Choose Old School RuneScape (OSRS) if you want a distinct game rooted in the 2007 version of RuneScape, with community polling influencing new content and a deliberately old-school identity. Choose RuneScape 3 (RS3)—which Jagex generally labels simply “RuneScape”—if you want the modern continuation, a broader skill and quest ecosystem, and a choice between Evolution of Combat and Legacy combat.
You do not have to make a permanent account-level choice. One RuneScape account can access both games, but each has a separate profile: character information, stats, items and progress do not transfer. The most reliable decision is therefore practical rather than theoretical: try the core loop in each version, then continue in the one whose progression, combat and development style you prefer.
What you are actually choosing
OSRS and RS3 are separate games that share the RuneScape name and account ecosystem. Jagex launched OSRS in 2013 as a backup version based on RuneScape as it existed in 2007. It has since developed into its own game rather than remaining a museum piece. Jagex describes its updates as community-led, with proposed content put to player polls.

“RuneScape 3” is the common player term for the modern game. Jagex’s own pages usually call it “RuneScape” and present it as the version with modern systems and a large amount of accumulated content. The two versions are not two graphics settings for one character. They have different profiles, economies, progression paths and content schedules.

Neither is objectively better. The useful question is which game loop you want to repeat for hundreds of hours: OSRS’s old-school progression and poll-driven direction, or RS3’s modern systems, larger skill menu and configurable combat.

Choose Old School RuneScape if these priorities sound like you
You want a game with a strong 2007-era identity
OSRS starts from the rules, presentation and progression philosophy associated with RuneScape in 2007. That does not mean every current feature is frozen at that date. Jagex says the game has evolved into a distinct experience, and its current join page describes continuing development. You are choosing an old-school design direction, not literally an untouched 2007 server.
This distinction matters for returning players. Nostalgia can tell you whether the atmosphere appeals to you, but your remembered 2007 character, items and stats are not automatically waiting in OSRS or RS3. You must identify the profile that contains the progress you want.

Jagex says OSRS proposals are put to the community in polls. Its official join page says more than 1,000 questions have been polled since the game’s 2013 release and that a proposal passes at 75% or higher. That threshold is a defining part of OSRS’s development identity: the player base is not merely reacting to finished updates, but is asked to approve proposed changes.
A poll model is not the same as a promise that every popular idea will appear or that every player will agree with every result. It does give OSRS a different relationship between the community and the game’s direction. If you want your preferred version of RuneScape to be shaped through this kind of formal approval process, OSRS is the closer fit.

You prefer the OSRS progression and endgame menu
Jagex’s current OSRS join page lists 23 skills and specifically highlights quests, raids and bosses. That combination points to a progression loop in which long-term skill development supports access to combat challenges and other activities. The important choice is not simply the number 23; it is whether that narrower, recognizable menu feels motivating rather than limiting.
OSRS can suit a player who enjoys setting a focused target—raising a skill, preparing for a quest, or working toward a raid or boss—and repeating the game’s established systems to reach it. If a smaller, more clearly bounded set of skills helps you understand what to do next, OSRS may feel easier to own as a long-term hobby.
Choose RuneScape 3 if these priorities sound like you
You want the modern RuneScape continuation
RS3 is the version Jagex presents as modern RuneScape. It is the natural starting point if you want the current continuation of the game rather than the separate 2007-based branch. Its content framework emphasizes unlocking equipment, locations, activities and quests as your character advances.
That breadth can be an advantage for players who like having several kinds of goals available at once. It can also feel less immediately focused than OSRS. Before choosing, decide whether a large menu of systems energizes you or makes it harder to identify a first priority.
You want more skills and a broader progression menu
Jagex’s dedicated RuneScape Skills guide, crawled on October 11, 2026, lists 29 skills. A separate Jagex marketing page says 28, so the official pages are not perfectly consistent. Treat the count as a contextual snapshot rather than a permanent specification; the dedicated skills guide is the more appropriate reference when you need the current list.

The practical implication is that RS3 presents more named progression tracks than the 23 listed on OSRS’s current join page. More tracks can provide more ways to specialize, alternate activities and set goals. It also means you should expect a wider set of systems to learn. Choose RS3 for the breadth itself, not because a higher number automatically makes a game better.

You want to choose between two combat modes
RS3’s Evolution of Combat uses abilities, while Legacy combat uses regular auto-attacks and some weapon special attacks. Jagex’s support documentation stresses that combat mode and interface are separate choices: you can mix and match the interfaces and combat modes to suit your preferences.
This makes the RS3 decision more nuanced than “modern action combat versus old turn-based combat.” EoC asks you to manage abilities through its interface. Legacy preserves a more conventional attack pattern while remaining a mode inside modern RuneScape. If you are unsure, RS3 gives you a way to test both approaches without installing a different game.

There is no universal winner because the two versions solve different problems. OSRS offers its own established combat identity. RS3 gives you an explicit choice between EoC abilities and Legacy auto-attacks with some weapon special attacks, plus independent interface settings.

When testing, judge combat by the decisions you make repeatedly, not by the first few minutes of animations or interface unfamiliarity. Ask whether you enjoy planning ability use, watching a conventional attack cycle, or learning OSRS’s distinct rhythm. A mode that feels awkward only because its interface is unfamiliar deserves a second short session before you reject it.
How progression differs in practice
Skill counts are useful, but they are not a difficulty ranking
The official snapshots give OSRS 23 skills and RS3 29 in the dedicated guide. Those numbers help describe the size of each progression menu, but they do not prove that one game has deeper or faster progression. Skills can be pursued independently, combined with quests, or used to unlock other activities. Your preference for a concise or expansive menu is more actionable than the raw count.

OSRS emphasizes a focused old-school route
OSRS’s official join page groups skills with quests, raids and bosses. This makes it a good fit if you enjoy a recognizable path from basic training to specific combat or quest goals. The community-poll model also means the game’s future is discussed as an extension of this identity, rather than as a wholesale replacement of it.
RS3 emphasizes a larger web of unlocks
Jagex’s RuneScape guide frames progression around unlocking equipment, locations, activities and quests. This is attractive if you want several parallel projects and a world in which skill advancement opens different kinds of content. The trade-off is cognitive load: you may need to spend more time deciding which system deserves attention next.
Use your first sessions to observe your own behavior. If you naturally set one clear target and enjoy repeating a focused route, OSRS is a strong signal. If you keep switching between skills and enjoy discovering how systems connect, RS3 is likely to hold your attention better.
Can I use the same account, and does progress transfer?
Yes, one RuneScape account can access both versions. No, a single character’s progress does not move between them. Jagex Support states: “Profile progress is completely independent, meaning that character information, stats, and items do not transfer between the two games.” Read the full explanation in RuneScape and Old School.
Think of the account as the access container and each game as a separate profile inside it. Logging into the same account does not merge banks, levels, quests, achievements or equipment. A returning player should therefore check both versions before assuming that a familiar character is missing.
A returning-player checklist
- Sign in with the account you used previously rather than creating a new account immediately.
- Open both game versions and identify where your remembered character, stats or items appear.
- Decide whether you want to continue that existing profile or deliberately start the other game’s separate progression.
- Do not transfer or sell anything expecting it to become available in the other version; the profiles are independent.
Does membership work for both games?
Jagex Support says membership applies to both versions for a character and unlocks additional game content. That means membership is not a reason by itself to choose OSRS over RS3 or vice versa. It does not make progress portable: the character and its progression remain separate even when membership access covers both versions.

How to test both versions before committing
A short, deliberate comparison is more useful than watching trailers or choosing from screenshots. Use the same account, play each version long enough to encounter its normal interface and progression decisions, and record which activities you voluntarily continue.
- Confirm the account. Sign in to the RuneScape account you intend to use. If you are returning, note which version contains the profile you remember.
- Open OSRS first or second without treating the order as a verdict. Spend a session learning its interface, advancing a skill, and following one quest or combat goal. Notice whether the old-school pacing feels satisfying or restrictive.
- Open RS3 and inspect both combat approaches. Try EoC abilities, then test Legacy mode if you prefer conventional attacks. Remember that Jagex says the interface and combat settings can be mixed.
- Compare goal-setting. In each game, write down the next three things you genuinely want to accomplish. A useful game usually generates goals without requiring you to force enthusiasm.
- Check the progression menu. Compare how the skill lists, quests and activities present themselves. Decide whether you prefer OSRS’s more focused menu or RS3’s broader set of tracks.
- Choose a home profile. Continue in the version whose routine you want to repeat. You can keep the other version available, but do not expect the two characters to share progress.

Pitfalls that lead to a bad choice
Assuming OSRS is frozen in 2007
OSRS began from a 2007 backup, but Jagex says it has evolved into its own game and continues to use community polling. Choose it for its current old-school direction, not for an assumption that no new content exists.
Assuming RS3 forces you to use EoC
RS3 includes Legacy combat as well as EoC, and Jagex says the interface and combat selections can be mixed. Test the mode that matches your preference before ruling out the modern game.
Counting skills without considering how you play
The current official pages list 23 OSRS skills and 29 in the dedicated RS3 guide, while another RS3 marketing page says 28. The discrepancy shows why the count is a snapshot, not a quality score. Focus on whether the available goals motivate you.
Expecting one character to exist in both games
Shared account access does not mean shared character data. Check the profile in each version before investing time or membership.
Choosing from a subscription price alone
Membership terms and regional pricing can change, and membership does not merge progress. Decide on the game loop first, then verify the current subscription terms.
The practical verdict
Start with OSRS when the old-school identity, 23-skill progression snapshot, raids and bosses, and community polling are the reasons you want to play. Start with RS3 when modern RuneScape, the larger skill menu, broad unlock structure or a choice between EoC and Legacy combat matters more. If those descriptions both appeal to you, use the same account to sample each version and continue with the profile whose everyday decisions you look forward to making; the choice of client is reversible, but the progress you build remains separate.
