For a small homelab running a few services on one host, Docker Compose can be a sensible choice if you carefully review each project’s configuration, restrict container privileges and host access, and secure the host itself. Kubernetes is a better fit when you need controls such as scoped API access, workload admission policies, or enforced network rules between pods—and are prepared to configure and maintain them. Neither platform is secure by default; the safer choice is the one whose controls you will actually operate.
What changes when you choose Compose or Kubernetes?
The key difference is not that one platform is inherently secure. It is where the security work sits. With Compose, much of the boundary depends on what a project’s configuration allows containers to access and how you secure the Docker host. Kubernetes supplies a broader set of policy mechanisms, but they only help when configured, supported by the cluster, and kept up to date.
Docker Docs states that “Docker Compose treats every Compose file as trusted input.” That matters because a Compose file can request host privileges, filesystem access, devices, or host networking. Kubernetes shifts more control into cluster APIs and policies; that also makes protecting the API and operating the control plane part of the job.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Compose is often a reasonable match for a small, single-host setup with a limited number of services, especially when you do not need centralized workload policy or pod-level network rules. The simpler control plane can mean less orchestration infrastructure to operate, but it does not remove responsibility for configuration review, host security, updates, or backups.

Before starting an unfamiliar project, inspect the fully resolved configuration, including included or extended sources:
docker compose config
Review the output before running docker compose up or docker compose create. Pay particular attention to:
privileged: trueand added capabilities such ascap_add.- Bind mounts that expose host paths, especially sensitive directories or broad portions of the filesystem.
network_mode: host, host PID namespaces, and device access.- Published ports, which determine what can reach a service through the host.
- Image references and their provenance; a trusted-looking Compose file can still run an untrusted image.
Use non-root processes where the image and workload support them, and avoid granting capabilities the service does not need. Compose networks organize which services can communicate, but do not assume that network membership alone provides every isolation boundary you expect. Check published ports and how the host exposes each service.
When Kubernetes is worth operating
Kubernetes becomes more compelling when your threat model calls for controls at the cluster API or workload level—for example, restricting who can create workloads, applying pod security rules, or declaring which pods may communicate. Those controls add configuration and operational work: you must protect the API, define access, apply policies, and verify that the cluster’s networking implementation enforces the rules you rely on.

Control access to the API
Authentication establishes who is connecting; authorization determines what that identity may do. Use scoped role-based access control (RBAC) rather than granting broad permissions by default, and protect the control plane and its data. A person able to submit or alter workloads can often change the security posture of the cluster, so access to deployment credentials and management interfaces matters.
Constrain pod privileges
Use Pod Security Standards and Pod Security Admission to set and enforce workload restrictions appropriate to your cluster. Configure security contexts for non-root execution and other needed protections, and use mechanisms such as seccomp, AppArmor, or SELinux where supported and appropriate. Avoid privileged containers unless a documented workload requirement justifies them: privileged mode can override or undo important restrictions.
Apply network policy with a supported provider
Kubernetes NetworkPolicy lets you declare permitted pod traffic, but it does not enforce itself. Effectiveness depends on whether the cluster’s networking provider supports NetworkPolicy and how that provider is configured. Confirm the selected implementation’s current documentation and test the resulting traffic behavior rather than assuming that writing a policy creates isolation.
Compare the controls you will maintain
| Security area | Docker Compose | Kubernetes |
|---|---|---|
| Trust boundary | Review each project as trusted code, including privileges, mounts, devices, host namespaces, remote includes, and image references. | Protect the API and control-plane data; limit who can submit or modify workloads. |
| Workload privilege | Prefer non-privileged processes and remove capabilities the service does not need. | Use security contexts, non-root execution, and Pod Security Standards; avoid privileged mode unless required. |
| Network controls | Use networks to organize service connectivity, and check host ports and exposure separately. | Use NetworkPolicy for pod traffic where the networking provider enforces it. |
| Secrets | Secret behavior depends on the deployment platform. Do not assume standalone Compose has Swarm’s protections. | Use the Secret API with deliberate access and storage protections; encryption at rest is a control to configure, not a universal guarantee. |
| Operational work | For a small single-host setup, there may be fewer orchestration control planes, but the host and configuration still need active security maintenance. | Policy and API controls require corresponding work on the cluster, RBAC, admission, and networking. |
Handle secrets according to the deployment
A .env file, a Compose secret, and a Kubernetes Secret are not interchangeable protection systems. Consider where each value is stored, how it reaches the workload, which users or services can read it, and how it is rotated. Compose describes secrets as sensitive data mounted as files, with implementation details depending on the platform. Docker’s documented encryption in transit and at rest applies specifically to Docker Swarm secrets; do not extend that claim to every standalone Compose deployment.

Kubernetes provides a Secret API, but using it does not by itself guarantee that stored values are protected from unauthorized access. Restrict access through RBAC and assess storage protections, including encryption at rest, for the cluster you operate.
Make the choice using your workload and threat model
- Choose Compose when you have a modest set of services on one host, can review project files, and can keep container privileges, mounts, and exposed ports limited.
- Choose Kubernetes when you need API-level access management, workload policy enforcement, or pod-to-pod network policy—and can maintain the cluster and a networking provider that enforces the policies.
- Reconsider either setup if you cannot keep its host or control plane updated, protect management access, maintain backups, or diagnose policy failures.
Compare the controls you will operate in practice: workload privileges, management access, network enforcement, secrets lifecycle, updates, backups, and your ability to investigate failures. A carefully restricted Compose host may be a better fit than a lightly maintained Kubernetes cluster; the platform name alone does not establish the security outcome.
Keep the host and management surfaces in scope
Both approaches depend on the security of the machines and interfaces beneath them. Keep the operating system and container or cluster components updated, limit access to management interfaces, and maintain backups you can restore. For Kubernetes, check the current documentation for your distribution and networking provider; defaults and available enforcement can differ by implementation.
