There is no universal winner among Valkey, Redis, Dragonfly, and Memcached. Choose by starting with the commands and data types your application needs, then checking persistence and recovery requirements, licensing, failover and scaling, deployment model, and the team’s ability to operate the service. A Redis-compatible API can make a candidate worth testing, but it does not prove that every command, client, script, or operational behavior will match.
This guide lays out a workload-first shortlist and a practical evaluation plan. It distinguishes Valkey from Redis offerings, treats vendor performance figures as claims rather than rankings, and explains what to validate before calling any alternative a fit.
Start with the workload, not a speed ranking
An in-memory data store may be a disposable cache, a message or streaming component, or a system expected to retain recoverable application state. Those jobs have different requirements. A candidate that is fast in one benchmark may still be a poor fit if it lacks a required command, has an unacceptable license, cannot meet recovery objectives, or needs operational work your team cannot support.
Before comparing products, answer these questions:
- What does the application use? List data structures, commands, client libraries, scripts, modules, and any higher-level capabilities such as search or time-series operations. Separate must-haves from features that would merely be convenient.
- What happens if data disappears? Decide whether all data can be rebuilt, whether some state must survive restart, and how much recent data the application can afford to lose.
- What availability and scale are required? Specify acceptable downtime, failover expectations, sharding needs, dataset size, and how those operations will be automated.
- What license and support model are acceptable? Review the license for the exact artifact and version, and determine whether the team needs a commercial support agreement or service-level commitment.
- Who will run it? Compare self-managed operations with managed offerings, including the cloud, region, backups, security controls, service terms, and available features.
- How will success be measured? Set workload-specific targets for latency percentiles, throughput, memory use, CPU, and recovery behavior instead of adopting a vendor’s headline number.
These answers create a shortlist. Only then is it useful to run equivalent workloads against the candidates that meet the hard requirements.

What the main options are—and how to shortlist them
Valkey: consider it when BSD licensing and an open project matter
Valkey is an in-memory data-structure store that can be used as a database, cache, message broker, or streaming engine. Its documentation describes data structures, Lua scripting, replication, Sentinel, Cluster, and optional persistence. It is therefore not limited to simple string caching.
Valkey is a reasonable candidate when its BSD license and open project are important to your organization, and the target release provides the commands and operating capabilities your application requires. Treat that as a reason to evaluate it, not a guarantee that moving an existing workload will be effortless. Test your actual client libraries, commands, scripts, topology, and failure procedures.
Redis: evaluate the exact offering, edition, version, and license
“Redis” can refer to distinct offerings and capabilities. Separate Redis Open Source from Redis Software or Redis Cloud when comparing features, support, and deployment. Redis’s own comparison page describes additional or integrated capabilities such as JSON, time-series, search, and vector search, as well as deployment and operations features. That is a vendor-authored, version-sensitive comparison; verify each required capability in the specific product and release under consideration rather than treating a comparison row as a universal difference.

Redis says Redis Open Source starting with version 8.0 is available under AGPLv3, with RSALv2 and SSPLv1 also available as source-available licenses. The license applicable to a particular artifact and use case is a decision for your organization’s legal process; do not infer it from a product name alone.
Dragonfly: test compatibility instead of assuming a drop-in replacement
Dragonfly documents compatibility with Redis and Memcached APIs and describes a multithreaded, shared-nothing architecture. Those points make it a candidate to test if its API and architecture look relevant to your workload. They do not establish complete behavioral equivalence. Verify the commands and edge cases you use, client behavior, persistence, replication, cluster behavior, observability, and production support before planning a migration.
Dragonfly documentation last updated August 10, 2026, states “25X performance compared to Redis.” That is a vendor performance claim, not an independently established, workload-universal result. It should not replace a matched test using your data, clients, configuration, and failure requirements.

Memcached: include it when the job is deliberately a cache
Memcached belongs in the shortlist when the application needs a cache and its simpler API and operational model are sufficient. The available comparison evidence here is not detailed enough to make a feature-by-feature Memcached assessment. AWS’s ElastiCache engine guide does include Memcached alongside Valkey and Redis OSS modes, but that does not establish that every provider offers the same engines, capabilities, or terms. Check the current documentation for the exact self-managed or managed deployment you would use.

Compare the candidates on the decisions that affect production
| Decision area | What to establish | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Data model and API | Required structures, commands, client libraries, scripts, modules, and higher-level features. | Valkey documents data structures and scripting. Redis’s feature comparison describes Redis capabilities but is vendor-authored and version-sensitive. Dragonfly documents Redis and Memcached API compatibility; test your own command set. Exact Memcached feature comparison: not stated in the available AWS engine guide. |
| Persistence and recovery | Whether data is disposable, recoverable, or part of authoritative application state; define acceptable data loss and recovery time. | Valkey documents RDB snapshots, AOF write logging, use of both, or no persistence. Choose and test a mode against your recovery objectives. |
| Licensing and support | License for the exact artifact and version, legal acceptability, and whether commercial support or an SLA is required. | Valkey describes BSD licensing. Redis says Redis Open Source from 8.0 is AGPLv3-licensed, with RSALv2 and SSPLv1 also available as source-available licenses. Validate the precise code and use case with legal counsel. |
| Availability and scaling | Failover, replication, sharding, topology, automation, and the operational work required to keep them healthy. | Valkey documents Sentinel and Cluster. Redis’s comparison advertises enterprise deployment and operations features; verify the specific Redis product or edition. |
| Compatibility and migration | Client compatibility, command semantics, scripts, modules, corner cases, and behavior during restart or failover. | Dragonfly documents API compatibility, but that does not establish compatibility for your application. Run a workload-specific test. |
| Performance and cost | Latency percentiles, throughput, memory and CPU use, and total operating cost for the same workload and service scope. | No independently comparable cross-product benchmark is established here. A vendor figure such as Dragonfly’s 25X statement is not a general ranking. |
| Deployment | Self-managed or managed service; cloud and region; version; backup, security, support, and service terms. | The Valkey project lists providers, and AWS documents an ElastiCache engine comparison. Provider availability and feature sets vary and should be checked for the intended region and service. |
Choose persistence from your recovery objectives
“In-memory” does not, by itself, tell you whether a store is volatile or durable. Valkey documents four materially different persistence choices: RDB snapshots, AOF write logging, both together, or no persistence. These are operating modes with different implications for the data you can recover. Decide which mode you need before testing, and use the same intended mode when comparing candidates.
- No persistence: Consider it when the data is genuinely disposable and can be reconstructed within your application’s recovery limits. Confirm that loss of the entire dataset after a restart is acceptable.
- RDB: Valkey describes this as point-in-time snapshots. Decide whether snapshot timing and the amount of change since the last snapshot fit your recovery-point objective.
- AOF: Valkey describes this as write logging. Evaluate it against your recovery and operational requirements rather than assuming that the label alone guarantees a particular recovery result.
- RDB and AOF together: Test combined operation if you need both documented mechanisms. Measure the impact on your own workload and verify the restore procedure.
For any mode, define how backups are produced and retained, how restoration is performed, and who owns the procedure. Run a restart and recovery exercise; having a persistence setting is not the same as proving that the service can meet a recovery target.

Make compatibility a testable claim
“Redis-compatible” or “Memcached API-compatible” is a useful screening signal, not a migration sign-off. Applications can depend on details beyond a basic command working once: response types, errors, ordering, expiration behavior, scripting, client-library assumptions, and what happens under load or during a topology change.
- Inventory usage. Collect the commands, data types, scripts, modules, client libraries, and operational features the application actually invokes. Include infrequent code paths and administrative jobs.
- Map must-haves to the target. Check the candidate’s current documentation and release for each dependency. For Redis, distinguish Redis Open Source capabilities from Redis Software or Cloud features. For Dragonfly, verify the precise API and operational behavior you rely on.
- Run application-level tests. Use the real client library and application paths, not only a generic protocol check. Test normal responses, errors, expiration, concurrency, and any script or module behavior in use.
- Exercise the topology. If the application needs replication, sharding, failover, or recovery, test those behaviors and observe what clients experience during the transition.
- Plan rollback. Establish how to route traffic back and handle writes made during the trial. A successful compatibility test does not by itself settle data migration or rollback consistency.
This process is especially important when the current system uses a feature integrated into a particular Redis distribution or product. A protocol match does not prove that the same higher-level feature, management workflow, or support commitment exists elsewhere.
Benchmark the workload you actually have
There is no supported universal performance winner among these options. A benchmark is useful only when its setup resembles the workload you plan to run and its configuration is made clear. Vendor-published numbers can help identify what a vendor chose to measure, but they cannot stand in for a matched comparison or predict every application’s result.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Keep the comparison equivalent
Use the same representative key and value sizes, dataset cardinality, read/write mix, hot-key distribution, client library, network placement, concurrency, persistence configuration, and failure scenario. Pin software versions and record the configuration for every run. Where a candidate cannot support a required test condition, record that difference rather than silently comparing unlike setups.
Record more than throughput
- Latency: Record p50, p95, and p99 under the same load. Averages alone can conceal slow requests that matter to users.
- Throughput: Measure completed work for the representative operation mix, not an isolated command that the application rarely uses.
- Resource use: Track memory and CPU alongside throughput and latency so a faster result is not separated from the resources it consumes.
- Steady state and recovery: Test normal operation and, where relevant, restart and failover behavior. Include the impact on client requests and recovery time.
- Repeatability: Run enough comparable trials to understand whether a result is stable. Keep the software version, client, data, and configuration attached to the result.
Dragonfly’s documentation-reported 25X comparison is a vendor statement, not a substitute for this process. Do not restate it as a guaranteed speedup or general result for your workload.
Decide between self-managed and managed deployment
Engine selection and deployment selection are related but separate. A technically suitable engine may not be offered in your cloud, region, or preferred service, while a managed option may change which versions, features, backups, or operational controls are available. The Valkey project lists providers, and AWS’s ElastiCache guide compares Memcached, Valkey, and Redis OSS modes. Those references establish examples, not a promise of current availability or identical feature sets across providers.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor the actual service you intend to buy or operate, check:
- engine, version, and feature availability in the needed region;
- supported topology, replication, failover, and scaling operations;
- backup, restore, and persistence options that match the recovery plan;
- security, networking, observability, and access-control facilities;
- support coverage, service commitments, and responsibilities during incidents;
- the full operating cost for the required capacity and availability design.
For a self-managed deployment, include upgrade planning, monitoring, patching, backups, and incident response in the evaluation. For a managed deployment, verify the provider’s current documentation and service terms rather than assuming that an engine’s upstream capabilities are all exposed by the service.
A practical decision path
- Remove candidates that fail a hard requirement. Eliminate an option if its license is unacceptable, a required command or feature is absent, or the deployment cannot satisfy your availability or recovery needs.
- Form a focused shortlist. Include Valkey when its BSD licensing, open project, and documented operations fit your needs; evaluate Redis when a capability or support model belongs to the specific Redis offering you require; test Dragonfly when its documented API compatibility and architecture warrant a trial; include Memcached when a cache-focused, simpler API and operational model is adequate.
- Verify exact versions and editions. Match every required feature, license, and service commitment to the artifact or managed product you would actually deploy.
- Run compatibility and performance tests. Use application-level tests and representative traffic with equivalent configurations. Include recovery or failover tests if those are production requirements.
- Compare operational fit as well as benchmark results. Account for ongoing support, service availability, team skills, migration risk, and total operating cost.
- Document the decision and exit criteria. Record the tested versions, configuration, measured results, unresolved gaps, and what would trigger a change of choice.
The right selection is the candidate that satisfies the application’s non-negotiable requirements and performs acceptably under a credible test, with a license, deployment, support model, and operating burden the organization can live with.
