Choose DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake if you want one central heroic quest, a party you recruit and reshape through vocations, and a traditional adventure structure. Choose OCTOPATH TRAVELER if you prefer eight character-led stories, distinct abilities for interacting with the world, and battles built around weaknesses and stored Boost Points.
Neither game is objectively the better choice from its official description. They use a similar HD-2D visual style, but ask you to play a role-playing game in very different ways. Identify the story structure, party system, combat rhythm, and exact console edition you want before buying.

How the stories are organized
DRAGON QUEST III: one quest with a customizable party
DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake places you in the role of Ortega’s child, who takes up the quest against the archfiend Baramos. Square Enix describes the game as the narrative beginning of the Erdrick Trilogy. That framing gives the adventure a clear central objective: the world and its encounters are experienced as part of one hero’s campaign rather than as eight separate protagonist arcs.
#1 Best Overall
- Embark on an adventure of your own creation. The latest in the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series.
- New story content – Experience original, streamlined story content and quests with new paths to achieve.
- Character creation – Create a customized protagonist with unique appearance, voice, motions and more.
- Town building system – Rebuild the protagonist's town as the story progresses with evolving town reconstruction mechanics and development while inviting new people to live in the town.*
- HD-2D Visuals – The series’ iconic graphic style returns, bringing a striking blend of retro 2D characters in a beautiful 3D world.
The main character is the anchor, while recruited companions let you shape how the group functions. If you want a traditional journey in which the party travels together toward a shared threat, this structure is the more direct match.
OCTOPATH TRAVELER: eight travelers and eight paths
OCTOPATH TRAVELER presents eight travelers and eight adventures. You choose which path to follow and which characters join you, so the order and composition of your journey are more player-directed than a single-protagonist quest.
That format suits players who enjoy switching perspectives and assembling a team from distinct character stories. It also means that the appeal is partly in deciding whose route to pursue next, rather than only advancing one hero’s mission.
The official descriptions establish these structures, but they do not prove that one game has stronger writing or a more satisfying ending. Make the choice based on whether you want a unified quest or a collection of interlocking traveler stories.
Party building and character roles
What you customize in DRAGON QUEST III
Dragon Quest III’s defining party decision is vocation selection. Alongside the hero, you recruit allies and choose roles including Warrior, Martial Artist, Priest, Mage, Thief, Sage, and Monster Wrangler. Those choices determine the kind of group you take into the world and let you adjust the party to your preferred balance of offense, support, and utility.
The game also lets you customize character appearance and voice. That adds a personal layer to a party that is assembled by the player rather than being limited to a fixed cast. Friendly monster recruitment and Monster Arena tournaments provide additional activities connected to the game’s creature system.
Rank #2
- Begin your adventure as one of eight new travelers, each with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills.
- The series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, have reached even greater heights.
- The story takes place in Solistia, where diverse cultures thrive from east to west and the industries of the new era flourish. You can sail the seas and explore every corner of a world that changes from day to night.
- Each traveler has a unique set of Path Actions they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along in their travels, and more. Where will you go? What will you do? Every path is yours to take.
- Familiar mechanics from the original game have been preserved, like the freedom to develop your travelers’ jobs and skills, as well as the Break and Boost system that made battles so exhilarating. New mechanics have also been added.
Choose this model if you enjoy asking, “What should my party become?” You have a central hero, but the supporting lineup and its vocational identity are yours to define.

What you manage in OCTOPATH TRAVELER
Octopath Traveler gives each traveler an individual role and special abilities. Those abilities are not limited to combat: they also affect how you interact with the world. The result is a party whose members are differentiated by what they can do in towns and encounters as well as by their battle functions.
Because you select which travelers to recruit and which story to follow, party construction is tied to route planning. You are not simply assigning a vocation to a blank companion; you are deciding which established character and set of abilities to bring into the next part of the journey.
Choose this model if you prefer a cast with defined identities and abilities, and if discovering how those abilities change exploration is as important to you as optimizing statistics.
How the combat systems differ
DRAGON QUEST III: turn-based commands and party preparation
Nintendo describes Dragon Quest III’s battles as classic turn-based encounters. You issue commands, use ally skills, and look for enemy weaknesses. The tactical question is generally how to use the roles you selected: when to attack, when to support the group, and which abilities fit the opponent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIts vocation system makes preparation meaningful. A party built around durable physical attackers will approach a fight differently from one that relies on magic and healing. Monster-related activities add another layer to the adventure, but the core battle model remains recognizable command-based JRPG combat.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER: weaknesses, Boost Points, and planned power turns
Octopath Traveler also uses turn-based combat and asks you to target enemy weaknesses. Its distinctive resource is the Boost Point system: points accumulate each turn and can be spent to strengthen abilities, chain attacks, or help allies.
This creates a visible rhythm. You can conserve points while setting up an opportunity, then spend stored Boost Points when a weakness is exposed or when a stronger action will change the fight. The system rewards attention to enemy vulnerabilities and timing rather than treating every turn as an isolated command.
Which combat approach should you choose?
- Pick Dragon Quest III if you want the satisfaction of designing a party and applying familiar turn-based commands through a shared quest.
- Pick Octopath Traveler if you want a more explicit cycle of identifying weaknesses, saving power, and choosing the right moment to boost.
- Do not treat either choice as a proven difficulty verdict. The official listings describe mechanics, not comparative challenge, encounter frequency, or ease for newcomers.
World interaction and exploration
Dragon Quest III’s adventure activities
Dragon Quest III combines its main quest with party recruitment, vocation decisions, friendly monster recruitment, and Monster Arena tournaments. Those systems give you reasons to explore beyond simply moving from one story objective to the next.

If you enjoy improving a team over the course of one long campaign, the structure keeps your attention on how the group develops.
Octopath Traveler’s character abilities
In Octopath Traveler, a traveler’s special ability can shape interactions with the world. Your choice of who accompanies you therefore has practical consequences outside battle. A route may feel different depending on which character’s ability you can use and which traveler story you decide to pursue.
This is a good fit for players who like experimenting with a cast and seeing how different characters open up different forms of interaction. It is less suited to someone who wants every party member to be a blank template with interchangeable jobs.

Visual style and presentation
Both games belong to the HD-2D family: pixel-art characters and environments are presented with modern high-definition effects and depth. The shared visual language makes them easy to associate, but it should not imply that they have the same story structure or battle design.

Platform editions and save-data details
DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake
Nintendo lists the Nintendo Switch release date as November 14, 2024. Nintendo also lists a free Switch 2 update for the Switch release. The update adds sharper, smoother graphics and lets you choose whether to prioritize frame rate or graphics.
Square Enix’s Asia news portal announced availability on November 14, 2024 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store on Windows. Confirm the edition for your platform before purchasing, because features and upgrade paths can differ by system.
OCTOPATH TRAVELER
Nintendo lists the original Nintendo Switch release date as July 13, 2018. Nintendo also lists a separate Switch 2 version with an October 1, 2026 release date. Because that date has passed, check the live regional listing rather than relying on an older store page.
Nintendo warns that save data is incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 versions. If you have already started the Switch edition, confirm the save-transfer situation before buying the Switch 2 edition; do not assume that owning both versions means your progress will move automatically.

Which game is better for a first JRPG?
There is no evidence here for a universal “best first JRPG.” Use the format you are more likely to enjoy finishing:
- New to the genre and want one clear objective: Dragon Quest III’s single central quest and recognizable party roles may be easier to organize mentally.
- New to the genre but enjoy choosing your own route: Octopath Traveler’s eight travelers let you sample different character stories and abilities.
- Returning to classic JRPG structure: Dragon Quest III emphasizes recruiting a party and assigning vocations for one campaign.
- Interested in tactical resource timing: Octopath Traveler makes weakness targeting and Boost Point spending central to combat decisions.
These are fit-based inferences from the documented designs, not claims about learning curves, difficulty settings, or review consensus.
A decision process you can use before buying
- Choose the story shape. Select Dragon Quest III for one hero’s quest against Baramos; select Octopath Traveler for eight traveler stories and a route you assemble.
- Choose your party model. Select Dragon Quest III if you want to recruit allies and assign vocations. Select Octopath Traveler if you want established travelers with individual world and battle abilities.
- Choose your combat rhythm. Select Dragon Quest III for classic command selection and party-role planning. Select Octopath Traveler if saving Boost Points and exploiting weaknesses sounds more appealing.
- Check your console. Confirm whether you are buying a Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC edition. Do not assume that a title’s availability or upgrade behavior is identical across platforms.
- Check your save situation. For Octopath Traveler, remember that Nintendo says Switch and Switch 2 save data are incompatible. Decide whether preserving existing progress matters before choosing an edition.
- Verify the live listing. Regional prices, discounts, stock, physical versus digital format, and edition availability change. Compare the current store pages at purchase time rather than using an old price or availability claim.
What the official descriptions do—and do not—establish
The product information clearly establishes the games’ protagonists, party systems, combat mechanics, visual presentation, and Nintendo platform notes. It does not establish comparative playtime, encounter frequency, difficulty, review scores, writing quality, or which game delivers more enjoyment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That distinction matters when deciding between them. A feature such as Boost Points can tell you that Octopath Traveler has a resource-timing mechanic; it cannot prove that you will prefer its combat. Likewise, vocations show that Dragon Quest III supports party customization; they do not guarantee that its progression will suit every player.
Buying checklist
- Confirm whether you want a single-quest adventure or eight traveler-led routes.
- Confirm whether you prefer assigning vocations or selecting established characters with unique abilities.
- Confirm whether weakness targeting and Boost Points appeal to you more than classic command-based party management.
- Check the exact platform edition and current regional store listing.
- If buying Octopath Traveler for Switch 2, account for Nintendo’s save-data incompatibility warning.
- Compare the current price and physical/digital format at checkout; no fixed price comparison is established here.
The Bottom Line
Buy DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake for a single heroic campaign and a party you build through vocations. Buy OCTOPATH TRAVELER for eight character stories, world abilities tied to individual travelers, and Boost Point-driven weakness combat. Once you decide which structure fits, verify the exact console edition and its save-data rules before purchase.
