Choose the network adapter and Ethernet switch as one platform-specific design, not as separate purchases. Start with the GPU/server platform and its validated reference architecture, then select the supported NIC family, plane count, switch capacity, optics or copper links, and software release. A fast adapter connected to an unvalidated or physically mismatched fabric can leave an otherwise capable cluster unsupported.
NVIDIA describes Spectrum-X as an Ethernet platform combining Spectrum switches with BlueField-3 SuperNIC, ConnectX-7 NIC and ConnectX-8 SuperNIC families for lossless RoCE traffic on the GPU-to-GPU east-west network. The current architecture documentation, updated September 9, 2026, lists Spectrum-X RA 2.3 with Network Operator 26.7.x at a GA support level. Use that documentation as the compatibility boundary, then confirm every hardware SKU with the system vendor or integrator before ordering.
What you are actually choosing
An AI-cluster fabric carries east-west traffic between GPU servers. The design must keep the adapter, switch family, topology, RoCE configuration and physical links within a reference architecture that matches the server platform. This is different from choosing a general office switch by advertised port speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe practical decision has five parts:
- Platform: the exact GPU baseboard or server design, such as HGX H100, H200, B200, GB200, B300 or GB300.
- Adapter: the NIC or SuperNIC family that the platform documentation names for the intended deployment.
- Topology: single-plane, dual-plane or quad-plane, with the required plane load-balancing mode.
- Switch and links: the Spectrum switch SKU, port count and rate, connector or breakout arrangement, transceivers or direct-attach cables, media and reach.
- Software: the Network Operator release, reference-architecture profile and host capabilities required to bring the fabric up.
No single “fastest” adapter or universal switch bill of materials is established by the cited documentation. Port density, optical modules, cable lengths and uplinks depend on the actual server count, NIC port layout and physical distance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Start with the validated GPU and server platform
Record the platform before comparing adapters. NVIDIA’s reference-architecture pages map specific NIC families and plane arrangements to named systems; those mappings are more useful than a card’s headline bandwidth when supportability matters.
| GPU/server platform in the documented examples | Documented adapter family | Topology described | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|---|
| HGX H100 | BlueField-3 | Single-plane | Use BlueField-3 as the starting point for the named single-plane design, then verify the exact server implementation. |
| HGX H200 | BlueField-3 | Single-plane | Confirm the host’s validated BlueField-3 configuration and required port arrangement. |
| HGX B200 | BlueField-3 | Single-plane | Do not substitute another family solely because it has a newer product number. |
| GB200 | ConnectX-7 | Single-plane | Follow the GB200 solution stack; the documentation also permits ConnectX-8 in single-plane mode. |
| B300 | ConnectX-8 | Multiplane examples | Use the B300 deployment guidance to determine whether the build is dual-plane or quad-plane. |
| GB300 | ConnectX-8 | Multiplane examples | Use ConnectX-8 and the platform’s specified plane and load-balancing settings. |
These are architecture mappings, not independent throughput tests. The documentation describes Ethernet scaling from thousands to hundreds of thousands of GPUs in a flat, two-tier topology; treat that as NVIDIA’s platform description rather than as a measured benchmark.
Capture the inputs that control the design
- GPU platform, server model and system vendor.
- Number of adapter ports per host and the intended host interface.
- Number of hosts in the initial cluster and the expected expansion size.
- Whether the workload needs one network plane or multiple independent planes.
- Network Operator and reference-architecture release.
- Distance between racks or rows, which determines media and reach.
Ask the platform supplier for the solution-stack document that names the supported adapter, switch software and physical interconnects. A generic NIC data sheet cannot replace that validation.

Choose single-plane, dual-plane or quad-plane topology
A plane is an independent network path used by the platform’s traffic-management design. The cited Spectrum-X Kubernetes quick start documents single-plane operation and multiplane configurations. In the documented multiplane example, dual-plane uses two planes and quad-plane uses four. Those numbers are configuration counts, not performance results.
Single-plane
Single-plane is the simplest design: each host participates in one fabric plane. It generally reduces switch and cable count, but the platform guide must explicitly support that arrangement. The examples associate single-plane operation with BlueField-3 on HGX H100/H200/B200 and ConnectX-7 on GB200; ConnectX-8 is also permitted in single-plane mode in the cited guidance.

Dual-plane
Dual-plane requires two separately identified paths per participating host and the corresponding switch ports and links. Confirm that the server has the required number of usable NIC ports and that the switch design provides the same plane separation. The quick start specifies two planes for its dual-plane configuration.
Quad-plane
Quad-plane uses four paths and therefore multiplies the port, transceiver and cabling checks. The quick start specifies four planes for its quad-plane configuration. Do not infer that four planes automatically deliver a particular speedup; the documentation supplies a topology setting, not a benchmark.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Hardware versus software plane load balancing
For the cited B300 and GB300 multiplane configurations, ConnectX-8 supports hardware plane load balancing (hwplb) and software plane load balancing (swplb). NVIDIA describes hardware multiplane as the recommended mode on multiplane platforms. Compare the two only after checking the platform and release constraints.
The NIC configuration documentation restricts hwplb to ConnectX-8 or ConnectX-9. ConnectX-9 Spectrum-X use is identified as Tech Preview and is not covered by RA 2.3 validation, so it should not be presented as an RA-validated replacement for ConnectX-8.
Select the adapter with software support in mind
Adapter selection is partly a software decision. A card can support Ethernet or RoCE in general and still be outside the validated Spectrum-X combination for a particular platform.

| ConnectX-7 NIC | Named for the GB200 single-plane example. | Use the GB200-specific validated configuration rather than a generic ConnectX-7 build. |
| ConnectX-8 SuperNIC | Named for B300 and GB300 multiplane examples; also permitted for GB200 single-plane in the cited guidance. | Check plane count, load-balancing mode, host interface and the exact system SKU. |

Confirm host interface and port behavior
Match the adapter’s physical host interface to the server’s available slot, riser and bus arrangement. Also confirm whether the intended fabric uses one port per host, multiple ports, or a breakout mode. The switch-side connector and transceiver must support the same signaling and lane arrangement.

For the Network Operator 26.7 configuration described in the documentation, the NIC configuration requires Ethernet link type and one virtual function:
linkType: EthernetnumVfs: 1
Network Operator 26.7 no longer relies on the earlier built-in reference-architecture tuning behavior. Supply the appropriate profile ConfigMap and reference it by name in the operator configuration. The profile must match the selected architecture; copying a profile from another platform can produce an unsupported combination even when the YAML is syntactically valid.
Size the switch fabric from the real port map
NVIDIA identifies Spectrum switches as the switch family in the Spectrum-X platform description, but the cited architecture material does not name one universal switch SKU. Select the model only after the server and plane map are fixed.
Build a port inventory
- Count the active network ports required on every host.
- Multiply that count by the number of hosts in the first deployment phase.
- Add ports for planned expansion instead of assuming a second switch will be easy to insert later.
- Reserve the ports required for inter-switch links or uplinks in the documented topology.
- Separate ports by plane when the architecture calls for dual-plane or quad-plane operation.
- Check whether a port is used as a native single link or as a breakout group; a nominal port count can otherwise overstate usable connections.
Keep the inventory in a rack-level spreadsheet that records host, adapter port, plane, switch, switch port and cable identifier. This makes a replacement or a failed link traceable without changing the logical design.

Verify the switch specification before purchase
| Item to verify | Why it matters | Evidence required |
|---|---|---|
| Exact switch SKU | Port speeds, connector types, software support and power can differ within a family. | Platform solution stack or written integrator confirmation. |
| Downlink and uplink count | The switch must accommodate every host port, plane and inter-switch connection. | Port map for the planned and expanded cluster. |
| Per-port signaling rate | The switch and adapter must negotiate the intended rate without an unsupported mode. | Switch and NIC compatibility tables. |
| Breakout capability | A high-rate port may be divided into lanes only in supported combinations. | Vendor breakout matrix for the exact software and hardware revision. |
| Transceiver or direct-attach support | Optics and cables are not interchangeable just because the connector looks similar. | Approved module and cable list. |
| Media and reach | Fiber, copper, direct-attach and active cables have different distance and installation limits. | Rack layout and the module’s reach rating. |
| Firmware and network operating system | RoCE, congestion handling and reference-architecture support depend on software versions. | Validated release pair for the platform. |
Do not treat a switch-family name as proof that every model is compatible. Obtain the exact SKU, supported firmware and port mode in writing before releasing a purchase order.
Match the physical links
Physical-layer mistakes can look like software failures. For every host-to-switch and switch-to-switch connection, record the adapter port type, switch port type, connector, lane or breakout mode, cable or transceiver part number, media type and required reach.
Optical links
Use the platform-approved optical module and fiber type for the required distance. Confirm that both ends support the same signaling rate and that the switch software recognizes the module. A module that works in a general Ethernet deployment is not automatically approved for the chosen Spectrum-X release.
Copper and direct-attach links
For short rack or adjacent-rack connections, the validated design may specify copper or a direct-attach cable. Check the maximum supported length, bend radius, connector orientation and airflow impact. Do not substitute a passive cable for an active cable, or vice versa, without confirmation from the platform documentation.

Breakouts and lane mapping
When one switch port is broken out into several links, document the lane mapping at both ends. A cable can be electrically compatible yet connected to the wrong plane or host port. Label each branch with the parent switch port and plane identifier.

Prepare the hosts and Kubernetes software
The adapter and switch cannot be validated in isolation. The Network Operator 26.7 quick start calls out SR-IOV and IOMMU capability, RDMA network-namespace configuration and a reboot for host preparation.
- Check hardware capability. Confirm that the server firmware, CPU platform and adapter support SR-IOV and IOMMU. Enable the required options in the system firmware according to the server vendor’s instructions.
- Install the validated software release. Use the Network Operator version and Spectrum-X RA release named by the platform documentation. NVIDIA lists Network Operator 26.7.x with Spectrum-X RA 2.3 as GA on the current architecture page.
- Configure the NIC. Set
linkType: EthernetandnumVfs: 1in the operator-managed NIC configuration. - Provide the profile. Create or install the architecture-appropriate profile ConfigMap and reference its name. In 26.7, the operator expects this supplied tuning profile rather than relying on earlier built-in tuning.
- Configure RDMA namespaces. Apply the namespace and device settings required by the platform quick start so the workloads can access the intended RDMA resources.
- Reboot when required. Host preparation changes such as SR-IOV and IOMMU settings take effect after a reboot. Plan the reboot before attempting cluster validation.
- Validate one host and one path first. Confirm link state, expected device exposure, RDMA availability and the assigned plane before scaling the configuration to every node.
Keep the operator manifests, profile ConfigMap, firmware versions and host BIOS settings under change control. Reproducing a known-good node is safer than hand-editing each host.
Use a staged selection workflow
- Freeze the platform name. Write down the exact GPU and server platform, not just the GPU generation.
- Locate its reference architecture. Confirm the supported adapter family, switch family and Network Operator release.
- Select plane count. Choose single, dual or quad plane only when the platform guide lists that option.
- Select load balancing. For a supported multiplane platform, compare
hwplbandswplb; use the documented hardware recommendation where applicable. - Map host ports. Assign each adapter port to a plane and a switch port.
- Choose the switch SKU. Validate port rate, density, breakout, firmware and uplink capacity against the map.
- Choose the media. Select approved optics, copper or direct-attach cables for each distance.
- Prepare software. Apply the operator release, NIC settings, profile ConfigMap, SR-IOV/IOMMU and RDMA namespace configuration.
- Order a complete bill of materials. Include adapters, switches, modules, cables, rails, power supplies and spares only after compatibility is confirmed.
- Commission incrementally. Bring up one host, then one rack, then the full fabric, recording link and plane status at each stage.
Common selection mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake or symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Buying the highest-rate NIC available | The card is outside the platform’s validated adapter matrix. | Return to the GPU/server reference architecture and choose the named family. |
| Using ConnectX-9 as if it were GA RA 2.3 hardware | Tech Preview status was confused with validated support. | Treat ConnectX-9 Spectrum-X use as preview unless the platform owner provides a newer validated matrix. |
| Calling a single-plane design “multiplane” because it has several ports | Ports were counted without assigning independent planes. | Document plane identifiers and follow the platform’s single-, dual- or quad-plane definition. |
| Configuring more than one VF by habit | An older template was reused. | For the cited 26.7 Spectrum-X NIC configuration, set numVfs: 1 unless a newer platform document explicitly changes it. |
| Leaving the profile ConfigMap out | The deployment assumed earlier operator behavior. | Supply and reference the architecture-specific profile ConfigMap required by Network Operator 26.7. |
| Links remain down after cabling | Wrong media, unsupported transceiver, incorrect breakout or mismatched rate. | Compare both ends against the exact approved module, cable, lane mode and reach list. |
| RDMA devices are absent in workloads | Namespace configuration or host SR-IOV/IOMMU preparation is incomplete. | Complete the host preparation, reboot, then verify RDMA exposure before deploying all nodes. |
| Switch ports run out during expansion | Only the initial host count was budgeted. | Reserve expansion and uplink ports in the original port map, or document the supported scaling path. |
How the documented platforms affect a purchase
HGX H100, H200 or B200 single-plane cluster
Begin with BlueField-3 as the adapter family named in the single-plane examples. Build a one-plane port map, then select the Spectrum switch SKU and physical links that match the server’s adapter ports. The operator profile, Ethernet link type, one-VF setting and host RDMA preparation remain part of the design.

Use the GB200 solution stack to validate ConnectX-7. ConnectX-8 is also permitted in single-plane mode in the cited guidance, but that does not remove the need to check the exact system integration, firmware and switch compatibility.
B300 or GB300 multiplane cluster
Use ConnectX-8 and decide whether the validated deployment is dual-plane or quad-plane. The quick start’s two-plane and four-plane counts determine how many independent paths, switch ports and physical links must be mapped. Hardware plane load balancing is the documented recommendation where the platform supports it.
Support, lifecycle and purchasing checks
Support status changes faster than physical cabling. The architecture page was updated September 9, 2026, and the cited documentation was checked on October 13, 2026. Before purchase or deployment, recheck the current reference-architecture status, adapter support, switch firmware, exact hardware SKUs, inventory and pricing.
- Request a dated compatibility statement for the platform, adapter, switch software and Network Operator release.
- Ask who owns firmware updates and escalation when a link or RoCE configuration fails.
- Confirm replacement availability for the exact adapter, switch module and cable types.
- Keep spare optics or cables only when they are on the approved list; visually similar parts are not necessarily interchangeable.
- Obtain comparable vendor quotes for power, support and serviceability after the bill of materials is complete.
A qualified AI-cluster integrator or server OEM can validate the final fabric bill of materials, but the system owner should retain the platform matrix, port map and software manifests as the authoritative design record.
