For a versatile first lens on the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, start by choosing between Canon’s two RF 24-105mm kit zooms: the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM for a compact everyday range, or the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM if you want a constant f/4 maximum aperture. Neither is the right choice for everyone. Your subjects, light, need for close focus, and willingness to carry a larger or more costly lens should decide it. If you already own EF or EF-S lenses, check whether an adapter is a better path before replacing them.

Start with the subjects you photograph

Lens choice is easier when you begin with what you need to photograph, rather than with a list of specifications. The R6 Mark II is a full-frame camera, but a lens that works well for family outings may not be the best tool for indoor events, small subjects, or distant wildlife. The available Canon product information supports a practical starting comparison between two standard zooms, not a universal ranking of every RF lens.

  • Everyday, travel, and family: Consider the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM if you want a broad standard-zoom range and prioritize a lightweight, compact lens. Canon describes it as versatile and lists optical image stabilization and 0.5x Centre Focus Macro capability. Canon’s RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM product page
  • Indoor work, events, or changing light: Compare the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM. Its maximum aperture remains f/4 throughout the zoom range, unlike the STM model’s variable f/4-7.1 maximum aperture. That gives you a more consistent exposure aperture as you zoom, though f/4 is not a guarantee of adequate shutter speed in every dim setting. Canon’s RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM product page
  • Portraits, very close subjects, wide scenes, or wildlife: First decide what focal length, close-focus ability, and aperture your subjects require. The two standard zooms are useful starting points, but the available specifications do not establish a single specialist lens as the best option for these subjects.
  • An existing EF or EF-S collection: Check the exact lens and adapter combination before buying a replacement. Canon lists an EF-EOS R mount adapter in its EOS R6 Mark II kit accessory catalog and describes it as enabling EF/EF-S lens compatibility with EOS R cameras. Canon’s EOS R6 Mark II kit accessory listing

Canon identified both RF 24-105mm models as kit options for the EOS R6 Mark II in its November 2, 2022 announcement. That makes them well-supported general-purpose starting points, but a kit designation is not proof that either suits every photographer or is the best value at today’s local prices. Compare the two RF 24-105mm zooms

Both lenses cover the same stated 24-105mm focal-length range, but their apertures and Canon’s stated design priorities differ. Use the table to narrow the choice; it is not an independent image-quality or handling test.

The table distinguishes Canon’s published specifications from details that have not been established consistently for both lenses here. In particular, it does not claim that the STM model is a specific number of grams lighter, that either lens has a particular weather-sealing rating, or that one produces better images. Check those exact details on the current official product page and retailer listing for your market before purchase.

Understand what aperture changes when you zoom

The STM lens is marked f/4-7.1: its maximum aperture varies across the zoom range, reaching f/7.1 at the long end. The L lens maintains f/4 at every focal length. A lower f-number allows a wider maximum aperture, which can help you use a faster shutter speed or a lower ISO in low light. The practical difference matters most when the subject is moving or when the light is poor.

A constant f/4 also makes exposure behavior more predictable as you zoom. With a variable-aperture zoom, the maximum available aperture narrows as you move through the range; if the camera is using that maximum, the exposure settings may need to change. This is a working advantage of constant aperture, not a promise that every photograph will be brighter or sharper.

For a still subject in low light, stabilization may help reduce blur caused by camera movement. It cannot freeze a person walking, a performer moving, or an animal in action. For those subjects, shutter speed is the constraint: a wider available aperture can help keep it high enough, while stabilization alone cannot compensate for subject motion. This distinction is why event photographers should weigh the L lens’s constant f/4 against the STM lens’s compact positioning rather than treating stabilization as a substitute for aperture.

Know what stabilization can and cannot do

Canon specifies five-stop optical image stabilization for the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM. That is Canon’s manufacturer-reported specification, not an independently verified result, and stabilization performance varies with shooting conditions and technique. Canon also reported up to eight stops of in-body image stabilization for the EOS R6 Mark II, under a specific condition: CIPA-standard compliant testing with the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM at 105mm. That figure is likewise a Canon-reported result, not a general guarantee for every lens or focal length. Canon’s November 2, 2022 announcement

Think of optical and in-body stabilization as support for camera shake, especially when handholding a relatively still scene. They do not make a slow shutter speed safe for a moving subject. If your main challenge is photographing people or action indoors, evaluate the aperture and the shutter speed you need before deciding that an IS rating settles the choice.

Decide whether the compact STM zoom fits your routine

Canon positions the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM as a lightweight, compact, versatile zoom. Those characteristics can matter more over a day of carrying a camera than a specification that only helps in a narrow set of situations. Its wide-to-short-telephoto range can serve as a single-lens starting point for travel, everyday outings, and family photographs, while its stated 0.5x Centre Focus Macro feature adds a close-subject option.

That close-focus feature should not be confused with a guarantee that the lens replaces a dedicated macro lens for every small subject. The cited Canon information establishes the feature, but does not provide a direct comparison to a specialist macro lens or define which subjects and working distances will suit it best. If close-up detail is your main goal, confirm the exact magnification, minimum focusing distance, and framing you need on Canon’s current page for the model before buying.

Choose this lens when portability and a broad general-purpose range are more important than a constant f/4 aperture. If you often photograph moving subjects in dim interiors, its f/7.1 maximum at the long end may be a meaningful limitation; compare the L version or a lens selected specifically for the light and shutter speeds you need.

When the constant-f/4 L zoom is worth comparing

The RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM is the more direct fit when you want the exposure aperture to stay at f/4 throughout its range. Canon describes it as a professional-quality versatile zoom and specifies Nano USM focusing and five-stop optical IS. These are useful distinctions to weigh, but the cited product information does not establish a measured head-to-head autofocus advantage, a specific size or weight difference, or independent image-quality results.

For event work, the constant aperture can simplify exposure as you change framing, and f/4 can offer more shutter-speed latitude than a narrower maximum aperture when light is limited. It remains an f/4 lens, however; it is not a substitute for deciding whether your venue and subject movement call for a wider-aperture lens. If the price, size, or weight is a deciding factor, compare the current Canon specifications and local listings rather than relying on a 2022 launch announcement.

Keep existing EF or EF-S lenses in the decision

If you own compatible EF or EF-S lenses, buying native RF glass is not the only possible route. Canon’s EOS R6 Mark II kit accessory catalog lists the EF-EOS R mount adapter and describes it as allowing EF/EF-S lens compatibility with EOS R cameras. Check the exact lens, adapter, and camera combination with Canon before you spend; the catalog entry does not establish compatibility details for every lens or accessory configuration. Canon’s R6 Mark II accessory listing

Compare the total cost and convenience of keeping a lens you already own with the cost, size, and capabilities of moving to a native RF lens. An adapter may preserve a useful lens investment, while a native lens may be a better fit if you want a particular focal range or feature. The right answer depends on the specific EF/EF-S lens and intended use, not simply on the mount name.

Photographers asking whether one RF lens can be shared between an EOS R7 and EOS R6 Mark II should verify both camera and lens documentation for the exact pairing. A Canon Community reply says RF and RF-S lenses work on EOS R cameras and notes a 1.6x crop for RF-S lenses on full-frame bodies, but that is forum guidance rather than an official manual specification. Do not use that post alone to make a purchase decision; confirm the R6 Mark II behavior and framing implications in Canon’s official documentation. Canon Community discussion, December 14, 2024

  • Wildlife: Determine how much reach your subjects require and whether you can approach them. The two 24-105mm zooms are not established here as wildlife specialists, so compare the focal range and aperture of any longer lens you consider.
  • Wide scenes: If you regularly need a view wider than 24mm, look for a lens whose official focal-length range starts wider. Do not assume a general-purpose 24-105mm will meet a specialist wide-angle need.
  • Macro and close-ups: The STM zoom has Canon’s stated 0.5x Centre Focus Macro capability, but a dedicated macro lens may be more appropriate for a primary close-up workflow. Compare magnification and focusing distance in the official specifications.
  • Video: Consider the focal range and aperture behavior you need while framing and recording. The available product details do not establish a comparative video autofocus, breathing, or stabilization test for these zooms, so verify those characteristics for the exact lens rather than inferring them from its name.

A practical buying process

  1. Write down the main subject and setting. Identify whether you most often photograph travel scenes, family, events, portraits, close details, or distant subjects, and whether the light is usually bright or dim.
  2. Choose the focal range before the lens tier. Decide whether 24-105mm covers the views you commonly need. If not, search for a lens with a range suited to your actual subjects instead of buying one of these zooms by default.
  3. Assess aperture against subject movement. If moving people or action in dim light are frequent, compare the f/4 constant aperture with the STM model’s variable f/4-7.1 range. Remember that image stabilization helps with camera shake, not motion in the scene.
  4. Set your portability and close-focus priorities. Canon characterizes the STM model as compact and lightweight and specifies 0.5x Centre Focus Macro. Check exact dimensions, weight, and other handling details on current official pages if those will determine what you carry.
  5. Account for lenses you already own. If you have EF or EF-S glass, confirm the exact adapter and lens compatibility with Canon before comparing replacement costs.
  6. Check official specifications and local prices. Use current Canon product information for the exact model and a local retailer listing for current availability and price. Canon’s November 2022 announcement contains historical launch estimates, not current prices. Canon’s 2022 announcement
  7. Buy for the limiting factor you actually encounter. Choose the compact STM zoom if portability and general-purpose coverage lead; compare the L zoom if constant f/4 and its stated features matter more. For a specialist need, evaluate a lens built around that focal range or shooting condition.

What the available specifications do not settle

Canon’s published descriptions make it possible to compare the main distinction between these zooms: variable f/4-7.1 and a compact everyday positioning versus constant f/4, Nano USM, and a five-stop optical IS specification. They do not provide a complete, consistently comparable set of current local prices, weights, dimensions, weather-sealing details, filter sizes, or independent image-quality measurements for both lenses.

Canon’s camera launch announcement is dated November 2, 2022, so its launch estimates should not be presented as what either lens or the camera costs now. Availability and pricing depend on market and date. Check current official product pages and local listings for the details that matter to your purchase, and treat manufacturer stabilization figures as specifications rather than guaranteed results for every shot.

Questions readers ask before buying

The core decision is not simply which lens has the longer feature list. Compare the photography you do most, and distinguish what Canon specifies from what still needs checking on a current product page or in a hands-on comparison. The following answers address the practical purchase questions that the available evidence supports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Canon RF lenses work on the EOS R6 Mark II?

Canon identified the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM and RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM as kit options for the R6 Mark II, making them documented general-purpose choices. For any other RF or RF-S model, check the exact lens and camera documentation; the cited forum guidance about cross-camera fit is not a substitute for an official manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose the RF 24-105mm STM or the RF 24-105mm L lens?

Choose the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM if a compact, lightweight everyday zoom and its 0.5x Centre Focus Macro capability suit your priorities. Compare the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM if you want f/4 throughout the zoom range, Nano USM, and Canon’s five-stop optical IS specification. Neither is universally best; compare local prices and the exact details that matter to you.

Does image stabilization let me photograph moving people in low light?

Not by itself. Stabilization can help reduce blur from camera movement, but it cannot freeze a moving subject. For people, performers, or animals in motion, shutter speed matters; a wider available aperture may help you use a faster shutter speed.

Can I use my EF or EF-S lenses on the R6 Mark II?

Canon’s R6 Mark II kit accessory catalog lists the EF-EOS R mount adapter and describes it as allowing EF/EF-S lens compatibility with EOS R cameras. Confirm that your exact lens and adapter combination is supported before purchase rather than assuming every configuration will work.

What does Canon’s up-to-eight-stop stabilization figure mean?

Canon reported up to eight stops of in-body image stabilization for the EOS R6 Mark II under a specific CIPA-compliant condition using the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM at 105mm. It is a manufacturer-reported figure, not a promise for every lens, focal length, or shooting situation.

Are Canon’s 2022 launch prices still current?

No price should be treated as current based on the 2022 announcement. Prices and availability change by market and date, so check current local retailer listings before deciding.

The Bottom Line

For an everyday, travel, or family setup, the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM is the compact general-purpose option Canon describes. If you value a constant f/4 aperture, Nano USM, and the stated five-stop optical IS, compare the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM. For either, verify current local price and the exact specifications you care about; if you already own EF/EF-S glass, check adapter compatibility before replacing it.
