Choose design software by testing what you can take out, what remains editable in the destination application, and which collaboration data disappears. A PNG or PDF may be perfect for delivery but useless for continued editing; a native project backup may preserve structure while remaining locked to one vendor. The safest choice is the tool that passes a small migration test using your real files before you commit a large library or team.

Start by listing every destination that matters, then verify supported formats, permissions, account-transfer options, and the survival of text, effects, layers, assets, components, pages, comments, and history. Export a representative sample, import it into the intended application, repair what breaks, and keep both a native copy and an interchange copy.

What “export” means in a design workflow

“Export” describes several different outcomes. Treating them as interchangeable is the fastest way to discover that a supposedly portable project is only a flattened picture.

Rendered deliverables

PNG, JPEG, WebP, and similar image files record the appearance of a design at a chosen size, resolution, and color setting. PDF can preserve print-oriented geometry and, depending on how it is created, some vector or text information. These files are appropriate for clients, websites, printers, and approvals. They generally do not preserve the original layer tree, component relationships, responsive behavior, or application-specific effects.

Interchange formats

SVG is a common choice for moving vector assets between design tools. It can carry paths, fills, strokes, text, and some effects, but each application decides which SVG features it reads and how it maps them to its own object model. A destination may convert text to outlines, substitute fonts, flatten filters, or discard unsupported metadata. SVG is therefore useful for many assets, not proof of a lossless project round trip.

Other interchange formats, such as PDF or PSD where supported, have their own trade-offs. A format label says what the file is called, not how faithfully a particular receiving application will reconstruct your project.

Native project copies

A native file or project package is the closest thing to a structural backup for the application that created it. It may retain layers, components, pages, styles, and application-specific settings that no interchange format can represent. It is not automatically portable: the file may be proprietary, version-dependent, or importable only by the same product family.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Figma describes its local-copy files as proprietary and warns that their formats may change. A native copy should be treated as a preservation layer, not as your only migration plan.

Portability criteria that matter before you subscribe

Compare candidates against the same questions. “Exports SVG” is only one checkbox and says little about whether your actual project can move.

Criterion Question to ask Why it matters
Editable formats Can the software export the layers or objects you need as SVG, PDF, PSD, or another format the destination edits? A final image is not an editable handoff.
Destination support Can the receiving application import that format, and which version does it support? Export support without a compatible importer creates a dead end.
Fidelity What happens to text, fonts, effects, layers, assets, components, and pages after import? Small conversions can become hours of repair.
Scope Can you export selected objects, a page, a file, or an entire workspace in bulk? One-at-a-time export is impractical for a large library.
Permissions and plans Which roles and subscription tiers can export, copy, or transfer ownership? A technically supported format is irrelevant if your account cannot access it.
Native backup Can you download a project copy and open it later? Cloud access and a local recovery path are different things.
Account or team transfer Can ownership, files, libraries, and seats move to another account or team? A file export may not move the surrounding workspace.
Collaboration context Do comments, version history, shared libraries, and component links survive? Project content and project history are separate assets.

Do not rank one vendor above another on these criteria unless the same workflow has been tested or the behavior is directly documented. Export and import implementations differ even when two products advertise the same format.

A practical method for choosing portable design software

1. List deliverables and destinations

Write down every output you produce: web graphics, print PDFs, icons, animation frames, client review files, and editable handoffs. Beside each output, name the application, printer, developer tool, or client workflow that receives it. Include a future destination, not just your current one. If a contractor may use another editor next year, that editor belongs on the list now.

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

Separate “must remain editable” from “appearance only.” A logo supplied to another designer needs vectors and usable text or outlines; a social image may only need a PNG. This distinction prevents you from paying for portability you do not actually require while exposing the files that do.

2. Read current import, export, and permission documentation

Check the product’s official help pages for each format and workflow. Look for limits on file size, page count, batch operations, account roles, and subscription tiers. Confirm whether export is available to viewers, editors, or owners, and whether an administrator can disable copying.

Do not rely on a marketing list of file extensions. Find out whether the documentation promises editable layers or merely a rendered file, whether a multi-page project becomes separate files, and whether a native copy is proprietary.

3. Build a representative sample

Create one small project that contains the features your real work uses:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Real fonts, including a font that the destination may not have.
  • Text styles, mixed weights, and text on a path if relevant.
  • Vector paths, masks, nested groups, blend modes, and transparency.
  • Images, linked assets, embedded assets, and an image with an unusual color profile.
  • Components or symbols, instances, variants, shared styles, and library references.
  • Multiple pages or frames, naming conventions, and the largest artboard you routinely deliver.
  • Effects such as blur, shadows, gradients, filters, or animations that matter to your brand.

Use a copy of the sample, not your only production file. Record the source application version, destination application version, fonts installed, and export settings so you can repeat the test after an update.

4. Export and import into the real destination

  1. Save the sample in the candidate’s native format.
  2. Export the editable interchange format you would actually hand off, such as SVG or PDF, and separately export the final rendered deliverables.
  3. Open or import each file in the intended destination application, not merely in a browser preview.
  4. Compare the imported result with the source at 100% zoom and at the final delivery size.
  5. Inspect every layer, text object, font, effect, mask, image, component, page, and naming convention.
  6. Make a small edit in the destination, save it, and reopen it. A file that looks right but cannot be edited reliably is not a successful migration.

Record the result in a conversion log. Mark each feature as preserved and editable, preserved but flattened, visually changed, substituted, or missing. Include the repair time; a format that requires an hour of cleanup for every file may be less portable than one with a smaller export footprint but predictable results.

5. Keep two kinds of backup

Save a native project copy for structural recovery and an interchange or rendered copy for use outside the original application. Store at least one copy separately from the working account when account loss, billing problems, or team changes would otherwise block access. Periodically open a backup on a different machine or account. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a verified recovery path.

6. Test a team move before scheduling it

For a team migration, use a pilot project. Test ownership transfer, member roles, shared libraries, external links, comments, version history, and the destination team’s permissions. Confirm who can export before the move and who can open the result afterward. Only then schedule the full transfer and communicate a freeze window.

What commonly survives—and what commonly does not

Text and fonts

Text may remain editable while changing line breaks, kerning, or wrapping if the destination lacks the original font. An importer may replace a font silently or convert text to outlines. Outlines preserve appearance but remove easy text editing and accessibility. Keep a font inventory with the project and decide whether the recipient is allowed to receive the font files.

Effects and blending

Simple fills and strokes usually have better interchange prospects than proprietary filters, advanced blend modes, live shadows, or animation timelines. An importer may flatten an effect into pixels, approximate it, or drop it. Compare both the visual result and the editability of the underlying object.

Layers, pages, and components

A destination can flatten nested groups, reorder layers, or turn pages into separate documents. Components are especially application-specific. Even when an instance appears intact, its link to a shared library may be gone. Test a library update and a component edit, not just the initial appearance.

Images and links

Embedded images are easier to move as a single file but increase project size. Linked images can preserve a cleaner project but break when the receiving application cannot resolve the original path. Package or copy linked assets and inspect color profiles, cropping, and resolution after import.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comments and history

Visual content and collaboration records are separate. A downloaded project may omit comments, approvals, activity logs, and version history even when the canvas itself looks complete. Export those records or retain read-only access to the original workspace if they are part of your legal or production record.

Documented examples: how product behavior changes the decision

Figma export and local copies

Figma’s export documentation covers selecting layers, frames, components, groups, sections, a slice, or a whole page. Whether a viewer can export depends on the owner’s copying and sharing restrictions. Therefore, a client or contractor’s role and the file’s permission settings belong in your migration plan.

For moving assets between design tools, Figma recommends SVG and also documents copy-and-paste workflows. That recommendation is practical for many vector assets, but it does not establish lossless transfer of every project feature.

Figma’s local-copy guidance lists a .fig format for Design and separate formats for other Figma products. It identifies these files as proprietary and subject to change. A local copy omits version history and comments. Components imported from a copy become new main components and no longer receive updates from the original library. Those limitations make a local copy useful for recovery while requiring a separate plan for collaboration context and library relationships.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Figma-to-Figma move, documented routes include transferring an account or team and saving a copy, then importing it. The second route carries the local-copy limitations above; test the transfer route that matches your ownership and permission model.

Affinity format documentation

Affinity provides official export, share, and publish guidance. An older Designer format table lists formats including PDF, SVG, and PSD. Because that table is dated, treat it as an indication of documented formats rather than a definitive current compatibility list. Verify the current application version and run the sample import yourself before promising a client or teammate a particular round trip.

Canva developer export behavior

Canva’s developer documentation describes image, video, and PDF exports. It notes that a multi-page design exported to a format without multi-page support can be returned as a ZIP containing separate page files. This is useful when designing an automated handoff, but developer documentation is not a complete consumer feature comparison. Confirm the exact export available in your account and inspect the resulting page files.

Costs, permissions, and plan changes

Portability can be constrained by the plan even when the format exists. Record the entitlement alongside each test: who can export, whether bulk export is available, whether native downloads are allowed, and whether team transfer requires an administrator.

Failure modes and recovery steps

The export looks right but is not editable

You probably exported a rendered PNG or a flattened PDF. Return to the source and export an editable format supported by the destination. If the destination cannot represent a feature, preserve the native source and document the manual repair required.

Fonts reflow or substitute

Install the same licensed fonts in the destination where permitted, or export a second version with text outlined for appearance-only use. Keep a live-text version for future editing and label the outlined file clearly.

Effects disappear

Identify the first unsupported effect by disabling effects one at a time in a test copy. Recreate it with destination-native controls, rasterize only the affected element when necessary, and keep the original effect in the native backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pages arrive as separate files

Check whether the receiving format supports multiple pages. If it does not, expect separate files or a ZIP package, as documented for some Canva developer export workflows. Establish a naming convention and a manifest so page order is not lost.

Components stop updating

Assume that a cross-account or cross-application import creates independent components unless the documentation explicitly promises library continuity. Rebuild the destination library deliberately and record which files now depend on it.

The team cannot export

Review the owner’s copying and sharing settings, the member’s role, and the plan’s export entitlement. Ask an owner or administrator to perform the export only through an approved process; do not bypass a restriction by sharing credentials.

The native backup will not open later

Keep an interchange export and a rendered reference beside the native file. Record the application version used to create it, and periodically test opening the backup after major product updates. If the format is proprietary and may change, maintain more than one dated copy rather than overwriting the only file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A simple scoring framework for the final choice

After the pilot, score each candidate from 0 to 2 on the criteria that matter to your workflow:

  • 2: documented and verified in your sample.
  • 1: possible with repair, a role restriction, or an uncertain version dependency.
  • 0: unavailable, flattened beyond use, or not supported by the destination.

Weight “must remain editable” destinations twice. Add separate notes for collaboration history, component libraries, and account transfer; do not hide them inside a single format score. The highest total is not automatically the right choice if it fails one non-negotiable requirement, such as editable SVG handoff or a legally required record of comments.

Migration checklist

  • List final deliverables and editable destinations.
  • Confirm current import, export, permission, and plan rules.
  • Build a sample with real fonts, effects, assets, components, pages, and naming.
  • Export native, editable-interchange, and rendered versions.
  • Import into the actual destination application and test a real edit.
  • Record preserved, flattened, substituted, changed, and missing features.
  • Measure repair time and document repeatable fixes.
  • Save a native backup and a separate interchange or rendered backup.
  • Verify that backups open and that linked assets are available.
  • Pilot ownership, libraries, permissions, comments, and history before a team move.

Design software is portable only to the extent that your receiving workflow can use the files. A small, representative test exposes that reality before your entire library, client history, or team depends on an export promise.
