Choose the store for the specific game, edition, and region—not by assuming one storefront is always cheapest or best. Compare the checkout total, refund rules, availability, and the game’s own launcher, account, DRM, and offline requirements before you buy.
What to compare before buying
- Price: Compare the same edition at each store’s checkout in your region. Regional pricing, taxes, discounts, and edition contents can change the total; there is no consistently cheapest store established here.
- Refund eligibility: Check the policy that applies to the product and purchase type. Steam and Epic describe a standard framework of roughly two weeks and under two hours for eligible games, but their conditions differ. GOG’s current terms should be checked directly.
- Availability and edition: Confirm the exact game and edition are offered in your region, and check which content each includes.
- Game requirements: A storefront’s general description does not tell you whether a particular game needs a launcher, publisher account, internet connection, or DRM. Check the product listing and publisher information.
- Client preference: GOG describes its client as optional. Choose based on what the particular game requires, rather than assuming every game on a store behaves alike.
- Promotions: Treat free claims and discounts as offers to verify at the time you shop, not as a permanent price advantage.
How the stores differ
Steam
Valve says, “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason.” That statement comes with important limits: its standard refund offer for games and software applications is for requests made within two weeks of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Valve says customers may request a refund outside those conditions, but approval is not guaranteed. DLC, in-game purchases, pre-purchases, bundles, and other products can have different rules. Epic Games Store
Epic’s policy says eligible PC and Mac purchases marked “refundable” or “self-refundable” may be refunded within 14 days of purchase if runtime is less than two hours. GOG
GOG describes itself as a curated digital distribution platform with an optional client. That is useful if you prefer not to depend on a client, but it does not establish that every game has identical DRM, launcher, account, or offline requirements. - Find the exact edition. Open the game’s listing at each store you are considering. Match editions and included content, and confirm the game is available in your region.
- Compare the final price. Check the regional checkout total for the same edition. Include any applicable taxes or fees shown before payment, and compare current discounts rather than assuming a store is usually cheaper.
- Read the refund conditions. For Steam, check the purchase date and playtime against the standard two-week and under-two-hours framework. For Epic, verify the “refundable” or “self-refundable” label and its 14-day, under-two-hours rule for eligible PC and Mac purchases. For GOG, consult its current policy directly.
- Check how the game runs. Look for DRM, required launchers or publisher accounts, internet requirements, and offline-play details in the product listing and publisher notes. Do not infer these details from the storefront alone.
- Account for practical preferences. If you prefer an optional client, GOG’s store description may fit that preference—but still verify the game’s own requirements. Also consider whether an active promotion or a claimed free game changes your decision today.
Which should you choose?
Choose GOG when the game is available there and its verified requirements suit your preference for an optional client. Choose Steam or Epic when that store has the edition, price, refund terms, or game requirements that better fit your purchase. For any of the three, the deciding facts are the specific game’s current listing and your regional checkout—not a permanent storefront ranking.
