There is no universal winner. Choose the engine that can ship your specific game on its required platforms, within your team’s skills and budget. Start with the non-negotiable export target, price the applicable license, then build a small slice of your riskiest mechanic and export it before committing. Godot is the lowest-commitment option for many desktop, mobile, and web projects; GameMaker can be a straightforward commercial choice for a mainly 2D release; Unity may fit teams that need its Pro console pathway or already work in its ecosystem. Those are starting hypotheses, not performance rankings.

The short answer: decide from constraints, not engine popularity

For a small indie team, an engine decision affects every scene, script, asset pipeline, build, and platform submission. Changing later can mean rewriting gameplay code, converting content, replacing plugins, and repeating certification work. Treat the choice as a production-risk decision rather than a contest.

If this is your situation First engine to investigate Why, and what to verify
You want an open-source engine with no engine royalty or seat fee and are targeting desktop, mobile, or web. Godot Godot is MIT-licensed and its 4.4 documentation lists Windows, macOS, Linux/BSD, Android, iOS, and web exports. Confirm the exact features and version you will ship.
Your project is a small 2D game and you need commercial desktop, web, or mobile publishing without a recurring engine subscription. GameMaker Its current help pages describe free non-commercial use and a one-time Professional license for commercial publishing on listed non-console targets. Test the workflow and confirm regional terms.
Console release is essential, or your team already has substantial Unity production experience. Unity Unity’s 2026 pricing page identifies console publishing as a Pro feature. Price seats and obtain the platform-holder access and porting plan before building around that assumption.
You are undecided about the platform or the hardest mechanic. None yet Prototype the mechanic in the leading candidates and export to the intended target. Use measured setup time, build reliability, and missing integrations from your own project.

The table is a triage tool, not a claim that one engine is faster, better performing, or easier for everyone. No cross-engine productivity or performance measurement is established here.

1. Lock down the release platforms first

Write the release plan before opening an editor: target operating systems, storefronts, mobile stores, browser, and any console. An engine that cannot reach a required platform through a realistic licensing and SDK path is not a fit, regardless of its other strengths.

Desktop, mobile, and web

Godot’s version 4.4 FAQ lists Windows, macOS, Linux/BSD, Android, iOS, and web as export targets. It also says the core team cannot provide an open-source console export because console manufacturers’ licensing terms restrict distribution. Read the FAQ for the exact engine version you intend to use: Godot 4.4 export and language FAQ.

GameMaker’s current upgrade information lists GX Games, Windows, macOS, Ubuntu, HTML5, Android, iOS, and tvOS under Professional. Unity’s cited pricing page lists console publishing as a Pro feature; it does not establish a complete, platform-by-platform export matrix in the material available here. Treat every target as a separate proof point and check the current documentation, SDK requirements, and store rules.

Consoles

Console plans add more than an export button. You may need an approved developer account, a development kit, a platform-specific SDK, a publisher or porting partner, age-rating and certification work, and a budget for repeated test submissions. Godot’s open-source core does not supply a console export under the cited 4.4 FAQ, so a console-first project needs a separate feasibility and cost analysis. GameMaker places Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch exports under Enterprise, while Unity identifies console publishing as a Pro feature. Those statements describe engine-plan access, not guaranteed approval or a finished port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser and mobile caveats

If web delivery is central, language choice can affect the engine decision. Godot’s 4.4 FAQ says C# support is relatively new and unavailable for web in that documentation version. A team intending to share code between native and web builds should test its actual language, plugins, input, audio, and save-system requirements in a browser export rather than infer compatibility from a desktop prototype.

2. Price the license you will actually need

Separate the engine price from the whole publishing budget. Platform-holder fees, SDK access, development hardware, porting, testing, localization, ratings, payment processing, and store commissions can exceed the engine charge. Put each item in a spreadsheet and mark whether it is one-time, recurring, or conditional on revenue and funding.

Understand Unity’s canceled Runtime Fee

Unity states that it canceled the Runtime Fee on September 12, 2024, effective immediately, and that the fee will not apply to games made with Unity 6 or any other Unity version. Do not budget a per-install Unity charge based on older articles. Plan against the current subscription terms instead: Unity pricing and Runtime Fee FAQ.

Check eligibility before revenue arrives

Record the date and currency of every price in your budget. A free tier can become ineligible when funding or revenue crosses a threshold; a one-time license can still leave you paying for platform services; and a console plan can be recurring even when desktop publishing is not. Recheck the official pages immediately before signing a contract or publishing.

3. Match the engine to the game you can sustain

Describe the game in production terms rather than genre labels. List the number of dimensions, camera and rendering requirements, physics interactions, editor tools, animation complexity, networking, accessibility, localization, save data, and asset formats you will actually need. The cited sources do not provide a rigorous, current feature matrix for those categories, so use them as prototype questions, not settled rankings.

When Godot is a sensible starting point

Godot’s MIT license removes an engine-seat charge and permits commercial use, subject to the notice requirement when redistributing the engine binary. That makes it attractive when you want source availability, control over the toolchain, or a low fixed budget. Its cited 4.4 documentation covers desktop, mobile, and web exports. It does not provide an open-source console export, so console delivery requires a different plan or an independently verified solution.

When GameMaker is a sensible starting point

GameMaker’s published terms fit a project that can stay within its Professional target list: Windows, macOS, Ubuntu, HTML5, Android, iOS, tvOS, and GX Games. Non-commercial use is free; commercial use requires Professional, and console exports require Enterprise according to the August 4, 2026 help pages. Whether its editor, scripting model, animation workflow, and extension ecosystem fit your game is something your risk slice must establish; the available sources do not support a universal “easiest” or “best 2D” claim.

When Unity is a sensible starting point

Unity may be practical when a console release is non-negotiable and the Pro plan, platform access, and team budget are acceptable, or when your team already has maintainable Unity projects and tools. The Personal threshold and Pro prices above are the published 2026 terms. Do not choose it on the assumption that a Runtime Fee still exists, and do not infer a performance advantage from its market presence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Let existing skills reduce production risk

List what the people who will ship the game already know: a programming language, source control, build automation, art and audio import, debugging, profiling, and the engine’s scene or object workflow. Familiarity is a risk reducer, but it is not proof of faster learning. A short tutorial success is less valuable than the ability to diagnose a broken build six months into production.

Godot language choices

The Godot 4.4 FAQ identifies GDScript, C#, and C++ as officially supported. It recommends GDScript to newcomers to Godot or game development and notes that C# support is relatively new and unavailable for web in that version’s documentation. If your team is strongest in C#, test the exact Godot version, target platforms, editor integration, and third-party libraries before committing. If web is required, include a native-language prototype in the acceptance test.

Unity and GameMaker language questions

The supplied official sources establish Unity’s plans and GameMaker’s licensing and targets, but not a complete language comparison for either engine. Do not select on an assumed language ranking. Instead, ask each candidate to implement one representative mechanic, persistence, input remapping, and a release build using the languages your team would maintain.

5. Run a risk-first prototype before committing

Build a vertical slice that is deliberately small but technically representative. The goal is not to make a fun demo; it is to expose the decision that could force an engine change.

  1. Write acceptance criteria. Name the hardest mechanic, the minimum frame or latency behavior you require, the input devices, save/load behavior, and the first shipping platform.
  2. Choose two or three candidates. Include the engine that best fits your constraints and at least one credible alternative. Do not spend weeks polishing art.
  3. Implement the risky path first. Include the unusual physics interaction, procedural generation, large number of entities, dialogue localization, online service, or other feature most likely to expose missing tooling.
  4. Use production-shaped assets. Import representative sprites or models, audio formats, shaders, fonts, controller mappings, and save data. Placeholder-only tests hide pipeline failures.
  5. Export early. Produce a development build for every intended target, including a browser or mobile build if applicable. For consoles, verify the developer-account and SDK path before assuming an export is available.
  6. Record observations. Measure your setup time, iteration loop, build failures, debugging friction, missing integrations, and the work required to reproduce a clean build. These are your project’s evidence, not a universal benchmark.
  7. Make a go/no-go decision. Reject an engine when it fails a non-negotiable requirement or creates an unbudgeted dependency. Otherwise choose the candidate with the lowest total production risk, not the most impressive first hour.

What a useful prototype report contains

  • Engine and exact version, operating system, and plug-ins used.
  • Time from a blank project to the first playable interaction and to each target export.
  • Open bugs, workarounds, undocumented steps, and dependencies that need ongoing maintenance.
  • Binary size, startup behavior, input and save tests, and platform-specific failures observed by your team.
  • A migration note describing which scripts, assets, and data would be difficult to move if the engine were replaced.

6. Compare the total cost of shipping

Make a scenario budget instead of comparing sticker prices. For each engine, enter the number of seats, expected revenue and funding, target platforms, subscription duration, platform kits, external services, and contingency for porting and certification.

Cost question Godot Unity GameMaker
Engine license structure MIT-licensed, no engine fee stated; redistribution notice required. Personal eligibility depends on the USD $200,000 revenue-and-funding threshold; Pro is priced per seat. 7. Avoid the switching traps that make a “cheap” choice expensive

Content and import formats

Engines organize scenes, prefabs or objects, materials, animations, audio, and metadata differently. Before production, identify which source files remain portable and which are engine-generated. Keep authoritative art, dialogue, localization, and data in version-controlled source formats where practical, and document any conversion step.

Scripts and plugins

Gameplay code, editor scripts, platform services, analytics, and networking libraries are often the least portable part of a project. List every external dependency in the prototype report, including its license, update cadence, target support, and replacement plan. A plug-in that works on desktop but not web, mobile, or console can become a release blocker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build and team workflow

Test clean checkouts, automated builds, branching, code review, and crash-log collection before the project grows. The engine that feels quickest for one person may impose more friction on art, design, QA, or build engineering. Include the non-programmers who will use the editor in the trial.

8. Practical choices for common small-team scenarios

Solo developer, desktop-first 2D game

Start by comparing Godot and GameMaker. Godot offers MIT licensing and the cited desktop exports without an engine fee; GameMaker offers a one-time Professional commercial license for its listed desktop and web targets. Choose after implementing your game’s hardest interaction, save system, input scheme, and a release build. The sources do not establish which editor is universally easier.

Small team planning desktop, mobile, and web

Godot’s cited 4.4 FAQ explicitly lists those broad target categories, but test your language and plug-ins because the same FAQ limits C# on web in that version. GameMaker’s Professional list includes desktop, HTML5, Android, and iOS, so compare the exact features your game uses on each. Unity remains an option when existing team knowledge or a required service outweighs the Personal/Pro cost; verify every export in the prototype.

Studio with a firm console requirement

Begin with platform-holder access, developer kits, SDK availability, porting capacity, and plan eligibility—not with a gameplay tutorial. Unity’s cited pricing page lists console publishing as Pro; GameMaker lists consoles under Enterprise; Godot’s 4.4 FAQ says its core team cannot provide an open-source console export. Obtain written confirmation of the path and budget before building engine-specific systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Team with uncertain funding or commercial status

Model both a low-revenue prototype period and a successful launch. Godot’s license does not impose an engine fee, GameMaker is free for non-commercial use until you monetize, and Unity Personal is tied to the USD $200,000 revenue-and-funding threshold. Put the trigger date and migration consequences in the project plan.

9. A final decision checklist

  • Is every required export target available through a documented, affordable path for the exact engine version?
  • Have you identified the plan you need at launch and after crossing any revenue or funding threshold?
  • Does the license allow your intended commercial distribution, and have you recorded any notice obligation?
  • Can the team maintain the chosen language, editor workflow, plug-ins, and build system?
  • Did a representative slice exercise the riskiest mechanic, real assets, save data, input, and target export?
  • Did you document failures and workarounds instead of relying on a tutorial impression?
  • What would have to be rewritten if you switched engines after six months?

If any answer is “no,” keep the decision open and run the missing test. Once the non-negotiable platform, budget, and prototype results agree, commit to the engine your team can carry through production and release.
