Choose Performance when smoother motion and responsiveness matter more; choose Quality, Graphics, or Ray Tracing when you prefer sharper output or extra visual effects and are comfortable with a lower frame-rate target. These labels are not Xbox-wide standards: each game and console can offer different modes, settings, and requirements. Read the game’s current mode descriptions, check what your display supports, and compare the options in the kind of gameplay you actually play.

What performance and quality modes change

A graphics mode is a set of trade-offs chosen by a game’s developers, not a fixed Xbox setting with the same technical meaning in every title. A mode can balance frame rate, rendering resolution, image processing, and visual effects differently from another mode. The words used in the menu—such as Performance, Quality, Graphics, Balanced, or Ray Tracing—are the developer’s labels, not a universal specification.

Performance modes commonly prioritize higher or steadier frame rates. More frames can make movement look smoother and can make controls feel more immediate, particularly in fast action or racing games. That does not guarantee a particular frame rate or a measurable improvement in every game; the actual target and behavior are title-specific.

Quality or graphics modes commonly prioritize image detail or effects. Depending on the game, that can mean a higher render resolution, sharper-looking output, reflections, ray tracing, or other visual features. Those options can require more rendering work, so the mode may target a lower frame rate. A mode called “Quality” does not necessarily include ray tracing, and a mode called “Performance” does not necessarily use the same resolution or frame rate as a similarly named mode in another game.

Xbox’s Jason Ronald described frame rate and resolution as creative decisions left to each title’s developers in Xbox Wire’s March 16, 2020 article on Xbox Series X technology. In practice, this means the game’s own explanation is more useful than assuming that a console-wide label promises a particular result.

There is no single Xbox-wide performance-versus-quality specification to look up. One developer may expose a few named presets; another may provide a balanced choice, switch options on the fly, or tune motion and image quality together without a simple toggle. Frame rate and resolution are only two parts of the comparison: the visual feature being added, the way resolution changes, and the display requirement can matter just as much.

Make the choice based on the game and your priorities

Pick the higher-frame-rate option for speed and control

Start with Performance or another high-frame-rate mode if you play a game where tracking fast movement, turning quickly, or reacting to events is central. Racing is a clear example: in Xbox Wire’s June 25, 2020 discussion of DiRT 5, Codemasters Technical Director David Springate said players would experience the strongest sense of speed and responsiveness at the highest frame rate. That is a developer’s explanation of the design goal, not a guarantee that every player or game will feel the same change.

Also consider whether your screen can display the mode’s intended refresh rate. A game may still offer the setting, but a display that does not support the required refresh rate cannot show the full high-refresh experience described for that mode. Requirements vary by game; do not infer a 120 Hz requirement for every performance mode.

Pick the visual mode when its specific feature matters to you

Choose a graphics, quality, or ray-tracing option when the particular difference listed in the menu is worth more to you than the lower frame-rate target. For example, if a mode adds ray-traced reflections that you want to see and the game’s lower target is acceptable, that is a meaningful reason to select it. If the description mentions a sharper output or other effects, decide based on those stated differences rather than the mode name alone.

The trade-off is personal and depends on the game. A slower-paced game may make a lower frame-rate target comfortable for you, while fast movement may make it distracting. There is no sourced, universal figure for how much more responsive Performance feels across Xbox games, so treat the mode description as a starting point and judge the result in play.

Do not assume you must choose between the two

Some games use a balanced mode, provide unusual combinations, or optimize motion and presentation without offering a simple Performance-versus-Quality toggle. The labels and available choices depend on the title, console model, and sometimes the connected display. If your game offers a third option, read what it trades away before treating it as a simple midpoint.

Fortnite illustrates that a developer does not have to present a pair of named presets to make deliberate choices about motion and visuals. In Xbox Wire’s November 12, 2020 article, Epic Games Lead Console Programmer Ben Woodhouse said the team wanted to use the extra console power to make the game feel more alive, “not just to increase the graphics settings and resolution.” He described a 4K/60 fps Series X version and a 1080p target on Series S, along with dynamic resolution and fewer dropped frames than the prior generation. Those are the developer’s historical descriptions, not current independent test results.

How to compare the settings accurately

  1. Open the game’s current graphics or display menu. Find the mode descriptions in the game itself, and check the developer’s notes if the menu is unclear. Do not assume an older article describes the current patch.
  2. Identify the frame-rate target. Look for a stated target such as 60 or 120 fps, and note whether the description says it is a target rather than a fixed result. A quoted target is not the same as an independent measurement of performance in every scene.
  3. Separate render resolution from output resolution. Render resolution is the resolution at which the game creates its image; output resolution is the signal sent to the display. A game can render below 4K and output a 4K signal, so “4K output” does not necessarily mean the game renders every frame at native 4K.
  4. Check whether resolution is dynamic. Dynamic resolution scaling means the game can adjust rendering resolution as conditions change. A listed resolution may therefore not describe a constant render resolution throughout play.
  5. Look for the feature that distinguishes the modes. This may be ray tracing, reflections, supersampling, or another visual treatment. Compare the named feature rather than assuming “Quality” always means the same thing.
  6. Confirm the console and display requirements. The same game may offer different specifications on Series X and Series S. Check for a stated compatible resolution or refresh rate, then confirm that your connected display supports it.
  7. Try both options in representative gameplay when switching is easy. Use the same type of scene or activity in each mode, and focus on the difference you care about: motion and response, or the image feature being added. If you cannot tell a meaningful difference, use the mode whose stated trade-off best matches your priorities.

When a game gives incomplete information, avoid filling in the blanks from its label. If it does not state a resolution, frame rate, or display requirement, that specification is not established by the mode name alone.

When comparing two descriptions, check that you are comparing like with like. A “4K” figure might describe the final output rather than the resolution used to render the game. A stated frame rate might be a target, and a dynamic-resolution mode may change the render resolution during play. A table of targets is useful for understanding the developer’s intent, but it is not an independent side-by-side test of every scene or patch.

Also check whether a feature is exclusive to one mode. DOOM Eternal’s cited Update 6 descriptions distinguish Balanced and Performance from Ray Tracing: the first two do not include ray tracing, while the Ray Tracing mode targets 60 fps on Series X. In Control Ultimate Edition, by contrast, the Graphics mode’s ray-traced transparency and reflections are paired with a 30 fps target, while Performance targets 60 fps. The mode name alone cannot tell you which effects you gain or what frame-rate trade-off applies.

Control Ultimate Edition, Xbox Series S Performance: targets 60 fps. 900p render resolution with 1080p output. Xbox Wire’s 2021 article; the cited specification describes Performance Mode.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Xbox Series X One option: 120 fps. Another: 60 fps. Moon Studios described a 4K/120 fps option and a 6K supersampled rendering mode at 60 fps with a 4K final image. The game could switch between the options on the fly. Xbox Wire reported the developer’s description in 2020 and specified a compatible TV for the 120 fps experience.
Fortnite, Xbox Series X Developer described 60 fps. Epic Games Lead Console Programmer Ben Woodhouse said the Series X version ran at 4K. Xbox Wire, November 12, 2020. This example illustrates a design without a simple pair of named modes in the cited description.
Fortnite, Xbox Series S Developer described a 1080p target. Ben Woodhouse also described dynamic resolution and fewer dropped frames than the prior generation, according to the developer. Xbox Wire, November 12, 2020; these are developer statements from that article, not current independent test results.

How to read the examples

DOOM Eternal shows why console model and refresh rate matter: its Series X and Series S figures differ, and its listed Performance Mode had a stated 120 Hz display requirement. Control demonstrates why output resolution alone can be misleading: both Series X modes were described as 4K output while rendering at 1440p, with different frame-rate targets and effects. Ori’s options show that a game can use supersampling and on-the-fly switching rather than a conventional pair of menu choices. Fortnite shows that developers may tune presentation and motion without offering a mode pair that neatly maps to “performance” and “quality.”

Ori is also a reminder that more than one presentation goal can be available without the standard labels. Moon Studios described a 4K/120 fps option and a 6K supersampled rendering mode at 60 fps, producing a 4K final image; the options could be switched on the fly. Xbox Wire’s 2020 article specified a compatible TV for the 120 fps experience. This example does not mean that every game can render at 6K, or that supersampling is interchangeable with native 4K rendering.

These examples do not mean that the Series X or Series S always achieves the figures listed, or that a later version of a game retains them. They are specific reported designs from named titles and publication dates, not current, across-the-board console specifications.

Display compatibility: when refresh rate matters

A display’s refresh rate is the number of times per second it can refresh its image. A 120 Hz-compatible display can refresh up to 120 times per second; that capability is relevant when a game offers a 120 fps experience. However, the game, console, connection, and display must all support the intended mode for the full experience. A higher-refresh display does not force a game to run at a higher frame rate, and a game’s target alone does not prove that your setup supports it.

Xbox Wire’s 2021 DOOM Eternal Update 6 report specifically said Performance Mode required a 120 Hz-compatible display. That is a sourced requirement for that mode, not a blanket requirement for Xbox performance modes. Ori and the Will of the Wisps’ 2020 description likewise specified a compatible TV for its 120 fps experience. For other games, use the current in-game description or developer notes to confirm the requirement.

Before changing equipment, check the specifications of the display you already own and the game’s stated requirement. If your display does not support a mode’s target refresh rate, you can still choose among whatever options the game makes available, but you should not expect the display to show the full high-refresh experience. A display upgrade is not automatically necessary just because a game has a Performance option.

There is no reason to treat a new television or monitor as a default part of choosing a mode. The relevant question is whether your present screen meets the particular game’s requirement. The sourced examples establish a conditional case for a 120 Hz-compatible display in DOOM Eternal Update 6 Performance Mode and Ori’s 120 fps experience; they do not establish that every Xbox game requires a new screen or a 120 Hz panel.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Treating “Quality” as a fixed technical standard: it is a game-specific label. Read the listed frame rate, resolution, and effects.
  • Confusing output with rendering resolution: a 4K output signal can come from a lower render resolution. Look for both values when the developer provides them.
  • Assuming a listed resolution is locked: dynamic resolution scaling can make render resolution change during play. DOOM Eternal’s cited modes are an example.
  • Assuming a mode’s target is a guaranteed, observed frame rate: report a developer’s target as a target, and do not turn it into a universal benchmark.
  • Applying one console’s figures to another: Series X and Series S can have different options and specifications in the same title.
  • Relying on old menu descriptions or articles as current patch notes: the cited examples are from 2020–2021. Confirm the version you are playing.
  • Buying a display based only on a mode name: first verify the exact game requirement and your current screen’s capabilities.
  • Choosing by label instead of experience: test both modes in a representative section if the game lets you switch easily, and judge the trade-off that matters in that title.

A quick decision rule

Use this order when the menu offers several choices: first eliminate modes that your display cannot meet if the game states a specific requirement; next choose the mode aligned with the game’s demands and your preference—motion and response, or image detail and effects; then test it in the actual activity you play. If a balanced option is available, evaluate its stated compromises rather than assuming it is automatically best of both worlds. The right setting is the one whose documented trade-off and in-game result suit your play, not a mode name treated as an Xbox-wide promise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Performance mode always better on Xbox?

No. Performance modes commonly prioritize a higher or steadier frame rate, while graphics or quality modes may offer sharper output or extra effects. The exact trade-off varies by game, console, and display, so compare the current in-game descriptions and choose for the kind of play you value.

Does every Xbox Performance mode require a 120 Hz TV or monitor?

No. Requirements are title-specific. Xbox Wire’s June 29, 2021 report said DOOM Eternal Update 6 Performance Mode required a 120 Hz-compatible display, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps’ 120 fps experience also specified a compatible TV. Those examples do not establish a 120 Hz requirement for every performance mode.

Does 4K output mean a game is rendering at native 4K?

Not necessarily. Output resolution is the signal sent to the display; render resolution is the resolution used to create the image. Control Ultimate Edition’s Series X modes were described as 1440p render resolution with 4K output. Check for both figures when a developer provides them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a new display to use Performance mode?

Not by default. First check your current display’s capabilities and the requirement stated for the specific game mode. A 120 Hz-compatible display matters for cited 120 fps cases such as DOOM Eternal Update 6 Performance Mode, but the examples do not make a new display necessary for all Xbox performance options.

Are the mode figures in older Xbox articles guaranteed to match the game today?

No. The DOOM Eternal, Control, Ori, and Fortnite examples are historical developer or Xbox Wire descriptions from 2020–2021, not confirmation of every later patch or independent benchmark results. Check the current game menu and developer notes for the version you play.

The Bottom Line

Choose the mode by its stated trade-off, not by its label: favor higher frame-rate targets when responsive motion matters, or visual features and sharper presentation when those matter more. Check render versus output resolution, dynamic scaling, your console model, and any display requirement; then try the options in representative gameplay if switching is easy. No mode name promises the same result across Xbox games.
