Choose indexes for important queries in your real workload, then check their effects with execution plans and measured performance. Keep an index when the read benefit justifies its storage and the extra work it adds to data changes. There is no universally correct number of indexes for a table: the right set depends on your database engine, schema, and workload.
How do I know which columns to index?
Start with queries that matter in practice—not every column that appears in a WHERE, JOIN, or ORDER BY clause. Prioritize frequent or consequential queries, and use representative workload evidence to identify where an index might help. An index that serves only an unlikely query may not be worth the maintenance cost.
There is no general column-selection recipe that works across databases and workloads. PostgreSQL 16’s documentation recommends examining real-life use and experimenting rather than following a universal procedure: examining index usage.
Build a shortlist from real queries
- Identify important queries and the filters, joins, and ordering they use.
- Note which tables change frequently; indexes on those tables can add costs to inserts, updates, and deletes.
- Consider whether a candidate index could benefit more than one important query, without assuming that a wider index is automatically better.
How do I tell whether an index is being used—and helping?
First make sure the optimizer has current, useful statistics. PostgreSQL 16 says to run ANALYZE first: statistics about data-value distributions help its planner estimate row counts and plan costs. Then inspect the query plan with EXPLAIN. Use EXPLAIN ANALYZE when you need to compare estimates with observed execution behavior. See PostgreSQL’s guidance on examining index usage.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A plan that uses an index is evidence, not proof that the query is faster. Compare representative runs and relevant measures, such as latency, throughput, or rows examined, using the same conditions. Also check the effect on the wider workload: a read improvement can come with extra work on every relevant data change.
Execution-plan tools and details differ by engine and version. Microsoft documents estimated and actual execution plans for SQL Server in its index design guide. Use the plan and measurement facilities for the database you actually run.

Can too many indexes slow down inserts and updates?
Yes. Indexes take storage and must be maintained as data changes. SQL Server’s design guidance warns that speculative over-indexing can slow modifications and cause concurrency problems. MySQL 8.0 likewise cautions that unnecessary indexes waste space and make the optimizer spend time deciding which indexes to use.
Evaluate an index against both its read benefit and its costs across the workload. A useful comparison includes query performance, index storage and width, and the effects on frequently modified data. Microsoft’s SQL Server index design guide discusses this balance; MySQL’s optimization and indexes documentation explains why unnecessary indexes should be avoided.

How many indexes should a table have?
No fixed index count is established as right for every table. A table with read-heavy queries may justify a different set from a frequently changed table, and the answer also depends on the database engine and data distribution. SQL Server’s guidance describes a small number of narrow indexes as a sound starting point for write-heavy OLTP workloads, not as a universal limit.
Keep an index when it earns its ongoing cost for important work. Reconsider indexes that do not provide a measured benefit, and revisit the design when the application or workload changes. Avoid adding speculative indexes simply to give the optimizer more options.

Should I add a composite index or separate indexes?
That choice depends on the target engine and the queries. PostgreSQL can combine multiple indexes with bitmap scans, but bitmap scans visit rows in physical order and discard the ordering of the source indexes. A query with ORDER BY may therefore need a separate sort. PostgreSQL describes this behavior in its documentation on combining multiple indexes.
Compare candidate designs against the actual query plan and workload rather than treating separate or combined indexes as interchangeable. Exact key ordering, supported index types, and whether a particular design is beneficial depend on the database version, schema, data distribution, and workload; the sources cited here do not establish a universal composite-index rule.

A practical process for testing an index
- Choose a target query. Select an important query from the real workload and record a representative baseline.
- Validate planner statistics. For PostgreSQL, run
ANALYZEbefore interpreting the plan. Use the appropriate statistics-maintenance approach for your engine. - Inspect the plan. Use the target database’s plan tool to see whether the candidate can help the query’s filtering, joining, or ordering.
- Test one candidate design at a time. Compare query behavior under comparable conditions; do not assume that index use alone proves an improvement.
- Measure the trade-offs. Check the read benefit alongside storage and the effects on inserts, updates, and deletes—especially on frequently modified tables.
- Keep or revise based on evidence. Retain indexes whose workload benefit justifies their costs, and reassess the set as the application and its usage evolve.
Syntax, plan behavior, and index-combination options are database-specific. Confirm the engine and version before applying implementation steps; the PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and MySQL documentation linked above covers the versions or pages named there, not every database product.
