No consumer cloud-storage service in the provider documentation reviewed here is confirmed to protect stored files with post-quantum cryptography. That does not prove no provider offers it; it means a “best” ranking would overstate what the available product-specific evidence establishes. To assess a service, look for explicit details about file encryption and key management—not just a claim about quantum-safe connections.

What “quantum-resistant cloud storage” needs to protect

Cloud storage involves several security layers. A post-quantum feature at one layer does not automatically protect the others. In particular, protecting data while it travels between your device and a service is different from protecting stored file contents and the keys that encrypt them.

  • Transport: TLS protects a connection between a client and a server. A post-quantum or hybrid TLS key exchange can strengthen that connection against future cryptographic threats, but does not by itself change how an uploaded file is encrypted at rest.
  • File contents: The provider should say whether files are encrypted on your device before upload, or encrypted after they reach the service. It should identify the algorithm and explain which files and clients are covered.
  • Encryption keys: Ask who creates and controls the file-encryption keys, whether the provider can decrypt content, and how sharing, account recovery, and lost devices work.
  • Other stored data: Backups, prior file versions, filenames, and other metadata may have different protection from the main file. A claim about encrypted files does not automatically cover these.

“Zero knowledge,” “end-to-end encrypted,” “encrypted at rest,” and “NIST-aligned” can describe useful protections, but none alone establishes post-quantum encryption of stored files. The provider needs to connect its algorithm and implementation to the specific layer you want protected.

What the current documented examples show

The examples below illustrate why service scope matters. They are not a ranking of quantum-resistant cloud-storage products: the cited materials do not establish post-quantum encryption of consumer cloud files at rest.

#1 Best Overall
Apricorn 2TB Aegis Padlock USB 3.0 256-Bit AES XTS Hardware Encrypted Portable External Hard Drive (A25-3PL256-2000)
  • Hardware encrypted drive
  • Simple to use pin access. RPM-5400
  • Administrator password feature
  • Bus powered
  • Utilizes Military Grade FIPS PUB 197 Validated Encryption Algorithm
Service or provider What the cited documentation establishes What it does not establish
Amazon S3 AWS documents hybrid post-quantum key exchange for TLS requests to S3. The feature is described as protection for data in transit. AWS S3 PQ-TLS documentation The cited page does not establish post-quantum encryption of stored objects or their at-rest encryption keys.
Google Cloud Google describes ML-KEM in hybrid mode for specified endpoints, including google.com and *.googleapis.com, as part of its infrastructure transition. Google Cloud’s PQC roadmap The cited roadmap does not establish that a consumer cloud-drive product encrypts all stored files with post-quantum cryptography.
Cloudflare Cloudflare documents post-quantum work in its SSL/TLS context, including ML-DSA support. Cloudflare’s documentation The cited page does not establish post-quantum protection for files stored in a consumer cloud-storage service.
Proton Drive Proton’s security page describes end-to-end encryption and Curve25519 elliptic-curve cryptography for file security. Proton Drive security information The cited Drive page does not document post-quantum file encryption. Proton’s separate announcement concerns Proton Mail; it is not evidence that the same protection applies to Drive. Proton Mail announcement

AWS’s broader readiness material also lists S3 hybrid post-quantum key exchange as launched, but support can depend on the endpoint, region, client, and protocol. Check the current service documentation for the configuration you actually use rather than assuming every connection is covered. AWS post-quantum confidentiality readiness

How to judge a provider’s post-quantum claim

Before treating a service as a candidate, find a provider document that answers these questions. If a claim only describes TLS, it supports a transport-protection claim—not a claim that files stored in the cloud are quantum-resistant.

Apricorn 500GB Aegis Padlock USB 3.0 256-bit AES XTS Hardware Encrypted Portable External Hard Drive (A25-3PL256-500)
  • Utilizes Military Grade FIPS PUB 197 Validated Encryption Algorithm
  • Super fast USB 3.0 Connection - Data transfer speeds up to 10X faster than USB 2.0
  • Software Free Design - With no admin rights needed
  • Sealed from Physical Attacks by Tough Epoxy Coating
  • Brute Force Self Destruct Feature
  1. Which layer is protected? Look for an explicit statement about client-side file encryption or encryption at rest, not just a network connection.
  2. Which algorithm and version are used? The provider should name the algorithm, parameter set where relevant, and whether the design is hybrid or post-quantum-only. “Quantum safe” without implementation details is not enough to assess coverage.
  3. How are file keys handled? Check who generates and holds them, whether the provider can decrypt files, and how sharing and account recovery affect key control.
  4. What data and clients are included? Confirm whether the feature covers new uploads, existing files, backups, and versions, and whether it works across all relevant apps and endpoints or only selected ones.
  5. Is the feature on by default? Look for required settings, migration steps, and any limits on supported regions or clients. A feature that must be enabled or used through a particular endpoint may not protect every workflow.
  6. What evidence supports the claim? Prefer technical documentation that identifies the implementation and its scope. Check whether the provider describes independent audit evidence, performance implications, and recovery behavior; do not assume these from a marketing label.

Use NIST standards as a benchmark, not a product label

NIST has finalized three post-quantum cryptography standards: FIPS 203 defines ML-KEM for key establishment; FIPS 204 defines ML-DSA and FIPS 205 defines SLH-DSA, both digital-signature schemes. NIST says organizations should begin migration to post-quantum cryptography. NIST’s post-quantum cryptography overview NIST NCCoE migration FAQ

These standards are useful reference points, but a provider’s use of a standardized algorithm somewhere in its infrastructure does not prove that stored files are protected by it. Key establishment for a TLS connection and the encryption and management of file contents are separate design questions. A useful product claim explains the connection between the algorithm, the keys, and the files it covers.

What to choose if you need cloud storage now

If post-quantum protection of stored files is a strict requirement, do not select a service based only on a “quantum-safe” TLS announcement or a general cloud-provider roadmap. Ask the provider for product-specific documentation covering file encryption, key management, client coverage, and existing data. If that documentation does not answer those points, treat at-rest post-quantum protection as unverified.

If your immediate priority is privacy rather than a verified post-quantum guarantee, compare services on their documented encryption model, key control, sharing and recovery options, and platform support. Proton Drive, for example, documents end-to-end encryption and Curve25519, but the cited Drive security page does not establish post-quantum protection. That distinction lets you weigh its documented privacy properties without mistaking them for a quantum-resistant storage guarantee.

The available provider materials are a bounded set, not a complete market census or an independent cryptographic audit. A service’s documentation may change, so check the current, product-specific description before relying on a post-quantum claim.
