Choose cloud storage by checking two separate promises: whether you can reach your files when needed, and whether you can recover them after deletion, corruption, or account compromise. Then verify redundancy, version retention, backup isolation, and restore time against your own recovery needs. High durability alone is not a backup and does not guarantee uninterrupted access.

Availability, durability, and recoverability are different

Availability means being able to access data when you request it. Google Cloud defines it as “The ability to access data immediately upon request.” Durability is long-term protection that data remains intact and uncorrupted; Google defines it as “Long-term protection to ensure data remains intact and uncorrupted.” Neither measure, by itself, says how quickly you can restore a deleted file or recover from a compromised account. Google Cloud explains the distinction.

For example, Google Cloud Storage documents an 11-nines annual durability design target (99.999999999%). Amazon Web Services gives the same durability design target for Amazon S3. These figures describe the services’ stated durability designs, not uptime commitments, recovery guarantees, or protection from a user or attacker deleting data. Google Cloud documentation and the Amazon S3 FAQ describe their respective targets.

Start with the failures you need to survive

Before comparing services, decide what “reliable” must mean for your files. Consider losing a device, an infrastructure zone, a region, access to an account, or the files themselves through accidental deletion, overwrite, corruption, or malicious activity. A design that handles one kind of failure may not handle another.

  • Device loss: Can you sign in from another device and retrieve the files?
  • Zone or regional disruption: Are copies held across zones or regions, and how does access fail over?
  • Deletion or overwrite: Are earlier versions or deleted items retained, and for how long?
  • Account compromise: Can an attacker or compromised administrator also erase the recovery copies?
  • Lost encryption keys: If you control the keys, is there a protected recovery path? Google warns that losing customer-managed keys can make otherwise durable data unreadable. Google Cloud discusses this and other backup considerations.

Set your recovery targets before choosing

Two targets make the comparison practical. The recovery time objective (RTO) is the acceptable delay between an interruption and restoration. The recovery point objective (RPO) is the acceptable age of the latest recovery point—in other words, how much recent work you can afford to lose. AWS defines these terms in its backup-strategy guidance.

Translate those targets into settings you can verify: how often copies are made, how long versions are kept, what can be restored (a file, folder, application, volume, or whole instance), and how long an actual restore takes. A service’s replication RPO is not necessarily the same as your backup RPO: replication may copy a mistaken deletion or corrupted change to another location.

Check where copies are stored and how failover works

Redundancy scope determines which infrastructure failures a design is meant to tolerate. Google Cloud Storage documents regional buckets as storing data across at least two zones in a selected region, designed to tolerate loss of one zone. Its dual- and multi-region configurations keep copies across regions and are described as active-active. Details and behavior depend on the configured location and service settings. See Google Cloud’s location and replication documentation.

For documented dual- and multi-region configurations, Google lists a 15-minute RPO with turbo replication and a 12-hour RPO with default replication. These are configuration-specific replication targets, not universal cloud-storage guarantees or a substitute for retaining independent backups. Check that the relevant configuration applies to your bucket and workload.

Amazon says the standard regional S3 design described in its FAQ stores data redundantly across at least three Availability Zones. Its FAQ also cautions that One Zone storage classes can lose data in a full zone loss. These are infrastructure object-storage configurations, not claims about consumer file-sync plans. Amazon’s S3 FAQ describes the design and its caveat.

For any service, look for its published availability commitment, exclusions, geographic scope, and failover procedure. Establish whether failover is automatic or requires you to change endpoints or initiate recovery. An availability SLA is a contractual, plan- and service-specific commitment; a durability design target is not an uptime SLA. Do not assume a consumer plan has the same terms or architecture as an infrastructure storage product.

Does cloud storage count as a backup?

Not automatically. A synchronized or replicated copy can help when a device fails, but it may also reflect deletions or unwanted changes. AWS states, “S3’s durability system does not protect against accidental or malicious deletes.” It says that once a delete is requested, AWS deletes the data and cannot recover it unless the customer has configured additional protections. Amazon’s S3 FAQ explains the limits and available controls.

For important data, keep a separately controlled backup in addition to the primary copy. Depending on your threat model, that could be in another region or cloud, on-premises, or on physically isolated tape or disk. A separate external drive can serve as a local copy if it is kept current and disconnected or otherwise isolated when the goal is protection from account compromise. Test that you can restore from it. Google Cloud’s guidance discusses independent backup locations and controls.

Verify recovery features rather than trusting labels

Version history and deletion recovery

Confirm whether versioning or deleted-file recovery is enabled, how far back it reaches, and whether an administrator can permanently remove retained copies. In Google Cloud Storage, Object Versioning can preserve deleted objects as noncurrent versions until they are explicitly removed. Google’s protection and recovery overview lists this and other options.

  • Plug-and-play expandability
  • Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)

Amazon S3 Versioning can preserve earlier object versions after overwrites or deletes, but customers must enable it. Lifecycle policies can expire older versions, so a versioning label does not guarantee a particular recovery window. AWS says normal S3 rates apply to each stored or requested version. The S3 FAQ covers versioning, lifecycle rules, and rates.

Retention locks and administrator protection

For ransomware or administrator error, check whether retained copies can be made immutable for a defined period and who has authority to change the policy. S3 Object Lock supports a write-once-read-many approach that can prevent object versions from being overwritten or deleted during configured retention or a legal hold. It is an infrastructure feature that must be configured; it is not a default guarantee for every storage product. AWS describes Object Lock in its S3 FAQ.

Google’s guidance also points to retention policies and locks, audit logs, role-based access, and least-privilege separation. Keep backup administration and credentials as separate as practical from the everyday account that can modify primary data. Google Cloud’s backup guidance and Cloud Storage’s recovery overview describe relevant controls.

Compare consumer sync services and object storage appropriately

Consumer file-sync services are built around people accessing and synchronizing files across devices. Infrastructure object storage, including Google Cloud Storage and Amazon S3, provides configurable storage and data-protection features that customers or applications must set up. The object-storage examples above do not establish the recovery behavior, availability terms, default settings, or pricing of consumer plans.

For a personal or small-business file-sync plan, check that plan’s current documentation for deleted-file recovery, version-history duration, account recovery, device limits, availability commitments, and whether retention is included or optional. For object storage, inspect location type, versioning, retention, replication, lifecycle, access controls, and backup configuration. In either class, distinguish features enabled by default from those you must configure.

Test the restore path and account for retained copies

A recovery feature is useful only if you can use it when needed. Test restoring a representative file or dataset, including the permissions and credentials required. Measure whether the process meets your RTO and whether the recovered point meets your RPO. If recovery must work during an account or regional incident, test that scenario rather than only restoring from the primary account in normal conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retention also affects cost and administration. Multiple versions and replicas consume storage, and lifecycle rules that remove old versions can shorten the recovery window. AWS explicitly notes that normal S3 rates apply to each version stored or requested. Set a retention period that matches the data’s recovery needs, and review the rules that eventually delete copies. AWS documents the S3 versioning and lifecycle behavior.

A practical selection checklist

  • Write down the acceptable RTO and RPO for each important data set.
  • Identify the failures the service’s redundancy design is meant to tolerate: device, zone, region, deletion, or account compromise.
  • Confirm whether versioning, deletion recovery, replication, and retention locks are enabled, and who can disable or remove them.
  • Check the retention period, lifecycle rules, and costs for versions and replicas.
  • Keep an independent backup under separate control, using a location or medium appropriate to the threat.
  • Run a restore test and verify its time, granularity, access requirements, and recovered point.
  • Read the current, applicable availability terms and exclusions; do not treat a durability target as an availability promise.
