Choose memory only after confirming your CPU platform and exact motherboard: DDR4 and DDR5 are physically incompatible, and a board built for one generation cannot accept the other. For a new PC, compare the total cost and capabilities of the CPU, motherboard, and memory together—not just the price of a RAM kit.

Start with compatibility

Desktop DDR4 and DDR5 modules have different notch positions, so they cannot be swapped between motherboard types. An existing board therefore determines which memory generation you can use. Before buying, check the exact board model’s specifications and memory support list; a product family may include separate DDR4 and DDR5 variants.

The CPU platform narrows the options:

  • AMD AM4: DDR4.
  • AMD AM5: DDR5 only.
  • Intel LGA1851: DDR5 only.
  • Intel LGA1700: either generation is possible, but only with a motherboard specifically made for that memory type.

For Intel’s 13th-generation processors, the 2023 processor datasheet lists DDR4-3200 and DDR5 entries from 4000 to 5600 MT/s in the configurations shown. These are documented support timings, not a guarantee that every processor, board, and kit will run at every listed speed—or at an advertised overclocked speed. Check the CPU and motherboard makers’ specifications for the particular configuration you plan to use.

Compare the whole platform, not just the RAM

If you already own a suitable DDR4 kit, keeping it can reduce the cost of a build on a compatible platform. Moving to DDR5 is not a matter of replacing the modules alone: it requires a DDR5 motherboard and a compatible processor. For a new build, compare the current local cost of the CPU, board, and memory together, along with the performance and upgrade path you need.

G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 RAM (AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0) 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 6000MT/s* CL36-36-36-96 1.35V Desktop Computer Memory U-DIMM - Matte Black (F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5)
  • Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
  • G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

There is no durable, globally applicable price winner. Memory prices change, and Tom’s Hardware notes that volatility makes a fixed price-to-performance ratio unreliable. Check current prices in your region when deciding rather than relying on a general claim that one generation is always cheaper.

What the gaming evidence says—and what it doesn’t

DDR5 can offer a measurable gaming advantage in a same-platform comparison, but the result depends on the test setup. In a Tom’s Hardware comparison published July 28, 2026, DDR4 delivered roughly 9–14% lower average gaming performance across the tested Intel LGA1700 CPU comparisons. The test used an RTX 5090 at 1080p and a 15-game suite; results varied by game.

That figure is not a universal prediction. It does not establish the difference for every game, graphics card, resolution, processor, or productivity workload. Treat it as evidence that memory generation can matter in the tested LGA1700 gaming setups, not as a guarantee of the same gain in a different build.

Check capacity and supported settings

Generation alone does not determine whether a kit is a good fit. Match the kit’s capacity and configuration to your needs, then confirm the board’s memory support list and the CPU’s specifications. Advertised speed is not the same as guaranteed operating speed: results can depend on the processor, motherboard, number of modules, and selected settings.

A practical purchase checklist

  1. Identify the CPU platform. Determine whether the build is AM4, AM5, LGA1700, or LGA1851.
  2. Confirm the exact motherboard’s memory type. Read its specifications and support list; do not infer the generation from the chipset alone.
  3. Check the CPU and board’s supported configurations. Verify capacity, module arrangement, and supported speeds for the combination you intend to use.
  4. Compare total platform costs. Include CPU, motherboard, and memory, and account for any suitable DDR4 kit you can reuse.
  5. Decide based on your workload and upgrade plans. Use relevant benchmarks as evidence for a specific setup, not as a promise about all systems.
