Choose Classic Era if preserving the original Classic ruleset matters most; choose Season of Discovery if you want a Classic-based game with new class abilities and reworked content; choose Retail if you want the current expansion’s campaign and modern progression. The best fit depends on what you want to do, how much change you welcome, and whether your friends are playing. Population figures and group-finding prospects vary by realm and were not established by the official information reviewed for this comparison, so check the live realm options rather than choosing on an assumption about which version is busiest.
What separates the three versions?
All three are World of Warcraft, but they make different promises about which rules and content define the experience. Era keeps a Classic iteration as the destination. Season of Discovery (SoD) uses a Classic foundation while adding experimental abilities and reworked activities. Retail is the modern, expansion-based game, with the current expansion’s campaign and progression at its center.

Think of the choice as three different answers to “What should WoW be about for me right now?” Era puts the Classic iteration itself first. SoD treats Classic as a base for discovering different class possibilities and revised activities. Retail gives you the current expansion’s story and modern progression. There is no need to treat one as a required tutorial, a temporary stop, or an upgrade path to another.
Choose Classic Era for the original ruleset
Era is the straightforward choice when the existing Classic experience is the reason you want to play. Its appeal is that the original-world rules remain the point, rather than serving as a starting line for Retail or a platform for the changes made in SoD.
What “self-contained” means
Blizzard says Classic character progress stays on that iteration of WoW. Do not choose Era expecting a character to become a Retail character or to move automatically into another Classic version. Treat the character’s story as belonging to the version where you created it.
That separation can be a benefit rather than a drawback: it gives you a clear destination if you value the original ruleset on its own terms. It is a poor fit if your main goal is to carry one character’s progress into the current expansion.
Before you start, decide whether the rules are part of the attraction or something you hope a later version will change. If what you want is the Classic iteration as Blizzard presents it, Era is the cleanest match. If your curiosity is specifically about extra abilities or reworked Classic activities, SoD is the closer fit. A ruleset does not tell you whether a particular realm suits your plans. Make the realm check specific rather than asking only whether “Era is populated.” Confirm that you and your friends are selecting the same game version and region, then check realm choices that suit the faction and PvP or PvE experience you want. A general population claim cannot answer those questions, and no comparative player-count figures establish which version or realm will be easiest for you to join.

SoD is for players who want a Classic foundation but do not want to be limited to the familiar class toolkit. Its defining feature is rune discovery: Blizzard’s launch announcement says the runes add abilities unavailable in WoW Classic and can be applied or removed through Rune Engraving.
Why the runes change the decision
In Era, the original ruleset is the reason to play. In SoD, changing the available abilities is part of the appeal. That makes SoD the clearest choice if you are curious about different class tools, roles, or builds within a Classic-based game. It also makes it a less suitable choice if your priority is to keep the original rules untouched.
Rune discovery is not just a new label for Era. It changes the class toolkit, and Blizzard’s announcements describe those abilities as additions unavailable in WoW Classic. Blizzard also says runes can be applied or removed through Rune Engraving, so experimentation is built into the documented design.
That difference is useful when you are deciding whether “Classic” means a particular ruleset or a familiar starting point. If you want the original class toolkits to remain the baseline, choose Era. If you specifically want to discover added abilities and try a different arrangement of class tools, SoD is the documented option. Expect reworked activities, not just new abilities
SoD’s published features also go beyond runes. At its initial level-25 stage, Blizzard described Blackfathom Deeps as a reworked 10-player raid. Later announcements describe SoD reaching level 60 and modifying dungeons, raids, runes, class abilities, professions, and PvP. Phase 5 announcements introduced reimagined Blackwing Lair and Zul’Gurub content.

These examples show that SoD’s changes can affect both how a class plays and the activities around it. Blackfathom Deeps was described as a 10-player raid at the initial level-25 stage; later published features include a level-60 version of SoD and reimagined raid content. They are useful illustrations of the mode’s design, not a schedule of what a new player will encounter next or a guarantee that each announced feature describes the current state.
These details show the kind of Classic variation SoD offers; they do not tell you which numbered phase is current or what content is next. Blizzard’s update index includes SoD among the supported game versions and hotfix coverage, but the official information reviewed does not establish a current phase, future roadmap, or planned end date. If the current phase or next update would determine your choice, check Blizzard’s latest official announcements before you start.
In particular, do not infer a sunset date from the word “Season” or from a dated phase announcement. The update index confirms that SoD appears in supported-version and hotfix coverage, but that fact alone does not say when a phase ends, whether another is planned, or how long the mode will continue. If timing is central to your decision, look for a recent, explicit announcement rather than extrapolating from old phase details.

As of October 9, 2026, Blizzard’s hub identified Midnight as the latest expansion. Blizzard’s Midnight notes describe a new campaign, four new or reimagined zones, and progression to level 90. Those are expansion-specific details, not a promise that every future Retail expansion will use the same structure or level cap.
That makes Retail the direct choice if the current expansion’s new campaign and zones are what you want to play. The level-90 progression and four-zone details describe Midnight, not a general specification for every version of Retail over time. Retail is the most direct match for someone asking, “Should I play WoW Classic or Retail?” because the key question is whether you want a Classic iteration or the current expansion game. Choosing Retail does not mean your Classic character progresses into it; Classic progress remains on its own iteration.
