The right handheld depends on the games you play, the resolution you want to see, and whether you are willing to trade battery life and simplicity for more power and Windows flexibility. Steam Deck OLED targets an 800p, low-power SteamOS experience. The 2024 ROG Ally X targets a 1080p, 120 Hz Windows experience and offers AMD upscaling and frame-generation features. Neither is a universal winner: upscaling support, image quality and frame pacing vary by game.

Start with the screen and the workload

Upscaling does not remove the need to choose a display target. A handheld can render a game internally at a lower resolution, then reconstruct an image for its panel. The number of pixels the game renders, the reconstruction method and the final display resolution all affect performance and clarity.

Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED with a 1280 × 800 HDR OLED panel that can run at up to 90 Hz. Its AMD APU is specified for a 4–15 W power range, with 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory and a 50 Wh battery. Valve states 3–12 hours of gameplay, depending on the content and how the device is being used; that is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for a particular game. See the Steam Deck OLED technical specifications and Valve’s Steam Deck OLED overview.

ASUS lists the 2024 ROG Ally X (model RC72LA) with a 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz display, 24 GB of memory and a Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor with RDNA 3 graphics. ASUS’s published game examples use Turbo mode at 30 W while connected to AC power. Those are test conditions, not a promise that the same results occur on battery power. The product page also lists Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) and AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF). Review the ROG Ally X product and test page for the model’s stated configuration.

At native resolution, the Ally X asks a game to produce 2,073,600 pixels per frame, while an 800p Steam Deck frame is 1,024,000 pixels. Rendering below either native target can reduce the graphics workload, but the result still depends on the engine, quality preset, upscaler and scene. Pixel counts alone cannot predict a game’s frame rate.

Understand what “upscaling performance” actually means

Game-integrated upscaling

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is normally selected inside a supported game’s graphics or video menu. AMD’s guidance says to enable the supported FSR version and then choose an upscaling-quality preset in that same menu: “At this point in time, you can launch your game and turn on AMD FSR 3.1 in the in-game graphics or video options settings, if it is not already enabled, and then optionally set the desired FSR upscaling quality preset from within the in-game graphics or video options menu.” This is guidance for games that implement FSR, not evidence that every game supports it. Details and current technology information are on AMD’s FSR technology page.

A game’s Quality, Balanced or Performance preset may use a different internal resolution and sharpening behavior. Preset names are therefore not interchangeable across games. Check the rendered image in motion, especially foliage, hair, thin geometry, text and distant objects.

Driver-level Radeon Super Resolution

ASUS advertises RSR on the Ally X and gives examples that identify gameplay at 720p with RSR for selected titles. RSR is a driver-level option rather than the game’s own integrated FSR implementation. A game must be configured in a way that allows the driver to upscale; the exact toggle and supported display modes can change with ASUS and AMD software updates. Confirm the current control-panel label and the game’s window or display mode before treating RSR as active.

Frame generation is a separate feature

ASUS also lists AMD Fluid Motion Frames. Frame generation creates additional interpolated frames between traditionally rendered frames. It is not the same as rendering fewer pixels and upscaling them. A generated-frame counter can make motion appear smoother, but it does not mean the game is producing the same number of fully rendered frames, and the input-response behavior can differ from native rendering. Evaluate camera movement, controls and frame pacing rather than accepting a larger counter as proof of better performance.

Choose a target that fits each game

For Steam Deck OLED

Begin with the panel’s 1280 × 800 target. If a game is demanding, reduce its internal render resolution or select an integrated upscaler where the title provides one. A lower target can be sensible because the display itself is 800p; forcing a 1080p output does not make the panel sharper and may add unnecessary work. SteamOS 3 and the OLED display favor a straightforward, console-like setup for a Steam library, but support remains title-specific.

For ROG Ally X

Decide whether you value native 1080p detail or a lower render resolution reconstructed to the 1080p panel. The 120 Hz display can show high-refresh output, but a demanding game may need a lower internal resolution, a reduced graphics preset or a lower refresh target to maintain consistent frame pacing. ASUS’s 30 W Turbo figures were obtained while plugged in; do not use them as a battery-mode expectation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For either device

Pick a repeatable goal before changing settings: for example, stable frame pacing at the panel’s refresh target, or the clearest image that stays above a minimum frame rate. Compare the same goal on both devices. “Performance” in one game and “Quality” in another are not meaningful cross-device labels.

A repeatable comparison method

Use this checklist for two or more games you actually play. It prevents a vendor feature list or an unmatched power setting from becoming a false ranking.

  1. Record the exact model. Write “Steam Deck OLED,” “ROG Ally X (2024, RC72LA),” “original ROG Ally,” or the complete name of another model. Similar names can hide different memory, battery and power behavior.
  2. Record the software state. Note the operating-system build, game version, graphics driver and BIOS or firmware version. ASUS cautions that its results can vary with configuration and newer drivers.
  3. Choose one scene. Use the same save, route, match or benchmark sequence. Repeat it long enough to expose traversal stutter and shader compilation rather than judging a menu or a quiet scene.
  4. Set the output and render resolution separately. Write down the panel/output resolution, the game’s internal resolution if shown, and whether the game is using integrated FSR, another in-game scaler, RSR or no upscaling.
  5. Write the quality preset down. Include individual changes such as shadows, reflections, textures and ray tracing. A “low” preset on one title is not equivalent to “low” on another.
  6. Record frame generation explicitly. Mark AFMF or any in-game frame-generation option as on or off. Never combine a generated-frame result with a native-rendering result in the same comparison.
  7. Match power conditions. Record the device’s power mode and whether it is on battery or connected to the charger. A Steam Deck test at a battery-limited setting cannot be fairly ranked against the Ally X at ASUS’s 30 W AC Turbo condition.
  8. Compare more than an average. Note average frame rate, lows or visible hitching, frame-time consistency, input feel, image stability and fan or battery behavior. If you cannot measure all of these, describe the limitation instead of implying a complete performance verdict.
Field to record Example entry Why it matters
Device and model year ROG Ally X, 2024, RC72LA Prevents similarly named handhelds being treated as identical
Output resolution and refresh 1920 × 1080 at 120 Hz Defines the display target
Render resolution/upscaler 720p render, RSR on; or game-integrated FSR Quality Separates workload from final output
Graphics preset Medium, with ray tracing off Controls the visual workload
Power and connection 30 W Turbo, AC connected Power changes sustained performance
Frame generation AFMF off Keeps rendered and generated frames distinct
Scene and software Same save; identical game, OS, driver and BIOS versions Makes the comparison repeatable

How to configure upscaling without guessing

When the game supports FSR

  1. Open the game’s Graphics, Display or Video options.
  2. Set the output resolution appropriate to the handheld panel: 1280 × 800 for a Steam Deck OLED target, or 1920 × 1080 for the Ally X target when the game supports it.
  3. Enable the supported FSR version or upscaling option.
  4. Select one quality preset and leave other settings unchanged for the first comparison.
  5. Load the same scene and inspect moving details, text and distant edges. Then check frame pacing and controls before trying a more aggressive preset.

The controls and available presets are supplied by the game. If FSR is absent, do not assume that a system toggle can add the same implementation or quality.

When using RSR on an Ally model

  1. Confirm in the current ASUS/AMD graphics software that RSR is available and enabled.
  2. Set the game to a lower supported render or display mode, such as the 720p configuration used in ASUS’s selected examples, rather than claiming that RSR is active at every resolution.
  3. Run the game in the mode required by the current driver documentation and verify visually that the output is being scaled to the panel.
  4. Record the exact game resolution, RSR state, driver version and power mode so another test can reproduce it.

Do not enable a game’s FSR and driver-level RSR at the same time unless the game and current driver documentation explicitly support that arrangement; two scaling stages can produce an image that is difficult to evaluate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When considering frame generation

  1. First establish a stable base with frame generation disabled.
  2. Enable AFMF or the game’s frame-generation feature separately.
  3. Repeat the same scene and note perceived smoothness, latency, artifacts and frame pacing.
  4. Report both the base rendered result and the generated-frame result. Label them as different operating modes.

Which handheld profile suits which buyer?

Choose Steam Deck OLED when the 800p target and SteamOS fit your priorities

  • You primarily use a Steam library and want SteamOS 3 rather than a Windows desktop environment.
  • You prefer a 1280 × 800 OLED display and are comfortable tuning demanding games for that target.
  • You value a documented 4–15 W APU range and a 50 Wh battery whose stated 3–12-hour runtime varies with content.
  • You would rather avoid rendering at 1080p when the panel itself is 800p.

These are fit judgments based on Valve’s documented hardware and software characteristics, not a claim that every game runs faster on Steam Deck.

Choose ROG Ally X when Windows and 1080p flexibility matter

  • You need Windows 11 compatibility for a broad PC-game library, launchers or software outside SteamOS.
  • You want a 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz screen and are prepared to lower the internal render resolution when a game cannot sustain native 1080p.
  • You want to test ASUS-advertised RSR and AFMF options, while keeping their separate effects clear.
  • You can accept that the strongest published ASUS examples use 30 W Turbo on AC and should not be treated as battery-mode results.

The Ally X’s 24 GB memory and 1 TB storage are ASUS-stated configuration details; they do not by themselves establish a frame-rate advantage in a specific title.

Consider the original ROG Ally only as its own model

ASUS’s 2023 announcement says both Z1 models support FSR and RSR and identifies a 1080p, 120 Hz display for the original Ally. Do not transfer the Ally X’s memory, battery, sustained-power behavior or 30 W test conditions to the original device. Treat its processor variant, firmware and available memory as separate entries in your comparison.

Common comparison mistakes and how to correct them

Comparing native 1080p with 800p and calling it an upscaling result

A 1080p panel and an 800p panel have different native workloads. State both output and internal render resolutions, then compare equivalent visual goals rather than only the panel’s maximum number.

Using a plugged-in 30 W result as a handheld battery claim

Label ASUS’s cited Ally X tests as Turbo, AC-connected, 30 W conditions. Record the Steam Deck power setting and battery state separately. If the conditions differ, report two operating modes instead of one ranking.

Treating FSR as universal

FSR appears only when a title implements and exposes it. If a menu lacks the option, say so and test another supported scaler or a lower native render resolution. Do not promise a fixed percentage gain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Counting generated frames as rendered frames

Keep AFMF or other frame generation in its own column. Report responsiveness and artifacts as well as any displayed frame counter.

Assuming a feature name guarantees quality

RSR, FSR and AFMF describe technologies, not a guaranteed image or control experience in every game. Inspect fine detail and frame pacing in the actual title.

Transferring settings between models

Original ROG Ally, Ally X and the two Xbox-branded models have different processors, memory configurations and software generations. Write the complete model and year every time.

Accessories and practical constraints

Storage and ergonomics affect whether a handheld is pleasant to use, but they do not make an upscaler faster. Steam Deck supports microSD expansion and USB-C external connectivity. Microsoft lists microSD cards, a gaming charger dock and a case among accessories for the Xbox-branded models. Check exact compatibility for the model you own. A dock, charger, case or controller may solve a practical problem without changing the game’s render workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also decide where you will play. Higher power modes can increase fan noise and battery drain; lower render resolutions may preserve battery at the cost of fine detail. A handheld that reaches a target only while connected to AC may be the wrong fit for long portable sessions, even if its plugged-in test looks impressive.

A concise buying decision

  1. List three demanding games you genuinely play.
  2. For each game, check whether it exposes FSR or another integrated upscaler; do not assume support from the GPU brand.
  3. Choose the display target: Steam Deck OLED’s 1280 × 800 or a 1080p handheld’s 1920 × 1080.
  4. Decide whether your priority is SteamOS simplicity and lower-power play, or Windows flexibility, a 120 Hz 1080p panel and additional Radeon options.
  5. Test one repeatable scene with upscaling off, then with one quality preset, and finally with frame generation separately if available.
  6. Make the purchase decision from the mode you will actually use: battery or AC, quiet or high-power, native or reconstructed image.

The available specifications establish different design targets, not a universal performance champion. Steam Deck OLED is a strong fit for an 800p SteamOS workflow and flexible low-power operation. The ROG Ally X is a strong fit for Windows users who want a 1080p/120 Hz display and ASUS-advertised RSR and AFMF options. Newer ROG Xbox Ally models require their own model-specific checks. Your games, settings and power conditions determine which one is better for upscaling in practice.
