Marantz Pure Direct is Direct playback with an extra step: it turns off the receiver’s main-unit display and analog video circuit. Marantz says this helps suppress noise sources, but its documentation does not establish that every listener will hear better sound. The mode also disables sound adjustments, so whether it suits you depends on what your receiver supports and which features you use.
Direct vs. Pure Direct: what changes?
Marantz describes Direct as playing source audio without AV/AVR processing. Pure Direct adds the shutdown of the main-unit display and analog video circuit. The table reflects Marantz’s support explanation and the cited model manuals; details can differ across receivers.
| Question | Direct | Pure Direct |
|---|---|---|
| Basic operation | Plays source audio without AV/AVR processing, according to Marantz Support. | Direct playback plus shutdown of the display and analog video circuit. |
| Why shut down the extra circuits? | Not stated in the cited support comparison. | Marantz says the shutdown suppresses noise sources that may affect sound quality; this is the stated design rationale, not a guarantee of an audible improvement. |
| Sound features | Listed processing features are unavailable; the exact list depends on the model. | Listed processing features are unavailable; consult the model’s manual for its specific restrictions. |
| Display behavior | Not stated as off in the cited comparison. | The NR1711 and SR5015 manuals say the display goes dark. The NR1711 manual says it turns off after about five seconds. |
| Video behavior | Not established by the cited passages. | The NR1711 manual says video output in Pure Direct is limited to HDMI signals. |
Marantz’s NR1711 manual describes the added shutdown this way: “This mode turns off the main unit display and analog video circuit. Doing so suppresses noise sources that affect sound quality.” That sentence explains Marantz’s design intent; it does not quantify noise reduction or prove a universal audible benefit.

Direct and Pure Direct bypass listed processing and sound-adjustment features. Depending on the model, these can include tone controls, room correction, dynamic volume, or other Marantz processing options. The feature list is not identical across all receivers, so check the mode section of your exact model’s owner manual rather than assuming another receiver behaves the same way.
#1 Best Overall
- Most musical sound: Tuned by the Marantz Sound Master to exacting standards, the NR1510 delivers the rich, warm character that has defined Marantz since 1953
- Slimline design: At half the height of a traditional AV receiver, the NR1510 brings legendary Marantz performance to spaces where full-size components simply cannot go
- Powerful five-channel amplifier: A high-current discrete amplifier delivers 50 watts per channel across all five channels—the foundation of precise, nuanced sound
- High-resolution surround sound: Full support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio means every soundtrack is reproduced with fidelity and depth
- Versatile connectivity: Six HDMI inputs plus analog, digital, and phono inputs make the NR1510 a natural fit for virtually any home setup
Marantz’s support listing also says Direct and Pure Direct bypass AD/DA conversions on its AV/AVR models regardless of whether the input is RCA or XLR. This is Marantz’s statement about those products, not an independently verified measurement, and it should not be generalized to other product categories.
When should you try Pure Direct?
Try it when you want playback with the receiver’s listed processing and adjustments unavailable, and you do not need the display or analog video circuit active. Compare it with your usual mode using the same source and volume, and decide based on what you hear and which features matter to you. The available documentation does not establish that Pure Direct will sound better for every system or listener.
Rank #2
- 75 W of pure Marantz power: A fully discrete Class A/B amplifier with carefully selected components reproduces the warmth, detail, dynamics, and three-dimensional spaciousness of the original recording
- Serious home theater, simplified: Enjoy the power and immersiveness of a true home theater experience with only two speakers and up to two subwoofers, no surround sound required
- Sound Master tuned: Meticulously engineered and tuned by the Marantz Sound Master in Japan, STEREO 70s delivers The Most Musical Sound with the legendary artisanship and storied heritage that define Marantz
- Slim where it counts: At just 4.1 inches tall, STEREO 70s fits elegantly where full-size AV receivers can't, without compromising on power, connectivity, or craftsmanship
- More ways to listen: A phono input for your turntable, wired and Bluetooth headphone outputs, Zone 2 audio, and Speaker A+B connectivity make STEREO 70s the heart of your home
If you depend on room correction, tone adjustment, dynamic volume, or another feature that your model disables in Pure Direct, choose a mode that keeps that feature available. Pure Direct is not automatically the best choice simply because it disables more circuits.
How do you select Direct or Pure Direct?
The controls depend on the receiver. In the cited NR1711 and SR5015 manuals, pressing the remote’s PURE button selects Direct or Pure Direct; the SR5015 manual also documents using the main unit’s PURE DIRECT button. Treat those as model-specific examples, not universal instructions.

Does Pure Direct guarantee better sound?
No. Marantz says shutting down the display and analog video circuit suppresses noise sources, but the cited support material and manuals do not provide a universal audible-improvement claim or comparative measurement. Whether the mode sounds preferable depends on the receiver, source, setup, and the processing you normally use.
