Start with native rendering, then test the game’s built-in FSR, and consider HelixSR only when the title and handheld are demonstrably compatible. Native rendering is the clearest baseline when your device can hold the target resolution and frame rate. FSR is usually the lowest-friction fallback because it is integrated by the game developer. HelixSR can be useful for specific AMD/Linux configurations, but it is an unofficial compatibility layer with a narrower, explicitly tested scope.

There is no evidence that one option is universally fastest or best-looking. Make the choice in the same game, scene, output resolution, graphics preset and frame-rate target, and judge total game performance, frame pacing and image stability—not an isolated upscaling-pass time.

What each rendering option actually does

Native rendering

With native rendering, the game produces its image at the display resolution you select instead of reconstructing that image from a lower internal resolution. There is no temporal upscaling pass to configure, so it gives you a useful visual reference for detail, aliasing, UI clarity and motion stability.

Native is not automatically the fastest choice or the right choice for every handheld. The practical question is whether your device can sustain the resolution and frame-rate target in the particular game, at the graphics settings you want. The available evidence does not establish a general performance penalty or a universal quality ranking for native rendering.

FSR

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a family of upscaling technologies integrated into games. The game exposes the supported FSR version and quality modes, and its implementation determines how motion data, depth, jitter, reactive masks, transparency and post-processing are handled.

FSR 3 documentation treats upscaling and frame generation as separate parts of the system. A menu item that mentions FSR does not, by itself, tell you whether frame generation is enabled. Check the individual toggles and the game’s description. Results also vary because two games can integrate the same FSR generation differently.

HelixSR

HelixSR is an unofficial project that runs NVIDIA’s DLSS network on AMD GPUs by presenting an FSR 3.1-compatible interface to supported games. The project describes this as “NVIDIA’s network running on different hardware, not a newly trained model.” It is therefore a compatibility project, not a new neural model trained for your handheld.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project’s README documents Linux and Steam Deck-oriented setup paths, including a direct FSR 3.1 DLL replacement and an OptiScaler route for games that accept DLSS, XeSS or FSR 2 inputs. A DLSS-loader method is also described as experimental. Compatibility depends on the game, API, driver stack, Proton or Windows environment and the exact files the title expects.

The decision in one minute

Use this first When it makes sense What to verify
Native rendering The handheld can sustain the target output resolution and frame rate. Stable frame pacing in demanding scenes, not only the average frame rate.
Game-integrated FSR Native misses your target and the game exposes a supported FSR mode. FSR version, quality mode, whether frame generation is a separate toggle, and UI or motion artifacts.
HelixSR The game lacks a satisfactory option and the project’s compatibility path matches your device and OS. HelixSR version, game-specific instructions, backup and rollback procedure, and whether your GPU/OS is outside the project’s tested scope.

If native already meets your target, there is little reason to add a compatibility layer merely because it is available. If native does not, FSR is the normal next experiment. HelixSR is a targeted experiment for users willing to manage per-game files and accept that success is not guaranteed.

Step 1: Define the target before changing a setting

Write down the outcome you are trying to achieve. A 60 fps target at 1280×800 is a different problem from a 40 fps target at 1920×1080, even on the same handheld.

  • Output resolution: Use the resolution the display or game presents to the player.
  • Frame-rate target: Choose a cap that matches your display and your tolerance for latency and uneven pacing.
  • Graphics settings: Record the preset, ray-tracing state, shadows, textures and any dynamic-resolution option.
  • Power and thermal state: Keep the handheld’s power limit, refresh rate and fan profile consistent while comparing modes.
  • Test scene: Select a repeatable area with motion, foliage, particles, thin geometry and readable UI text.

Without a fixed target, it is easy to mistake a higher average frame rate for a better experience, or to credit an upscaler for a change caused by a different graphics preset or frame cap.

Step 2: Test native rendering as your baseline

  1. Set the game to the display’s target output resolution.
  2. Disable FSR, HelixSR, frame generation and dynamic resolution if the game offers separate controls.
  3. Use the graphics settings you would realistically keep for play.
  4. Play the same test scene for long enough to include traversal and combat, not only a stationary view.
  5. Record average performance, noticeable dips, frame-time consistency, input response and image defects.

Keep this baseline even if it misses your target. It tells you what detail is available at full internal resolution and helps distinguish an upscaling artifact from a game-engine problem. If native reaches the target with acceptable pacing, it is the simplest configuration and avoids compatibility maintenance.

Step 3: Try the game’s own FSR implementation

Check which FSR features are actually present

Open the game’s graphics or display menu and identify the exact FSR version or mode. Note whether the menu separates upscaling from frame generation. In FSR 3 documentation, these are distinct systems: upscaling reconstructs an image from a lower internal resolution, while frame generation creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames and motion information.

Compare quality modes at the same output

Keep output resolution, graphics preset, camera location and frame-rate cap unchanged. Change only the upscaler mode. Inspect fine geometry, distant foliage, hair, wires, signage and moving characters. Then look at the HUD and subtitles while the camera moves; a mode that looks sharp in a still screenshot can produce shimmer, ghosting or unstable edges in motion.

Check integration details that affect results

AMD’s FSR 3 integration guidance highlights jitter patterns, post-processing placement, reactive and transparency/composition masks, and mip bias. These implementation choices affect temporal stability, transparency, particles and texture detail. Consequently, an “FSR” label is not a quality guarantee across games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure total game behavior

Use the game’s frame-time graph or a consistent overlay to watch the whole frame, not just the upscaling pass. Check traversal stutter, shader-compilation pauses, input latency and frame pacing. If frame generation is enabled, evaluate latency and pacing separately from the generated frame count; a larger displayed number does not automatically mean a more responsive game.

When HelixSR is worth trying

HelixSR is most relevant when you have an AMD GPU, a compatible game and a Linux-based setup for which the project’s documented route applies. The project identifies version 1.8.1 and says it was developed and tested on an AMD BC-250 with Linux/Mesa RADV. It explicitly says other GPUs and Windows were not tested by the project. That does not prove HelixSR cannot run elsewhere; it means you should treat other combinations as unverified rather than supported.

  • The game must expose an input path that matches one of HelixSR’s routes.
  • Your operating system, graphics API, driver and compatibility layer must match the game-specific instructions.
  • You should be comfortable restoring original files if the game fails to launch or renders incorrectly.
  • You need a reproducible way to compare the result with native rendering and the game’s own FSR mode.

Do not choose HelixSR solely because its name implies DLSS quality. The project runs the DLSS network through an FSR 3.1-compatible interface, and the final result still depends on the game’s motion vectors, exposure, UI composition and integration path.

HelixSR installation paths and safe rollback

The HelixSR README describes multiple routes. The exact files and launch method can vary by title, so follow the current project instructions for the game rather than applying a generic DLL recipe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Direct FSR 3.1 DLL replacement

  1. Confirm that the game uses the FSR 3.1 interface covered by the project’s instructions.
  2. Close the game and locate its installation directory through your launcher.
  3. Back up the original FSR 3.1 DLL exactly as instructed by the project.
  4. Place the HelixSR files where the README specifies, preserving the required filename and directory.
  5. Launch the game and verify that the upscaling option still appears and that the image renders correctly.
  6. Run the same test scene used for native and built-in FSR.

OptiScaler route

The README describes an OptiScaler route for games with DLSS, XeSS or FSR 2 inputs. This route is more dependent on the title’s existing upscaler interface and configuration. Follow the game-specific section, keep the original files available and avoid stacking multiple injection methods at once.

Experimental DLSS-loader method

A DLSS-loader method is identified as experimental. Use it only when you understand the additional failure modes and have a reliable rollback. Experimental status means the project does not present it as a generally dependable path.

Uninstall and restore

The project documents backups and provides an uninstaller. Before testing, note where the backup is stored and how to invoke the uninstaller. If the game stops launching, shows a black screen or displays broken UI, remove the replacement using the documented method or restore the original files, then verify the game without HelixSR before trying a different route.

How to compare image quality fairly

Make comparisons in a matched configuration. Use screenshots only as a supplement; temporal artifacts require motion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What to inspect What a difference looks like How to test
Fine detail Texture detail may soften or break into unstable patterns. Move toward fences, foliage, hair and distant text.
Temporal stability Edges shimmer, crawl or change apparent sharpness during camera movement. Pan slowly and then rotate quickly through the same scene.
Ghosting Trails or residual images follow moving characters or objects. Track a character across a contrasting background.
Transparency and particles Smoke, glass, rain or effects may flicker or disappear. Use a scene with alpha-tested foliage, effects and lighting changes.
UI composition HUD text, reticles or menus may be softened or incorrectly reconstructed. Read small text while moving and during camera cuts.
Motion and latency Frame generation can alter pacing or perceived responsiveness. Compare camera response and frame-time behavior with the same cap.

Record observations by mode and scene instead of declaring one technology “better” in general. A mode can be preferable at one output resolution and unacceptable at another, particularly when the internal resolution becomes very low.

Performance: why upscaling-pass timings are not FPS

HelixSR publishes selected GPU-time figures for its upscaling pass on the AMD BC-250 configuration. The project explicitly labels those numbers as upscaling-pass timings, not total game frame times. They cannot be quoted as whole-game frame rates, FPS gains or a head-to-head comparison with FSR or native rendering.

Total frame time also includes game simulation, animation, visibility, geometry, lighting, shadows, post-processing, driver work, presentation and possible synchronization waits. A faster upscaling pass may not change the final frame rate if another part of the frame is the bottleneck. Conversely, a mode that raises the average FPS can still feel worse if it introduces uneven frame delivery or latency.

For a useful handheld comparison, capture total frame time in the same scene, with the same cap, power limit, refresh rate and graphics settings. Repeat the run after the device reaches its normal operating temperature so that thermal throttling does not favor one test.

Compatibility and risk checklist

Game support

  • Does the title offer native FSR, and which version?
  • Does it use an FSR 3.1 interface, or an input supported by the OptiScaler route?
  • Does an anti-cheat system or launcher integrity check reject modified files?
  • Are there game updates that could replace or invalidate the files?

Device and operating system

  • Is the handheld running Linux, SteamOS-like software, or Windows?
  • Does its GPU and driver stack resemble the project’s documented AMD BC-250/Linux/Mesa RADV test environment?
  • Are you using a compatibility layer such as Proton, and does the game-specific guidance cover it?
  • Can you restore the original files without reinstalling the entire game?

Practical recovery

  • Keep a clean backup before replacing any DLL.
  • Change one variable at a time and record the original setting.
  • If a launch fails, remove the modification first; do not troubleshoot several injection layers simultaneously.
  • After a game patch, recheck the project README before reapplying files.

Confusing frame generation with upscaling

FSR 3 documentation describes them as distinct. Test and report them separately so that a generated-frame count is not mistaken for the cost or quality of the upscaler itself.

Using different output resolutions

Changing the output resolution changes the internal-resolution workload and the reconstruction problem. Keep the output fixed when comparing modes.

Judging from a menu or still image

Menus hide motion artifacts, frame pacing and transparency problems. Use a repeatable moving scene.

Generalizing HelixSR’s tested scope

The project’s named test configuration is AMD BC-250 with Linux/Mesa RADV, and Windows and other GPUs are stated as untested by the project. Treat an unlisted handheld as an experiment, not a verified compatibility result.

Reading an upscaler timer as a game benchmark

An upscaling-pass timer measures one part of a frame. It does not establish total game FPS or prove a universal advantage.

A practical decision tree

  1. Can native rendering hold your target? If yes, keep native unless a measured visual reason leads you elsewhere.
  2. If not, does the game provide FSR? Test its quality modes at the same output resolution and frame-rate target.
  3. Does FSR meet the target with acceptable artifacts? If yes, use it as the supported, lowest-maintenance solution.
  4. If FSR is unavailable or unsuitable, does HelixSR have a matching route? Check the project’s current README, game requirements and device/OS caveats.
  5. Can you back up and restore the game files? If not, do not proceed with a DLL replacement.
  6. Does HelixSR improve your complete experience? Compare total frame time, pacing, latency and moving-image quality. Keep it only if the measured result is better for your target.

What the evidence can and cannot establish

The available documentation supports a clear method, not a universal ranking. HelixSR is an unofficial way to run the DLSS network on AMD hardware through an FSR 3.1-compatible interface. AMD’s FSR 3 integration material explains why implementation details influence output. Neither source supplies independent, same-game, same-handheld benchmarks that establish HelixSR as faster or better than native rendering or built-in FSR across devices.

Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ is relevant to the platform context, but it does not turn every FSR or HelixSR configuration into verified Steam Deck support. For any particular handheld, the decisive evidence is your own matched test on the game and driver combination you actually use.
