Choose Immich first if your priority is automatic backup from selected Android or iPhone albums through the photo server’s own app. Choose PhotoPrism if you prefer a browser-first catalog with extensive filters, metadata handling, maps and shareable secret links, and you are comfortable pairing it with a separate phone-backup app such as PhotoSync. Before migrating, verify your server, database and storage capacity, and test both products with copies of your real photos and videos. Neither application is a complete backup strategy by itself.

Immich or PhotoPrism: the short decision

Both applications turn a home server or NAS into a self-hosted photo and video library. The practical difference is the workflow around that library:

  • Pick Immich for an integrated phone-backup workflow. Its official Android and iOS apps can back up selected device albums, skip duplicates using checksums, and optionally mirror albums on the server. iOS still controls when background work runs, so Background App Refresh must be enabled. Immich mobile-backup documentation
  • Pick PhotoPrism for browser-led cataloging and filtering. Its documented discovery tools combine labels, location, resolution, color, chroma and quality filters, with automatic labeling, face recognition, metadata extraction and maps. PhotoPrism identifies PhotoSync as a way to back up iOS and Android devices in the background. PhotoPrism features PhotoPrism overview
  • Pick based on your server, not marketing minimums. Immich publishes a higher memory baseline, while PhotoPrism publishes a lower one but still requires swap and a 64-bit operating system. These figures are vendor requirements, not a controlled speed comparison.
  • Keep independent copies. Immich explicitly recommends a 3-2-1 backup plan. Originals, the application database and recovery information must be protected separately from the running service.

There is no documented head-to-head benchmark proving that either product is faster, more accurate at face or object recognition, or more reliable on a particular NAS. Treat the choice as a workflow and operations decision.

Which is better for backing up photos from a phone?

Immich’s integrated mobile backup

Immich documents official mobile apps for Android and iOS. In the app, you can select which device albums are uploaded, configure Wi-Fi-only behavior, and enable server-side album mirroring. Checksums allow already-uploaded files to be skipped instead of creating another copy. This is the clearest reason to start with Immich when the main requirement is “take pictures on my phone and have them appear on my own server.”

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

On iOS, background upload timing is not fully configurable by Immich: “iOS automatically manages background tasks; the app cannot control when the background upload task will run.” Enable Background App Refresh, keep the device connected to the server when possible, and verify uploads manually after changing iOS power or network settings. Android behavior still depends on the phone’s battery-management policies and network access.

PhotoPrism with a separate backup app

PhotoPrism’s feature information points users to PhotoSync for background backup from iOS and Android. That can work well, but it creates an extra component to configure, update and troubleshoot. Test the actual phone, Wi-Fi or VPN path, destination folder and background permissions before committing your archive to this workflow.

Phone-backup question Immich PhotoPrism
First-party mobile apps Official Android and iOS apps are documented. PhotoPrism highlights PhotoSync for phone backup.
Album selection Selected device albums can be backed up. Depends on the separate backup-app configuration.
Duplicate handling Checksum-based duplicate skipping is documented. Verify behavior in your chosen backup workflow.
Background limits iOS schedules background tasks; Background App Refresh is required. Depends on PhotoSync, the operating system and the server connection.

How the browsing, search and organization models differ

Immich

Immich’s project feature list includes metadata, object, face and CLIP search, along with albums and shared albums. The model is familiar to people who want a timeline, albums and machine-assisted search in one application. The documentation does not establish recognition accuracy or search speed against PhotoPrism.

PhotoPrism

PhotoPrism emphasizes a catalog that can be narrowed with combined filters for labels, location, resolution, color, chroma and quality. Its official overview also lists automatic labels, face recognition, metadata extraction, maps and secret-link album sharing. Secret links can have expiration dates and recipients do not need to register, which is useful for sharing a temporary event album.

For a meaningful choice, write down your real searches—such as “RAW files from last summer,” “videos from a specific place,” or “photos containing a particular person”—and run them against a representative test library. A feature list cannot tell you which system will classify your own images better.

Formats, metadata and migration risk

Immich’s project feature table lists RAW support and metadata views including EXIF and map information. PhotoPrism lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, HEIF, HEIC, MP4, MOV, WebP, WebM and RAW support, plus extraction and merging of Exif, XMP and Google Photos JSON.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those lists are not an identical compatibility matrix. Before importing an archive, make a test set containing:

  • the camera RAW formats you actually use;
  • HEIF or HEIC files from your phone;
  • long and short videos, including MOV or MP4;
  • files with edited EXIF dates and GPS data;
  • XMP sidecars and any Google Photos JSON metadata;
  • duplicates, burst shots and filenames with non-ASCII characters.

Import copies, inspect dates, locations, captions, orientation, faces and albums, then export or restore a sample. Keep the original archive untouched until you can verify the result.

Server requirements: will it run on your NAS?

Published baselines

Requirement Immich PhotoPrism
Memory 6 GB RAM minimum; 8 GB recommended. 3 GB physical memory minimum.
CPU 2 CPU cores minimum; 4 recommended. 2 CPU cores minimum.
Other requirements Docker Compose is required by the requirements page. 64-bit operating system and at least 4 GB of swap.
Database guidance Postgres database is typically 1–3 GB; database files should be on local SSD storage rather than a network share. SQLite and MariaDB 10.5.12+ are supported; SQLite is discouraged for scale or high performance, and MySQL 8 support has been discontinued.
Deployment options Download documentation lists Docker Compose, Kubernetes and links to community NAS guides. Docker is recommended, with stable multi-architecture images documented.

See Immich’s requirements, Immich download options and PhotoPrism setup documentation for current architecture and installation details. A NAS that barely meets a published minimum may still feel slow during indexing, face analysis, video transcoding or concurrent use. Check available RAM, CPU architecture, Docker support, filesystem permissions and whether SSD space is available for the database.

Capacity planning

Immich says generated thumbnails and transcoded video increase library size by about 10–20% on average. Its database is typically another 1–3 GB, with growth depending on users, metadata and activity. Leave additional headroom for temporary files, upgrades and a second copy. PhotoPrism’s exact footprint depends on originals, index data, thumbnails, previews and database choice, so measure your test import rather than sizing only from the original file total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deployment choices and operating burden

Self-hosting on existing hardware

Docker Compose is the documented Immich requirement, while PhotoPrism recommends Docker. On a home server or NAS, use a supported 64-bit architecture, persistent volumes and a filesystem with enough free space for originals, generated media, database files and backups. Do not place a database on a slow or unreliable network share when the product documentation advises local SSD storage.

Kubernetes and managed alternatives

Immich’s download page also lists Kubernetes and community NAS installation paths. PhotoPrism’s setup material names PikaPods and DigitalOcean availability for readers who do not want to operate every server component. Managed hosting changes the maintenance trade-off but does not remove the need to understand export, account recovery and independent backups.

Updates and maintenance

Both projects are actively maintained, so labels, requirements and deployment instructions can change. Before an upgrade, back up the database and originals, read the current release notes and confirm that your container configuration and storage paths are documented. Keep a rollback plan instead of treating an in-place update as a backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sharing and access control

Immich lists albums and shared albums. PhotoPrism documents secret album links that can expire and do not require recipient registration. If family accounts, private albums or temporary links are central to your use case, test the current permission model with the exact users and devices involved. The reviewed feature summaries do not establish complete parity for roles, download rights, link revocation or audit history.

Price and the real cost of ownership

Build a safe comparison before migrating

  1. Inventory the archive. Record total bytes, file count, RAW and video formats, sidecars, duplicates, albums and the number of phone users.
  2. Check the server. Confirm RAM, CPU cores, 64-bit architecture, Docker support, available SSD space, swap and filesystem permissions against the current Immich and PhotoPrism documentation.
  3. Create a disposable test library. Use copies of representative originals; never make the first import your only archive.
  4. Test phone backup. Select two or three albums, include new photos and videos, disable and re-enable Wi-Fi, and verify duplicate handling and background behavior. On iOS, confirm Background App Refresh.
  5. Test discovery. Run the searches you actually need, then inspect dates, locations, labels, faces, maps, RAW previews and video playback.
  6. Test sharing. Create an album for a second account or an external recipient, check download behavior and, for PhotoPrism, verify expiration of a secret link.
  7. Test recovery. Back up the database and upload/original directory, then restore to a separate instance or documented test location. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption.
  8. Choose only after the trial. Keep the original archive and an independent backup while you decide; do not delete source files to reclaim space immediately after import.

Backup and disaster recovery

Immich’s project README states: “Always follow 3-2-1 backup plan for your precious photos and videos!” That means at least three copies, on two different types of media, with one copy stored off-site. One NAS, one USB drive beside it or one cloud-synced folder is not automatically a 3-2-1 plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect both the original image/video directory and the application data needed to rebuild the catalog. Immich’s quick-start guidance warns that its database contains metadata and user information and that the image/video upload directory needs manual backup. Schedule backups, monitor failures and periodically perform a restore test. For PhotoPrism, use the same principle even though the reviewed setup material does not define a complete disaster-recovery procedure: preserve originals, database data, sidecars and configuration independently of the live container.

Common failure points and fixes

Phone uploads stop

  • Check that the phone can reach the server over the current Wi-Fi, VPN or reverse proxy path.
  • On iOS, enable Background App Refresh and remember that iOS controls scheduling.
  • Review battery-optimization rules on Android.
  • Confirm the destination volume is writable and has free space.
  • Run a foreground upload with a small album to separate network problems from background scheduling.

Indexing fills the disk

  • Include Immich’s documented 10–20% average allowance for thumbnails and transcoded video, plus database and backup space.
  • Check whether a video-transcoding or thumbnail job is still running before assuming files are duplicated.
  • Move database files to suitable local SSD storage where supported, and expand the volume before it reaches capacity.

Search results look wrong

  • Confirm indexing and face/object analysis have completed.
  • Inspect EXIF dates, GPS data and sidecars in the original files.
  • Repeat the test with a known sample and record the exact query; do not infer recognition accuracy from one photo.

A NAS deployment is unstable

  • Verify CPU architecture and container images.
  • Check memory and swap against the published baseline.
  • Review permissions on originals, generated-media and database volumes.
  • Use the product’s current NAS or Docker instructions rather than an outdated compose file.

Final recommendation by reader profile

Your priority Best first candidate Why
Automatic backup from selected phone albums Immich Integrated Android/iOS apps, album selection, checksum deduplication and optional mirroring.
Browser catalog with extensive combined filters PhotoPrism Filter-oriented discovery, metadata extraction, maps, automatic labels and face recognition.
Temporary sharing without recipient accounts PhotoPrism Documented expiring secret album links.
Albums and shared albums in the same mobile-centered workflow Immich Shared albums and first-party mobile backup are both documented.
Lowest published server memory baseline PhotoPrism, provisionally It lists 3 GB physical memory, but requires swap and this is not a performance comparison.
Existing Kubernetes deployment Immich, subject to testing Its download page lists Kubernetes; verify the current installation path and storage design.

Start with Immich when phone backup is the deciding workflow. Start with PhotoPrism when catalog filtering and browser-based organization matter more than having the backup client built into the same project. In both cases, validate your hardware and representative archive first, and maintain a separate 3-2-1 backup system.
