Choose the device that matches the thing you want to control: a smart bulb for bulb-level dimming, color, and scenes; a smart switch for familiar wall control of hardwired lights; or a smart plug for simple on/off scheduling of a compatible plug-in lamp or appliance. The right choice depends on the control features you need, your wiring, how people use the room, the connected load, and whether the device must work when you are away.
These categories are not interchangeable. A bulb can add color effects that a switch cannot, a switch keeps a wall button available for everyone in the room, and a plug can automate a lamp without opening an electrical box. Use the model-specific installation and compatibility information below before purchasing.
The three options at a glance
| Device | Controls | Best fit | Installation | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart bulb | One bulb or fixture socket; app control, schedules, dimming, scenes, and sometimes tunable white or color | A lamp or fixture where lighting effects matter | Screw in a compatible bulb and pair it with the required app or platform | An ordinary wall switch can cut power, leaving the bulb unable to respond |
| Smart switch | Every light on its wired circuit, with physical wall control plus app or voice control when supported | Ceiling lights or groups of lights controlled from one wall location | Replace the in-wall switch; wiring and box requirements are model-specific | It does not automatically provide bulb-level color or other bulb features |
| Smart plug | Basic power control and scheduling for one compatible plug-in load | A table lamp or other device that turns on when power is supplied | Insert the plug between the outlet and the device | The load must stay within the plug’s current and wattage rating, and some electronics do not restart as expected |
There is no universal winner or cost ranking. Compare the price of the device with the number of bulbs, switches, or lamps you actually need to automate, and include any hub or additional equipment required by the chosen model.

Smart bulbs: lighting at the socket
A smart bulb replaces a conventional bulb in a compatible lamp or fixture. Its electronics are inside the bulb, so it can expose functions such as app-based dimming, timed schedules, scenes, tunable white color temperature, or full-color effects. The exact feature set varies by model; a bulb advertised as dimmable may not offer color control, and a color bulb may require a particular app, bridge, or wireless protocol.

Because the bulb needs power to receive commands, the wall switch must normally remain on. If someone turns that switch off, the bulb is electrically offline and cannot respond to an app, voice command, or schedule until power is restored. Plan how household members will control the light: leave the existing switch on and use an app, install a compatible wireless button, or use a product designed to provide a physical control that does not cut power.
Smart switches: lighting at the circuit
A smart switch replaces a conventional wall switch and controls the lights connected to that switch’s wired circuit. Everyone can still press the wall control, while an app, automation, or voice assistant may provide remote operation if the model supports it. This is usually the more natural arrangement for a ceiling fixture or a room in which people expect a wall button to work immediately.
A switch cannot turn a standard bulb into a color lamp. It controls the circuit’s power and, on dimmer models, the electrical dimming signal. If you want color scenes, the color-capable electronics need to be in the bulbs or fixture. Combining a smart switch with smart bulbs requires careful compatibility checking because cutting or modulating power can make the bulbs unavailable or cause erratic behavior.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSmart plugs: power at the outlet
A smart plug sits between an outlet and a plug-in device. Its usual functions are remote on/off control and schedules; some products add energy monitoring or other automations. It is useful when the lamp has no smart bulb, when you want to avoid in-wall work, or when a device should follow a simple timetable.
The device connected to the plug must remain within the plug’s stated current and wattage limits. Do not assume a plug can safely operate any power strip, extension cord, heater, motor, or high-draw appliance. TP-Link’s guidance for its smart plugs specifically advises against connecting a power strip or extension cord to the plug. Follow the exact model’s instructions rather than applying one plug’s rating to another.
Start with the feature you need
Choose a smart bulb for color, tunable white, or bulb-level scenes
Select a smart bulb when each lamp or socket needs independent control, color changes, tunable white, or scenes that combine different brightness and colors. It is also the least disruptive option when replacing a wall switch is impractical. You can automate one bulb without changing the rest of the circuit.
Count the sockets you intend to automate. A fixture with four bulbs may require four individually addressable bulbs if you want separate control, or four matching bulbs grouped in software if one scene should operate them together. The product’s grouping behavior and maximum device count are model-specific, so verify them before buying multiple units.

Choose a smart switch for dependable wall operation
A smart switch is usually preferable when a room’s main requirement is reliable wall control of a ceiling fixture or a group of lights on one circuit. It keeps the familiar physical action available to guests and family members and avoids the “someone turned the bulb off” problem that affects smart bulbs.
Use a switch when the lights are ordinary dimmable bulbs and you want circuit-level scheduling or remote control. If the circuit contains several bulbs, one switch can operate all of them together, while bulb-by-bulb control would require multiple smart bulbs.
Choose a smart plug for simple control of a plug-in lamp
A plug is the straightforward choice for a table or floor lamp that turns on automatically when power is restored. It can add a schedule without replacing the bulb or opening a wall box. It is also useful for a non-smart device whose own power switch remains in the on position.
Do not use a plug merely because a device has a plug. Check what happens after a complete power interruption. A television, for example, commonly returns to standby rather than turning fully on when power is restored; TP-Link notes that such a device may still need its own manual power-on action after a smart plug re-energizes it.
Check installation and wiring before you buy
Bulbs and plugs avoid in-wall replacement
Installing a bulb generally means removing the old bulb, fitting the compatible smart bulb, and completing the manufacturer’s pairing process. A plug is similarly simple physically: connect it to the outlet, connect the lamp or load, and configure it in the specified app. These options can be appropriate in rented homes or anywhere altering the electrical box is not practical, subject to local rules and the landlord’s requirements.
Switches require a model-specific wiring check
Replacing a switch involves identifying the circuit, confirming the electrical box and wiring, and following the model’s installation instructions. Never infer wiring requirements from another brand or model. For example, TP-Link states that its HS200 switch requires live, load, and neutral wires. That requirement describes the HS200; it is not a universal rule for every smart switch.
Before selecting a switch, inspect the box only if you are qualified to do so and the circuit is safely de-energized. Confirm whether the model supports the type of circuit, number of switches controlling the light, grounding arrangement, and available space. If the documentation is unclear, use a qualified electrician rather than guessing.

Dimming is a compatibility problem, not a feature checkbox
A dimmable LED bulb must be compatible with the dimming method used by the switch. TP-Link describes its supported smart Wi-Fi dimmers as using leading-edge/TRIAC phase-cut dimming for specified bulb types and warns that an incompatible bulb can flicker, buzz, dim unevenly, or drop out at low levels. A bulb labeled “dimmable” is not proof that it will work with every smart dimmer.

If you are replacing several bulbs on one circuit, verify the combined load and whether the manufacturer lists that exact bulb family. Test the lowest and highest settings before completing a large installation.
Do not put a smart bulb on a smart dimmer by assumption
Smart bulbs already contain their own dimming electronics. TP-Link says its Kasa and Tapo smart bulbs provide built-in dimming and should be controlled through their app rather than a smart dimmer. An external dimmer can interrupt or modulate the bulb’s power in a way the bulb was not designed to handle. Use a conventional on/off switch that remains on, a manufacturer-approved controller, or the bulb’s own app and compatible accessories.
Preserve the physical-control experience
Ask who will operate the light at 2 a.m., when a guest enters the room, or when the internet is unavailable. A smart switch gives an immediate wall action. A smart bulb gives richer lighting effects but requires the bulb to remain powered and may require an app, voice command, or wireless control.
If you select bulbs, establish a household rule for the existing wall switch and make the desired control obvious. Some homes use a switch guard or a dedicated wireless button; others rely on automation. The important requirement is that people can operate the light without repeatedly cutting power to the smart bulb.

Verify the plug’s load and the connected device’s recovery behavior
Read the smart plug’s rated current and wattage on its specifications, then compare those limits with the connected device’s requirements. Use the more restrictive limit when a device lists both. Do not exceed the rating for short periods on the assumption that a schedule or a low average load makes it safe.
Also check the device’s power-on state. A lamp with a mechanical switch left on generally comes back on when the plug supplies power. Electronics with standby modes, soft buttons, thermostatic controls, or internal timers may remain off, return to standby, or lose settings. Test one complete off-and-on cycle before relying on an unattended schedule.

Check communication, platform, and away-from-home control
Each model specifies how it communicates and which app or smart-home platform it supports. Confirm support for the platform you already use instead of assuming that every product works with every assistant. A product may communicate directly over Wi-Fi, through Bluetooth, or through another local hub; the setup steps and remote capabilities differ.
ENERGY STAR advises considering voice control and whether you need to operate the device when away. Bluetooth has limited range for away-from-home control unless another system provides a bridge to the internet. A product that works locally in the same room may therefore be unsuitable for a vacation schedule or remote check-in.
Review account, hub, network, and outage behavior in the manufacturer’s documentation. Decide whether the light or plug must continue a schedule during an internet interruption, and whether local physical control remains available. These are product-specific behaviors, not guarantees of the category.
Compare the total cost for the installation you actually need
There is no evidence-based universal statement that bulbs, switches, or plugs are always cheapest. Calculate the complete setup:
- For bulbs, multiply the per-bulb cost by the number of sockets and include any required bridge or control accessory.
- For switches, count every circuit, account for compatible dimmer or multi-way models, and include professional installation if the wiring is unsuitable for do-it-yourself work.
- For plugs, count each separately controlled lamp or load and check whether a higher-rated model is required.
- Include replacement bulbs, accessories, subscriptions if a product requires them, and the cost of changing incompatible lamps or dimmers.
ENERGY STAR notes that additional lighting features can increase initial cost. A more expensive color bulb may still be the economical choice if it replaces several separate controls, while a switch may be less expensive than fitting many bulbs in a multi-lamp fixture. Make the comparison using your room’s actual device count rather than a single-unit price.
A step-by-step selection process
- Name the load. Write down whether you are controlling a screw-in bulb, a hardwired light circuit, or a plug-in lamp or appliance.
- Define the required behavior. Choose among on/off scheduling, dimming, tunable white, color, scenes, voice control, and operation while away. Eliminate categories that cannot provide the essential feature.
- Decide how wall control should work. If the existing wall switch must remain the primary control, favor a smart switch. If app-based bulb control is acceptable, a smart bulb remains an option.
- Inspect constraints. For a switch, verify the exact model’s live, load, neutral, ground, box, and circuit requirements. For a bulb, verify socket, fixture, and physical dimensions. For a plug, verify outlet type and rated load.
- Resolve dimming. Match the bulb and dimmer’s supported method and load range. Never connect a smart bulb to a smart dimmer unless both manufacturers explicitly support that combination.
- Test power recovery. With a plug or switch, turn power fully off and back on and observe whether the connected device returns to the state your automation requires.
- Confirm the ecosystem. Check the exact app, wireless method, voice-platform support, hub requirement, Bluetooth range, and away-from-home behavior.
- Price the complete installation. Multiply by the number of lights or loads and include accessories, replacement hardware, and any installation cost.
- Install one unit first. Validate pairing, physical control, dimming, schedules, and recovery behavior before purchasing the remaining units.
Room-by-room examples
Bedroom table lamp
For a lamp that only needs a bedtime schedule and remote on/off, a smart plug is often the simplest approach if the lamp’s switch can stay on. Choose a smart bulb instead when you want gradual dimming, tunable white, or color scenes at the bulb level.
Recommended Free Tools
Kitchen ceiling fixture
If the fixture is operated from a wall location and should remain intuitive for everyone, a smart switch is generally the better starting point. Use a dimmer model only after confirming the installed bulbs are compatible with its dimming method. Color effects require compatible smart bulbs and a control arrangement that does not remove their power.

Decorative multi-bulb fixture
Choose between one switch controlling the entire circuit and multiple smart bulbs controlling individual sockets. The switch favors one physical action and circuit-wide scheduling; bulbs favor independent colors, brightness, and scenes. Count the bulbs and compare that total installation cost with one compatible switch.
Television or other electronics
A smart plug is not automatically a safe or useful remote power button for electronics. Verify the plug’s rating and test the device’s behavior after power is restored. If it returns to standby and requires a button press, the plug will not provide the fully automatic start you expected.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Turning off a smart bulb at the wall
Symptom: the app reports the bulb as unavailable. Cause: the wall switch removed its power. Fix: restore power and use an app, voice command, or compatible wireless control instead of the ordinary switch.
Assuming every smart switch needs a neutral wire
Symptom: the selected switch cannot be installed in the box. Cause: wiring requirements differ by model. Fix: read the exact installation guide; the TP-Link HS200, for example, requires live, load, and neutral, but that does not define every switch.
Pairing an incompatible LED with a smart dimmer
Symptoms: flicker, buzzing, uneven dimming, or dropout. Fix: use a bulb and dimmer combination listed as compatible, or replace the dimmer with an on/off switch when the bulb has its own smart dimming.
Exceeding a plug’s rating
Symptom: overheating risk, shutdown, or an installation outside the product’s specifications. Fix: compare the device’s current and wattage with the plug’s limits, avoid power strips and extension cords where the manufacturer prohibits them, and choose a properly rated product.
Expecting every powered device to restart
Symptom: a schedule restores power but the appliance remains in standby or off. Fix: test the device’s power-on behavior and use a different control method when manual activation is still required.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Buying for an ecosystem rather than a use case
Symptom: the product works locally but cannot be controlled from the desired app or while away. Fix: verify the exact model’s platform, connection method, bridge requirement, and remote-control support before ordering.
Standby-power figures: how to interpret them
ENERGY STAR’s SHEMS criteria specify maximum standby power of 0.5 watts for smart light switches and 1.0 watt for plug-load monitor/control devices within that program’s system requirements. These are program criteria, not measurements of every switch or plug and not a comparison of typical products. A bulb’s or switch’s actual standby behavior depends on its design and operating state; use the model’s specifications when standby consumption matters.
Quick Recap
Final decision checklist
- Choose a smart bulb when bulb-level color, tunable white, dimming, or scenes are the priority and continuous power can be maintained.
- Choose a smart switch when familiar wall control of a hardwired circuit matters most and the exact wiring and bulb combination is supported.
- Choose a smart plug when a compatible plug-in lamp or load only needs straightforward on/off automation and its power-on behavior is acceptable.
- For every option, verify the exact model’s installation, load, dimming, platform, and away-from-home requirements before buying.
