Choose the desktop that fits your workflow, then verify that your distribution supports it well on the computer you will use. Xfce is a modular, traditional desktop with a broad set of core components. LXQt is a modular desktop built with Qt, its own utilities and panel system, and project-documented support for several Wayland compositors. Neither project description proves a universal RAM or speed winner. Distribution defaults, drivers, background services, applications and hardware can change the result, so a live session or like-for-like installation on the target machine is the most reliable test.

What “lightweight” means in practice

“Lightweight” is primarily a design goal, not a portable benchmark score. The Xfce team describes Xfce as a desktop for UNIX-like systems that aims to be fast and low on system resources while remaining visually appealing and user friendly. The LXQt project calls LXQt a lightweight Qt desktop environment focused on a classic desktop with a modern look and feel. Those statements explain each project’s priorities; they do not rank one environment above the other on every computer.

A desktop session is only one part of the running system. The distribution release, enabled services, display server, graphics driver, panel plugins, file indexers, startup applications and the programs you open all affect memory use and responsiveness. A machine with a failing hard drive, unsupported graphics or too little memory for your browser and office workload can remain slow after changing desktops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a fair comparison, use the same distribution release and hardware, start equivalent sessions, allow background activity to settle, and measure both idle use and the workload you actually perform. Do not treat a distribution’s minimum installation requirement as a controlled desktop benchmark.

Quick comparison: Xfce, LXQt and other choices

Choice Documented characteristics Likely fit Verify before installing
Xfce Modular design with a window manager, desktop manager, panel, session manager, application finder, file manager and settings manager. The project emphasizes low resource use and a traditional, usable desktop. People who want a familiar panel-and-menu layout, separable components and a substantial basic toolkit. The Xfce version packaged by your distribution, compatibility of your preferred applications and whether the default panel and settings meet your workflow.
LXQt Lightweight Qt desktop with a configurable panel, file manager, settings and companion utilities. Its project page says seven Wayland compositors are supported. People who prefer Qt-based components, LXQt’s bundled tools or want to investigate its documented compositor choices. Whether your distribution packages the session and the compositor you need, and how your graphics hardware and applications behave in that session.
LXDE Listed by Fedora as a desktop option alongside other editions and Spins. Someone whose chosen distribution already provides an integrated LXDE image or package set. Release maintenance, available images and hardware support for that distribution.
MATE Listed by Fedora among its desktop choices. Users seeking a conventional desktop workflow through a distribution that integrates MATE. Current edition status, defaults and application integration.
Cinnamon, KDE Plasma or GNOME Fedora lists each among its editions or Spins, with different interfaces and feature priorities. A workflow, accessibility feature or application integration requirement may outweigh the desire for the smallest desktop session. The specific Fedora release, hardware support and whether its defaults suit an older computer.

This table records project and distribution characteristics, not measured RAM, responsiveness or battery life. No current, like-for-like benchmark covering identical versions, services and workloads establishes a universal winner.

How Xfce is organized

A modular traditional desktop

Xfce’s core is a collection of cooperating components rather than one inseparable shell. The project identifies the window manager, desktop manager, panel, session manager, application finder, file manager and settings manager as core parts. You can therefore adjust or replace individual pieces, add panel plugins and keep a conventional desktop arrangement without adopting a large, monolithic interface.

When Xfce is the better starting point

  • You want a familiar menu, panel, task list and notification area with extensive configuration.
  • You prefer to tune components separately instead of changing the entire shell.
  • Your distribution offers a mature Xfce edition and you want predictable integration with its settings and utilities.
  • You need to test a traditional workflow on older hardware but still expect a complete basic desktop toolkit.

“Modular” does not mean every application is equally light or that every distribution enables the same plugins. Check the exact defaults and remove startup items you do not use.

How LXQt is organized

Qt components and bundled utilities

LXQt is built with the Qt toolkit and combines a configurable panel, file manager, settings tools and companion applications. Its project describes a classic desktop with a modern look and feel. If your daily applications already use Qt or you prefer its configuration style, the desktop’s own utilities can make the session feel coherent.

Wayland is a capability to verify, not a guarantee

The LXQt project page states that seven Wayland compositors are supported. That is a project-level statement, not a promise that every distribution ships all seven, enables them by default or supports every graphics device equally. Before choosing LXQt for Wayland, confirm the compositor package, session entry, driver support and application behavior in your distribution’s release.

When LXQt is the better starting point

  • You specifically prefer a Qt-based desktop and its associated tools.
  • You want to experiment with the compositor options documented by the LXQt project.
  • Your distribution provides an integrated LXQt image that supports your hardware and preferred applications.
  • You value a classic layout but want to evaluate a different component ecosystem from Xfce.

What “other lightweight desktops” can mean

There is no single official category named “lightweight Linux desktop.” Fedora’s desktop editions and Spins list Xfce and LXQt alongside LXDE, Cinnamon, MATE, KDE Plasma, GNOME and other choices. The best alternative depends on the distribution image available for your hardware and the interface or application support you require.

Start with the distribution, not only the desktop name

Desktops arrive as editions, Spins or packages. Fedora’s listing demonstrates that the same distribution family can offer multiple preconfigured environments, but versions, defaults and maintenance differ by release. A desktop that looks ideal in a screenshot may have different services, themes, plugins and hardware integration in another distribution. Select a supported release first, then compare the desktop sessions it actually provides.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a larger environment when it solves a real need

A desktop with more integrated features can be the practical choice if it provides an accessibility function, display scaling, power management, input method or application integration you need. Saving a small amount of idle memory is not useful if the resulting session cannot handle your displays, suspend behavior or daily applications.

A reliable decision process

  1. Describe the priority. Write down whether your main concern is a familiar layout, Qt applications, component-level configuration, Wayland experimentation, low overhead, accessibility, battery behavior or support for a particular graphics setup.
  2. List the real workload. Include the browser tabs you normally keep, office or creative applications, video calls, media playback, external displays, printers, scanners, game controllers and any accessibility tools.
  3. Pick a supported distribution and release. Confirm that the edition or Spin is maintained and that the desktop is available for your processor architecture. Fedora explicitly lists Xfce and LXQt Spins, but availability elsewhere can differ.
  4. Check the packaged desktop. Note the Xfce or LXQt version, default applications, display server options, power-management tools and startup services. Do not assume that a project feature appears in the distribution’s build.
  5. Test on the target machine. Boot a live image when the distribution supports it, or install each candidate on separate partitions or virtual machines. Connect the displays and peripherals you actually use.
  6. Run the same workload. Open your normal applications, play the media you care about, suspend and resume, change display scaling and test sleep, networking, audio, Bluetooth and printing.
  7. Compare like for like. Use the same release, kernel updates, drivers, background services and test duration. Check idle behavior only after startup activity settles, then record responsiveness during your normal workload.
  8. Choose the session that is reliable. A slightly different idle figure is less important than stable graphics, working suspend, usable fonts and a workflow that does not require constant workarounds.

System requirements: read the distribution context

The Xfce 4.20 documentation reproduces minimum requirements for representative distributions. These figures belong to those distribution installations; they are not isolated Xfce requirements and cannot rank Xfce against LXQt.

Distribution example Requirement shown on the Xfce 4.20 page How to interpret it
Xubuntu CPU 1.0 GHz or higher with PAE; 512 MiB or more RAM for Desktop/LiveCD; 7.5 GB disk space. A stated Xubuntu Desktop/LiveCD requirement, with the original requirement date not specified on that page.
MX Linux 2 GB RAM or more and at least 10 GB free disk space. A stated MX Linux requirement, not a measurement of the Xfce session alone; the original requirement date is not specified.
Manjaro 1 GB memory, 30 GB disk and a 1 GHz processor. A stated Manjaro requirement; it describes that distribution context rather than an Xfce-wide minimum.

The wide variation shows why every number needs its distribution and installation context. Modern browsers, video conferencing, large documents and graphics applications can require substantially more memory than a desktop’s boot requirement. Check the current release documentation before installing because requirements and defaults can change.

Using a live USB without committing

The Xfce requirements page includes a live USB option for MX Linux and lists representative distributions. A USB flash drive can therefore let you explore a desktop before changing the internal disk. Treat this as an optional evaluation method, not a requirement or a recommendation for a particular drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the current image from the distribution’s official instructions and verify its written checksum when the project provides one.
  2. Write the image to a spare USB drive using the distribution’s documented method. Writing an image normally erases that drive.
  3. Use the computer’s boot menu or firmware settings to start from USB, then select the live-session option.
  4. Test Wi-Fi, audio, graphics acceleration, display outputs, suspend, printers and the applications you care about. Live media can be slower than an installed system, so judge compatibility and workflow more than raw speed.
  5. Record anything that fails and check the distribution’s hardware and session documentation before installing.

Wayland, X11 and graphics troubleshooting

If the Wayland session is missing

Confirm that your distribution packaged the compositor and session files, then install the matching packages and updates from its repositories. If the login screen offers only an X11 session, do not infer that LXQt lacks Wayland support; the distribution may not ship or enable the required components.

If graphics are unstable

  • Test the distribution’s recommended driver for your GPU and apply current updates.
  • Compare an X11 session with the available Wayland session on the same release.
  • Check fractional scaling, multi-monitor arrangement, screen locking and suspend separately.
  • Use a simpler compositor or disable optional effects if they cause tearing or flicker.

Unsupported hardware can dominate the experience. Changing desktops cannot replace a working kernel driver or repair a failing display adapter.

Common mistakes and their fixes

Using minimum requirements as a performance ranking

Mistake: concluding that the desktop with the smallest published number is fastest. Fix: treat each figure as a distribution installation requirement and perform a controlled test on the same machine.

Comparing different distributions

Mistake: comparing an Xfce Spin with an LXQt image that enables different services, kernels or applications. Fix: keep the distribution release and background configuration as similar as possible, or clearly attribute differences to the complete operating-system image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the workload

Mistake: selecting a desktop because it idles well, then discovering that the browser, video calls or display scaling are unusable. Fix: test the programs, peripherals and displays that define your day.

Assuming project features are packaged everywhere

Mistake: expecting every LXQt compositor option or every Xfce plugin in every release. Fix: inspect the distribution’s package list, session chooser and release notes before deciding.

Blaming the desktop for storage or hardware failure

Mistake: installing multiple desktops on a computer with a failing drive, bad memory or unsupported graphics. Fix: check drive health, memory stability, thermals and driver support first; otherwise every desktop comparison is misleading.

Which choice fits common situations?

You want the most familiar conventional layout

Begin with Xfce, especially when your distribution provides a well-integrated Xfce edition. Its documented core components and modular settings make it a practical starting point for a panel-and-menu workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You prefer Qt tools or want to explore Wayland options

Evaluate LXQt. Confirm the exact Qt libraries, session packages and compositor availability in your chosen distribution, then test graphics, scaling and suspend on the target hardware.

You are reviving an older computer

Do not choose by desktop label alone. Try Xfce and LXQt from live media or equivalent installations, use the same applications and check whether storage, memory and graphics drivers—not the shell—are the limiting factors.

Your distribution already offers a different integrated desktop

Consider the available LXDE, MATE, Cinnamon, KDE Plasma or GNOME edition if its defaults solve a real workflow or hardware requirement. A supported, stable image is preferable to a theoretically lighter session that lacks drivers, updates or needed features.

A concise decision checklist

  • Have you named the applications, displays and peripherals that must work?
  • Is the distribution release supported and does it package the desktop you want?
  • Did you verify the actual Xfce or LXQt session version and defaults?
  • Did you test graphics, audio, networking, suspend, scaling and printing?
  • If Wayland matters, did you confirm the compositor and driver combination?
  • Were your resource comparisons made on the same hardware, release and workload?
  • Have you ruled out failing storage, inadequate memory and unsupported drivers?

Bottom line

Pick Xfce for a modular, traditional desktop experience; pick LXQt when its Qt components and documented compositor choices match your priorities. Treat both as candidates rather than guaranteed performance winners. The distribution’s packaging and support, your applications and the target computer determine the result. A live-session trial or controlled, like-for-like installation is the safest way to make the final choice.
