For a character that lives in a game scene, start with the engine’s world-object type—not with a standalone class-versus-struct choice. Use that engine-managed object for scene identity, lifecycle, transforms, and integration with rendering or collision. Use components to add reusable capabilities, structs for value-like data, and plain objects for logic that does not need a place in the scene. These roles can work together in one character design.
First decide whether the character needs to exist in the scene
An active character typically needs a stable identity that engine systems can refer to, a transform, lifecycle handling, and participation in systems such as rendering and collision. Choose the engine-supported world-object model when those needs apply. An ordinary language object—here meaning an object without engine-managed scene lifecycle—is not a substitute for that integration.
The names differ by engine. In Unity 6.0, a GameObject represents characters, props, and scenery; Components attached to it provide functionality. Unity describes GameObjects as containers for Components in its Introduction to GameObjects. Unity’s Unity 6.0.6 getting-started documentation likewise says that GameObjects represent characters and that components define their behavior (Key concepts).
In Unreal Engine 5.8, Actor is a UObject subclass and a close analogue to Unity’s GameObject. Actors support components and transforms. Unreal’s Character type is a Pawn subtype intended for humanoid-style characters, with movement and collision functionality. See Epic’s Game Objects in Unreal Engine.

Choose each representation for the job it does
| Representation | Best fit | What it provides | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine-managed world object or class | A character that is active in the scene and must be known to engine systems | Engine identity and lifecycle; access to the engine’s scene features and supported components | Use the engine’s specific type and rules; Unity and Unreal do not implement this model identically. |
| Component | A capability or piece of behavior that can be attached to a world object | A way to assemble character functionality by role rather than putting every responsibility in one class | Choose component boundaries around cohesive, useful responsibilities; components are not a promise of better performance. |
| Struct | Related data that is better treated as a value than as an independently managed scene object | A data representation for snapshots, configuration, coordinates, or similar state | A struct does not automatically provide scene identity, transforms, or world-object lifecycle. Copying and mutation behavior depend on the language and engine. |
| Plain object | Rules, helpers, strategies, or domain logic that need ordinary object behavior but no scene presence | Language-level organization without requiring an engine-managed scene object | “Plain object” is not a standardized engine category; the details depend on the language and project. |
Use components to keep character capabilities composable
A world object need not own every responsibility in one large character class. Where the engine’s component model supports it, capabilities such as health, movement, inventory, animation coordination, or interaction can be represented as components. Those examples are design applications of the component model, not a prescribed list from either engine.
Composition is useful when a capability can be reused or changed independently. Avoid creating a deep inheritance tree for every character variant by default: shared behavior can often be composed, while differences in values can be represented as data. This is a design heuristic, not an engine rule, and should follow the needs of the project.

Use structs for data, not as a shortcut to a scene character
A struct is a good candidate for compact, related, value-like data—for example, a stats snapshot passed to a calculation, a configuration record, coordinates, or an event payload. Use it when independent engine-managed identity and lifecycle are unnecessary. If a value needs to be edited by engine tools, serialized, or observed by engine systems, check the relevant engine’s rules rather than assuming that a struct behaves like a component or world object.
Unreal-specific struct behavior
In Unreal Engine 5.8, reflected structs are recognized as UStruct but sit outside the UObject ecosystem. Epic’s Structs in Unreal Engine says a UStruct is faster to create than a UObject with the same data layout. That is a narrow comparison about creation in Unreal documentation; it is not evidence that structs are universally faster in every engine or workload.

Keep plain objects for logic that does not need scene identity
Use ordinary objects for logic that benefits from its own organization but does not need an engine-managed transform, lifecycle, or direct scene participation. Examples include a rule evaluator, a strategy, or a helper that calculates a result from character data. The character’s engine object can call that logic and hold or pass the supporting data without turning every helper into a scene entity.
Unity and Unreal use different object models
| Engine and documentation version | Live character model | Data and behavior distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Unity 6.0 / 6.0.3 | GameObject with attached Components; traditional projects commonly use MonoBehaviour components | Unity describes MonoBehaviour components as combining logic and data. Its object-oriented and data-oriented approaches organize code and data differently. |
| Unreal Engine 5.8 | Actor with components; Character is a Pawn subtype for humanoid-style characters | Actor functionality can be extended directly as well as through components. UStruct is reflected but outside the UObject ecosystem. |
Unity’s Unity 6.0.3 manual says, “Traditional Unity projects are grounded in object-oriented design principles and programming philosophy, which is centered around objects, their properties and functions, and the relations between these objects.” The same Object-oriented development page contrasts this with data-oriented development, which separates code and data to target CPU cache efficiency and parallelism; in ECS, components hold data and systems hold logic. It notes possible performance issues with object-oriented patterns at scale, but gives no measurement or cutoff.

Make performance decisions from the workload
Neither “class” nor “struct” alone tells you how a character system will perform. The relevant design includes how many objects are active, what they do each update, how data is accessed, and which engine systems must process them. Unity’s documentation describes potential scale-related issues and the goals of data-oriented work, but does not establish an entity-count threshold or a universal winner.

- Build the simplest engine-supported design that meets the character’s lifecycle and gameplay needs.
- If a large population or hot update loop becomes a concern, profile the actual project workload before changing architecture.
- Consider data-oriented or ECS approaches when measurements and access patterns justify them, not as an automatic replacement for all world objects.
- Do not infer broad runtime performance from Unreal’s specific statement about UStruct creation speed.
A practical decision sequence
- Does it need scene identity, transforms, engine lifecycle, rendering, collision, or direct engine references? Use the engine’s world-object type. In Unity that generally means a GameObject with components; in Unreal, choose the appropriate Actor-based type, such as Character for humanoid-style movement and collision needs.
- Is the responsibility a reusable capability attached to that character? Consider a component where the engine supports it, rather than adding every capability to a monolithic character class.
- Is it related data that should be handled as a value? Consider a struct, with the engine’s reflection, serialization, and mutation rules in mind.
- Is it logic that needs no scene identity? Keep it in an ordinary object or another suitable language-level abstraction.
- Is scale the reason for reconsidering the design? Profile the real workload first; choose a different architecture only when observed behavior warrants it.
