Use the PS5’s built-in storage if you want the simplest, no-cost option. Add a compatible M.2 SSD when you need extra space from which PS5 games can be downloaded, updated, and played. Choose USB extended storage when your priority is archiving PS5 games for later transfer or playing PS4 games directly from the drive. A PS5 game stored on USB cannot run from that drive; it must be copied to the console’s internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD first.
The right choice depends less on the drive’s advertised capacity than on where you want games to run, how much installation work you accept, and whether the hardware meets Sony’s compatibility rules.
The decision in one view
There are three practical storage locations on a PS5: the internal console drive, an M.2 SSD installed inside the expansion bay, and a USB drive formatted as extended storage. They are not interchangeable. The internal drive and a compliant M.2 SSD can run PS5 games. USB extended storage can run PS4 games, but PS5 games placed there are storage copies only.

This distinction answers the common question, “Should I get an M.2 SSD or an external hard drive for my PS5?” Choose M.2 for direct PS5 play; choose USB for an archive or direct PS4 play.

What the built-in PS5 storage is for
The internal console storage is the default location for games, saved data, and other system data. It works without buying hardware, opening the console, or formatting another device, so it is the lowest-risk starting point.
When internal storage is enough
Keep using the internal drive if you install a modest number of games, regularly finish and remove titles, or do not want to perform hardware installation. You can delete an installed game and later download the purchase again from your game library, so deleting an installation does not erase your entitlement to that game.
How to make room
When space becomes tight, remove games you are no longer playing or move them to another supported storage location. Treat saved data separately: game installations can be re-downloaded, while saved data and other personal content should be handled through the PS5’s own data-management and backup options.

If repeatedly deleting and downloading games is inconvenient, consider an M.2 SSD or USB archive instead of replacing the internal drive.
When an M.2 SSD is the right expansion
An M.2 SSD is the only added-storage choice in this comparison that is intended to let you download, update, and launch PS5 games without first moving them back to the internal drive. M.2 requirements from Sony’s current US guide
Use every requirement together. A drive that satisfies only the capacity or speed number is not automatically suitable.

These specifications come from Sony’s PlayStation Support guidance for the US. Sony also says it cannot guarantee every third-party drive that matches the listed characteristics. Some games may not perform exactly as they do on the internal SSD even when an M.2 drive exceeds the recommended sequential-read speed.

Check the physical fit, not just the product name
Before buying, compare the manufacturer’s full dimensions with the PS5 bay limits. Include the heatsink, heat-transfer sheet, screws, and any other cooling structure in the thickness measurement. A drive can be electrically suitable yet fail to fit because its cooler is too tall or wide.
If the drive already has a built-in heatsink, do not add another heatsink on top of it. The resulting stack can exceed the bay’s clearance or prevent the cover from closing. Sony’s guide specifically warns against placing another heatsink on a drive with one already installed.
What installation involves
Installing an M.2 drive is more involved than plugging in USB storage. Sony’s installation instructions call for a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver and advise following the instructions for your specific PS5 model.

- Back up anything important on the M.2 drive. First-use formatting erases all data already on it. Start with an empty drive or copy its contents elsewhere.
- Power down the PS5 completely. Do not work on a running or rest-mode console.
- Remove the console cover and expansion-bay cover according to the instructions for your PS5 model. Keep the screws and covers organized.
- Install the M.2 SSD in the correct length position. Secure the spacer and retaining screw as shown in Sony’s guide; do not force a drive or leave it unsupported.
- Reinstall the bay cover and console cover. Sony says not to power on or play with the console cover removed.
- Start the PS5 and format the drive when prompted. Formatting is required before the new M.2 storage can be used and permanently erases existing contents.
- Confirm the capacity in Storage settings before moving a large game collection. If the drive is not recognized, turn the console off and recheck seating, screw position, cover installation, and the drive’s specification.
When USB extended storage is the better choice
A commercially available compatible USB drive can be formatted as USB extended storage. It is useful when you want to keep PS5 games available for later transfer, or when you want PS4 games to run directly from the external drive.

Check the drive’s actual interface and capacity before formatting. A device marketed merely as “external storage” is not automatically a qualifying PS5 extended-storage drive.
What you can do from USB
- PS4 games: Install and play them directly from USB extended storage, freeing internal space.
- PS5 games: Move them to USB to free internal or M.2 capacity, but copy them back to internal or M.2 storage before playing.
- Game transfers: Use USB as a holding area when you do not want to redownload a PS5 game.
Formatting the USB drive erases its existing data. Disconnect it through the PS5’s safe-removal command rather than simply pulling the cable; an unsafe removal can cause data loss or corruption.
USB setup sequence
- Connect the compatible drive directly to the PS5. Do not route it through a USB hub.
- Open the PS5 storage settings and choose the connected USB drive for formatting as extended storage.
- Read the erase warning and confirm only if the drive is backed up or empty.
- Move PS4 games or PS5 game archives using the console’s game and storage-management controls.
- Before unplugging, use the PS5’s safe-disconnect option. Wait for confirmation that the drive can be removed.

The table’s central distinction is functional: M.2 adds playable PS5 capacity, while USB adds economical storage space and direct PS4 capacity but not a launch location for PS5 games.
A decision framework for common situations
“I do not want to buy or install anything.”
Stay with the internal drive. Delete completed games, then redownload purchases from the library when you want them again. This is the only option that avoids both hardware cost and setup work.

“I want a larger library ready to launch.”
Choose an M.2 SSD that meets every Sony requirement. Verify the drive’s PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe interface, M key, capacity, dimensions with its cooler, and cooling method before purchase. Accept that Sony does not guarantee every third-party model.
“I want to keep PS5 games without downloading them again.”
Use USB extended storage as an archive. Move games there when you need internal space, then copy a selected game back before playing. This is useful for a large library that is played occasionally, but it adds a transfer step whenever you switch titles.
“Most of my library is PS4.”
A qualifying USB drive can hold and run PS4 games directly, so it can preserve internal capacity for PS5 installations. An M.2 SSD also supports PS4 games, but its main advantage is direct PS5 play.
“I want both convenience and an archive.”
Use an M.2 SSD for the PS5 games you actively play and USB extended storage for less frequently used PS5 games or a PS4 collection. The PS5 supports moving games among internal, M.2, and USB locations, so the two expansion types can serve different jobs.

Moving games between storage locations
The PS5 treats storage locations as separate destinations. When you move a PS5 game from USB to internal or M.2 storage, the console copies the installation; it does not make the USB version playable in place. Plan transfers around available free space, especially when several large games are involved.

- Use internal storage for the games you need immediately and for system data.
- Use M.2 storage for an expanded, always-playable PS5 library.
- Use USB storage for PS5 titles you are retaining and PS4 titles you want to play directly.
- After moving a game, verify its new location in the PS5 storage view before deleting the original or disconnecting a USB drive.
Formatting, backups, and safe handling
Formatting is destructive
Both M.2 installation and USB extended-storage setup require formatting. Formatting removes the drive’s existing files, so copy anything valuable to another location first. Do not assume that a newly purchased drive is empty; return data, firmware files, or previous use can still matter to you.
Do not interrupt an active transfer
Wait for a move or copy operation to finish before shutting down the console or disconnecting a drive. For USB storage, always use the PS5’s safe-disconnect control. Abrupt removal can corrupt the file system and force another format.
Keep cooling and covers correct
For M.2, use an effective heatsink and heat-transfer sheet within Sony’s dimensional limits. Do not stack a second heatsink on a drive that already includes one. Refit the expansion-bay and console covers before normal play, and never operate the console with its cover removed.

The PS5 does not detect the M.2 SSD
- Turn the console off and reseat the drive.
- Confirm that it is PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe with an M key, not M.2 SATA.
- Check that its form factor, width, and total thickness including the heatsink fit the bay.
- Verify that the retaining screw and spacer are in the correct position for the drive length.
- Reinstall the covers before restarting and follow the instructions for your exact PS5 model.
The PS5 rejects or cannot use a USB drive
- Confirm a SuperSpeed USB rating of 5 Gbps or later and capacity between 250 GB and 8 TB.
- Connect it directly to the console rather than through a hub.
- Disconnect any other USB extended-storage drive; only one can be active at a time.
- Back up the contents, then format the drive as extended storage if you are willing to erase it.
- If it still fails, treat the device as incompatible; Sony does not guarantee every qualifying-looking third-party drive.
A PS5 game on USB will not start
This behavior is expected, not a drive fault. Move or copy the game from USB extended storage to the internal console storage or an installed M.2 SSD, then launch it from that destination.
An M.2 game does not perform exactly like an internal-drive game
Meeting or exceeding the 5,500 MB/s recommended sequential-read speed does not guarantee identical behavior. Sony notes that some games may perform differently on third-party M.2 storage, and it does not guarantee every drive that matches the published specifications.
Questions to answer before buying
- Do I need to launch PS5 games directly from the added storage?
- Will I mainly archive PS5 games or play PS4 games?
- Am I prepared to verify an M.2 drive’s electrical and physical specifications?
- Can I back up the drive before destructive formatting?
- Do I have a safe plan for disconnecting USB storage?
If the answer to the first question is yes, focus on a compliant M.2 SSD. If the answer is no and you value an archive or PS4 playback, focus on qualifying USB extended storage. If neither expansion solves a real problem yet, continue with internal storage and manage installations as needed.

This comparison follows Sony’s current US PlayStation Support guidance for M.2 expansion, M.2 installation, USB extended storage, and storage management, reviewed as current on October 13, 2026. Requirements and menus can vary by region or PS5 model, so use the instructions that match your console. Sony’s September 2021 announcement also describes M.2 storage as supporting downloads, copying, and launching PS5 and PS4 games and media apps once installed.
