Neither Xero nor MYOB is automatically better for every Australian small business. The right choice depends on the exact plan you need for payroll, inventory, bank feeds, integrations and desktop access—and on what will transfer if you switch. Compare the full ongoing cost of those requirements, not just an introductory offer or a brand-level feature list.
Start with your must-have workflows
Before comparing subscriptions, list the work the software must handle: connected bank accounts, payroll and employee numbers, stock processes, apps your business already uses, and whether you need desktop software. Then compare the specific plans that cover those needs. Both vendors’ comparison pages describe their own products, so treat their feature claims as vendor information rather than independent head-to-head test results.
- Bank feeds: Check both the number of accounts allowed and whether your financial institution’s feed is supported.
- Payroll: Compare employee capacity, charges, timesheets, leave, super and reporting—not merely whether payroll is mentioned.
- Inventory: Identify whether basic stock tracking is enough or you need more advanced inventory, order handling, locations or product attributes.
- Integrations: Check that the exact apps and data-sync workflow your business relies on are supported.
- Access: Decide whether browser and mobile access suits your work or desktop software is a requirement.
Compare plan limits, not just product names
The following distinctions are described on the vendors’ Australian pages. Plans and terms can change; confirm the live details before subscribing.

Choose according to your business profile
Banking and everyday cloud access are the priority
Xero promotes unlimited bank connections and users, while MYOB’s listed bank-account allowance depends on plan. If either limit matters, confirm it against your actual number of accounts and required feeds. Xero presents browser and mobile access; that may suit a cloud-first workflow, but it does not by itself establish that it is the better fit for your particular team.
Payroll or inventory is the deciding factor
Compare the employee capacity and payroll charges on the exact Xero tier with MYOB’s plan and add-on terms. For stock, distinguish basic tracking from advanced workflows and verify limits before committing. Neither vendor’s broad feature description establishes that every needed payroll or inventory process is included in the lowest-priced plan.
Rank #3
You rely on desktop software or specific apps
MYOB’s pricing page identifies desktop software with AccountRight tiers and describes Lite and Pro as cloud-only. If desktop operation is essential, check that the specific functions you need are available in the relevant edition. For integrations, confirm the exact app, sync behaviour and any additional fees with the vendor or app provider; the vendor pages do not establish comparative integration quality.
You have a complex setup or are changing platforms
If your accountant, bookkeeper or staff already use one platform, include the cost and disruption of retraining and changing established processes in your decision. A small difference in subscription price may matter less than payroll setup, connected apps or the effort needed to move records.

Plan a migration before you switch

That is a vendor description, not a guarantee that every record type or attachment will move as you expect. Its MYOB comparison page outlines its migration offering; Xero also discusses migration on its comparison page.

A practical way to make the final decision
- Write down your non-negotiables. Include bank accounts, payroll headcount and features, inventory workflows, integrations and desktop needs.
- Find the lowest plan on each side that meets all of them. Check plan limits and add-on fees on the vendors’ current Australian pricing pages.
- Calculate the ongoing total. Use regular subscription prices plus required add-ons; treat discounts as temporary unless the terms say otherwise.
- Verify the workflow. Ask the vendor or your accountant about uncertain feeds, integrations, payroll, inventory or migration details.
- Compare switching costs as well as subscription costs. Factor in migration checks, retraining and any records that need to stay available in the previous system.
If one product clearly meets your must-haves with a better-fitting total cost and less disruption, that is the better choice for your business. If neither stands out, get an accountant or bookkeeper familiar with your setup to check the plan and migration implications before you commit.
