The best Docker containers for a home server depend on the job you need done, the hardware and network you already have, and the maintenance you can reliably perform. Start with a workload such as media streaming, photo management, or home automation; then verify that project’s current requirements, storage model, security needs, backup process, and update procedure. Docker Compose can keep an application stack organized, but it does not make an application secure, backed up, monitored, or maintained for you.

Choose the workload before choosing the container

A container is a packaging and isolation method, not a purpose by itself. Decide what problem the server must solve, how many people will use it, whether access is local or remote, and how much downtime or data loss you can tolerate.

Media serving

A media server must read large files, maintain a library database, and sometimes transcode video for a client that cannot play the original format. Storage throughput, network speed, processor capabilities, and optional hardware acceleration matter more than simply finding an image that starts successfully.

Photo and video management

A photo service usually creates thumbnails, indexes faces or objects, imports large libraries, and maintains a database whose performance affects every search and browse operation. It needs deliberate database storage and a backup plan; treating it like a stateless web container is a common way to lose irreplaceable metadata.

Home automation

Automation software interacts with devices, sensors, schedules, and network services. Reliability, access to the host network or hardware, and a clear upgrade path are often more important than raw CPU speed. Decide whether you want to maintain the underlying Linux system yourself or use an appliance-style operating system that handles more of the platform.

Other useful categories

Apply the same reasoning to file synchronization, document management, dashboards, DNS, password management, development tools, or monitoring. Write down the job, data created, users, exposure to the internet, and recovery target before searching for an image.

Check the host against the project’s own requirements

Requirements are application-specific. Do not treat one project’s figures as generic Docker requirements.

Workload example Current guidance and implications What to verify on your host
Immich photo and video management Its current requirements page, accessed in 2026, lists 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores as minimums, with 8 GB RAM and 4 cores recommended. The database should ideally be on local SSD storage and never on a network share. Immich requires the docker compose command; the similarly named legacy docker-compose command is deprecated and unsupported by the project. Read Immich requirements. Available memory after the host operating system and other services; free local SSD capacity for the database; CPU headroom during imports, thumbnail generation, and indexing; and a tested database backup.
Jellyfin media server Its current hardware guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends a 100 GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache. It recommends gigabit Ethernet or faster and discusses memory and hardware acceleration. The same guide suggests 20 Mbps upload bandwidth for remote access. These are Jellyfin recommendations, not universal Docker minimums. Read Jellyfin hardware selection. Whether clients direct-play your codecs; processor or GPU support for the required hardware acceleration; library and cache capacity; wired network speed; and actual upstream bandwidth if people connect from outside your home.
Home Assistant Container The Home Assistant FAQ describes the Container installation as running on a Linux system that you provide and maintain. Home Assistant OS handles upgrades and powers official hardware, so the two installation paths have different administrative responsibilities. Read the Home Assistant FAQ. Linux administration skills, device-discovery requirements, USB or host-network access, update and rollback procedures, and whether an appliance-style operating system would reduce your maintenance burden.

Measure the host rather than relying on its advertised peak specifications. Leave memory and CPU headroom for filesystem checks, updates, backups, and temporary workloads. A service that barely fits when idle can become unreliable during an import, scan, transcode, or database migration.

Know what Docker, Compose, an image, and a container instance mean

These terms describe different layers:

  • Host: the physical or virtual machine providing CPU, RAM, storage, kernel, and network connectivity.
  • Image: an immutable package containing an application’s filesystem and startup metadata. It is a template, not the running application.
  • Service: a Compose definition describing how to run an image, including mounts, ports, environment, health checks, and restart behavior.
  • Container instance: a runtime object created from an image and service definition. It can be replaced without replacing data stored outside its writable layer.
  • Compose project: a group of services and their configuration managed together from a Compose file.

Docker describes running an application on one server as the easiest deployment model and recommends separate production overrides when production configuration differs from development. Keep the Compose file, environment settings, secrets, and data layout under deliberate control; do not assume that copying an image name is a complete deployment plan. See Docker’s Compose production guidance.

Make data persistence and recovery part of the selection

Anything written only to a container’s writable layer can disappear when that container is removed. Docker’s quickstart and Jellyfin’s container documentation both illustrate the need to place persistent state in named volumes or intentional host mounts. A volume or mount preserves files across container replacement, but it is not automatically a backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Map each data class

  • Configuration: settings, users, database connection details, and generated keys.
  • Application data: databases, indexes, thumbnails, metadata, and automation history.
  • Large source data: media libraries, photographs, documents, or recordings that may already live on another disk.
  • Cache and temporary files: transcode output, thumbnails that can be regenerated, and download staging areas.

Choose a named volume when Docker-managed storage is appropriate and a host bind mount when you need a known filesystem path, existing storage layout, or independent tooling. Document ownership and permissions for every mount. For databases, prefer local storage when the project’s documentation requires it; a network share can add latency, locking problems, and a second failure domain.

Design the backup and restore path

Back up databases in a consistent manner, copy irreplaceable source files, and retain the Compose configuration needed to recreate the services. Test restoring to a temporary directory or separate host. A snapshot that cannot be read, or a backup that omits the database while preserving only media files, is not a complete recovery plan.

Plan network exposure deliberately

Compose’s default project network gives services private service-to-service connectivity. Docker states: By default, each service joins the project’s bridge network. Each container for a service is both reachable by other containers on that network, and discoverable by its service name. See Networking in Compose.

Use service names such as database or cache for connections inside the project instead of hard-coding container IP addresses. Publish only the host ports that clients actually need. A database used solely by the application usually does not need a port exposed on the home LAN.

Use host networking only for a real requirement

Docker’s host network mode shares the host’s network stack. That can be necessary for some discovery protocols or device integrations, but it removes network isolation and can create port conflicts. Docker advises using it only when genuinely required. First test whether a published port, a user-defined network, or a narrowly scoped device permission solves the problem.

Separate local and remote access

Determine whether the service needs to be reachable from the internet. If remote access is required, define which endpoint is exposed, how certificates and authentication are managed, and how you will revoke access. Do not publish administrative interfaces merely because a container listens on a port.

Handle startup order, readiness, and failures

Compose starts dependencies in order, but startup order is not readiness. Docker’s documentation says: On startup, Compose does not wait until a container is "ready", only until it’s running. Configure a health check for a dependency and use a service_healthy condition when the application must wait for that dependency to accept work. See Control startup and shutdown order in Compose.

A restart policy can bring a process back after a crash, but it does not explain why the process failed, verify that the application is usable, or restore corrupted data. Pair restart behavior with logs, resource monitoring, health checks, and an alerting method you will actually review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect secrets and reduce permissions

Give each service only the credentials and filesystem access it needs. Avoid sharing a broad host directory with unrelated containers, and avoid running an application as a privileged user unless its documentation requires it.

Compose can mount a secret as a file at /run/secrets/<secret_name>. Docker cautions that environment variables can be available to processes or printed in logs, so use Compose secrets where the application supports file-based credentials. Read Manage secrets securely in Docker Compose.

Review passwords, API tokens, private keys, database credentials, and device credentials separately. Rotate them after an accidental log disclosure or an untrusted configuration change. Keep secret files out of public repositories and restrict their host permissions.

Evaluate image provenance and the maintenance burden

For every candidate, identify who publishes the image, whether it is documented by the project, how releases are tagged, and where vulnerabilities or breaking changes are announced. An official deployment guide and a maintained image reduce ambiguity, but they do not eliminate the need to read release notes and test upgrades.

Prefer a versioning approach that lets you reproduce a known-good deployment. Blindly tracking a moving latest tag can introduce an incompatible database migration; pinning forever can leave known vulnerabilities unpatched. Establish a maintenance window, keep the previous image or configuration available for rollback, and record the last successful update.

Inspect Compose files from untrusted sources before running them. Docker’s trust-model documentation warns that some Compose fields can read host files. A file that mounts sensitive paths, adds excessive capabilities, uses host networking, or runs an unexpected command deserves review line by line. See Docker’s Compose trust model.

Use a repeatable selection and deployment process

  1. Write the job statement. Specify the users, data types, local or remote access, acceptable downtime, and whether the service is critical.
  2. Read the project’s current installation and requirements pages. Record supported operating systems, required Docker or Compose features, storage recommendations, ports, hardware acceleration notes, and upgrade warnings.
  3. Inventory the host. Measure free RAM, CPU capacity, storage type and free space, filesystem permissions, network speed, and any GPU, USB, or discovery requirement.
  4. Choose the data layout before starting the container. Decide which paths are configuration, databases, source data, and disposable cache. Use named volumes or deliberate host mounts for state that must survive replacement.
  5. Draft the Compose project. Keep related services together, use the default project network unless there is a clear reason for another network, publish only required ports, and define health checks for dependencies.
  6. Review security. Remove unnecessary capabilities, avoid privileged mode, limit mounts, use secrets for credentials, and inspect every image and Compose field.
  7. Start in a controlled test. Run docker compose config to render and validate the configuration, then start with docker compose up -d. Check logs, health status, storage paths, and authentication before importing valuable data.
  8. Exercise failure and recovery. Replace a container, restart the host, stop a dependency, and restore a small backup. Confirm that data, permissions, and service discovery behave as expected.
  9. Document operations. Record update commands, backup locations, secret rotation steps, port assignments, and rollback instructions where another household member or future you can find them.

Docker’s Compose quickstart covers the basic project workflow. Treat its examples as a starting point, not as a production security or backup design.

How the example workloads change your decision

Choosing Immich for a photo library

Immich is a photo and video management example, not a universal recommendation. Its requirements make memory, CPU, and local database storage explicit. Before importing a large library, confirm that the host has the recommended headroom, put the database on local SSD storage rather than a network share, and plan backups for both database metadata and original media. Use the currently supported docker compose workflow and re-check requirements after major releases.

Choosing Jellyfin for media

Jellyfin’s container documentation explains how to persist configuration and cache while mounting media libraries. Its hardware guidance separates storage, networking, memory, and acceleration decisions. Determine whether your clients can direct-play the files; if they cannot, match the required codecs and resolution to a supported CPU or accelerator instead of buying a GPU on the assumption that every transcode workload benefits from one. Keep the operating system, application files, and transcode cache on storage suited to the workload, and verify upstream bandwidth before promising reliable remote playback. See the Jellyfin container guide and Jellyfin storage guidance.

Choosing Home Assistant Container or Home Assistant OS

With Home Assistant Container, you supply and maintain the Linux host, Docker environment, backups, and upgrades. Home Assistant OS shifts more platform maintenance to the appliance-style operating system and supports official hardware. Choose the Container path when you deliberately want control of the host and can maintain it; choose the OS path when reducing platform administration is the higher priority. Check device access and discovery requirements before committing, because integrations may need permissions or network behavior beyond a basic web container.

Compare a shortlist without pretending there is one winner

Put each candidate in the same worksheet. A service that wins on features may lose on storage safety or maintenance effort.

Comparison axis Questions to answer
User need Does it solve the stated problem, for the actual users and clients, without unrelated components?
Official support and image provenance Is there current deployment documentation, a clear image publisher, release guidance, and a supported upgrade path?
Resources What CPU, RAM, storage, network, accelerator, USB, or host-kernel features are required or recommended?
Persistence and recovery Which files are databases, originals, configuration, or cache; how are they backed up; and can you restore them?
Network exposure Which ports must be reachable, by whom, and over which network? Can internal dependencies remain unpublished?
Secrets and permissions What credentials and host paths are needed, and can access be limited to the service that needs it?
Maintenance How often are updates released, how are migrations handled, and can you monitor and roll back the deployment?

Troubleshoot by symptom instead of reinstalling blindly

  • The service starts, then fails to connect to its database: check the dependency health status and configure a health-check condition; a running database process is not necessarily ready for connections.
  • Settings or metadata disappear after an update: verify that the relevant paths use named volumes or host mounts rather than the container writable layer, then inspect mount points and permissions.
  • Clients cannot connect: confirm the service is listening on the intended interface, that only the required host port is published, and that a firewall or router rule is not blocking access.
  • Device discovery does not work: check whether the project requires host networking, multicast, USB access, or a specific capability. Grant only the narrow permission documented for that integration.
  • Playback stutters or imports run out of memory: compare the workload with the project’s current guidance, observe CPU, RAM, disk I/O, and network use, and reduce concurrency before adding hardware.
  • An update breaks the application: stop further migrations, preserve logs and the affected data, consult the project’s release notes, and roll back using the documented image and configuration. Do not delete the database while troubleshooting.
  • A Compose file behaves unexpectedly: run docker compose config, inspect rendered mounts, ports, environment values, capabilities, and commands, and remove fields you cannot explain.

A practical go/no-go checklist

  • The service has a defined job and named users.
  • The host meets the project’s current requirements with operating headroom.
  • Persistent paths and disposable caches are identified separately.
  • Backups include the data needed to rebuild and have been restored in a test.
  • Only necessary ports, mounts, capabilities, and credentials are granted.
  • Dependencies have health checks when readiness matters.
  • The image publisher, version strategy, update process, and rollback plan are understood.
  • You can monitor the service and respond when it fails.

If any critical answer is unknown, postpone installation and resolve that uncertainty first. The right container is the one that solves the intended problem on hardware you can operate safely, with data you can recover and an update process you will follow.
