Start with games you already own or can access through a service you already use. Filter by platform, edition and budget first; then match the remaining choices to the time you have, the mood you want and whether you will play alone or with others. Build a shortlist of three games, watch a little unedited gameplay if needed, and pick the one whose moment-to-moment play looks appealing. There is no single best “waiting game” for everyone.

A five-minute method for choosing your next game

When a release date slips, an enormous backlog can make the wait feel like another chore. Use this order instead:

  1. Apply hard limits: keep only games that run on your current console, PC or handheld and that you can legally access within your budget.
  2. Describe the time available: decide whether you need ten-minute sessions, hour-long sessions, or a game you can finish in a few evenings.
  3. Name the feeling: choose relaxing, funny, difficult, story-focused, creative, tense or social rather than relying on a broad genre label.
  4. Choose the social format: solo, local co-op, online co-op or competitive multiplayer.
  5. Limit the shortlist to three: compare those three on session structure and immediate appeal, then start one.

This order prevents a common mistake: falling in love with a recommendation that is unavailable on your hardware or requires a purchase you did not plan to make.

Filter for platform, access and cost before taste

Confirm the exact hardware

Check the current storefront page for your specific platform. A title may have separate console, PC and handheld editions, different save support, or no version for your device at all. Do not infer compatibility from a trailer or from a similarly named edition. If you are choosing for another person, ask which hardware they actually use rather than assuming they own the latest model.

Search what you already have

Review your installed games, digital library, physical shelf and wishlist before shopping. A game you own but never started has no acquisition cost and can be launched immediately. If you use a subscription catalog, search that catalog while signed in; membership tiers and regional libraries can differ. The fact that a game appeared in a catalog guide does not guarantee that it remains included.

Treat a purchase as a gap-filler

Buy only when your existing library cannot supply the structure or mood you want. Before paying, verify the edition, supported platform, language or accessibility features that matter to you, and whether the listed price is recurring, promotional or a one-time purchase. A recommendation should identify the specific edition, not simply the franchise name.

Keep ownership separate from enthusiasm

Separate “I want to play this” from “I need to buy this now.” Put attractive but nonessential games on a wishlist and set a reminder to check them after the delayed release arrives. This keeps the waiting period from turning into an accidental pile of unfinished purchases.

Match the game to the shape of the wait

For an unknown or repeatedly moving date

Choose games with natural stopping points: individual missions, levels, puzzles, runs or chapters. You can stop after a satisfying unit without losing the thread. Avoid a title whose enjoyment depends on remembering a large web of quests if you expect to play only once every few weeks.

For a short, predictable wait

A contained game with a clear ending can provide a clean bridge. Look for a campaign that fits the calendar you actually have, not an advertised completion time that assumes a particular skill level or ignores optional content. Finishing one focused game often feels better than starting a huge one and abandoning it when the delayed release launches.

For long evenings or an indefinite delay

A longer game can work when it offers reliable chapter breaks, repeatable activities or a flexible save system. Total campaign length and session flexibility are different measurements: a ten-hour game may demand long uninterrupted sessions, while a much larger game may let you complete a mission in fifteen minutes.

For very short sessions

Prefer games that save at the end of a round, puzzle or mission. Check whether the game pauses safely, how often it autosaves and whether returning after a week requires a tutorial recap. A title can be short overall yet inconvenient if each session begins with a lengthy setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a mood, not just a genre

Genre labels hide the experience you will have on a particular night. Write one sentence such as “I want something calm and tactile,” “I need a demanding challenge,” or “I want a funny story I can share with a friend.” Then inspect how each candidate creates that feeling.

  • Relaxing: low-pressure exploration, decorating, gentle puzzles or activities without strict timers.
  • Challenging: precise combat, escalating puzzles, difficult missions or systems that reward practice.
  • Story-rich: a clear narrative delivered in chapters or scenes that are easy to resume.
  • Creative: building, arranging, experimenting or solving problems with several valid approaches.
  • Playful: comic writing, unusual mechanics or short scenarios that deliver a joke or surprise quickly.
  • Social: a game whose required coordination and pace fit the people who will actually join.

Use reviews and descriptions to identify the dominant activity, but confirm it with footage. A game marketed as an adventure may spend most of its time on inventory management, stealth or dialogue; those details determine whether it suits tonight’s energy.

Decide how you want to play with other people

Solo

Solo games are easiest to fit around an uncertain schedule because progress does not depend on anyone else being online. Check whether the game records multiple saves if more than one person uses the device.

Local co-op

Confirm the number of local players, controller requirements and whether the mode is available from the opening menu or unlocked later. A game can support two players but still require two particular controllers or a single-screen style that your group may not enjoy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Online co-op

Match the game’s session length and communication demands to your group. A mission-based structure is easier to schedule than a campaign that penalizes anyone who leaves early. Check whether cross-play, voice chat and the necessary online membership apply to your platforms.

Competitive multiplayer

Competition can fill a wait indefinitely, but it also brings matchmaking times, ranking pressure and a changing player population. Choose it when you actively want that intensity, not merely because it is available for free.

Distinguish a short complete game from repeatable short runs

These formats solve different problems:

  • Short and complete: a beginning, middle and ending delivered in a compact campaign. It is ideal when you want closure before the delayed release arrives.
  • Repeatable runs or missions: each attempt is self-contained, while upgrades, discoveries or higher difficulty provide reasons to return. It suits an uncertain wait because you can stop after one run.
  • Long, chapter-based games: substantial content divided into meaningful sections. It works when you want a larger commitment but can reliably return to the story.

Ask two separate questions: “How long until the credits?” and “How long is a satisfying session?” A game can score well on one and poorly on the other.

Build and test a three-game shortlist

  1. Write down the constraints: platform, ownership or subscription access, maximum spend, available session length and whether you need solo or multiplayer.
  2. Write the desired feeling: use one or two adjectives plus the activity you want, such as “quiet decorating” or “fast missions.”
  3. Pick three candidates: choose different structures when possible—one contained game, one repeatable option and one longer or social alternative.
  4. Check the store page: verify the current edition, platform, catalog status, save requirements and any online access requirement.
  5. Watch unedited gameplay: view five to ten minutes that show ordinary play, menus and a typical mission rather than only a cinematic trailer. Stop if the controls, camera or pace already irritate you.
  6. Choose a starting rule: begin the candidate whose first session sounds most appealing. If it has not earned a second session after its introductory section, move to the next candidate without guilt.

Three options are enough to avoid paralysis while preserving a meaningful choice. Comparing an entire backlog produces more tabs, not better information.

Examples of different fits

The following titles illustrate structures rather than a universal ranking. Check the current platform, local storefront and access terms before recommending or buying any of them.

Game What it illustrates Session shape Access note
A Short Hike Peaceful exploration with a contained goal Explore, climb and discover at your own pace; Nintendo placed it in a roundup of games it said could be completed in eight hours or less Confirm the edition for the reader’s hardware
Unpacking Quiet puzzle and home decoration with story revealed through objects Individual rooms and moves provide natural stopping points Confirm current platform and storefront availability
Donut County Light, comic puzzle play Short stages built around a simple central mechanic Confirm current platform and edition
Blue Prince Repeatable runs with discoveries that can extend a play session Changing manor layouts let a run end after puzzles or clues, while deeper mysteries invite longer engagement PlayStation described it as a PS5 PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title in a January 2026 guide; membership and catalog access can change
Earth Defense Force 5 Mission-based action for brief bursts PlayStation describes more than 100 missions, each playable in a few minutes The cited catalog listing covers PS5/PS4; verify current access
While Waiting A deliberately thematic puzzle about waiting itself Doing nothing is part of the strategy Nintendo lists it for Switch with a February 5, 2025 release; it is an adjacent example, not a general answer for every long delay

A Short Hike: a compact exploratory bridge

Nintendo describes hiking, climbing and discovering a mountain landscape. That makes it a useful model for a player who wants gentle movement and a clear sense of place rather than an endless progression system. Nintendo’s February 28, 2022 roundup included it among games it said could be completed in eight hours or less. That is the roundup’s selection criterion, not a promise that every player will finish in that time; exploration style and optional activities change the result.

Unpacking: quiet progress without combat

Nintendo describes Unpacking as a block-fitting puzzle and home-decoration game whose story unfolds across eight house moves. Each move naturally divides play, so it can suit someone who wants visible progress in short sessions and prefers arranging objects to fighting enemies. Check the local listing before assuming the same edition is available on every device.

Donut County: a playful, low-commitment option

Nintendo describes a comic puzzle game in which a raccoon uses a remote-controlled hole. The simple premise makes it a candidate when you want quick, humorous stages rather than a heavy narrative. Its presence in the same Nintendo short-game roundup gives it a contained profile, but individual completion times still vary.

Blue Prince: flexible runs for an uncertain schedule

PlayStation describes short runs through a changing manor. A session can end after solving a puzzle or collecting a clue, while deeper mysteries can keep you playing longer. That combination demonstrates why repeatable structure is valuable during an unpredictable delay: you get a meaningful stopping point without exhausting the game immediately. The cited PlayStation page identified it as a PS5 PlayStation Plus Game Catalog title at publication; check your region, membership tier and current catalog before relying on that access.

Earth Defense Force 5: missions measured in minutes

PlayStation says the game contains more than 100 missions and that each can be enjoyed in a few minutes. It illustrates a strong fit for a player who wants action in discrete units rather than a continuous campaign. The cited listing covers PS5 and PS4, but catalog inclusion and edition details should be verified at the time of play.

While Waiting: a thematic curiosity

Nintendo lists While Waiting as a Switch puzzle game released February 5, 2025, with “doing nothing” as part of the strategy. Optillusion founder Dong Zhou described the inspiration this way: “We want to create a game from every mundane moment, to help players find their own ways to kill time.” The concept is relevant because it turns waiting into the subject of play, but it should not be treated as the default recommendation for a player seeking a broad substitute for a delayed release.

What release-delay statistics can—and cannot—tell you

Delays are common enough that planning a temporary game is rational, but statistics do not forecast a particular title. An empirical study of 23,485 Steam games reported that 48% of the studied games had a delayed initial release. Among delayed games, the median delay was 14 days. The authors also reported similar delay percentages across genres, ranging from 48% to 52%.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures describe that study’s Steam dataset and its definition of an initial release. They do not predict whether a named forthcoming game will slip again, how long its next delay will be, or whether a console launch will move by the same amount. Use the numbers to justify a flexible plan, not to calculate a release date.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Choosing by total hours alone

Symptom: you select the shortest listed campaign but each session feels awkward. Fix: check save frequency, chapter breaks and the time needed to reach the next meaningful decision.

Starting a huge game to “fill the gap”

Symptom: the delayed release arrives while you are still in the tutorial, and the temporary game becomes another obligation. Fix: choose a stopping point in advance—one ending, a fixed number of missions or a limited number of runs.

Buying before checking access

Symptom: the game is unavailable on your device, locked behind a different edition or no longer in the catalog you saw mentioned. Fix: open the current regional store page while signed in, confirm the platform and edition, and treat catalog access as changeable.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Confusing a trailer with ordinary play

Symptom: the game looks exciting in marketing but tires you within minutes. Fix: watch unedited footage showing a normal loop, then use a refund policy where applicable and where you meet its conditions.

Ignoring the people you planned to play with

Symptom: the game is excellent solo but your group cannot align schedules or required hardware. Fix: verify player count, cross-play, communication needs and mission duration before committing the group.

Letting the backlog decide for you

Symptom: you keep browsing and never launch anything. Fix: write three names on paper, rank them by immediate appeal, and start the first for one session. Reassess only after playing, not after reading another list.

A reusable decision worksheet

  • Hardware: Which exact console, PC configuration or handheld will run it?
  • Access: Do I own it, have catalog access now, or need to buy it?
  • Budget: What is my maximum one-time spend, and is the price promotional?
  • Wait: Is the release date firm, uncertain or repeatedly moving?
  • Session: How many minutes can I play on an ordinary night?
  • Mood: What feeling and activity do I want today?
  • Social mode: Solo, local co-op, online co-op or competitive?
  • Commitment: Do I want a complete ending, repeatable runs or a long chapter-based game?
  • Stopping point: Where can I save or end a session without frustration?
  • Reality check: Does ordinary gameplay—not only the trailer—look enjoyable?

The practical verdict

The safest choice during a long, uncertain delay is usually an accessible game with a session structure that matches your available time. Start with your own library or an existing catalog, enforce platform and budget limits, then choose among three candidates by mood and moment-to-moment play. A contained game offers closure; repeatable missions or runs offer flexibility; a longer chaptered game works when you genuinely want a larger commitment. Recheck platform, edition and catalog status immediately before purchase or download, because those details—and the delayed release itself—can change.
