Use exact diagonalization (ED) when the finite chain is the object you need to solve exactly—for example, to obtain its full spectrum, study finite-size effects, or validate a new Hamiltonian on small systems. Use matrix-product-state (MPS) tensor-network methods, especially density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG), for ground states of longer one-dimensional chains and bulk-limit questions when the state remains representable at a manageable bond dimension. For real-time dynamics, use a tensor-network evolution method such as time-evolving block decimation (TEBD), while controlling both time-step and truncation errors.

There is no universal chain length at which one method becomes preferable. The crossover depends on local spin dimension, symmetries, boundary conditions, target eigenstates, interaction range, observables, implementation and hardware. The reliable choice is therefore driven by the scientific question and demonstrated convergence—not by a single number of sites.

ED or tensor networks at a glance

Scientific goal Usually the better starting point What must be demonstrated
Full spectrum of a small finite chain Exact diagonalization The selected Hilbert-space sector and eigensolver fit available memory and compute.
Selected low-lying eigenstates of a finite chain ED with a sparse iterative solver, if the sector fits; otherwise DMRG or another targeted method Residuals, state orthogonality and convergence of the requested eigenpairs.
Ground state of a long one-dimensional chain Finite-system DMRG Energy and every reported observable converge as bond dimension and truncation settings are tightened.
Translationally invariant bulk ground state Infinite DMRG (iDMRG) The unit cell permits the true periodicity and results are stable when the cell is enlarged.
Real-time evolution TEBD or another MPS time-evolution algorithm Convergence with respect to Trotter time step, bond dimension and truncation error.
Critical or highly entangled state Either method, chosen cautiously; ED may be limited by size while MPS may require very large bond dimension Long-distance correlations and other sensitive observables, not energy alone.

For a spin-half chain with L sites and no reductions, the Hilbert-space dimension is 2^L, a mathematical scaling stated in the ITensor DMRG documentation. Symmetry sectors can reduce the working space, and sparse solvers avoid constructing every eigenvector when only a few are needed, but the underlying exponential growth remains.

What exact diagonalization actually computes

A finite Hamiltonian solved directly

ED constructs the Hamiltonian matrix for the finite chain, selects a symmetry sector when available, and computes eigenvalues and eigenvectors to numerical precision. If you diagonalize the complete matrix, you obtain the finite system’s full spectrum, eigenstates, degeneracies and matrix elements. That direct access is valuable for spectroscopy, level statistics, thermal sums, excited-state properties and debugging a new model.

“Exact” means exact for the specified finite Hamiltonian, boundary conditions, parameters and symmetry sector up to floating-point and solver tolerances. It does not mean that a finite-size energy or correlation length is automatically the thermodynamic-limit result.

Full versus selected spectra

A dense diagonalization treats all matrix elements and all eigenvectors, so memory often becomes the first constraint. If you need only a few extremal eigenpairs, a sparse iterative eigensolver can work with matrix-vector products instead of storing a dense matrix. This changes the practical limit, but not the exponential Hilbert-space scaling. The relevant limits depend on local spin dimension, conserved quantum numbers, matrix sparsity, target eigenvalues, solver behavior and machine memory; no single maximum chain length is defensible without those details.

Where ED is strongest

  • Small-system benchmarks: compare energies, correlations, symmetries and quantum numbers against an independently implemented MPS calculation.
  • Excited states: obtain several eigenstates directly, subject to the sector and solver capacity.
  • Finite-size physics: resolve gaps, level crossings, boundary effects and exact degeneracies of the chosen chain.
  • Implementation checks: catch sign errors, missing bonds, incorrect boundary terms and wrong conserved-quantity sectors before scaling up.

What tensor-network methods compute

MPS and the DMRG optimization

An MPS stores a many-body wavefunction as a chain of tensors connected by auxiliary indices. The largest auxiliary-index size is the bond dimension. DMRG optimizes one site or a small block at a time, solves a reduced effective eigenproblem, and uses a singular-value decomposition (SVD) to truncate the bond space. As ITensor explains, this replaces one exponentially large eigenproblem with a sequence of reduced local problems while retaining the states judged most relevant.

The reduction is an approximation controlled by the retained bond dimension, truncation cutoff and optimization convergence. A low energy is necessary but not sufficient: a bond dimension that gives a stable energy can still give inaccurate long-distance correlations, entanglement entropy or response functions.

Finite-system DMRG

Finite DMRG sweeps back and forth through a chain, updating local tensors while the rest of the MPS supplies left and right environments. It is particularly effective for one-dimensional ground states with open boundaries and modest entanglement. You should increase the maximum bond dimension in stages and monitor the actual observables you intend to publish.

Infinite DMRG and unit-cell choices

iDMRG represents a repeated unit cell and targets a translationally invariant bulk state. The cell must be large enough to accommodate the ground state’s physical periodicity. A cell that is too small can force an artificial periodic pattern and exclude the state you are looking for. When periodicity is uncertain, repeat the calculation with larger or different cells and report the sensitivity; TeNPy’s iDMRG protocol emphasizes this check.

TEBD for real-time dynamics

TEBD approximates the time-evolution operator with a Trotter–Suzuki product. For nearest-neighbor chains, separating even and odd bonds produces local two-site gates, which are applied sequentially to the MPS. The approximation has two independent numerical controls: the Trotter time step and the truncation performed after gates enlarge the bond dimension. The TensorNetwork.org TEBD description details this gate-splitting approach. Longer interaction ranges, long evolution times and rapidly growing entanglement can make the required bond dimension increase sharply.

Choose by the question you need to answer

“I need the complete spectrum of a finite chain.”

Start with ED if the symmetry sector and matrix representation fit your resources. Tensor networks are not a drop-in replacement for a complete finite-size spectrum: standard ground-state DMRG targets a few low-energy states, while obtaining many excited states requires additional targeting strategies and convergence checks. Use ED to retain exact finite-size level information whenever the calculation is feasible.

“I need a ground state for a long open chain.”

Start with finite DMRG when the state is expected to obey an area-law-like entanglement pattern. Perform inexpensive trials first, then increase the maximum bond dimension and tighten the truncation cutoff. Compare energies, local observables, correlations and entanglement measures across runs rather than accepting a single converged-looking sweep.

“I want the bulk limit of a translationally invariant model.”

Use iDMRG or another infinite-MPS method, with a unit cell chosen to allow all plausible broken-symmetry periods. A one-site cell can miss a two-site or larger-period ground state. Check multiple cells and record the chosen cell in the methods section.

“I need excited states or a gap.”

ED is the straightforward option for small systems and many eigenstates. For larger chains, targeted DMRG variants can obtain selected low-lying states, but orthogonality constraints, targeting strategy and bond-dimension requirements must be validated. Decide whether you need a finite-size gap or an extrapolated bulk gap; those are different quantities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I need a time-dependent correlation function.”

Use TEBD or a related MPS evolution method when the interaction structure and time window permit controlled truncation. Repeat with smaller time steps and larger bond dimensions. If entanglement grows beyond the available bond dimension, the calculation may lose accuracy even when local quantities appear smooth.

“The model is critical or strongly entangled.”

Expect MPS convergence to become harder. TeNPy cautions that critical states challenge the area-law premise behind efficient MPS representations. Examine correlation functions, entropy and finite-size or bond-dimension scaling; do not infer accuracy from energy stability alone. ED may provide indispensable small-size benchmarks, although its accessible sizes can be too short to settle asymptotic behavior.

  • Target: full spectrum, a few eigenpairs, a ground state, a bulk state or dynamics.
  • Geometry: open, periodic or infinite boundaries, and whether edge physics is important.
  • Local dimension: spin-half, higher-spin or another on-site Hilbert space; the unstructured dimension grows as d^L for local dimension d.
  • Symmetries: particle number, magnetization, parity, translation or non-Abelian quantum numbers that can reduce ED and MPS work.
  • Entanglement: the bond dimension needed for the state and for each observable at the desired precision.
  • Interactions: nearest-neighbor terms are especially convenient for TEBD; longer-range terms affect both MPO construction and time evolution.
  • Validation budget: whether you can repeat calculations at larger bond dimension, smaller time step, larger unit cell or multiple finite sizes.

Chain length alone cannot answer the choice. A short periodic chain with a large on-site spin can be harder for ED than a longer spin-half chain restricted to a small symmetry sector, while a modest chain near criticality can demand a much larger MPS bond dimension than a longer gapped chain.

A defensible workflow that uses both methods

1. Build and test the Hamiltonian

Start with the smallest nontrivial systems. Check bond signs, boundary terms, coupling conventions, conserved quantities and expected symmetries. For an MPS implementation, TeNPy recommends contracting the matrix-product operator (MPO) into an ordinary matrix on small instances and comparing it with the analytical Hamiltonian, or testing states whose eigenvalues are known.

2. Solve overlapping small sizes with ED and DMRG

For chain lengths that fit ED, compute the same ground-state energy and observables with both approaches. Agreement tests the Hamiltonian, basis ordering, boundary conditions and measurement code. This is a validation workflow, not a universal performance threshold.

3. Scale one control at a time

Once the small-size comparison passes, increase chain length while separately increasing DMRG bond dimension. Keeping these changes distinct shows whether a size effect or an approximation error is responsible for a shift in the result. For TEBD, vary time step and bond dimension independently.

4. Define a stopping rule tied to the reported quantity

Specify an acceptable change in every observable that matters. For example, an energy tolerance alone does not certify a correlation function. Record discarded weight or truncation error, maximum bond dimension, sweep count, time step and evolution time so another researcher can reproduce the convergence test.

How to run and validate DMRG

Start with low-cost trials

Limit the initial chain length, maximum bond dimension and interaction range where possible. A short trial reveals whether the MPO is valid, whether the chosen symmetry sector is populated and how quickly entanglement grows. TeNPy’s protocol recommends this staged approach rather than launching the largest calculation immediately.

Increase bond dimension and tighten truncation

Run a sequence of calculations with progressively larger maximum bond dimension and a stricter singular-value cutoff. ITensor identifies sweep count, maximum bond dimension (maxm) and truncation cutoff as the basic DMRG controls. Compare the target observables between successive settings.

Inspect convergence diagnostics

  • Energy changes should decrease with additional sweeps and larger retained spaces.
  • Reported observables should stabilize, not merely the energy.
  • Entanglement entropy and bond dimensions should show behavior consistent with the phase and boundary conditions.
  • Termination should occur because a convergence criterion was met, not only because the maximum sweep count was reached.
  • Small parameter changes should not produce unexplained large jumps unless a physical level crossing or phase transition is expected.

TeNPy lists inconsistent energy or entropy behavior, termination at the sweep limit and strong sensitivity to small parameter changes as warnings that a calculation may not be converged.

Interpret tutorial heuristics correctly

ITensor’s parameter tutorial reports that an easy-to-converge one-dimensional spin chain can produce excellent results in as few as four or five sweeps, and gives an example where bond dimension m=200 is quite good for the spin-1 Heisenberg chain. These are software-tutorial examples, not guarantees. A critical model, a difficult initial state, a larger local spin or a sensitive observable may require substantially more sweeps or a larger bond dimension.

Test infinite calculations with multiple cells

For iDMRG, repeat the calculation with unit cells that can represent competing periodicities. Report the cell and whether energies and observables change when it is enlarged. A stable result in an incorrectly restricted cell is not evidence that the physical ground state has that periodicity.

ED implementation and validation checklist

  1. Specify the basis, boundary condition and Hamiltonian convention unambiguously.
  2. Identify all usable symmetries and decide whether to diagonalize a fixed sector or the full space.
  3. Choose dense diagonalization for a complete small spectrum, or a sparse iterative solver for selected eigenpairs.
  4. Check eigenvalue residuals and, when relevant, orthogonality and symmetry quantum numbers.
  5. Compare at least one small instance with an analytical limit, a known eigenstate or a separately implemented MPO.
  6. Distinguish finite-size results from any extrapolation to infinite length.

When only a few eigenpairs are required, sparse ED can extend the useful range, but it does not remove the need to report the sector, solver and hardware context that determine the practical limit.

Software choices: ITensor and TeNPy

ITensor provides MPS and MPO algorithms, index-aware tensor operations and quantum-number-conserving block-sparse tensors. Its documentation includes DMRG tutorials and parameter guidance. TeNPy’s stable documentation covers DMRG and TEBD in a Python library organized around model, network and simulation components; its DMRG protocol gives practical convergence and debugging checks.

Choose between them according to the model features and symmetries you need, preferred programming language, documentation quality, reproducibility requirements and how well each fits your existing workflow. No controlled, like-for-like runtime or memory benchmark establishes that one package is generally faster, so avoid selecting a library on an unsupported universal performance claim.

DMRG energy looks converged but correlations are not

Increase bond dimension, tighten the cutoff and inspect the specific correlation functions or structure factors you will report. Critical and near-critical systems commonly require more states than a gapped ground-state energy suggests.

DMRG stops at the sweep limit

Increase the allowed sweeps only after checking the initial state, symmetry sector, MPO and truncation settings. A larger sweep count cannot repair a wrong Hamiltonian or an excluded quantum-number sector.

Results depend strongly on a small parameter change

Check for a genuine level crossing or phase transition, then verify convergence at each parameter value. Large unexplained changes can indicate metastability, an inadequate bond dimension, a faulty MPO or an overly restrictive unit cell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iDMRG finds an apparently ordered state with the wrong period

Enlarge or change the unit cell and rerun from suitable initial states. The original cell may have prohibited the physical periodicity.

TEBD results change when the time step changes

Reduce the Trotter step and increase the retained bond dimension separately. A smaller time step addresses factorization error; it does not fix truncation error caused by entanglement growth.

What to report for reproducible results

  • Hamiltonian, coupling conventions, local spin dimension and boundary conditions.
  • Chain length or unit-cell size, plus the symmetry sector used.
  • Method variant: dense or sparse ED, finite DMRG, iDMRG, TEBD or another evolution scheme.
  • For ED: matrix representation, eigensolver, number of requested eigenpairs and residual checks.
  • For DMRG: initial state, sweep schedule, maximum bond dimension, truncation cutoff and stopping criterion.
  • For iDMRG: unit cell and tests with alternative cells.
  • For TEBD: Trotter order, time step, maximum bond dimension, truncation rule and final time.
  • Convergence plots or tables for the observables actually used in the conclusions.
  • Hardware and software versions when they materially affect memory limits or reproducibility.

Bottom line

Choose ED when finite-system exactness, complete spectra, excited states or a benchmark is the priority and the relevant sector fits. Choose DMRG when the goal is a long one-dimensional ground state and convergence can be demonstrated as the MPS bond dimension and truncation controls are tightened. Choose iDMRG for bulk calculations only after checking unit-cell assumptions, and choose TEBD for dynamics only after controlling both time-step and truncation errors. The most reliable practice is complementary: validate small systems with ED, then scale with tensor networks while showing convergence for the observables that support your physical claim.
