is missing, check the model’s documentation for a GPU-mode requirement or restart instruction before assuming the panel cannot support it.
- Begin at native resolution in the game. This is a sensible starting point for a clear image. Set a frame-rate target that makes sense for the particular game; do not assume every title will reach the screen’s maximum refresh rate.
- Adjust graphics quality to meet that target. If performance is below your target, reduce demanding graphics settings. You can also try a DLSS option supported by the game. NVIDIA lists DLSS 4 support for the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU, but game support and image-quality tradeoffs vary. No fixed frame-rate gain can be assumed.
- Check adaptive sync and GPU routing. Verify whether your exact laptop and display support G-SYNC or another adaptive-sync feature. If the model includes a MUX switch or NVIDIA Advanced Optimus, follow the maker’s instructions for configuring it; those features are not established for every RTX 5070 laptop.
Check connections before using an external monitor
Do not assume every laptop port connects to the discrete GPU or supports the monitor’s desired resolution and refresh rate. Check the port path, supported display modes, cable requirements, and sync compatibility for the exact laptop and monitor before buying or connecting equipment.

Choose settings around the game you play
There is no single best balance for every game. A fast-paced game may make high refresh and a steady frame rate your priority; another game may lead you to favor image quality at a lower target. Use the same game and comparable settings when evaluating changes, and adjust one demanding option at a time so you can see its effect on your own system.
For prospective buyers, compare the complete configuration rather than the GPU label alone:
