Choose an open-world game when you want to set destinations, choose your route, and decide which activities matter first. Choose a more concentrated Nintendo-style adventure when you prefer a compact space filled with nearby interactions, a clearly visible progression loop, and goals that are easier to tackle one at a time.

This is a spectrum rather than a strict genre split. Super Mario Odyssey combines exploratory kingdoms with a collectible-driven structure, while The Legend of Zelda ranges from Breath of the Wild’s broad freedom to the top-down, puzzle-focused design of Echoes of Wisdom. Use the questions and comparisons below to match a game to the way you actually like to explore.

If you prefer… Look first at… Why it may fit
Choosing a distant destination and making your own route A broad open world You can set personal goals, change direction, and approach many activities in different orders.
Finding something interesting every few steps A concentrated adventure Smaller regions can pack puzzles, secrets, characters, and collectibles into a short distance.
A visible next objective A clear collection, puzzle, or level loop You can understand what unlocks the next area without planning an entire itinerary.
Solving problems experimentally A game with flexible tools Creative mechanics can support several solutions without requiring one prescribed sequence.
Optional help when navigation becomes tiring A title with adjustable guidance Assistance can reduce friction while preserving exploration.

These are tendencies, not guarantees. An open-world game can funnel you through a strongly signposted story, and a compact adventure can leave you remarkably free inside each area.

What “open world” means in practice

Scale and sightlines

A broad open world emphasizes distance. You may see a mountain, tower, settlement, or unusual landmark far away and decide that reaching it is the activity. Travel itself becomes part of play: you select a direction, learn the terrain, and alter plans when something else catches your attention.

The important feature is not simply a large map. It is the combination of space and agency. A huge map with one mandatory route can feel more linear than a small map with several meaningful approaches. Ask whether the game lets you turn curiosity into a destination or merely displays places you cannot yet access.

Self-directed ordering

Open-world structure usually gives you several available objectives at once. You might follow a main quest, investigate a shrine, gather equipment, or ignore all of them while exploring. This freedom rewards players who enjoy setting their own priorities, but it also asks you to remember where you were going and why.

In an October 2017 TIME interview, then Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé described Breath of the Wild’s vision as being able to “go anywhere [and] attack quests and shrines in any order you want.” That statement captures the defining appeal: destination choice and activity order belong largely to the player.

The trade-off: navigation work

Self-direction has a cost. You may spend time reading a map, deciding which marker matters, or returning to an area after acquiring a new ability. If you enjoy making plans, this is satisfying. If you would rather receive one clear next step, an unstructured world can feel like administrative work rather than adventure.

What a concentrated Nintendo-style adventure emphasizes

Density over distance

A compact adventure puts attention on what is near you. Instead of asking, “Which distant region should I cross next?” it often asks, “What can I interact with in this room, courtyard, or small region?” A short walk can reveal a hidden passage, a character, a puzzle, and a collectible.

Super Mario Odyssey illustrates this middle ground. Mario travels among separate kingdoms, but each kingdom is a dense playground of movement challenges, characters, secrets, and Power Moons. The immediate environment supplies constant prompts for experimentation while the wider game maintains a comprehensible objective: collect enough Power Moons to power the Odyssey and open new destinations.

Clear progression without strict linearity

“Nintendo-style” should not be treated as a synonym for linear or easy. A game can offer a legible progression loop while letting you decide how to complete the current area. You may know that collecting more items opens the next kingdom, yet still choose which local challenges to attempt first.

Top-down adventures can be even more flexible than their compact maps suggest. In Nintendo’s 2024 developer interview about The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, producer Eiji Aonuma said the team wanted players to “think independently and try various things freely on their own, rather than following a set path.” The game’s central mechanic lets Zelda create copies of objects and monsters, then use those echoes to reach places, solve situations, and fight. The space is concentrated, but the problem-solving is not necessarily prescribed.

Why density feels different

Dense design creates a faster feedback loop. You notice an unusual object, test an ability, and receive an immediate result. This can make short sessions feel productive because a nearby interaction is usually available. The trade-off is that players seeking long journeys, changing landscapes, or the sensation of crossing a continent may find the scale insufficient.

Compare the two styles by the decision that matters to you

Decision Broad open-world tendency Concentrated adventure tendency
Exploration scale Long sightlines, distant destinations, and a large connected space Smaller regions or levels with many nearby things to inspect
Player direction You decide where to go and which available activity to approach first You follow a clearer progression loop while choosing how to explore the current area
Discovery Curiosity about what lies beyond the next ridge, landmark, or map marker Finding interactions, secrets, puzzles, and collectibles in a dense play space
Progress Several possible routes through quests or objectives A comprehensible structure, such as collecting enough items to open the next region
Guidance You are comfortable with self-navigation and setting personal goals You benefit from clearer prompts or optional help without giving up discovery

This comparison describes design tendencies, not rules that apply to every game marketed under either label.

A step-by-step preference test

1. Decide whether route planning sounds fun

Imagine opening a map with several plausible destinations. Would you enjoy choosing one, changing course after spotting something else, and returning later when a new ability changes what is possible? If yes, broad open-world design is likely to suit you.

If that scenario sounds like homework, favor a game that keeps the next region, puzzle set, or collection target visible. You can still wander, but the game does more of the scheduling.

2. Choose your preferred kind of discovery

Open-world discovery is often about distance: a shape on the horizon, an unexplored road, or a landmark whose purpose is unknown. Concentrated discovery is about density: an object that behaves oddly, a suspicious gap in a wall, or a nearby character who hints at a secret.

Neither is more sophisticated. They simply reward different attention spans. Pick the first if you enjoy anticipation and travel; pick the second if you enjoy inspecting and testing what is directly in front of you.

3. Check how much structure you want around progress

Ask what would feel satisfying after an hour. Do you want to have chosen your own chain of quests, even if it is not the intended order? Or do you want to know that a set number of collectibles, solved rooms, or completed levels is moving you toward a visible unlock?

Super Mario Odyssey demonstrates that these preferences can coexist. Its kingdoms invite free-form local exploration, while Power Moons provide a clear reason to keep searching and a measurable way to open new destinations.

4. Consider your tolerance for missed content

In a self-directed world, you may walk past a quest, overlook a shrine, or leave a region unfinished. Some players enjoy returning with new knowledge; others dislike wondering whether they have missed an important step. A concentrated structure can reduce that uncertainty by grouping objectives into a smaller, more readable area.

5. Decide whether optional assistance matters

If you like exploration but do not want navigation or recovery to become a barrier, check the game’s help settings before starting. Super Mario Odyssey offers Regular and Assist Mode. Assist Mode adds recovery support and map arrows, giving you more direction without removing the game’s kingdoms, collectibles, or local interactions.

Three games that show the spectrum

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: destination freedom

Breath of the Wild is the clearest example here of a broad, self-directed structure. Its design vision emphasizes going anywhere and tackling quests and shrines in any order. The appeal is not merely the map’s size; it is the permission to decide what counts as the next objective.

Choose this model if you enjoy making a plan, abandoning it when curiosity intervenes, and defining progress for yourself. Be prepared for less certainty about the “correct” sequence and more responsibility for navigation.

Super Mario Odyssey: open-ended kingdoms with a collectible loop

In Super Mario Odyssey, Mario travels among kingdoms with Cappy, while Power Moons fuel the Odyssey and unlock additional destinations. Nintendo’s description highlights hidden collectibles, environmental interaction, and exploration inside each kingdom.

Director Kenta Motokura explained the distinction in a June 2017 TIME interview: “When I think about comparing Zelda and Mario in those terms, I think of Zelda as this really big world where you see something far off and you want to try to figure out how to get there, whereas the kind of worlds that we’re creating in Mario are about the thing that’s right in front of you and how you interact with that.”

That makes Odyssey a strong choice for players who want freedom at the local level but a clear collectible-based reason to continue. It is less about crossing a continuous wilderness and more about exhausting the possibilities of a vivid, bounded playground.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom: compact spaces, flexible solutions

Echoes of Wisdom uses a top-down presentation and a mechanic in which Zelda creates copies of objects and monsters. Those echoes can help her reach places, solve situations, and fight. The design goal, according to Aonuma’s 2024 developer interview, was to encourage independent thinking and experimentation rather than a single set path.

This is the better fit if you want the satisfaction of discovering your own solution but prefer rooms, areas, and objectives that remain close at hand. Its example also explains why “Nintendo-style” cannot be used as a synonym for straightforward or restrictive: a compact world can still support substantial player freedom.

Guidance, accessibility, and control options

Use assistance as a pacing choice

Optional guidance is not a measure of skill. It changes how much effort goes into orientation and recovery. In Super Mario Odyssey, Assist Mode provides recovery support and map arrows. That can help when you want to focus on movement, collecting, and discovery rather than remembering every route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing a game, look for settings that address the specific friction you experience: directional hints, recovery after a mistake, or clearer map information. A game can remain exploratory even when it supplies more signposting.

Separate solo requirements from optional co-play

Nintendo’s product information for Super Mario Odyssey lists local co-play and notes that compatible controllers are needed for multiplayer; additional controllers may be sold separately. Treat a second controller as an optional purchase for the co-play mode, not as a general requirement for the solo adventure.

Common mismatches and how to avoid them

“I want freedom” but dislike unmarked objectives

You may want freedom inside an area rather than freedom across an entire continent. In that case, choose a game with self-contained kingdoms or regions, collectible objectives, and optional assistance. Super Mario Odyssey represents this compromise more closely than a fully self-directed wilderness.

“I want a big world” but dislike long travel

Visual scale does not guarantee satisfying exploration. If your favorite part is examining nearby objects and solving environmental problems, a compact adventure may deliver more meaningful interactions per minute than a large map. Focus on interaction density, not map size alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I want a clear story” but do not want a rigid route

Look for a visible progression loop rather than a strictly linear level order. Collectibles that unlock regions, or a set of local objectives that can be completed in several sequences, can provide narrative momentum without dictating every step.

“Nintendo-style” means easy

The label describes a family resemblance in presentation, pacing, or interaction design; it does not establish a universal difficulty level. Echoes of Wisdom’s object-copying system, for example, is built around experimentation and independent solutions. Judge a specific game by its mechanics and assistance options, not by the label.

A practical checklist before you choose

  • Do I want to select distant destinations, or inspect a dense area full of nearby possibilities?
  • Would I rather set my own objective order or receive a visible next goal?
  • Is discovery more exciting when it involves travel, or when it involves testing an object, ability, or puzzle?
  • Do I enjoy returning to places after gaining new tools?
  • How much map reading and route planning am I willing to do?
  • Would optional arrows or recovery support improve my experience?
  • Am I buying for solo play, or do I need compatible controllers for local co-play?
  • Do I want a continuous world, separate kingdoms, or top-down areas?

If most of your answers point toward destinations, route choice, and self-set goals, choose a broad open-world game. If they point toward nearby interactions, clear collections, and flexible solutions within bounded areas, choose a concentrated Nintendo-style adventure. If the answers are mixed, select a hybrid such as Super Mario Odyssey, which combines exploratory kingdoms with a legible Power Moon progression loop.

How to make the choice at the store or in a digital library

Check the edition and platform details

Nintendo lists Super Mario Odyssey in both Switch Game Card and download editions, with an original release date of 27 October 2017. Confirm the edition available in your region, current stock, and current price before buying; those details can change independently of the game’s design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read feature descriptions for structure, not marketing labels

Look for concrete wording: kingdoms, shrines, quests, collectibles, top-down areas, object copies, local co-play, or assistance modes. These details reveal how exploration and progression work more reliably than a broad label such as “adventure” or “open world.”

Match the first hour to your preferred pace

Consider what you want the opening session to teach you. A broad open world may introduce a region and then ask you to choose your direction. A concentrated adventure may introduce a mechanic and immediately offer several nearby ways to test it. Choose the opening rhythm you are most likely to enjoy repeatedly, not merely the largest feature on the box.

The bottom-line choice

Pick an open-world game when the pleasure is deciding where to go and creating your own sequence of activities. Pick a Nintendo-style adventure when you want richly arranged spaces, a clear progression loop, and freedom to experiment without managing a huge itinerary. Remember that the best examples sit between those poles: Breath of the Wild maximizes destination freedom, Super Mario Odyssey makes compact exploration collectible-driven, and Echoes of Wisdom shows how a top-down format can still invite independent solutions.
