The best smart-lock entry method is the one your household can use reliably and the one that still leaves a workable fallback when a phone, battery, network connection, or electronic feature is unavailable. Fingerprint readers favor quick, hands-free entry; keypads make code-based sharing simple; apps add phone control and access management; a physical key provides a mechanical route only on models with a keyed cylinder.
These methods solve different access problems. None, by itself, proves that a lock is more secure than the others. Choose by examining who needs entry, how guests will be added and removed, whether you need control from outside the home, and which backup you can use during a failure.
Start with the access problem you need to solve
Before comparing features, list the people and situations the lock must support. A household with a predictable routine may value the fastest credential at the door. A rental host may care more about issuing and revoking temporary access. Someone who frequently arrives with full hands may prefer a fingerprint reader or a code over a phone. A household that wants a non-electronic fallback must confirm that the exact lock variant has a keyway.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use these questions to narrow the choice:
- Who enters regularly, and can each person reliably carry a phone, remember a code, or enroll a finger?
- Will visitors need independent access without creating an account?
- Do you need to unlock the door while away from home, or is local operation enough?
- What should happen if the phone is lost, the Wi-Fi connection fails, or the lock battery is exhausted?
- Does the specific configuration fit your door and include the hardware you expect?
If you cannot answer the fallback question, do not buy based on the headline feature alone. Product-family pages often combine keyed and key-free versions, different keypad designs, and different connectivity options.

How each access method works
Fingerprint access
A fingerprint lock authenticates an enrolled finger at a reader on the exterior unit. It is convenient for residents who do not want to remove a phone or recall a PIN. It can also reduce the temptation to leave a code visible near the door.
Enrollment is a real setup step, not an automatic capability. In Yale’s Assure Lock 2 Touch example, fingerprints are added through the Yale Access App. Check how many fingers and users the exact model supports, whether enrollment requires the app, and how an administrator deletes a former resident’s credential.
Biometrics are not a complete fallback plan. A dirty or wet finger, a reader problem, or a depleted lock battery can prevent recognition. Verify whether the variant also offers a keypad, a keyway, an external emergency-power contact, or another documented recovery route. Do not treat a manufacturer’s promotional recognition or speed figures as independently tested performance; the available material does not establish a comparative error rate for fingerprint locks.
Keypad access
A keypad accepts a PIN entered at the door. It is often the simplest way to let a household member or visitor enter without a physical key or a personal app account. Administrators can usually create separate codes and remove them when access ends, but the exact process and code capacity are model-specific.
Inspect the physical interface before ordering. Tactile buttons can be easier to operate by touch, while a touchscreen may have a cleaner appearance but require the display to wake and respond. Ask whether the keypad is included in the configuration you are buying; a product family can contain both keypad and non-keypad versions.
Plan code ownership carefully. Do not give every visitor the permanent household PIN. Use individual or time-limited codes when the lock supports them, remove codes that are no longer needed, and avoid obvious numbers such as an address or birthday. A code remains usable by anyone who learns it, so changing a shared code after a contractor or former guest leaves is part of normal administration.
App access
An app can provide phone-based unlocking, user management, activity views, invitations, and settings. Those capabilities are separate from remote operation. A phone may communicate with the lock over Bluetooth while you are nearby, yet be unable to operate it from another location.

For the Assure Lock 2 family, Yale describes Bluetooth operation and says remote access requires a Wi-Fi module upgrade or a Wi-Fi-enabled model. Treat this as a distinction to verify for any brand: local Bluetooth, remote Wi-Fi, a separate hub, an optional module, a subscription, and smart-home platform support are different requirements.
Read the feature list for the exact model and region. Confirm whether the app can create and revoke guest access, display activity, send notifications, or merely perform local unlocking. Also check what happens during an internet outage. A local Bluetooth connection may continue to work even when remote control is unavailable, but that behavior must be documented for the chosen lock rather than assumed.
Physical key access
A physical key is a manual entry method provided by a keyed cylinder. It operates independently of the phone app and home network, making it a useful fallback for households that want a mechanical route. A key-free configuration does not provide that option.
Manufacturers may sell keyed and key-free versions under one product-family name. Yale does so for the Assure Lock 2 line. Confirm the precise SKU, cylinder arrangement, and door-side hardware before checkout. A keyway can also affect how you manage spare keys, but the available evidence does not show that keyed models are universally safer or that every household needs one.
Comparison at a glance
| Decision axis | Fingerprint | Keypad | App | Physical key |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Credential at the door | Enrolled finger | Memorized or shared PIN | Phone with supported app | Cut mechanical key |
| Best fit | Hands-free entry for enrolled users | Households and guests needing independent codes | Phone control, sharing, and activity management | A non-app entry route |
| Questions to verify | Reader present in this exact model; enrollment and fallback | Keypad included; button style; code limits and removal | Bluetooth versus Wi-Fi; hub, module, subscription, and platform requirements | Keyed variant; cylinder and door compatibility |
| Typical dependency | Working sensor and enrolled biometric | Working keypad and valid code | Charged phone, account, app, and supported connection | Key and functioning cylinder |
This table describes access roles, not a security ranking. No controlled comparison establishes that one of these four methods has a universally lower failure rate or is categorically safer.
Choose by household scenario
You want the fastest daily entry
Fingerprint access is attractive when the same residents enter frequently and prefer not to carry anything. Enroll more than one finger per authorized person if the model permits it, and keep a second method available for situations in which the reader cannot authenticate.
You regularly host visitors or service workers
A keypad is usually easier to explain than an app account. Create a distinct code for each person or job, set an expiration when supported, and delete it when the visit ends. If the lock only supports permanent codes, maintain a written access list and change shared credentials promptly.

You manage a property from another location
An app is useful only if the lock has the connectivity needed for remote features. Confirm Wi-Fi or hub requirements and test an invitation and revocation before relying on the system. If the lock is Bluetooth-only, you may need to be physically near the door to make changes or unlock it.
You want a non-electronic fallback
Select a keyed configuration and store spare keys in a controlled location. Verify that the cylinder is included, that your door accepts the lock, and that the key remains usable if the electronic portion is unpowered. A key-free model cannot provide this fallback.
Children, older adults, or people who struggle with phones
A simple PIN can be easier to teach than an app workflow, while a fingerprint can reduce memory demands for an enrolled user. Consider tactile feedback, lighting, reach, and what happens when a finger is wet or a code is forgotten. Keep an administrator method separate from ordinary daily credentials.
Local control, remote control, and outages
The word app does not tell you where the command is processed. A local Bluetooth command normally requires the phone to be within the lock’s radio range. Remote operation requires a path from the internet to the lock, commonly through built-in Wi-Fi, an optional Wi-Fi module, or a hub.
Before buying, write down the exact connection chain:
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify whether the lock itself includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or both.
- Check whether a separate module or hub is required for commands while you are away.
- Confirm whether that hardware is included in the package or sold separately.
- Check for an account, subscription, or smart-home platform requirement for each desired feature.
- Ask what remains available when the internet is down: keypad, fingerprint, local Bluetooth, keyway, or none.
For the Yale Assure Lock 2 example, Bluetooth is listed for the family and remote access requires Wi-Fi capability or an upgrade. That illustrates why a product page’s app label is insufficient evidence of remote control.
Fallback planning for battery and electronics
Electronic entry creates failure modes that a mechanical lock does not: depleted batteries, a failed reader, a forgotten PIN, a lost phone, an account lockout, or a network outage. Your plan should state which credential is used in each case.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Phone unavailable: use a keypad, fingerprint, or key if the variant provides one.
- Wi-Fi unavailable: use a local method; remote app commands may not work.
- Lock battery depleted: follow the model’s documented emergency-power procedure or use its keyway. Do not assume every model accepts the same external battery method.
- Fingerprint rejected: try another enrolled finger or the keypad/key fallback.
- Code forgotten or compromised: use an administrator credential or key, then replace the affected code.
- Phone lost: revoke the device or app session through the account and rely on another credential until access is restored.
Because emergency behavior varies by model, read the installation and support documentation before installation and test the fallback while the door is open.
Compatibility checklist before ordering
- Measure and identify the door. Confirm thickness, bore dimensions, backset, edge shape, handing, and the condition of the existing deadbolt or mortise. Use the manufacturer’s compatibility guide rather than assuming a standard fit.
- Select the exact variant. Record whether it is keyed or key-free, includes a keypad, has a fingerprint reader, and contains the connectivity hardware you need.
- Check the exterior interface. Decide between tactile buttons and a touchscreen, and verify weather exposure, visibility, and lighting for your installation location.
- Verify ecosystem support. Confirm that the chosen version works with your intended phone operating system and smart-home platform, and identify any account or hub dependency.
- Map guest access. Make sure the administrator can add, schedule, suspend, and remove users in the way your household requires.
- Read the fallback instructions. Locate the keyway or emergency-power contact, if present, and confirm the required procedure before the lock is fitted.
- Check regional availability. Features, bundled hardware, firmware, and compatibility can vary by market; recheck the listing for your region at purchase time.
Set up access safely
Installation is only the beginning. Treat the lock as an internet-connected device when it has an app, Wi-Fi, or hub.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Install the lock according to the exact model instructions and test the deadbolt with the door open before closing it.
- Create the owner account with a unique, strong password and enable available multifactor authentication.
- Change default PINs, administrator codes, or other factory credentials where the product permits it.
- Enroll fingerprints in a private setting and record which users have active credentials.
- Create individual guest codes or app invitations instead of distributing the owner’s account.
- Test locking, unlocking, code removal, app operation, and every documented fallback while you can still enter safely.
- Install firmware and app updates promptly, and review permissions granted to the app.
- Secure the home router with a strong administrator password, current firmware, and a protected Wi-Fi configuration.
- Disable remote management or integrations that you do not use, reducing the number of active pathways into the device.
- Review activity logs and remove former residents, contractors, phones, codes, and integrations when access ends.
These practices reflect general connected-device guidance from the Federal Trade Commission and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. They improve the setup around a smart lock but do not certify a particular lock or prove its resistance to every attack.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to manage guests without handing out a key
Start with the least privilege the lock supports. A one-time visitor may need a temporary code; a family member may need a persistent code; a property manager may need app administration. Give each person only the access period and capability required.
For keypad users
Create a separate PIN, communicate it through a private channel, and set an expiration if available. Remove the PIN immediately after the visit or service call. If the lock cannot schedule expiration, maintain a calendar reminder and rotate any code shared by multiple people.
For app users
Send an invitation tied to the guest’s own account when supported. Define whether the guest can unlock only, view activity, or administer other users. Revoke the invitation when the relationship ends and check that the device no longer appears as authorized.

For fingerprint users
Enroll only people who need recurring access and delete their biometric profile when they no longer require entry. Because a fingerprint cannot be changed like a PIN, limit enrollment to trusted users and retain another method for everyone who may need emergency access.

Common buying mistakes and their fixes
Assuming every smart lock has every method
Fix: compare the exact configuration, not the family name. Confirm the reader, keypad, keyway, and included modules in the item specification.
Equating app support with remote unlocking
Fix: identify whether the app uses local Bluetooth or an internet connection through Wi-Fi or a hub. Verify the hardware and any service requirement for remote commands.
Ignoring the door
Fix: measure the door and check compatibility before selecting access features. A lock that cannot be mounted or aligned correctly is not a practical security upgrade.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Relying on one credential
Fix: decide in advance how entry works during a dead battery, lost phone, rejected fingerprint, forgotten code, or outage. Test that route with the door open.
Leaving old access active
Fix: keep an access register, assign individual credentials, and remove codes, fingerprints, app invitations, and devices as soon as they are no longer needed.
What the available evidence can and cannot establish
The cited manufacturer material supports the existence of fingerprint, keypad, app, and keyed or key-free configurations in the Assure Lock 2 family, along with Bluetooth operation and a Wi-Fi requirement for remote access. It does not establish that every regional variant has the same feature set, that all doors are compatible, or that a particular access method will work during every power or network failure.
No independently verified statistic directly compares fingerprint, keypad, app, and physical-key smart-lock access. There is also no controlled usability test, biometric error-rate comparison, or universal battery-failure behavior covering these four methods. Treat promotional performance numbers as manufacturer claims, not as cross-brand laboratory results.

A practical decision rule
Choose fingerprint when recurring users want hands-free entry and you have verified enrollment and a fallback. Choose a keypad when independent guest codes and phone-free access are central. Choose app capability when you need user administration or phone control, then confirm whether the desired actions are local or remote. Choose a keyed version when a mechanical route is important to your risk plan.
Many households will combine methods rather than select only one: for example, fingerprint or keypad for daily use, an app for administration, and a keyway or documented emergency procedure for failures. The right combination is the one that matches your users, your door, your connectivity, and your ability to maintain credentials over time.
