Start with the exact rulebook text your group uses, read the entire rule in context, then check the current Sage Advice Compendium for an official interpretation. If the wording remains unclear, discuss the likely intent and the table’s preferred play experience. The Dungeon Master (DM) makes the campaign’s final ruling, and the decision should be identified as a textual reading, an interpretation of intent, or a table-specific choice for fun.

This approach avoids two common mistakes: treating every ambiguous sentence as an unbreakable technical contract, or declaring what the designers “must have meant” without first checking the words on the page. D&D’s official guidance calls these three lenses rules as written (RAW), rules as intended (RAI), and rules as fun (RAF), and recommends combining them rather than using one lens mechanically in every situation.

What RAW, RAI and RAF actually mean

RAW: rules as written

RAW asks: What does the published rule say when read in context? The current official Sage Advice Compendium describes RAW as studying “what the text says in context, without regard to the designers’ intent.” That means checking definitions, exceptions, timing language, and nearby paragraphs before deciding what a sentence does.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RAW is not the same as selecting the shortest possible reading of one phrase. A rule’s heading, glossary terms, prerequisites, and cross-references can change its meaning. RAW also depends on the edition, revision, and book the campaign has adopted. A 2014 fifth-edition passage and a 2024 revised passage may address the same subject with different wording.

RAI: rules as intended

RAI asks: What were the designers trying to make the rule do? Intent is useful when the wording fails to communicate a plausible purpose, produces a result that conflicts with the surrounding rules, or behaves differently from the way the same rule is explained elsewhere. RAI is an interpretation, not a replacement text. Unless an official clarification addresses the question, a claim about intent should be presented as an informed explanation rather than certainty about a private design discussion.

RAF: rules as fun

RAF asks: Which ruling best supports this group’s enjoyment? The official Compendium says a DM may depart from the text or inferred intent when doing so brings the greatest delight to the players. RAF can matter when a strict reading would derail a session, invalidate a character concept, or create an experience the group has already agreed it does not want. A RAF ruling is a campaign choice; label it honestly instead of presenting it as the only official answer.

Which source has authority?

These lenses are methods for reasoning, not equal levels of authority. The published rule text is the first source to check. The current Sage Advice Compendium is the official location for fifth-edition interpretations of rules questions. Public comments by D&D staff or other Wizards personnel outside that Compendium are described there as advice, not official rulings.

The DM decides whether to use an official interpretation and always has the final say for the campaign. That does not make discussion pointless: players can bring the text, explain the consequences of competing readings, and ask the DM which approach the table will use. A ruling can be authoritative for tonight’s game without being a claim that every table must use it.

First identify the rules version your table is using

Before comparing RAW and RAI, establish the text being interpreted. Ask which edition or revision the character, adventure, and relevant rule come from. The 2024 core books are fifth-edition revisions designed to remain compatible with existing fifth-edition play, but compatibility does not eliminate the need to identify the wording your campaign actually adopted.

  • Record whether the group uses the 2014 core books, the 2024 revised core books, or a mixture.
  • Check whether a campaign document, organized-play policy, or DM announcement has selected one version for disputed rules.
  • Use the rule’s own edition and book before importing language from another version.
  • When a character option comes from an older book, verify how the campaign handles that option alongside the current core rules.

For broader adjudication advice, Wizards lists the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide as released on November 12, 2024. It is an optional reference, not a prerequisite for answering a RAW-versus-RAI question.

A repeatable RAW-to-RAI-to-RAF decision process

1. State the exact question

Turn a heated argument into one sentence that can be answered. “Can this feature work?” is usually too broad. “When the condition is applied at the end of this turn, does the effect end before or after the next turn begins?” identifies the timing issue. List the actors, trigger, duration, and result that are actually disputed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Gather the complete rule text

Open the rule in the book or rules reference used by the campaign. Read the full paragraph, headings, definitions, examples, exceptions, and any rule it explicitly references. Do not rely on a screenshot, memory, or an isolated phrase. Note whether a term is a defined game term or ordinary language.

3. Write the strongest RAW reading

Describe what the text does without discussing what would be fair, intended, or entertaining. Quote only the wording needed to identify the operative clause, then explain how the surrounding text supports the reading. If two readings remain grammatically plausible, write both rather than pretending the ambiguity is settled.

4. Check for a current official clarification

Search the current Sage Advice Compendium for the rule, feature, or wording. Confirm that the answer concerns the same edition and text. The Compendium’s official status applies to the interpretations published there; a social-media comment or interview may be useful context but is not equivalent to a Compendium ruling.

5. Assess RAI carefully

Ask what problem the rule appears designed to solve and whether the proposed reading fits neighboring mechanics, examples, and the way the rule is explained elsewhere. Distinguish evidence from speculation. “This interpretation makes the exception meaningful” is an argument about design function; “the designer definitely intended this” is a stronger claim that needs direct support.

6. Apply the table’s RAF test

Consider the practical effect on the session. Will one interpretation create an enjoyable challenge, or will it produce a surprise that a player could not reasonably anticipate? Would applying a different reading preserve the adventure without undermining another character or the campaign’s agreed style? RAF is not a license to change every inconvenient rule; it is a deliberate choice about the experience this group wants.

7. Make and record the ruling

The DM settles the live question. State whether the ruling is:

  • RAW: the table is following the text as read in context;
  • official interpretation: the current Compendium addresses the question and the DM is adopting that answer;
  • RAI: the table is using a reasoned interpretation of apparent purpose; or
  • house/RAF ruling: the DM is choosing a different result for this campaign’s play experience.

Also say whether it applies only to the current scene or will be the standing interpretation. If the issue is consuming play time, make a provisional ruling, continue the session, and revisit it between sessions.

How to compare two plausible readings

When both sides can quote the book, compare them on the same criteria instead of arguing from volume or confidence.

Question What to examine Why it matters
Textual fit Does the reading follow the complete wording, definitions, exceptions, and timing rules? RAW begins with the published text in context.
Official clarification Does the current Sage Advice Compendium address this rule and version? An applicable Compendium ruling is the strongest published interpretation source.
Intent evidence Does the proposed purpose explain the wording and surrounding mechanics, or is it guesswork? RAI is useful only when the inferred purpose is well supported.
Consistency Would the reading conflict with another rule or with established rulings in the same campaign? A stable interpretation prevents similar cases from receiving arbitrary outcomes.
Table fit How does each result affect the group’s agreed difficulty, tone, and enjoyment? RAF allows a DM to choose the result that best serves the table.

A reading can score well on one criterion and poorly on another. For example, a strict textual result may be clear RAW but produce a surprising interaction that the group would rather handle with a campaign ruling. Say that explicitly instead of relabeling the preferred outcome as RAW.

Worked example: resolving a timing ambiguity

Imagine an effect says it lasts “until the end of your next turn,” and the table disagrees about whether an event at the boundary occurs before or after the effect ends. Use the process above:

  1. Identify the edition and the exact feature text.
  2. Read the duration language with the initiative and turn-order rules around it.
  3. Write the result that follows from the text’s ordinary timing structure.
  4. Check whether the current Compendium has addressed the same duration wording.
  5. Ask whether the wording appears intended to create a full intervening turn, a partial window, or merely a simple end condition. Treat that as an interpretation unless an official answer confirms it.
  6. If neither reading is decisive, choose the result that preserves the group’s expected play and announce whether it is a one-scene ruling or the campaign standard.

The example demonstrates the method without declaring a universal answer. Different editions, features, and initiative states can change the result, which is why importing a remembered answer from another book is risky.

Handling disputes as a player

A productive player question is specific, sourced, and consequence-focused. Bring the relevant page or rules entry, then explain what each reading would do in the current situation.

  1. Read the source before raising the objection.
  2. Describe the disputed sentence and the alternative reading in neutral language.
  3. Explain the practical consequence for the character, encounter, or other players.
  4. Ask whether the DM wants RAW, an official clarification, a reasoned RAI interpretation, or a table ruling for fun.
  5. Accept the ruling for the scene unless the DM invites further debate, and request a between-session discussion if the issue affects future character decisions.

Do not treat an online staff comment as a trump card. The official support guidance places the DM in authority for the shared campaign, and the current Compendium distinguishes official rulings from general advice.

Handling disputes as a DM

Explain the basis, not just the outcome

Tell players whether you are following the text, adopting a Compendium interpretation, inferring intent, or making a RAF choice. A short explanation makes the ruling easier to trust even when someone prefers the other result.

Use a consistent default

Apply the same interpretation to comparable situations. If an exception is necessary, identify what makes the cases different. Consistency is a practical campaign policy rather than a claim that every rule has one objectively correct answer.

Protect informed player choices

If a new interpretation significantly changes a character, build, or long-term plan, discuss it between sessions when possible. Consider a respec, replacement choice, or other remedy if the player made the decision under a different table interpretation. This is a table-management option, not a requirement imposed by the Compendium.

Keep the session moving

When no one can verify the answer quickly, make a provisional ruling and note the question. Revisit it after the session with the relevant book and Compendium entry. Avoid presenting a rushed ruling as a permanent statement about the rules.

Common mistakes when choosing RAW or RAI

  • Cherry-picking a phrase: ignoring definitions, exceptions, or adjacent paragraphs can produce a RAW claim that is not actually contextual.
  • Mixing editions: a correct answer for one revision may be wrong for the text your campaign uses.
  • Calling preference “intent”: a result that feels balanced or familiar is not automatically what the designers intended.
  • Treating Sage Advice as a mandate: the DM decides whether to use an official interpretation.
  • Letting a debate consume play: a temporary ruling followed by scheduled review is often better than stopping the session.
  • Changing the rule silently: players need to know when a ruling is a house interpretation so they can make informed choices.

What changed with the 2024 core books?

Wizards describes the 2024 Player’s Handbook as a revision intended to remain compatible with existing fifth-edition play. “Compatible” does not mean every sentence is identical or that a 2014 answer automatically controls a 2024 question. Identify the exact wording, check whether an official clarification matches that version, and record which rules set the campaign has adopted.

The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide, released November 12, 2024, provides broader tools, advice, and examples of common pitfalls for DMs. It can help with adjudication practice, but the basic RAW/RAI/RAF method still begins with the rule text and the current Compendium.

A one-page table policy you can adopt

Groups that want fewer mid-session arguments can agree on a short policy before play:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • We identify the edition and books in use before interpreting a disputed rule.
  • We read the complete rule and nearby context.
  • We check the current Sage Advice Compendium when a material ambiguity remains.
  • The DM makes the ruling for the session and labels it RAW, official interpretation, RAI, or house/RAF.
  • Players may present consequences and evidence without interrupting play indefinitely.
  • Major changes are discussed between sessions and applied consistently afterward.
  • Unresolved questions receive a provisional ruling rather than an argument that stops the game.

This policy does not eliminate disagreement. It gives the disagreement a predictable path and makes clear who decides the live outcome.

Who has the final say?

The DM has the final say on rules questions in the campaign. That authority works best when paired with transparency: start from the actual text, consult the current official Compendium when relevant, listen to the players’ consequences and expectations, and state whether the result is a textual reading, an interpretation of intent, or a fun-focused house ruling. RAW is the starting point, RAI can resolve a communication gap, and RAF can protect the experience the group agreed to create.
