Choose Bedrock when the required GPT-6 model, endpoint, routing option and region fit your existing AWS controls; choose the direct OpenAI API when its endpoint and features meet your needs with a simpler integration path. Neither route is universally faster, cheaper or better. The defensible choice depends on the exact model, API surface, geography, service tier, context length, caching pattern and measured workload.
Use the decision process below to compare equivalent deployments rather than comparing a Bedrock inference option with an unrelated direct-API tier. Model catalogs, regional availability and prices can change, so confirm the live documentation for your account before deployment.
Bedrock and the direct OpenAI API: what you are actually choosing
Both routes can expose OpenAI models, but they place the integration inside different service environments. On Bedrock, you select an AWS model entry and call the endpoint and inference path documented for that model. The GPT-6 Astra card, for example, documents Bedrock Runtime and Bedrock Mantle paths and separate inference identifiers. With the direct OpenAI API, you integrate with OpenAI’s own endpoint, account, quotas, billing and supported interfaces.
This is an architecture and operations decision, not a claim that one provider changes the model’s inherent quality. A model name alone is insufficient: the same family can have different IDs, context bands, routing choices, API support and prices.

A quick decision framework
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping an application within established AWS identity, networking, logging and billing practices | Bedrock | It may reduce the number of cloud control planes your team operates, provided the required model and endpoint are available in the permitted region. |
| A direct integration with OpenAI’s endpoint and current feature set | OpenAI API | The path can be simpler when your team already uses OpenAI APIs and does not need Bedrock-specific routing or controls. |
| A strict processing-location requirement | Whichever route documents a compliant location and routing mode | Check endpoint-level and account-level availability; do not infer geography from the provider name. |
| The lowest bill | Neither by default | Match model, tier, input and output volume, cache use, context band and routing before calculating cost. |
| The best latency or answer quality | Run a representative evaluation | The available material contains no comparative benchmark for a universal winner. |
Treat the table as a starting hypothesis. The selected model and endpoint still have to pass your technical, geographic, operational and economic checks.
Step 1: write down non-negotiable requirements
Before comparing prices, create a short requirement sheet. A route that fails one mandatory requirement should be eliminated even if its token rate looks attractive.
- Model: Record the exact GPT-6 variant, version and required context window. “GPT-6” is not a complete deployment specification.
- API surface: List the interface your code needs, such as the Responses API, Chat Completions, tool calls, structured output or streaming. Verify each feature for the chosen endpoint; AWS states that its API compatibility table describes endpoint capabilities and does not mean every API is available on every endpoint.
- Geography: Define where requests may be processed and whether cross-region inference is allowed. Include disaster-recovery regions, not just the primary region.
- Workload shape: Estimate requests per minute, input and output tokens, concurrency, peak-to-average ratio, cacheable prompt volume and the percentage of requests above the long-context threshold.
- Operations: Identify who owns credentials, quotas, logs, incident response, invoices and support escalation.
- Acceptance criteria: Set measurable quality, latency, availability and cost limits before testing so a result cannot be reinterpreted after the fact.
Step 2: verify the current GPT-6 catalog and model identity
AWS’s OpenAI catalog currently lists GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, with a model card for each entry. Start at the AWS OpenAI model catalog, then open the card for the exact variant you intend to use. Do not copy an identifier from an old integration guide.

The Astra card documents the Bedrock model ID openai.gpt-6-astra. It also documents Bedrock Runtime inference IDs us.openai.gpt-6-astra and global.openai.gpt-6-astra. Which identifier is valid depends on the endpoint and geographic inference option described on the card; selecting the text that merely looks familiar can route a request incorrectly or fail validation. See the GPT-6 Astra model card for the current mapping.
GPT-6 Luna facts are model-specific
The Luna card lists a launch date of September 22, 2026, an active lifecycle, a 1,050,000-token context window and a maximum output of 128,000 tokens. Those figures apply to Luna as documented and must not be generalized to Astra, Sol or every GPT-6 endpoint. The GPT-6 Luna model card is the authority for its current limits.

Match the direct-API model separately
OpenAI’s direct catalog and pricing page may present the same family with different service-tier labels or availability conditions. Confirm that the direct model is the same variant you selected on Bedrock, rather than assuming that a similar display name means identical limits or billing.
Step 3: check endpoint and API compatibility
Use the Bedrock API compatibility guide as a filter, then confirm the model card. The compatibility table is not a blanket promise that every Bedrock API works with every model or endpoint. For each required operation, record:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- the supported endpoint and request format;
- whether tools, streaming and structured responses are available;
- the SDK or HTTP behavior your application relies on;
- limits on input, output and simultaneous requests; and
- how errors, retries and usage reporting are surfaced.
Repeat the same exercise against the current OpenAI API documentation for the direct route. Keep your application abstraction narrow enough that endpoint-specific differences are isolated in one adapter; otherwise a later route change can affect business logic, logging and tests throughout the codebase.
Step 4: resolve region and routing before deployment
Geography is a first-order design constraint. AWS publishes availability by endpoint and region in its model endpoint availability guide. A model can be listed in the catalog yet unavailable in the region your account is permitted to use, or available only through a cross-region option.
The Astra card distinguishes Bedrock Runtime and Bedrock Mantle paths and describes inference choices that carry geographic qualifications. Check the card for the exact region, endpoint, routing mode and any cross-region inference behavior. Then verify the direct OpenAI route’s current processing and residency availability for your account and selected model. Document the resulting processing locations in your architecture record; do not promise a residency property that the selected route does not explicitly provide.

Step 5: compare the operational model
When Bedrock may fit better
Bedrock can be a practical fit when your team already administers AWS identities, network boundaries, logging, quotas and consolidated billing. That is an operational alignment, not proof that every control behaves identically to a native AWS service. Confirm the exact permissions, log destinations, retention settings, support path and regional behavior for your account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the direct API may fit better
The direct OpenAI API can reduce integration layers for a team already standardized on OpenAI credentials, SDKs, usage reporting and support processes. Validate the same concerns: secret storage, key rotation, organization and project ownership, quota increases, audit logging, incident response and data-handling requirements.
Questions both teams must answer
- Where are credentials stored and rotated?
- Which team receives an outage or quota alert outside business hours?
- Can finance attribute usage to an application, environment and cost center?
- What request and response data is logged, for how long, and who can read it?
- How will you fail over if a region, endpoint or account quota is unavailable?
Step 6: compare matched prices, not headline rates
OpenAI’s pricing page states: "OpenAI models in Amazon Bedrock are billed through AWS. Bedrock pricing in commercial regions matches OpenAI direct pricing for equivalent services." This means Bedrock should not be assumed cheaper merely because it is accessed through AWS. Your actual bill still depends on the model, processing tier, context band, cache behavior, inference option and request mix. Check the live OpenAI API pricing and the applicable AWS model card immediately before committing.
GPT-6 Astra Standard commercial-region rates on Bedrock
The Astra card lists the following amounts per 1 million tokens for its Standard offering. Short-context rates apply up to 272,000 input tokens; long-context rates apply when input exceeds 272,000 tokens. In-Region and Geo CRIS are grouped together on the card, while Global CRIS is listed separately.
| Context band | Inference option | Input | Cache write | Cache read | Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short | In-Region or Geo CRIS | $11.00 | $13.75 | $1.10 | $55.00 |
| Short | Global CRIS | $10.00 | $12.50 | $1.00 | $50.00 |
| Long (input over 272,000) | In-Region or Geo CRIS | $22.00 | $27.50 | $2.20 | $82.50 |
| Long (input over 272,000) | Global CRIS | $20.00 | $25.00 | $2.00 | $75.00 |
These are current AWS model-card figures for commercial regions, stated per million tokens; they are not a forecast for your workload and can change. Apply the long-context row to the request when its input exceeds the stated threshold, and keep cache-write, cache-read and uncached input volumes separate in your estimate.

GPT-6 Luna Standard global cross-region rates on Bedrock
The Luna card lists these Standard global cross-region amounts per 1 million tokens. It uses the same 272,000-token boundary for short versus long context.
| Context band | Input | Cache write | Cache read | Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short | $0.10 | $0.125 | $0.01 | $0.50 |
| Long (input over 272,000) | $0.20 | $0.25 | $0.02 | $0.75 |
Those figures are Luna-specific global cross-region rates, not a general GPT-6 price and not a substitute for checking another inference option or region.
How to build a comparable estimate
- Choose the same model variant and service tier on both routes.
- Split monthly input into uncached, cache-write and cache-read tokens.
- Split input into short-context and long-context requests using the applicable threshold.
- Measure output tokens separately; output rates can dominate even when prompts are heavily cached.
- Apply the selected Bedrock inference option or the corresponding direct-API processing tier.
- Add fixed platform costs, observability, network transfer and engineering operations only if they are actually incurred by your design.
- Recalculate with peak traffic and a sensitivity case for cache-hit rate, output length and long-context share.
Do not transpose an AWS inference-option rate onto a different direct service tier. OpenAI’s pricing table currently lists GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna by processing tier and context length; retrieve the exact direct-API rate for the tier you will operate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 7: test quality, latency and cost on your workload
No comparative performance statistic or named benchmark establishes a universal winner between Bedrock and the direct API. Run a controlled evaluation if performance affects the decision.
Build a representative test set
- Use anonymized production-shaped prompts, including short and long contexts.
- Include tool calls, structured outputs, streaming and failure cases if the application uses them.
- Preserve the same system instructions, model variant, temperature or equivalent controls and maximum output settings.
- Test realistic concurrency and burst patterns, not only one request at a time.
Measure the same outcomes on both routes
- Quality: score factual accuracy, instruction following, tool correctness and schema validity with a blinded rubric.
- Latency: record time to first token, completion time and tail percentiles at the target concurrency.
- Reliability: count timeouts, throttling, server errors, malformed responses and retry amplification.
- Economics: record uncached input, cache writes, cache reads, output tokens and any long-context surcharge.
Keep the test results tied to the exact date, model ID, region, endpoint, tier and SDK version. A result for one routing mode does not establish behavior for another.

Decision examples
An AWS-standardized internal application
If the application already uses AWS identity, regional controls and centralized billing, start by checking whether the required GPT-6 card supports the needed endpoint in an approved region. If it does, Bedrock may reduce operational duplication. Confirm API features and run the workload test before declaring the route suitable.
A product team already built around OpenAI APIs
If the team depends on a direct OpenAI endpoint and its SDK behavior, begin with the direct route. Consider Bedrock only if a concrete regional, governance or procurement requirement justifies adapting the integration, and verify that the selected Bedrock endpoint supports every required operation.
A data-location-constrained deployment
Neither provider name answers the residency question. Compare the documented processing location and routing mode for the exact model and account. Exclude any option that cannot satisfy policy, even if its token price is lower.
A cost-sensitive, cache-heavy workload
Model the cache-write and cache-read mix explicitly. A low uncached-input rate does not guarantee a low bill if output volume, long-context requests or cache writes are substantial. Use the same cache assumptions and context distribution for both routes.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using an old model ID: Reopen the live catalog and model card before deployment.
- Assuming catalog listing means regional access: Check endpoint availability for the target account and region.
- Treating compatibility tables as universal: Verify the selected model card and endpoint for every API feature.
- Comparing unlike prices: Match model, tier, context band, cache category, output volume and inference route.
- Calling a global route “local”: Record whether the option is in-region, geographic cross-region or global cross-region.
- Declaring a performance winner without a benchmark: Test representative prompts, concurrency and tools on both routes.
- Ignoring output tokens: Include completion length in the estimate; output rates differ materially from input rates.
- Hard-coding provider details throughout the application: Isolate model IDs, endpoint selection and request translation in configuration and an adapter layer.
Deployment checklist
- Freeze the model variant and required context/output limits.
- Open the current AWS card and direct OpenAI documentation for that variant.
- Confirm endpoint, API features, model ID and region for the intended route.
- Document processing location, routing mode, identity, logging, quota and support ownership.
- Collect current prices with the date, tier, context threshold and cache assumptions attached.
- Run the same quality, latency, reliability and cost test on both routes when both remain viable.
- Select the route that satisfies mandatory constraints and has acceptable measured economics; record the assumptions so the decision can be revisited when catalog or pricing changes.
Bottom line
Choose GPT-6 on Bedrock when its documented model, endpoint, region and AWS operating model solve a requirement you actually have. Choose the direct OpenAI API when its endpoint and feature set provide the cleaner path for your team. Use current model cards and pricing pages, then validate the decision with a matched workload test; the available official material does not support a universal claim that either route is faster, higher quality or cheaper.
