There is no universal winner: choose using the offers available at your exact address, their full terms, and what your property can support. Check local fixed providers and Starlink availability first; then compare recurring and one-time costs, typical performance, data rules, installation, and cancellation terms. Starlink can be a practical option when fixed alternatives do not meet your needs and the property has a suitable view of the sky. A local provider may be a better fit when its address-specific offer suits your budget and household.

Start with your address, not the technology label

“Local ISP” does not automatically mean fiber, just as “satellite” does not by itself tell you what service will be like at a particular home. Fixed broadband can include fiber, cable, DSL, fixed wireless, and satellite. The services and terms available at one address may differ from those a few streets away, and even two households considering Starlink may see different plan options.

For U.S. addresses, the Federal Communications Commission’s National Broadband Map is a useful way to identify providers reporting fixed service, the technologies they report, and advertised speeds. The FCC says fixed providers submit location-level availability data twice each year; its map was updated in 2025. Treat it as a shortlist, not a promise of service quality or affordability: the map does not establish the performance you will experience or whether an offer fits your budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Starlink’s own address-specific availability as well. Its plans, offers, prices, and coverage vary by region and address, and plan tiers are not offered everywhere. If you live outside the United States, use your national regulator’s availability information and the disclosures provided by the services in your area; the FCC map is U.S.-specific.

Availability information is a starting point, not the final order check. A provider appearing for a location on the FCC map does not establish that a particular plan, installation, or price is available to you. Confirm orderability directly with the provider and use the offer shown for the precise service address. Keep a record of the plan and terms you are comparing; broad coverage descriptions and a neighbor’s plan are not substitutes for your own address-level offer.

Compare the offers on the same terms

Once you have a shortlist, use the current offer for your address rather than a generic technology comparison. In the United States, each provider’s FCC Broadband Facts label is a practical source for key offer details. Read the label alongside the provider’s current service terms, because the final cost and conditions may also depend on installation, equipment, taxes, discounts, or other charges.

Comparison point What to establish for each offer Why it matters
Total cost Regular monthly price, any introductory price and its duration, recurring fees, one-time charges, taxes, and discounts. Check whether equipment or installation adds a separate cost. An advertised starting price may not reflect what you will pay after an introductory period or after fees are included.
Download and upload Typical download and upload speeds on the provider’s Broadband Facts label, or the relevant provider disclosures where that label is not applicable. Download is only part of the picture. Upload performance can matter for sending large files, video calls, and other activities that send data from your home.
Latency Typical latency disclosed for the offer, if available. Latency describes delay, which can affect how responsive some real-time uses feel. Do not treat a download-speed figure as a substitute.
Data and network management Included data, overage charges or speed reductions, and relevant network-management disclosures. “Unlimited” alone does not describe how a provider handles congestion or peak use.
Equipment and installation Required equipment, equipment charges, installation requirements, and any constraints on where equipment can be placed. A service that looks suitable on paper may not be practical at the property or within the household’s budget.
Contract and cancellation Contract length, early termination charges, and other termination conditions. These terms affect the cost and flexibility of switching if the service does not meet your needs.
Privacy Provider privacy information and any relevant disclosures. Review this alongside the service terms if privacy practices are important to your decision.

The Broadband Facts label represents several of these fields, including monthly and introductory prices, data allowances, fees, typical download and upload speeds, latency, and relevant contract or termination charges. Use labels to compare actual offers, not to assume that all providers using one technology have the same terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare each plan on a consistent basis. For price, keep the introductory amount and its duration separate from the regular monthly amount, and note one-time costs separately from recurring ones. A discount may affect the total only under stated conditions, so check what those conditions are rather than assuming it will apply throughout your service. Include taxes and equipment or installation costs where applicable. If a label and service page appear to differ, read the current terms or ask the provider which conditions apply to your address.

For performance, look for typical figures rather than comparing one provider’s typical speeds with another provider’s advertised maximum. A download figure alone does not describe uploads or latency, and none of these disclosures guarantees the experience at a specific home. If the label does not give a figure you need, ask what address-specific or plan-specific information the provider can provide. Avoid treating a broad technology category as a substitute for offer details.

What Starlink’s published performance figures do—and do not—tell you

Starlink’s specifications say users typically experience downloads between 25 and 220 Mbps, with a majority experiencing more than 100 Mbps. The same specifications list typical uploads of 5–20 Mbps and land latency of 25–60 ms. These are Starlink-published typical figures, not guaranteed results for your home and not a head-to-head comparison with a local provider. Starlink says actual performance varies by location, time of day, and plan priority; customers in some remote locations may experience higher latency.

These figures can help you decide what to investigate, but they cannot answer whether Starlink will outperform a particular local offer. Compare them with the address-specific information and terms for each alternative. Consider the kinds of work and activities in your household, how many people use the connection at the same time, and whether upload response or latency matters as much as downloads. If the provider’s published typical figures do not answer a question that matters to you, ask the provider what information is available rather than treating a maximum or headline number as a guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think through what “good enough” means for your household before choosing. If several people may be online at once, consider whether the plan’s typical figures and terms appear suitable for that pattern of use; do not assume a single headline download number settles the question. If your use involves sending files or making video calls, pay attention to upload performance as well as download. If responsiveness matters, compare latency disclosures too. The available figures can frame the comparison, but only the provider can clarify the terms of its particular plan, and actual Starlink performance can vary with time, location, and priority.

Unlimited data is not the same as unchanged service at every hour

Starlink’s Residential guidance says all Residential plans include unlimited data. Its fair-use policy also says congestion and peak usage may reduce performance, and its specifications warn that performance varies. An unlimited allowance therefore should not be read as a promise of identical speeds or priority at every time of day. Check the current policy and the terms for the specific plan offered at your address.

Make the same distinction when reviewing a local provider: a data allowance and the provider’s network-management disclosures are related but separate parts of the offer. Check for an allowance, possible overage charges, or speed reductions, then read relevant management terms. A service described as unlimited still needs to be evaluated for what its terms say about performance and network management. Do not compare only the amount of data included while overlooking how the service may be managed during busy periods.

Plan names and availability can change

Starlink’s Residential information describes a top Residential Max tier and 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps tiers in select markets. Those tiers are not a universal menu: availability, plan names, prices, and specifications can vary by region and address and can change. Check the offer presented for your service address rather than assuming that a plan mentioned in general information is available to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan names are less useful than the actual terms attached to the plan offered where you live. Confirm its price, included data, performance expectations, and any other relevant conditions at the time you are ready to order. A plan name seen in general product information does not confirm eligibility, availability, or the exact features in your market.

Check whether the property can support Starlink

Starlink requires an unobstructed view of the sky. Trees, buildings, or other obstructions at the installation location can make feasibility an issue, so consider the actual place where equipment could be mounted before purchasing a kit or committing to service. Starlink points customers to its app to evaluate a location.

The Starlink kit is described as including a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount. Confirm the current equipment and any associated charges in the offer for your address. The fact that a kit includes a mount does not establish that a particular roof, wall, or other location is suitable; installation feasibility depends on the property and the clear sky view required by the service.

  1. Check address availability. Enter the property address in Starlink’s availability flow and review the plans and terms actually offered there.
  2. Assess the proposed location. Use the Starlink app to evaluate whether there is an unobstructed sky view where the terminal could be placed.
  3. Consider installation constraints. Identify whether the proposed placement and mounting approach are practical at the property, and confirm any installation requirements or costs before ordering.
  4. Compare the equipment-inclusive cost. Add equipment and installation charges, if applicable, to the service cost you are comparing with local offers.

Do not treat equipment as an afterthought. The terminal, router, power supply, and mount are part of the described Starlink kit, but the current offer determines what equipment is included and what charges apply. Check those terms before ordering, especially if you are comparing a service with separate equipment or installation charges against one that presents a different cost structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app’s location assessment can help evaluate sky visibility; it does not replace checking the rest of the installation conditions. Consider whether the possible placement is practical at your property and verify any relevant mounting or installation requirements. If there is no workable location with the required unobstructed view, that is a substantial feasibility concern regardless of the plan’s listed speed or price.

Use a decision table for the offers at your home

There is no evidence-based universal winner between Starlink and local ISPs. The useful comparison is the one that includes each service you can actually order. This table separates established Starlink disclosures from details that must be checked for the particular local offer.

Decision factor Starlink Local fixed ISP What to decide
Availability Check the service address; plans and offers vary by region and address. For U.S. addresses, the FCC map shows providers reporting fixed availability, but the map is not a service-quality test. Confirm directly that the service can be ordered at the property.
Speed and latency Starlink publishes typical figures, with performance varying by location, time, and plan priority. Address-specific typical performance: not stated here; consult the provider’s Broadband Facts label and terms. Compare typical download, upload, and latency disclosures for the offers, not just maximum or advertised speeds.
Price and fees Address-specific price and equipment or other charges: not stated here; check the offer presented for your location. Address-specific price and fees: not stated here; check the current label and provider terms. Compare regular cost, promotional terms, recurring charges, one-time costs, and equipment or installation.
Data and busy periods Residential plans include unlimited data according to Starlink’s current guidance; its fair-use policy says congestion and peak use may reduce performance. Allowance and network-management terms: not stated here; review the offer’s label and disclosures. Understand both data limits and how the provider describes network management.
Installation Requires an unobstructed sky view; the app can help assess a location. Installation needs depend on the technology and provider; check the address-specific offer. Choose an option that can be installed practically at the property.
Contract and cancellation Terms for the address-specific offer: check Starlink’s current terms. Contract and termination charges: check the current label and provider terms. Compare the actual commitment and cancellation conditions before ordering.

Use the same decision factors for every alternative, whether it is fiber, cable, DSL, fixed wireless, or another fixed service. The FCC map can help reveal that the local choice is not necessarily a single wired provider; direct provider checks establish which actual offer can be ordered. A technology label can help describe the service, but it cannot answer whether its total cost, performance disclosures, installation conditions, and cancellation terms suit your household.

Choose based on the household’s priorities

A local fixed offer may suit you better when its terms work

If an available provider’s actual offer fits your budget, performance needs, installation situation, and contract preferences, that can make it the more suitable choice for your home. The provider’s technology label alone is not enough to make that call. Compare its typical speeds and latency, charges, and data and cancellation terms with Starlink’s address-specific offer before deciding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Local” is not a performance guarantee either. A fixed provider’s terms and disclosures are the relevant basis for comparison, not assumptions about what a particular technology always delivers. Review typical uploads as well as downloads, and make sure the regular price, equipment or installation charges, data policy, and termination terms fit your circumstances. A favorable offer on one axis may not be favorable on another, so rank what matters most before choosing.

Starlink may be useful when fixed alternatives fall short

If the fixed services you can order do not meet the household’s needs, Starlink may provide another option—provided the address is eligible and a suitable unobstructed installation location is available. Evaluate that option using its current local plan terms, expected performance disclosures, equipment and installation costs, and fair-use policy. The published figures are not proof that it will be faster or more reliable than a particular local alternative.

That makes the site check and address check especially important: neither a general coverage impression nor a published typical speed confirms a suitable offer and installation at your home. Compare the plan shown for your address with the actual fixed alternatives, and decide whether its terms satisfy your priorities. If a fixed service is available but unsuitable for your needs, explain which requirement it misses in your comparison rather than assuming that Starlink automatically resolves it.

When neither offer is an obvious choice

Write down the requirements that matter most—for example, acceptable total cost, adequate upload performance, latency, a workable installation, or flexible cancellation—and rank them. Then compare each available offer against those requirements. If key information is absent from a label or offer page, contact the provider for clarification before using an assumption to break a close decision.

It can help to separate deal-breakers from preferences. A property without a feasible Starlink sky view may rule out that option for practical purposes; a contract or cancellation condition may matter more if you want flexibility. By contrast, differences in a headline speed may be less decisive if both offers appear to meet your household’s requirements. Keep the comparison tied to the documented terms and your own priorities rather than trying to identify a winner for every home.

A practical ordering checklist

  1. List the services at the exact address. Use the FCC National Broadband Map as a U.S. starting point for fixed-provider availability and reported technologies, then confirm orderability with providers. Check Starlink availability separately.
  2. Save the current offer details. Record the plan name, regular and introductory price terms, typical speeds and latency, data rules, charges, equipment, installation requirements, and cancellation terms. Offers can change, so use the information available when you are ready to order.
  3. Calculate the cost you will actually compare. Include recurring fees and any relevant taxes, one-time charges, equipment, installation, and discounts. Keep introductory pricing separate from the regular price so the two are not confused.
  4. Match performance to your use. Compare typical upload and download speeds and latency, then consider the household’s activities and simultaneous use. Do not substitute a plan maximum or a technology stereotype for the provider’s offer-specific disclosures.
  5. Check feasibility before commitment. For Starlink, assess the sky view with the app and review equipment and installation implications. For a fixed provider, confirm its installation requirements for your property.
  6. Review data, network management, and exit terms. Check allowances, overage or speed-reduction policies, relevant management disclosures, contract duration, and termination charges.
  7. Choose the offer that best meets your ranked needs. If a material term remains unclear, ask the provider before ordering rather than assuming two services have equivalent terms.

For a quick final check, make sure you have not compared a promotional price from one provider with another provider’s regular price, a maximum speed with a typical speed, or unlimited data with a promise of unchanging performance. Confirm the exact address, note installation and equipment costs, and review the conditions for ending service. If you cannot verify an important item, pause to ask the provider rather than filling the gap with a general assumption.

What the available evidence cannot decide for you

Provider specifications and regulatory comparison tools help identify what to compare, but they do not establish actual service performance at your home or determine which offer is affordable for you. No independent head-to-head measurement for a particular address is established here, and no location-specific recommendation can be made without the address and current local offers. Treat advertised and typical figures as disclosures to compare, not as a personal guarantee or a substitute for checking the terms in force when you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check whether Starlink or a local ISP is available at my address?

Enter the exact address in Starlink’s availability flow and check local providers directly. In the United States, the FCC National Broadband Map can help identify providers reporting fixed availability, technologies, and advertised speeds, but the FCC says the map is not a service-quality or affordability test. Confirm orderability and current terms with each provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What speeds does Starlink say Residential users typically get?

Starlink’s specifications list typical downloads of 25–220 Mbps, with a majority of users experiencing over 100 Mbps, typical uploads of 5–20 Mbps, and land latency of 25–60 ms. These are provider-published typical figures, not guaranteed results or a comparison with a particular local ISP. Performance varies by location, time, and plan priority.

Does Starlink Residential include unlimited data?

Starlink’s current Residential guidance says all Residential plans include unlimited data. Its fair-use policy says congestion and peak usage may reduce performance, so unlimited data should not be taken to mean the service performs identically at every hour. Check the terms for the plan offered at your address.

What should I compare besides the monthly price?

Compare the regular price after any introductory period, recurring fees, taxes, one-time charges, discounts, equipment and installation costs, typical download and upload speeds, latency, data rules, network-management disclosures, contract length, and cancellation or termination charges. In the United States, the FCC Broadband Facts label includes many of these offer details; read it with the provider’s current terms.

Does Starlink need a clear view of the sky?

Yes. Starlink says its service requires an unobstructed view of the sky and points customers to the Starlink app to evaluate a proposed location. Check that a practical mounting location is available before buying equipment or committing to service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Starlink faster than a local internet provider?

There is no universal answer from the published figures alone. Starlink’s specifications are not an independent head-to-head test, and local offers vary by address and technology. Compare the typical speeds, uploads, latency, costs, data rules, and installation and cancellation terms for the specific services you can order.

The Bottom Line

Choose between Starlink and a local ISP by comparing the offers available at your exact address, not by assuming one technology is always better. Verify availability, full ongoing and one-time costs, typical download and upload speeds, latency, data and network-management terms, installation feasibility, and cancellation conditions. Starlink requires an unobstructed sky view and publishes typical figures rather than guaranteed results; local fixed offers vary too. The best fit is the one whose current terms and practical requirements match your household.
