Choose By the Gig only after confirming that your account is still eligible and obtaining its current account-specific rate. It can suit a household that uses little cellular data and mostly stays on Wi‑Fi. Choose a current unlimited option when usage is consistently high or unpredictable, when several lines share data, or when hotspot use is important. The decision is not reversible in the way many plan changes are: moving eligible legacy lines to current pricing can permanently remove access to By the Gig pricing.
Xfinity’s current options are Mobile Select and Mobile Plus. Their advertised prices, data thresholds, hotspot limits, introductory offers, internet discounts, taxes and fees all affect the final bill. Compare several months of actual cellular use with the quote shown for your account rather than relying on an old By the Gig price found in a support article.
Is Xfinity By the Gig still available?
By the Gig is now a legacy option rather than a plan generally open to new customers. Xfinity’s current support guidance limits it to customers who joined Xfinity Mobile before April 22, 2026. An eligible account may continue managing existing By the Gig lines, but eligibility should be confirmed in the account before any change is submitted.

Ask Xfinity to verify two facts: that the account joined before April 22, 2026, and that the account still has a By the Gig line or otherwise retains the legacy pricing arrangement. Do not assume that an old account automatically has the same options as another old account; account configuration and previous plan changes can matter.

What happens if you move to current pricing
To move a By the Gig line to the latest pricing, Xfinity says the line must change to Mobile Select or Mobile Plus. Once that move is made, the line cannot return to By the Gig pricing. Treat the decision as a one-way choice unless Xfinity explicitly confirms another option for your account.
Removing the last legacy line
Xfinity’s support information indicates that restoring By the Gig after all such lines are removed or changed may require contacting Xfinity, and restoration is not presented as an automatic self-service action. Before removing the last By the Gig line, ask what would happen to the account’s legacy eligibility and have the answer recorded in the order or chat transcript.
How the plans differ
By the Gig bills shared cellular data according to the terms attached to the legacy account. The current unlimited choices charge a listed monthly plan price and apply usage thresholds that affect speed or priority. “Unlimited” therefore describes the amount of data available, not necessarily unlimited full-speed or unrestricted hotspot service.

The $20 shared 1 GB and $20-per-additional-GB figures are historical examples from an older Xfinity support page. They are useful for understanding the former structure, but they are not a verified universal rate for every legacy account in October 2026. Your account’s quoted allowance, overage unit and line configuration control the calculation.

Measure the data that actually matters
Use cellular data, not total phone activity. A phone can consume many gigabytes while connected to home or work Wi‑Fi without increasing a shared cellular allowance. Conversely, a short period away from Wi‑Fi can produce a large cellular bill if video, cloud backup or hotspot traffic is active.
- Collect several recent bills. Use at least three months that represent normal work, school and travel patterns. Record the shared cellular data shown by Xfinity for every line.
- Check each line’s usage records. Separate ordinary phone data from hotspot use where the account provides that detail. The legacy guidance treats hotspot data as normal data, so do not exclude it when estimating a By the Gig bill.
- Review device usage counters. The cellular-data section of each phone can reveal which apps consumed data and whether a billing-period reset makes the device total line up with Xfinity’s dates. Device counters are a cross-check, not a replacement for the carrier’s meter.
- Mark exceptional months. Note travel, a new job, remote schooling, software testing, major downloads or a temporary hotspot session. A low average can conceal a recurring peak that makes a metered plan stressful.
- Add lines together. By the Gig’s historical structure uses a shared allowance, so compare the household total with the account’s shared terms rather than evaluating each phone in isolation.
Questions your usage record should answer
- What is the lowest, typical and highest total cellular usage in a month?
- How often does any line use hotspot, and how much of the total does it represent?
- Does one line create most of the volatility?
- Are large downloads being made on cellular because Wi‑Fi is unavailable or because settings permit them automatically?
- Would a single trip or workweek push the account into another By the Gig billing unit?
Compare the full bill, not just the headline price
Write down the amount Xfinity quotes for your eligible By the Gig account, then add the account’s data charges under its actual billing rules. Compare that result with the eligible Mobile Select and Mobile Plus totals shown when you are signed in. The comparison should include the discount attached to your internet service, taxes, regulatory charges, line charges and any one-time fees.
Why a universal break-even number is unsafe
A single “By the Gig becomes more expensive at X GB” answer would be misleading. The result changes with the account’s current base charge, whether data is shared, how a partial gigabyte is billed, the number of lines, internet-service eligibility, taxes and the pattern of hotspot use. Xfinity’s older support example used a whole-or-partial-gigabyte charge, while your account may have different legacy terms.

A safer comparison worksheet
- Enter the exact monthly By the Gig base or shared allowance charge quoted for your account.
- Enter the account’s additional-data charge and the way Xfinity rounds partial usage.
- Multiply the charge by the cellular data shown for each representative month, combining lines when the allowance is shared.
- Add taxes, regulatory charges, line fees and any other recurring account charges shown on the bill.
- Record the Mobile Select and Mobile Plus totals after the account’s real introductory period, internet discount and taxes are applied.
- Compare the highest normal month as well as the average. A plan that is cheapest in a quiet month may be expensive or inconvenient during a predictable spike.
If a representative month falls exactly on a billing boundary, ask Xfinity how it rounds that usage before relying on the result. A partial gigabyte can change the charge under the historical structure.

Understand what “unlimited” changes
Mobile Select’s 50 GB congestion treatment
Xfinity describes Mobile Select this way: “After 50 GBs, data may be slowed during network congestion.” That is a conditional network-management term, not a promise that every customer above 50 GB will always experience slower service. It does mean that a customer who regularly exceeds the threshold should consider where and when congestion matters, especially for video, navigation, file transfers and other time-sensitive use.
Hotspot thresholds
Both current plans list unlimited mobile hotspot data, but each applies a reduced-speed threshold. Select lists reduced speeds after 15 GB of hotspot use; Plus lists reduced speeds after 50 GB. Compare those thresholds with the amount of tethering used by laptops, tablets, cameras or gaming devices. A phone user who rarely tethers may see no practical difference, while remote work or travel can make the threshold decisive.
Unlimited does not remove other limits
- Taxes and fees remain separate from the advertised plan price.
- Internet-service eligibility and discount conditions can change the effective monthly amount.
- Reduced-speed thresholds can affect hotspot performance even though the data allowance is called unlimited.
- Network congestion can affect the experience described for Select after its stated data threshold.
- One-time activation or account charges can increase the first bill.
Step-by-step: choose without giving up a valuable legacy option by accident
- Check the account’s date and current plan. Confirm whether the account joined before April 22, 2026 and identify every By the Gig line.
- Ask for the current legacy quote. Request the shared allowance, base charge, additional-data charge, partial-unit rounding and any line-specific terms in writing. Do not use the historical $20 example as your quote.
- Export or record usage. Capture several months of cellular totals, hotspot amounts and unusually high months for every line.
- Request both current-plan totals. Have Xfinity show the post-introductory price for Select and Plus, the internet discount that applies to this account, taxes and recurring fees.
- Match the plan to the risk you are willing to accept. Select may fit moderate use when the 50 GB congestion condition and 15 GB hotspot threshold are acceptable. Plus may fit heavier hotspot use because its listed reduced-speed threshold is higher. By the Gig may fit consistently light use when the account-specific bill remains lower.
- Confirm reversibility before authorizing. Ask the representative to state that moving to current pricing prevents a return to By the Gig pricing. If that consequence is not acceptable, keep the legacy arrangement while you gather more usage data.
- Review the first bill after any change. Check the effective date, prorated charges, taxes, activation fees and discount. Contact Xfinity promptly if the order does not match the quote.
Which plan fits common usage patterns?
Light, stable cellular use
A household that spends nearly all of its time on reliable Wi‑Fi and uses little cellular data should first price its eligible By the Gig account. Stability matters: a low average with occasional large months can still make metered billing inconvenient. If the account’s quoted By the Gig total is lower even in the household’s normal high month, retaining it may be sensible.

Several lines with uneven use
Shared data can work well when one line uses almost nothing and another uses a predictable amount, but it can also hide the source of an overage. Add every line’s cellular total and identify the heavy user before changing plans. A current unlimited plan can make the household bill easier to forecast even if its list price is higher than a quiet month on By the Gig.

Frequent hotspot or remote work
Compare hotspot usage separately from phone data. Select’s reduced-speed point is 15 GB, while Plus’s is 50 GB. If tethering is essential for work, travel or a backup connection, evaluate the speed after the threshold rather than treating both plans as equivalent because both say unlimited.
High or unpredictable data
Current unlimited pricing is easier to budget when cellular use regularly approaches or exceeds a legacy account’s metered units, or when a family cannot predict travel and hotspot demand. Review Select’s congestion-related condition and the hotspot threshold that matches your usage before choosing between the two current plans.
Someone considering a plan change for a single month
Do not switch a legacy line merely to cover one unusual month without asking about the permanent loss of By the Gig pricing. First check whether Wi‑Fi settings, downloads or hotspot behavior caused the spike and whether the account offers another temporary solution. The migration consequence can outweigh the savings from a one-month change.
Fees and first-bill surprises to check
Xfinity’s billing guidance warns that the plan price is not the whole bill. Depending on the account, the total can include taxes, regulatory charges, activation fees and other line or account charges. Xfinity also identifies a Mobile fee that may apply to some customers who do not have other Xfinity service. Fees can change, so use the bill and current account quote rather than an old screenshot or forum post.

- Ask whether an advertised introductory price ends on a specific date and what the recurring price becomes afterward.
- Confirm that the internet-service discount is available for the exact service and account combination.
- Request the total for every line, not only the first line displayed in an online plan selector.
- Check whether a new line, activation or plan migration creates a one-time charge.
- Compare the first full month after any prorated transition, because a partial month can make the initial invoice look unlike the ongoing bill.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the historical By the Gig price as a current quote
The older $20 shared 1 GB and $20-per-additional-GB example explains how a former structure worked. It does not establish the price on every legacy account today. Obtain the account-specific quote before doing any break-even math.
Counting Wi‑Fi data as cellular data
Phone settings may show total app activity that includes Wi‑Fi. Use Xfinity’s billing-period cellular total for the bill comparison, then use device counters to find the apps responsible for unexpected cellular use.
Ignoring partial units
If the account bills an additional GB or partial GB as a full unit, a small amount over a boundary can create a full extra charge. Confirm the rounding rule rather than estimating from a decimal average.
Reading “unlimited hotspot” as unlimited speed
Select and Plus both list unlimited hotspot data, but reduced speeds begin at different usage levels. Put the threshold next to your actual tethering total before deciding.
Forgetting the one-way migration
Changing a By the Gig line to current pricing can close the path back to By the Gig pricing. Make a copy of the quote and ask the representative to confirm the consequence before clicking accept.
Comparing promotional prices with recurring prices
Use the amount after the stated introductory period for a long-term decision. Keep the promotional amount only as a first-bill reference.
A final decision checklist
- My account joined before April 22, 2026, or Xfinity has confirmed another eligibility basis.
- I know the current By the Gig base charge and additional-data rule for this account.
- I measured cellular data across several months and included hotspot use.
- I separated normal, high and exceptional months.
- I have the post-introductory totals for Mobile Select and Mobile Plus, including applicable internet discounts.
- I accounted for taxes, regulatory charges, activation fees and other account charges.
- I understand Select’s 50 GB congestion condition and both plans’ hotspot speed thresholds.
- I accept that moving to current pricing can prevent a return to By the Gig pricing.
The practical answer
Keep By the Gig when your account is eligible, cellular use is consistently light, and the verified legacy quote remains lower after all charges. Choose Mobile Select when you want a current unlimited option and your data and hotspot needs fit its thresholds. Choose Mobile Plus when the higher hotspot threshold or other included benefits justify its higher listed price. In every case, base the decision on your signed-in account’s terms and several months of real cellular use, not on a historical rate or the word unlimited alone.
