Three useful places to start are a browser, a notes app, and an office suite: Firefox, Joplin, and LibreOffice are all named in a free and open-source software directory. They are candidates, not guaranteed one-for-one replacements. Check that each supports your device and the specific tasks, files, and services you rely on before switching.
How to choose a replacement that fits
“Free and open-source” describes a software model, not a promise that an app matches every feature of a proprietary default. A practical replacement needs to work on your device and support your ordinary workflow. The curated FOSS alternatives directory lists options in browser, notes, and office categories, including the three below.
- Check device support: Confirm the project offers a version for your operating system or device.
- Trace your data: Find out whether you can import existing information, export it in a usable format, and access it offline if needed.
- Test the real task: Use a representative website, note, or document before relying on a new app for important work.
- Use an official distribution route: Check the project’s own documentation for current downloads, updates, and licensing details.
Three apps to consider
Firefox for browsing
Firefox is listed as a browser option in the FOSS directory. It may be worth considering if your goal is to replace a browser default, but the directory alone does not establish which operating systems are currently supported, how it will behave with your essential sites, or whether it fits your privacy and compatibility requirements. Check Mozilla’s official documentation for those specifics before switching.
Joplin for notes
Joplin appears in the directory’s notes category. Before moving notes into it, verify its current platform support, sync choices, and export options against your needs in the project’s official documentation. In particular, decide whether you need synchronization across devices or primarily local, offline access, and confirm that you can retrieve your notes in a format you can use elsewhere.

LibreOffice for office work
LibreOffice is listed as an office-suite alternative. Whether it can replace your current suite depends on the files and collaboration workflows you use. Identify the formats you regularly open and share, then test representative documents—including layouts, formulas, and any features colleagues depend on. Do not assume compatibility is perfect; confirm supported formats and limitations in current official documentation.
What about Android phone defaults?
If you are looking to replace built-in phone utilities rather than desktop apps, the Fossify Android apps directory covers categories including photos, calendars, files, documents, messaging, calls, music, notes, and camera. Treat it as a place to find candidates, not as proof that every app matches a device’s built-in features or is available and maintained for your particular phone. A low-risk way to switch
- Pick one default to replace. Start with the browser, notes, office, or phone utility you most want to change rather than moving everything at once.
- List your must-haves. Note the devices involved, important files or services, collaboration needs, and whether sync or offline access matters.
- Verify the project details. Consult official documentation for current platforms, licensing, updates, import and export paths, and relevant limitations.
- Try a representative task. Open a typical document, use your essential sites, or create and retrieve a sample note before making the app your default.
- Keep a recovery path. Export or back up important data before migrating, and retain access to the old app until you know the new workflow works.
